gets on my nerves.

I still have dec-talk, because I bought mine back when it had it. I don't
like eloquence, because I don't like the way it sounds, and it's not as
loud, but I have to agree with you; it is quite snappy in its
responsiveness. I have never had or heard vocalizer, so I can't compare
that. Pam.

Exactly. You also don't have to pay for Eloquence, which while it isn't my
favorite synthesizer in terms of the actual speech is still just about the
fastest synthe I've ever used in terms of responsiveness, although the
Vocalizer voices are pretty good in that department as well.

Hi. Actually you would need to purchase a license for Dectalk.
Actually you've already made the large investment by buying WE in the
first place. For me the cost of an SMA is worth it for the tech support
and the delivery of cds for upgrades that use an SMA count. You also
can get your licensed upgrade quickly. Ok, the servers got hammered at
first but you've had WE for a while and probably have had quite a few
upgrades while you've had your SMA. I would rather have an agreement
with GW/AI for my screen reader. MS has nothing to do with it this way.
The free option is really fantastic for people who can't make the
initial investment in their screen reader but in my opinion its value
decreases for those of us who are working with the licensed full copy.

Hi Robin,

If you use your screen reader for work, and in an emergency would really
need help, I would not give up support; it's too important to you (and I've
seen too many people rescued by support when their Window-Eyes wasn't
working, or wasn't working with the program they needed). I also suspect
your requests for enhancements (especially to make it work with some new
program) get much more attention when you're a paying support customer.

As for the synthesizer, yes, you are giving up the use of any "high quality"
one. You are also gambling on MS keeping this program going from year to
year; they could stop it at any time and your copy of Window-Eyes (the free
one) would no longer work.

Hi folks, I'll be direct in my views here for ther est ofy ou.
1.
Hear is what makes AISquared/GW staff different from allt he other
major corporations out there.
One on one personal service.
In the business that I have owned for a year, I also provide my
clients personal support, and am on hand to help with whatever they
might need from me.
So if they don't know how something works, well there you go.
I believe in the personal touch, it sets much apart when that is given.
So while I use the free version of Window-Eyes and am on a fixed
income like many ofy ou, I am going to save up as much as I need to so
that I can ultimately invest in a full copy of Window-Eyes for several
reasons.
1. I'll get all the voices I want.
2.
I'd like the benefit of knowing that should I need help I'll get free
unlimited support and the personal touch the staff bring to
Window-Eyes.
3.
Knowing that I won't necessarily need Office installed will be of help
actualy, because the last thing I need is a screen reader dependent
upon Micorosft Office itself. Sorry guys, but I don't install Office
on all machines.
There are times where I have needed ot use Window-Eyes in virtual
machine environments for testing purposes, and every time I need do
that, I fire up the 60 day evaluation for those times.
Why? Because usually after I first set up a Windows machine, virutal
or not, I don't have Office installed.
And I'd prefer to have all voices just owrk out of hte box that
Window-Eyes supports without buying them separately.
I've come to see everything in my life, not as an expense, but as an investment.
Investing in Window-Eyes over JAWS for my work life as it works with
the ecommerce shop I own even though I work out of my home in a lot of
cases would be an investment worth making to me, so I'm coming at you
from the other end of the spectrum.
I'm lucky that I haven't needed to pay for support because I can't
presently aford the support costs that come with Window-Eyes For
Office at all.
I own a business I need to save up money to make investments in it
from time to time, I need to save up money for this, that, and so on.
So, ultimately having to pay for support is a large deal breaker.
Requiring that Office be installed like I say is not at all funny to
me, and ultimately, I'd just like to pay for the occasional SMA.
I am sure AISquared makes paying for the SMA easy and quick.
DO they make you sign a Braille form or something crazy then mail it back?
Or can they just charge your card for you over the phone or online?
Either way, I think maintaining an agreement with them is worth it.
So there is my opinion especially regarding the personal touch.
I'd appreciate knowing from you SMA users how easy it has been to pay
for them when you've had to.
Talk to you all soon!

Keith

I've come to see everything in my life, not as an expense, but as an
investment.

Keith

As for the synthesizer, yes, you are giving up the use of any "high

RE: Opinion on moving from paid version of WE to free version

2015-07-30 Thread Vaughan Dodd via Talk
In the end: purchasing is a commitment to the on-going development and
availability of Window-eyes. The free offer with Office actually meanhs
that people are sponging off the rest of us. If everyone decided not to
purchase, there would be no on-going development, no customer support, no
dedicated Window-eyes engineers etc etc - no Window-Eyes for Office. Some
of us are very generous!

My other dislike of the for office scheme is that those of us who have paid
for our Window-Eyes don't get much more than those us who have not paid for
it. The current pricing for version 9.2, and the option of purchasing an
SMA, particularly under the upgrade scenario, is very affordable if people
budget for it.

There is no doubt that in the perfet world, full access to Windows should be
part of the operating system - but it isn't, and there are advantages in
people being able to choose from a range of products how we wish to access
Windows. The objective of making Window-eyes more available to more people
through the office linkage is commendable, but I am not certain how it
secures the future of Window-Eyes.

I delayed purchasing 9.2 (which woul dhave been by way of a new SMA) for
various reasons not immediately relevant to the discussion, but I feel
something of a renewed confidence in Window-eyes and AI Squared, and so I've
invested in the upgrade and SMA. So far - glad I have.

Vaughan.

Actually you've already made the large investment by buying WE in the first
place. For me the cost of an SMA is worth it for the tech support and the
delivery of cds for upgrades that use an SMA count. You also can get your
licensed upgrade quickly. Ok, the servers got hammered at first but you've
had WE for a while and probably have had quite a few upgrades while you've
had your SMA. I would rather have an agreement with GW/AI for my screen
reader. MS has nothing to do with it this way.
The free option is really fantastic for people who can't make the initial
investment in their screen reader but in my opinion its value decreases for
those of us who are working with the licensed full copy.

for Ai squared and gw to chargea $449 upgrade fee whe ntehe update was a

did not even charge for it and just said aas long as your on jaws 16 itsa

for accessibility. If these companies must I would much rathe them go the

one and not these ridiculous price gaguing ones . What have gained thin the

are slow to adopt the touch wher aal windows and office products are going.
So I wonder this is why I don't thinking that AI and Gw are on the cutting

So while I use the free version of Window-Eyes and am on a fixed

1. I'll get all the voices I want.

Keith

Yes, exactly the possibility I was trying to mention. I just saw a report
which said that now, Windows is only 1 in 7 of the operating systems in use.
MS may have created this Office program with Window-Eyes to try and get more
Office users, and just like it suddenly appeared, it may indeed suddenly
disappear (who knows), but anyone giving you something for free is nothing you

Hi Robin,

I am absolutely sure we are not guaranteed life-time versions of
Window-Eyes, but all you have to do is to go read the terms of agreement at
the special web site.

As for the other point, MS does not guarantee life time support either; but
just try calling that number and asking them any serious Window-Eyes
question pertaining to Window-Eyes?. I'm sure they know Windows fairly well
(well enough?), but I am also sure they aren't trained in Window-Eyes.

I have one question for you fo those who are payingdo you thin it was right
for Ai squared and gw to chargea $449 upgrade fee whe ntehe update was a
mnor one supportinga few thing especially wwindows 10, and the competiton
did not even charge for it and just said aas long as your on jaws 16 itsa
free updates. That's what ticks me off lately about eh business practices of
AI squared and if they go ddown this road tey will be considered as bad as
fs and not any different . So thee companies have to recognize the expensive
acces tech products are the way of he past, see even mac have build inscreen
reader and apple is one of he most profitable companies an they don't charge
for accessibility. If these companies must I would much rathe them go the
subscription mode in the long run whih wooudl not hurt development or gauge
the customer. Tahts almost what every acces product whether that be on I
OS, Mac, Windows or even onleniux and Android are goin the way of re access
tech and if you want alternatives then you have htem but hey are low cost
one and not these ridiculous price gaguing ones . What have gained thin the
past few years ffrom gw they wer slow to adopt the web issues and now they
are slow to adopt the touch wher aal windows and office products are going.
So I wonder this is why I don't thinking that AI and Gw are on the cutting
edge and have lost touch with whats innovative and cutting edge.

Re: Opinion on moving from paid version of WE to free version

2015-07-31 Thread Kevin Huber via Talk
Hi:
I recently started using the free version of Window-eyes because my
SMA ran out after version 8.4, and I wanted to try the free version
anyway.
Although I used Eloquence when I had the paid version, I figured that
I could get used to the speech synthesizers that come with the free
version.
I started using Microsoft Anna because I liked the sound of her voice,
but I found that she was painfully slow so I switched to the ESpeak
voice, and while I found it difficult to understand at first, I have
gotten used to it, and I found it to be at least as fast, maybe faster
than Eloquence, so, at least for now, I am comfortable with the free
version of Window-eyes. If I get to a point where I need tech support
from AISquared, and have to pay the going rate for it, well I guess I
will regret having made the decision to go with the free version of
Window-eyes, but for now, I am glad that I saved the several hundred
bucks or whatever the SMA for version 9 would have cost me.
Of course, that is only my opinion and I can see why others don't feel
the same way.

I would never give up tech support because if you need something you must
pay by incident unless they have an incident package.

My last SMA is done, so I'm debating whether to buy a new one or move to the
free version of WE to upgrade to WE 9.2. The quality of tech support was a
big reason I chose Window Eyes originally and that is a big factor for me to
consider in this switch, but I also want to know if others who made the
switch think I'm giving up anything else. I currently use the Dectalk voice
in WE and do have Kurzweil so I can use that Eloquence voice if I have to.

2015-07-29 Thread Marvin Commerford via Talk

Exactly. You also don't have to pay for Eloquence, which while it isn't my

fastest synthe I've ever used in terms of responsiveness, although the

Hello. I agree with you totally. The only real reason why in some parts of
Canada, and in the US many people prefer the free version is because they
can't get a rehab agency to purchase Window-Eyes because jfw already got
them in its teeth. I myself don't have an SMA and I'm on a fixed income. Our
local dealer, which is named Aroga, that distributes Window-Eyes rarely
sells any copies of it thanks to the free office inishitive of it and there
are users all the time in Canada who are using it.

The free option is really fantastic for people who can't make the
initial investment in their screen reader but in my opinion its value
decreases for those of us who are working with the licensed full copy.

do not think that anyone here is going to spend a long time helping someone
solve a complicated problem when they are not being compensated for their time.
Fortunately I have seldom required true tech support, but I have been grateful

great for those in financial need, but going from the paid product to the free

Yes, I think Andy knew that, but I believe his point is that often, tech
support needs to be much more than an ocasional answer; but a long involved
trouble shooting process.

If you're employed, or you use your pc for electronic banking, bill paying
or anything else critical, and your screen reader just stops working, you
really need tech support (not just an ocasional answer).

RE: [EXTERNAL] Re: Opinion on moving from paid version of WE to free version

2015-07-29 Thread john s via Talk
Andy, what I meant by tech support is getting an answer to an
occasional question.

It troubles me when someone says that they'll just use this list for
tech support. There is a big difference between friendly advice and tech
support. I do not think that anyone here is going to spend a long time
helping someone solve a complicated problem when they are not being
compensated for their time. Fortunately I have seldom required true tech
support, but I have been grateful for its availability when I have
needed it. I think that the free offering is great for those in
financial need, but going from the paid product to the free product is a
big step backward, and not advisable particularly at this time when we
are going through such major changes.

The free option is really fantastic for people who can't make the
initial investment in their screen reader but in my opinion its value
decreases for those of us who are working with the licensed full copy.

to the free version of WE to upgrade to WE 9.2. The quality of tech
support was a big reason I chose Window Eyes originally and that is a
big factor for me to consider in this switch, but I also want to know if
others who made the switch think I'm giving up anything else. I
currently use the Dectalk voice in WE and do have Kurzweil so I can use
that Eloquence voice if I have to.
