Re: [Talk-ko] The mailing list
You are right. Koreans does not use mailing list. From the starting of Internet in Korea, using portal or bbs for communication is very common. However, the bigger problem is that OSM map is not usable compared with commercial map. As you know and you can read Korean, map of daum and naver is fantastic. So Koreans don't have need for improving OSM. It is typical chicken or egg problem. The other problem is we don't have basic data. As I know, other country have basic data for making OSM. However, in Korea there is no basic data. The reason is partly from 국립지리원. This orgranization is operated by tax. Oddly, even If I wish to use very basic geographical data for public, they want to pay money. As for the Korean documentation, i had translated some materials for OSM. However it seemed like that nobody used it abd i stopped it. This email may be off topic. Regards, Han from Algeria. 2012. 9. 6. 오전 11:13 Andrew Errington erringt...@gmail.com 작성: Hello everyone, It's nice to see some activity on the mailing list. I am the list administrator, but I'm not in charge. I don't have any power- just the power to delete the occasional spam message. :) There are currently 35 members on the mailing list. I'd like to encourage more people to use the mailing list and to discuss issues that crop up with mapping in Korea. I heard recently that Koreans generally don't use mailing lists, and because of that they are unfamiliar with them and reluctant to use them. If this is true I'd like to know how to get over that problem. Since this list was created to talk about mapping in Korea I would really like Koreans to be comfortable using it, since they are most familiar with the country and how it should be represented on a map. There is also the issue that many of the tools and much of the reference materials are not available in the Korean language. The map *is* usable now, and every day it gets better. I would love to see more discussion and more collaboration. If you are bilingual in Korean and English, please consider translating some messages on the mailing list as they appear, or some material in the Wiki. There are also a few things that I myself would like to talk about, so I will start a discussion in a later message. I am still enjoying mapping in Korea, and I hope you all are too. [talk-ph] SOTM 2012 feedback
Hallo Maning and all and to Mario Baras who was at SOTM 2012 and is on this list. I see from Maning's post to the general talk list that he is already familar with the French http://live.openstreetmap.fr/. Now here is an interesting thing. OSM France have also built and are operating a caching download/proxy upload server for editing. It down loads diffs every minute. JOSM users can re-direct their editors to use it instead of the London server. There is also a way to trick Potlatch into using it. For French and many European users it provides much better response. When you upload, then it sends your edit to London. It has been running for 6 months and appears to work correctly. And then another thing: OpenStreetMap France also have funding to do things. But they cannot spend it in France. Dot, dot, dot. So I asked Christian Quest, If there was interest, could they fund a similar server in the Philippines? and got a very positive response with the caveat that a proposal has to be presented to the funding organisation and they can say yes or no. The proposal could consist of a) server(s), b) travel by OpenStreetMap France to the Philippines to train (perhaps not vital but good to create a working relationship) and c) funding to put it in a high availability data centre. So, any interest? In addition to helping poor connections (comments?), I see it as a way to build up a strong system administration team to complement the mapping community. The Philippine and Japan communities are probably the strongest in Asia right now. I would also suggest that it could be used as a H.O.T server to be used in natural calamities if anyone is interested in getting involved there ... that might also improve the chances of funding. Dear Mike, Im glad you met Mario in SOTM2012. Also, congrats on finally getting over with the license change. Hello Mike, Your proposal is actually interesting. However, I am not actually aware of anyone in the OSMPH community who is experienced enough with running and maintaining a server here in the Philippines. The usual strategy I know is that people buy hosting services from data centers in located the United States. Also, I am not familiar with the state of the Internet backbone in the Philippines (PHNET). I'm not 100% sure but I've read of stories where if you want to access a local server in the Philippines, you might sometimes get routed first to the United States depending on which Internet Service Provider you are currently on so having a local server might not actually help with any netowrk latency issues that OSM France's solution hopes to solve. I'm not sure if Apple uses OSM in the actual routable Maps app. For that they are primarily using TomTom data. hi! maintaining a server you need: location space/datacenter network equipmnt (routers/fw/switches) warm bodies to manage 24/7 Internet connection, power aircon you can also outsource in the cloud where you just buy a virtual server and connectivity i used to be a network admin at a telco and i can attest that then, and still now, local peering were all praise releases where telcos don't cooperate plus lazy/ignorant routing engineers i did the inter-network routing work back then (using BGP) to tweak routing parameters to route outgoing traffic to local nwtworks via local links (and not via our US, HK and JP links) but the return traffic I can't control. now i test and tweak OSM routing :) --- http://www.backpackingphilippines.com On Sep 15, 2012, at 8:49 AM, Eugene Alvin Villar sea...@gmail.com wrote: Hello Mike, Your proposal is actually interesting. If you want to add additional wording you could do so. Your wording must make people aware that the data comes from OpenStreetMap and that it is available under the ODbL. Of course, you can only use the ODbL attribution after the new planet is published and you reload your database. If you don't do that then you can't update your data with OSM data either and you need to use the CC BY-SA attribution. [OSM-talk] Another reversion request (sorry)
Hello everyone, The following changesets in Korea have been added by a user without realising the consequences. Firstly, the data may have been imported from somewhere else without permission, and secondly, it's very poor quality data which obscures and does not join with existing data. The original mapper is aware of what's happened, and wants to delete the data but can't. No-one on our list knows quite how do delete such big changesets. http://www.openstreetmap.org/browse/changeset/13007274 http://www.openstreetmap.org/browse/changeset/13007836 http://www.openstreetmap.org/browse/changeset/13012742 If anyone is interested you can review the discussion on the talk-ko list. Anyway, because these are such large imports can someone please revert them? I don't know if there have been many further edits on the data. [OSM-talk] issue with bike sharing preset in josm
Hello, i'm an Italian osmer on talk-it we are thinking there is an issue with amenity=bicycle_rental preset in josm the problem is about translation: we want to translate amenity=bicycle_rental preset as Stazione del Bike Sharing (bike sharing docking station) , but on the launchpad translation page [1] we see that bicycle_rental is translated in a group together with car rental and motorcycle rental, so we cannot change the translation for bicycle_rental only we want to make a different translation of amenity=bicycle_rental preset, to avoid the common situation of users mapping a shop/place renting bikes, as amenity=bicycle_rental instead of shop=bicycle + service:bicycle:rental=yes any possible solutions? thank you. ps:some people is also complaining with the tag (amenity=bicycle_rental) and want to propose to change in something like amenity=bike_sharing or something like that, that avoid misunderstanding but maybe is more complicated [1]https://translations.launchpad.net/josm/trunk/+pots/josm/it/4277/+translate ___ talk mailing list talk@openstreetmap.org http://lists.openstreetmap.org/listinfo/talk

Was macht denn das Board schon?

[OSM-Talk-ZA] New Aerial Imagery
Talk-ZA, I am pleased to announce the availability of new aerial imagery for mappers. http://aerial.openstreetmap.org.za/ The imagery was kindly provided by Chief Directorate of National Geographic Information (CD:NGI) The imagery is 0.5m per pixel, with very accurate position. There are a few missing regions, some are due to my processing of the imagery, others due to missing source imagery. I will be fixing up the imagery over the next year, we will then have full national coverage. The imagery has been added to the Potlatch2 and JOSM presets: * Potlatch2: Click Background (top right), choose South Africa: CD:NGI Aerial * JOSM: Edit - Preferences - WMS/TMS - Imagery Providers, click South Africa: CD:NGI Aerial (2nd from bottom of list) - Click Activate. Please add a source=ngi-aerial tag when using the imagery! In Potlatch2 this can be done by pressing B when the new imagery is set as the background. A big thank you to Lance Burger for his help in getting the imagery for us. The imagery is currently over 3000Gigabytes and will grow to over 4000Gigabytes once complete. The imagery is currently hosted on a slowish connection in the UK. I hope to get better hosting soon. I'll also stick the code onto github later today. [OSM-talk-fr] Comment mapper hors-ligne pendant 2 semaines ?
Re: [OSM-talk-fr] import du bati (was: changeset suspect ?)
