Re: [OSM-talk-be] FOSDEM, booth for HOT, Humanitarian Openstreetmap Team

2016-01-07 Thread Jo
Hi Johan,

Having both booths next to each other would be great indeed. I hope we get
a spot in the K-building (it's warmer there). The devroom will probably be
in that older AW-building, which is relatively far away from it, so it
wouldn't be totally convenient for people who want to attend lectures and
visit/staff the booths...

I get the impression the booths in AW-building are mostly hacker/hardware
related.

A few years ago we were near the entrance of AW while it was freezing and
it was drafty there, so I hope wel don't end up there.

I will pass on the message to the people from HOT that there is still room
for a talk.

Thank you for your quick answer!
Then I'll do either Sunday morning or afternoon (I still have to check what

I'll have a look at your screencasts. And thanks for the hangout and Mumble

The only requierement is to be enthusiastic about OSM. Most people at
FOSDEM already know about it and some like to come and tell about their
experiences with it or to ask how to use it on a specific platform.

There are some Germans who are interested in participating as well. This
means they can bring a poster, which Frederik Ramm may provide. 3 years ago
he created a map of Brussels. That would look totally different by now,
thanks to the UrbIS import.

It was chaos nevertheless , I remember the sweat/rain flavored odor by
having too many people in the same room. The amount of people just
sitting there with the laptops(on their lap) on their knees was
staggering, in that process taking up valuable walking space.

If I were to create a plan to promote OSM, I would be standing at that
outside entrance, handing out flyers and trying to make conversations.

Last year was a bit embarrasing that we arrived and did not know there was
an OSM-stand at all... nobody communicated anything to the belgian mappers.

With much respect said, but the OSM-stand last year was not very good,
maybe because Gael had to do everything by himself. If you ask me we should
try and do things ourselves or at least collaborate very closely. FOSDEM is
in Belgium after all...

Also, OSM is not a tech project, we should promote our community at FOSDEM

2013-02-05 Thread Jo
I think a presentation to introduce Openstreetmap would be very appropriate
there. I guess my French is sufficient to present it, but I think it would
be better if a native speaker would do it. I'm pretty sure parts of the
presentation presented in Mons can be (re)used:

http://www.loligrub.be/wiki/openstreetmap#conference_jeudis_du_libre_du_17_janvier_2013

Didier was going to provide the source document as odt too.

Are you going to ask the organisers if we can give a presentation and a
present a stand? I'm prepared to take that Thursday off from work to man
the stand.

Ben, I hope the Hack weekend was productive!

The first week of July there will be another event around free software
and free content. The RMLL comes to Brussels this time! Usually it's
somewhere in France and last year it was in Switzerland. Too far away for
me. But now that it's nearby we should make sure we represent OSM there.

They would like we do a mapping party on the day for 'le grand public'.
I think we can do 1 or 2 presentations (introductory and more advanced)
and I think it's important we'll have a stand there as well. Maybe with 3
to 5 computers, so people can get some 'hands-on' experience.

And we need 'goodies', of course: T-shirts, but also anoraks/rain coats,
caps, high-viz vests. Cups, pens (muts/bonnet maybe for the die hard
 mappers...) ?
Openstreetmap.fr is working on that, but I'm not entirely sure if they
will be with .fr or with .org then.

The first week of August there is the festival of Esperanza in Floreffe,
where OSM also has a presence, thanks to Pierre Willot.

Re: [OSM-talk] OSM @ FOSDEM!

2012-02-13 Thread Michael Kugelmann

Hello all,

following my short summary of the FOSDEM 2012 at the first weekend in
February at Brussels.

As discussed in advance we had an OSM stand at the FOSDEM.
See e.g. at http://www.openstreetmap.fr/f/IMG_3746_web.jpg
* we had quite a lot of interest on the stand on completeley different
areas:

+ complete newbies (What is OSM? Never heared about it.)
+ OSM users just saying thank you guys, it's wonderful what you as
project are doing = I want to forward this to worldwide all mappers!

+ some mappers asking about how can I map this and that
+ quite some people asking about how can I use OSM on my device
xyz (including Garmin devices)
+ developers who want to show a map on the web e.g. with a special
overlay
+ people asking: can I do this and that with the data? I would be
interested to to do xyz?

+ question: can I trust the data? How verified is it?
  + ...
* once more a big Thanks to Geofabrik / Frederik for the printouts, they
have been very helpful to point to the project!
* flyers went away very quick: after 2..3 hours they were gone (also
Thanks to Geofabrik / Frederik for providing them) = next year have
more flyers
* tablet devices are a good way when you want to show somebody e.g. a
map within a discussion or in the crowd in front of the stand
* For me it was very interesting to work in a multinational team
(mappers being present from Belgium, France, Germany, Slovakia or
Slovenia, ).
* It is benificial to talk to people who have questions in their own
language which we have been able with the international team.
* maybe somebody from the OSM community should do a talk (or lighning
talk) to get some SW developers and not mappers, the audience at FOSSDEM
has a great potential to get other people interested than mappers [1].

* IMHO OSM should be present at FOSDEM 2013 again (another stand).
* the WLAN provided for the conference was working very well at our stand
* on (very) cold weather don't have your stand located too close to the
entrance door...

add [1]: don't get me wrong, I am not at all complaining about mappers!
We need more of them worldwide. But the overall project has not only a
need for people collecting geo facts, IMHO there is also an increasing
need for people developing the tools to process and work with the data.

Best regards,
Michael.

PS: genereal comment on the FOSDEM after my first visit: very
interesting but very tight arranged event (10...20 talks in parallel)
who is worth a travel.

I got the one of Brussels/Etterbeek and I'll use it on some mapping parties
I'm planning to organise. Thanks Frederik! It makes the project more
'tangible'.

 * flyers went away very quick: after 2..3 hours they were gone (also
Thanks to Geofabrik / Frederik for providing them) = next year have more
 flyers

Yes, with 5000 attendants to the conference, we should have around 1000 of
them. But who has money to create them? I took a sample, which I'm planning
to translate into Dutch to hand out to random people I meet while mapping.

 * tablet devices are a good way when you want to show somebody e.g. a map
within a discussion or in the crowd in front of the stand

I'm glad I was able to bring mine and that I was able to help people
install OsmAnd and Vespucci on their Android devices. I was a bit worried
about it getting stolen, though. There is no way to secure it with a
Kensington lock cable. Most people at FOSDEM are decent, but it takes only
one...

 * For me it was very interesting to work in a multinational team (mappers
being present from Belgium, France, Germany, Slovakia or Slovenia, ).

Yes, that was a great experience for me as well. Especially since I went to
present OSM in Normandy the weekend before.

* It is benificial to talk to people who have questions in their own
language which we have been able with the international team.
 * maybe somebody from the OSM community should do a talk (or lighning
talk) to get some SW developers and not mappers, the audience at FOSDEM has

Somebody should indeed get in front of a room of developers and explain
where we stand and what more is needed. I've been doing a presentation in
Holland about the advanced possibilities of JOSM (in Dutch) and another one
in France as a general presentation of the project (in French) and I might
step up to do one in English, if noboby else does. But I'm a bit reluctant
to actually do it. I'm not really used to talk in front of a public.

 * IMHO OSM should be present at FOSDEM 2013 again (another stand).

Absolutely. I'd prefer to be in the K building though (now we were in AW)
and with 2 or maybe even 3 tables.

We should also have some 'swag'. I liked the warm headwear the OpenSuse
project brought. Maybe selling stuff like that a little bit above cost,
could pay for the flyers.

A cap, or a sticker, or a high-viz vest. Or T-shirts, of course. Preferably
something that's useful during cycling or hiking to give the project the
name recognition it needs.

 * the WLAN provided for the conference was working very well at our stand

It's the WLAN of the ULB. I'm sure it works fine throughout all the
buildings, although the FOSDEM crowd probably stresses it quite a bit :-)

 * on (very) cold weather don't have your stand located too close to the
 entrance door...

Ask to be in the K bulding.

I'm happy to print posters like this for events elsewhere; ideally I'd
ship them to a German address to save postage but I can also ship to
other European destinations.

Printing flyers is actually relatively cheap; 10.000 flyers cost about
€200. Geofabrik sponsors the German ones, and the English ones are
currently paid for by the publisher of our English OSM book. What's more
expensive than printing them is usually the shipping. - SVG sources of
German and English flyers are in SVN, under /misc/pr_material.

Bonjour,

We have the pleasure to inform you that your request for a stand
at FOSDEM 2012 has been accepted.

* amount of tables: 1
* in building.: K (first level)
* build-up: from 09:00 on, on Saturday
* teardown: closing is at 18:00 on Sunday

We can provide you with secure space where you may deposit
hardware during the night from Saturday to Sunday. It is closed
and security staff is on the campus all the time, but we do not
provide insurance nor take responsibility in case of damage or
theft.

Please try to have everything torn down by 18:00 on Sunday, as
we have to clean everything up on Sunday night.

We put a certain amount of tables at your disposal (see above),
each having a size of about 2m by 1m:
https://fosdem.org/2012/files/stands-table.jpg

Note that we do not provide any clothing but you are more than
welcome to provide any on your own, especially if you have
something like a banner for your project.

We will provide you with power sockets (*) but if you have a
couple of extension cables, we recommend you do bring them along
if possible.

Re: [OSM-talk-be] [FOSDEM] Call for stands, devroom talks and lightning talks

2011-11-16 Thread Jo
Do you think there might be interest in a talk about scripting JOSM
with Python or about configuring JOSM until it brewes you a cup of tea
without even using tea leaves, just like on the HHGTG?

2011/11/16 Marc Coevoet sintsix...@gmail.com:
 Dear Hackers,

We hereby invite any and all open source projects to participate in FOSDEM
2012 by manning a stand for the weekend, by giving a talk in a devroom or by
giving a 15 minute talk in our lightning talk room.

 See http://fosdem.org/2012/call-for-participation
 on how to submit proposals.

 * Manning a stand
We offer open source projects a place for a stand in the hallways. Stands
can be used to share information, demo software, sell merchandising, give
 away goodies and so forth.
Stands allow projects to present themselves to the visitors in a more
 personal fashion.

 See http://fosdem.org/2012/call-for-stands for more details

 * Talking in a devroom
We will be hosting 25 (!) different devrooms, covering a broader spectrum of
the open source landscape than any year before.

The accepted devrooms are: Ada -- BSD licensed operating systems --
Configuration and Systems Management -- Cross Desktop -- Distribution
Miniconf -- Embedded -- Free Java -- Graph Processing -- Hardware Security
 and Cryptography -- JBoss.org -- Legal Issues -- LibreOffice -- Mono --
Mozilla -- Multiserver -- microkernel-based operating systems -- MySQL and
Friends -- Open Mobile Linux -- Open Source Game Development -- Open Source
Telephony -- Open Source Virtualization and Cloud -- Perl -- PostgreSQL --
Smalltalk -- World of GNUstep -- X.org and OpenICC

See http://fosdem.org/2012/call-for-participation for the list of
announcements or contact devro...@fosdem.org for a contact address.

 * Lightning talks
We have a special lightning talk room for all remaining open source projects
that do not fit in any of the devrooms.
Lightning talks are short 15 minute focussed talks in which one person gets
to present the project or an aspect of it.

 See http://fosdem.org/2012/call-for-lightningtalks for more details.

FOSDEM is organized by and for the community, non-commercial and highly
developer-oriented. Its goal is to provide Free and Open Source developers a
 place to meet.
Now is the time to become part of it.

 The FOSDEM organizers.

Hallo iedereen,

slecht is
 devroom of stand.

(http://www.openmoko.org)

Groot in ieder geval).

Groeten,

Christ van Willegen
