Re: [OSM-talk-be] sidewalk as ways or tags
Renaud MICHEL wrote: You mean that a pedestrian is allowed to cross aven a national road anywhere he wants, and even walk on it? Walk on it: at certain conditions, yes: no sidewalk that can be walked on, no walkable shoulders, and no traffic signs explicitly forbidding it. Also have to walk left on the road I think. Crossing it: no traffic signs forbidding pedestrian access (motorway, motorroad, no pedestrians allowed) and no crossing closer than 30 meters. I have always thought that (and acted acordingly), if a crossing (be it controlled or not) is close enough you may not cross the road but must take the crossing. (close enough beeing around 50-100m, but I don't remember exactly) Yeah, in my memory it was 30 meters. But I don't know many big roads that have a crossing every 60 meters. Also, only put a tag like foot=no on the road when there are signs explicitly forbidding pedestrians on the road. [...] Well, my reasoning was that, as I had mapped separately the walking part, that the main road sould not be used for walking. (warning: it gets ugly here if you're not closely familiar with access tags) And I can understand that logic, but here's the tricky part: osm access tags are not simple tags just telling whether X is allowed or not... They have another meaning, and in the case of foot=no on a normal road it means that there is a sign C19 that forbids pedestrians to use the road (and with such a sign this actually means the entire road, so including the sidewalks if there are some). The two may look very similar, but as said above: with the traffic sign pedestrians cannot cross or use the road at all. Without the sign, they can given the conditions above. So that's why we need to have the distinction. Likewise, you don't add bicycle=no to a road if there's a cycleway (and people who did this are also often incorrect in their way of thinking, since they very likely discarded access for mopeds). Given non-subjective data, a router would just see that there's a footway or cycleway which is part of the road and direct you there, and it wouldn't need tricks like foot=no. And it should see that there's a crossing close enough and let you use it. OK, I don't really understand your point about linking to a road, Well, read my previous paragraph: a router has to know whether that footway or cycleway is part of the road or not. If it is, then the router should give you directions to follow them. If it's not, then a pedestrian could make use of the road, or the footway which in this case is another road that happens to run parallel to the main road. (And I just realize some parts may read ambiguously since there's no English word to make the distinction between road as in the entire public area between parcels including the part where the cars drive, cycleway, sidewalks, verges etc., and road as in just the part where cars drive...) [OSM-legal-talk] Someone ought to do something ... dealing with violations of OSM's geodata license
This is a general question for discussion from the License Working Group. I may also ask on the main list as the constituency is different. There are now 1 to 2 reports every month of folks violating OSM's license by using OSM's data or maps without any or without adequate CC-BY-SA attribution and they take several weeks to fix on average. These are mostly websites but include poster advertising, a TV advertisement and a TV show. This has sort of landed in the LWG's lap by default but we feel we are not dealing with the issues adequately and some issues not at all. We welcome suggestions on a better system. Our main function is the internal license change, and until that is done, we really don't have the resource to handle external matters like this. Here's a run down of what happens at the moment: - At the very minimum, we want to keep make a public record of alleged violations to show that these things do not pass un-noticed and to provide a central point for collating frequency and the nature of the problem. So far, if the LWG hears a report, we document the basics in a Hall of Shame section of our weekly meeting minutes, http://www.osmfoundation.org/wiki/Working_Group_Minutes - A member of the OSMF board or LWG takes up the particular issue. This depends very much on personal enthusiasm. It requires initial tact - most instances are neglect/cannot be bothered rather than purely wilful. It requires persistance and follow-up, - we generally get an oh we will fix it immediately ... and then they don't. It requires careful coordination within the OSM/OSMF community to provide a united front. It may require research - for example, how exactly should a TV ad provide a CC-BY-SA atttibution? And lastly, future cases may involve bumping up to formal legal help and legal action. Not easy for one person to do. Re: [OSM-legal-talk] Someone ought to do something ... dealing with violations of OSM's geodata license
Mike, There are now 1 to 2 reports every month of folks violating OSM's license by using OSM's data or maps without any or without adequate CC-BY-SA attribution and they take several weeks to fix on average. I agree that this should not burden the LWG. We have this community-run lacking proper attribution web site which sadly got off to a bit of a wrong start, looking more like a witch hunt than a place for complaints, with vigilantes actively trawling the web for anything that might look like a license violation. But basically I think this is something the community should do; and if they aren't interested then it shouldn't be done. I firmly believe that OSMF should *not* routinely get involved, and if ever OSMF were to involve lawyers then only in an extremely high-profile case (major mapping provider uses OSM without telling or so). Anything else must be run by the (ideally local) community. I think all that is needed is a clear statement from OSMF saying that they don't feel responsible for chasing up violators, and outlining a suggested community process for dealing with the problem without being an embarassement to the project. Personally I think that name and shame should be the utmost we do with violators, and legal steps should neither be threatened nor initiated except in very grave circumstances. Re: [OSM-talk] Videos
Sorry this has taken so long, folks. I have been fighting my video editing software (and/or my hardware), which has prevented me from achieving a good a result as I wanted. In the end I have had to settle for a lower res version, and it has some rough edges. The worst of these is that in a few places where I have frozen the video for voiceover, it goes very blurry. However, I had to call it a day somewhere (if anyone has some really good hardware and Kdenlive, I am happy to send you the file if you wish to render at a higher res). I have focused on tracing a road from Bing, but also mentioned how to add further imagery from the wiki. Here it is: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zdUuZDtYEHs I hope this is in time still to be of use to someone. If it is, please publicise it as you see fit, as I will be away from home and offline for a few days, so won't have time to do so myself. Great Maurizio, well currently it's just an idea and I might have the time to realize it in the next month. Before I would ask my university, I would like to get a go or not go from the community if datamining in this kind might be possible. What I try to do is to collect attributes per user of this channels and try to link them using nick or email. Later I would like to pseudomize the dataset (random names, userid, no email, jitter in edit bboxes,...) and make it available to other researchers. So if the case concerns a map of Helsinki, pass it on to the Helsinki mappers - one of whom will see his or her own work - and they will be able to say directly, you are infringing my copyright. A local mapper is also better placed to contact organizations in their native language and to be familiar with local laws. The LWG can co-ordinate the process - and contact directly when there is no local angle involved, as with a map of the whole world - but I think there is some value in decentralizing the licence checking, as is done for the mapping itself. -- Ed Avis e...@waniasset.com ___ talk mailing list talk@openstreetmap.org http://lists.openstreetmap.org/listinfo/talk

I don't see any bad things on monitoring this usage and drop a line, if they miss the license and OSM hint.

FOT-data (under Download FOT-data) 3.
