[talk-ph] some edits in Bohol
Hi, I've just finished my initial edits in Bohol, a couple of notes and question: 1. I upgraded the coastal road to trunk as it serves as the major artery for all towns within the province. Some street signs call it National Highway, Tagbilaran East Road while locals call it the Circumferential Road. I haven't edited the name tag due to this confusion, I'll let local mappers verify the official name. 2. I found some GPS tracks that were not traced. I traced and tagged them as highway=road 3. Apart from the Coastal road and Interior Road that traverse several towns, most roads to and from town centers are mostly unpaved gravel road. 4. I can personally confirm that road shape from the arivac bohol import are really good. -- cheers, maning -- Freedom is still the most radical idea of all -N.Branden wiki: http://esambale.wikispaces.com/ blog: http://epsg4253.wordpress.com/ -- ___ talk-ph mailing list talk-ph@openstreetmap.org http://lists.openstreetmap.org/listinfo/talk-ph
[OSM-talk] The Future of Areas
Hi! Some people (including me) are not happy with the way we represent areas in OSM. There have been some discussions here and there, but not much was done. If we want to make progress on this issue we should document what the problems with the current approach actually are. Based on that we can develop and evaluate possible solutions. Frederik and I have written down some of the issues and ideas on these pages: http://wiki.openstreetmap.org/wiki/The_Future_of_Areas . Re: [OSM-talk] Analysing the OSM community
I found today this article A qualitative enquiry into OpenStreetMap making Author: Yu-Wei Lina Abstract Based on a case study on the OpenStreetMap community, this paper provides a contextual and embodied understanding of the user-led, user-participatory and user-generated produsage phenomenon. It employs Grounded Theory, Social Worlds Theory, and qualitative methods to illuminate and explores the produsage processes of OpenStreetMap making, and how knowledge artefacts such as maps can be collectively and collaboratively produced by a community of people, who are situated in different places around the world but engaged with the same repertoire of mapping practices. The empirical data illustrate that OpenStreetMap itself acts as a boundary object that enables actors from different social worlds to co-produce the Map through interacting with each other and negotiating the meanings of mapping, the mapping data and the Map itself. The discourses also show that unlike traditional maps that black-box cartographic knowledge and offer a single dominant perspective of cities or places, OpenStreetMap is an embodied epistemic object that embraces different world views. The paper also explores how contributors build their identities as an OpenStreetMaper alongside some other identities they have. Understanding the identity-building process helps to understand mapping as an embodied activity with emotional, cognitive and social repertoires. http://www.informaworld.com/smpp/content~db=all~content=a935694438~frm=titlelink ___ talk mailing list talk@openstreetmap.org http://lists.openstreetmap.org/listinfo/talk

[OSM-talk] alternate OSM instances
variations on this have come up recently, and there's some discussion on talk-us. the concept is evolving into providing a service where there are instances of the OSM software stack with the goal of providing layers that can be used in mash ups against the real OSM database. my particular interest is in providing for historical data that would clutter the OSM core. others are interested in an environment for conflation and/or for prestaging candidate data for the core. experimental tagging laboratories are another potential use for this. the current state of the idea is that one of the soon-to-be-acquired OSM US servers can be configured to provide this. we're looking for input discussion. richard ___ talk mailing list talk@openstreetmap.org http://lists.openstreetmap.org/listinfo/talk

Speaking as someone with a background in science I think I agree with Elizabeth's interpretation. I get the impression the study is much more subjective than solid, the sample size far too small to get any meaningful results other than this needs more research dollars to further define etc etc. I've just been reading a study on licensing by a consultant. Take out the jargon and it says the more liberal the license the more likely it is that people will use your Open data. Well yes but did we really need a study to discover that? The paper describes what it describes, and from the small sample set makes some good points, but we don't see the reasoning behind the choice of the sample set, which by its nature has to have excluded a number of user groups. Discussion of that point, or acknowledgement of the difficulties inherent in making the choice, would have added to the paper. The study is subjective because it is in sociology, and that is a feature of that sort of research, where students just don't have access to the resources needed to survey a few million or even a few thousand people. I'm not concerned about complicated themes and complicated theories. I've been through enough of the tertiary education system that I should be able to cope with sociology. I object to the overuse of jargon in the abstract. The abstract should be meaningful to the average university graduate. Writing the abstract in jargon, while it seems 'exact', is a means of isolating various parts of the education community from each other, and discouraging the spread of knowledge. I guess its an antithesis of FLOSS. ___ talk mailing list talk@openstreetmap.org http://lists.openstreetmap.org/listinfo/talk

Basically almost anyone who has edited within Australia within the last couple of years (especially those edits with potlatch) has used the NearMap source or an ABS source, however they will agree to the terms under threat of not being able to continue to participate in the projcet, with no care for the licence of any edits they may have made. Generally people dont care about licence problems, they just get told they have to click a box to continue editing, so they do so. Honestly, how many people do you think that clicked the accept button, actually read the entire new licence and terms and checked that all their previous edits comply? The only purpose this serves, is to taint the project with data that may or may not have rights restrictions, but by the time that becomes an issue no-one will remember what was what.

[Talk-it] Mini-Mapping Party a Treviso il 2 aprile
Create another tag named temporary: followed by the name of the tag of which you want to change the value, and set the value as needed Esempio: highway=unclassified bicycle=designated Supponi di aggiungere temporary:access=no Per quanto detto sopra, temporary:access fa l'override di access (che non c'è), quindi la strada sarebbe taggata come se fosse: highway=unclassified access=no bicycle=designated che vuol dire che le bici ci possono andare!

Accetta come membri solo linee e altre Region quando a me servirebbero aree e multipoligoni. Create another tag named temporary: followed by the name of the tag of which you want to change the value, and set the value as needed Esempio: highway=unclassified bicycle=designated Supponi di aggiungere temporary:access=no Per quanto detto sopra, temporary:access fa l'override di access (che non c'è), quindi la strada sarebbe taggata come se fosse: highway=unclassified access=no bicycle=designated che vuol dire che le bici ci possono andare!

[Talk-ca] Data Source for Surrey Roads
I just finished converting the Surrey road data to a .osm file. This may be of interest to anyone mapping in the Surrey area. I've posted it to http://maps.paulnorman.ca/surrey/SurreyRoads2010.zip along with the ogr2osm translation file I wrote. I'm not planning to import it wholesale, just selectively if I have to update a road, and I plan to move some tags over on major roads (maxspeed, lanes, hgv=*, hazmat=*) Some notes on the strengths and weakness of the data Weaknesses: - Ways are not dualized. This road data was intended for their printed maps which do not have dualized roads. Incidentally, I purchased one of those maps. - Some roads are off in position. Most are extremely good with 40cm error, but some have jogs that are out of place by a few meters. - Odd classifications. Some roads are classified strangely. This only impacts secondary and primary roads. Strengths: - It is very recent, with roads not constructed until late 2010 present in the data - The postions seem slightly better than GeoBase - It has truck access and hazardous material restrictions - It has speed and lane information The tagging of a typical road is highway=residential lanes=2 maxspeed=50 name=58 Avenue source=City of Surrey 2010 GIS Data surface=Asphalt surrey:geodb_oid:496 while a highway looks like hazmat=designated hgv=designated highway=primary etc. ___ Talk-ca mailing list Talk-ca@openstreetmap.org http://lists.openstreetmap.org/listinfo/talk-ca
Re: [Talk-ca] Data Source for Surrey Roads
PDDL - essentially public domain. Surrey makes their data available at http://www.surrey.ca/city-services/658.aspx and the roads data is found as trnRoadCentrelines in SurreyProperty or SurreyTransportation. Surrey really seems to get open data. They make their data available under open terms and provide lots of detail in their shapefiles, and let the users decide what to do. -Original Message- From: Corey Burger [mailto:corey.bur...@gmail.com] Subject: Re: [Talk-ca] Data Source for Surrey Roads Nifty stuff.
