Unfortunately we have not decided on how to tag things connected to a way, which are on one side, and that matters. Among these things are cycleways, pavements, lanes per driving direction, etc. b) Tagging of time-dependant features. Your example is easy, but it simply is not enough to have a tag for time_start and time_end, as there might be the weekday influencing the times. c) Hierarchical tagging. If you tag what time the parking meter has to be used, those time tags are independent from every other tag. How can it be made clear that those tags are for the parking meter tag, not for the maxspeed tag? Does it make sense to invent parking_meter_start_time to distinguish it from maxspeed_start_time? Great, then we should leave this as-is (implied oneway=yes for motorway_link) If a highway is not oneway by definition oneway=yes should not be implied. You do realize that implies means if no value is specified, this should be the value that is understood, right? That the actual tags over-ride the implied value? So the implied value could be incorrect some of the time is no reason not to have an implied value. That's why it can be over-ridden by applying the appropriate tag. Having the implication is about reducing the effort required for someone to tag a motorway, and making it so that consumers of OSM data can make assumptions about the data. There are three options: 1. make no assumptions: This means every single motorway_link needs to have a oneway=yes or oneway=no (or oneway=-1). A pain for taggers, and doesn't help makers of routing applications who still need to handle the case where there is no oneway tag. 2. Assume oneway=no. This means that 95+% of motorway_links must be tagged. Still a pain for taggers. Makers of routing apps can't safely make this assumption anyway for fear of routing someone the wrong way up the motorway_link. It does mean that motorway_link has the same default as the other highways except for motorway though. 3. Assume oneway=yes. This means only 5-% of motorway_links must be tagged. It's the safe assumption that routers will have to make anyway. And of course it doesn't prevent anyone who wants to from explicitly specifying a oneway key/value for every motorway_link if they feel like it... Given the changing implication of oneway=yes this is actually the only option left -- like it or not, painful or not -- since they could be added by people who read that it was implied and by people who read it wasn't. Nah, it's not that bad. It just means that the only data currently in there is built on the following: Either the person assumed there was no implied value for one-way, in which case they would have explicitly tagged all of them. Good evening, please revote not for sport=ice_rink (because rink is not a kind of sport...) but for leisure=ice_rink, which is better. I have no idea about how to tag it as a building (usually where spectators can watch an ice hockey game) or as a open ice rink (small, where ~20 children can skate on it) = some people talk about natural ice rinks, but I can't understand how to tag it, since there is no infrastructure and that icing only happens a few days or so. Long answer: For this, I just enable Mapnik (ot [EMAIL PROTECTED]) as the image layer, then I know where I am, but it requires connectivity. The other way is to work with OSB and the World OSB manager. It allows to download a number of regions locally. It supports low zoom reduction and is quite memory efficient. Aaah, would be nice to be able to tell that from the UI :) Maybe rename download viewport to current layer or similar? [OSM-talk] Extending the Data pane on openstreetmap.org
The 'Data' pane on the main OSM site is a great way of finding out information about specific objects on a map (or seeing where data is that's not [yet] been rendered), but I think it has great potential for being extended into a summary of the data in the area you're looking at, before clicking through to see all the object-specific information that's available currently. It would be great if you could look at the data pane and be greeted by something like: = Objects in the area = == by key == 1. highway 2. amenity 3. ... == by user == 1. user 1 2. user 2 3. ... == by timeframe == 1. last day 3. last week 4. last month 5. ... Clicking on any of the higher level groupings (e.g. a key, an author, or a timeframe) would give a filtered list (like that seen currently) of just those relevant ones, and even highlight them in the map as well. Just some thoughts on how to extend that functionality to be of more use to a wider range of people, for monitoring changes to the map in areas they know. What do people think about the idea? I might see if I can find some time to implement it at some point, if it sounds like something that'd be useful to people. The good thing about OSM is that we don't have to go for one or the other; we can have both. Ulf, with just a little bit of Javascript you can create your own version of an OpenStreetMap map, just like informationfreeway.org, and modify it to your heart's content. Here is an example that displays the mouse position in degrees, minutes, and seconds: http://www.remote.org/frederik/tmp/degrees.html (This was a bit nasty as the OpenLayers version currently used by informationfreeway, from which I simply copied the page, does not support easy overriding of the coordinate display; newer OpenLayers versions would only require 10 lines of code instead of the 30 lines or so I had to put in here.) Steve is right in saying that the general public doesn't know their latitude from their longitude and has no desire to be educated on this; but of course this does not keep us from making alternative OpenStreetMap pages aimed at people who do.
