what are the tags for sitio/purok and gated community (those unmapped areas)? we don't have defined boundaries of most of them in our lists yet; but they need to be tagged particularly those in the rural areas - for searching purposes (of their general location to aid future mappers) On Mon, Jun 1, 2009 at 9:53 AM, maning sambale emmanuel.samb...@gmail.comwrote: Made seav's proposal official ;) http://wiki.openstreetmap.org/wiki/WikiProject_Philippines/Mapping_conventions#Administrative_boundaries Please expand the wiki especially on proper tagging of boundaries (relations) cheers, maning On Mon, May 4, 2009 at 12:18 PM, maning sambale emmanuel.samb...@gmail.com wrote: Added a your proposal in the mapping conventions page: http://wiki.openstreetmap.org/wiki/WikiProject_Philippines/Mapping_conventions#Administrative_boundaries I propose we replace the old scheme, once other people have commented/raised their reactions. Aside from the pork barrel, the representatives don't *administer* their territories. I think these should be tagged as boundary=legislative/congressional and not as boundary=administrative.[2] I've done a bit more research since my initial e-mail and here is my proposed values for admin_level: 2 - National border 3 - Regions 4 - Provinces 5 - Sangguniang Panlalawigan districts (if any) 6 - Cities/Municipalities 7 - Sangguniang Panlungsod/Bayan districts (if any) 8 - Other administrative districts[3] (if any) 9 - Zones (if any) 10 - Barangays 12 - Sitios/Puroks (if any, but only if boundaries are defined) The Sangguniang Lalawigan/Lungsod/Bayan districts are mentioned in Republic Act No. 7887[4]. These districts basically apportion the members of the LGU's Sanggunian. Since the Sanggunian is an administrative entity (it's the one that creates the local laws or ordinances), then it's proper that their districts also be given admin_levels. These proposed values have the proviso that admin_level=3 is *not* automatically an admin_level=4|5 due to the weird nature of Isabela City and the ARMM. (But, as long as all boundaries are grouped into relations, then there should be no problem with interpretations.) Eugene / seav - [1] The proper legal term is legislative district. [2] We can also have boundary=judicial (for the jurisdictions of the Regional and Metropolitan trial courts) and boundary=police (like Manila's Western Police District). Also, Catholic archdioceses and dioceses, anyone (boundary=catholic)? :-) [3] Examples of other non-Sanggunian districts: A. Manila has 6 Sangguniang districts (I to VI) co-terminous with the legislative districts and these are further subdivided into 17 geographical districts: Tondo 1, Tondo 2, Sta. Cruz, Sampaloc, Sta. Mesa, Quiapo, Binondo, San Miguel, San Nicolas, Port Area, Intramuros, Paco, Pandacan, Ermita, Malate, Sta. Ana, and San Andres. These districts are further subdivided into 100 zones. (Tondo 1 and Tondo 2 used to be one district, while San Andres used to be part of Sta. Ana and Sta. Mesa used to be part of Sampaloc.) B. Iloilo City has 6 districts: Arevalo, City Proper, Jaro, La Paz, Mandurriao, and Molo. (Iloilo City has only 1 legislative district.) C. Davao City has 3 Sangguniang districts (1 to 3) co-terminous with the legislative districts and these are further subdivided into 11 administrative districts: Poblacion, Talomo, Agdao, Buhangin, Bunawan, Paquibato, Baguio, Calinan, Marilog, Toril, and Tugbok. D. Pasay City has 7 districts (1 to 7) subdivided into 20 zones. (Pasay City has only 1 legislative district.) N.B. Quezon City districts like Cubao, Diliman, La Loma, San Francisco del Monte, Projects 2,3,4,5,6,7,8, etc. DO NOT have legally defined borders so they won't have a place in the admin_level scheme. Re: [talk-ph] welcome new osm-ph list subscribers
Hi Totor, Welcome to the family. :-) I've done a bit of mapping in Cebu over the last year or so, but not much actually in the city. I did a lot up north, on a holiday to Malapascua island (which you should visit by the way - a lovely beach getaway), and then filled in a few of the other roads from an out-of-copyright map Maning slipped me. As the map at the time was virgin territory (well compared to Manila anyway), then I was focusing mainly on getting the roads in and relocating the towns and villages, which were often several KM out of place. I didn't pay much attention to the types of roads, figuring someone like yourself would be along sooner or later to tidy up. So anyway, please feel free to go ahead and re-classify roads however it makes sense to you. Some of the roads I put in from the out of copyright map need to be verified. I think these are tagged with source=50k map or something like that, and they'll have no names. But once again I felt that putting any roads in at all is better than no roads, as they add a framework that people can add to. As the satellite imagery in Yahoo is rather poor for Cebu Island, then the framework of roads and GPS traces is pretty much all you have to work with for now. As for classifying the roads, I don't think the classifications as envisaged by the OSM originators in UK have much relevance to the Philippines (what's a trunk road for example here?), but I figure the most useful thing we can do is to classify in terms of importance, which gives a sense of the road network. Clearly there are some roads in the Philippines which carry a lot of traffic, and are very important, but which would probably only be classified as secondary or tertiary roads in Europe. So I tend to think in terms of ... Primary roads carry the most traffic, followed by secondary, followed by tertiary. That kind of thing ... I'm probably going to get some reaction from the forum for this ... like all families we have our disagreements! But when I'm mapping I tend to think in terms of What is going to be most useful to people using the map rather than How exactly can I follow the mapping rules. In the case of Cebu right now, my feeling would be to get as many roads and GPS traces in there first, and then figure out the minute details of classification later. Once the road framework is in there, then people without GPS units can go ahead and fill in all the buildings and Points of Interest. My 2 centavos only ... Jim Totor Osm wrote, On Friday, 29 May, 2009 09:28 PM: When I'm back, I'd need some clarifications, or guidelines, on how to classify the roads here in Cebu. I have difficulties in relating the guidelines about the tags to the reality. Right now, there is primary roads, and residential roads mainly. I don't know how to improve this, since some main large roads (like A.S. Fortuna) don't even have a dividing line (this means it is 1 lane only ?) but the trafic is driving on 4 lanes (2 each side)... The Cebu North road, really gets narrow at some sections when going south, and would not be considered a main road abroad in those sections... The South (SRP) road is now mapped as a single motorway. It should be 2 one way roads... 3 lanes each if I remember well. But can it be a motorway road ? It is the closest to a motorway I ever saw here in Cebu, but I'm not sure there is a hard shoulder, there are many intersections and traffic lights, often tricycles also ride there... I guess a trunk road would be more appropriate. Anyway, it's there in JOSM's preset tags, so maybe we don't have a choice after all (for using this sub-zone sub-village tag). Let's see how it goes. I just don't know if these will clutter the map by tagging every purok we can positively identify in the rural and urban areas. Unlike in some parts of the globe, they are usually located far apart. Urban puroks are only a couple of blocks away from each other (although there is less need for tagging these (urban puroks) because streetnames are already available for searching, without the need to know the purok names, unlike in the province). I think we're running into the programmers confuse legal agreements with code problem. If the OSMF went into a court of law and tried to claim that, because your computer connected once upon a time to OSM, that everything your computer ever did thereafter had to be copyrighted CC-By-SA, the judge would laugh the OSMF out of court, IF he didn't fine the OSMF for contempt of court. In order for a contract to be enforceable it must be a reasonable contract. On Jun 1, 2009, at 4:02 PM, Francis Davey wrote: 2009/6/1 Russ Nelson r...@cloudmade.com: Note the (non-exclusively). [OSM-talk] Where to place OSM-WMS tutorial?

I placed the result of my first trial to http://wiki.openstreetmap.org/wiki/Image:OSM_with_mapserver_3.jpg. I am considering to write detailed instructions for those who have never before installed or used Mapserver about how to set up a similar WMS service but I do not know where to put the tutorial. Any suggestions? Users should have a possibility to download a ready made Mapserver mapfile (it is plain text) from that place so they could start making maps with default styles immediately. There is nothing wrong in the existing OSM tile based rendering and serving systems but I believe there is also room and need for a more flexible on-demand rendering through WMS. WMS, if used without tilecache system, tends to be ten or more times slower than tileservers, but WMS does also have some advantages like layer control, reprojection on-the-fly, printing large maps with 5000 by 5000 pixels or more, direct use in GIS programs (or JOSM), output to many file formats including GeoTIFF etc. ___ talk mailing list talk@openstreetmap.org http://lists.openstreetmap.org/listinfo/talk

My main concern is should I import data as is or optimize this data as they are quite detailed? Also each region border is one separate polygon. Should I merge neighbour region nodes and import seperate border lines or again should I leave data as is? there is a general consensus on using relations for this type of data: http://wiki.openstreetmap.org/wiki/Relations/Proposed/Boundaries at least some countries have done this. a way for every border, cut where it meets any other border then tagged accordingly and but in a relation with all the other way of the same kind (i.e. all the ways that make up the border of a single municipality). -- -S ___ talk mailing list talk@openstreetmap.org http://lists.openstreetmap.org/listinfo/talk

You're thinking of the wrong unclassified. Unclassified here does not mean the road in OSM is not classified, or does not have a better designation, it means that it is designated as unclassified (that is: not motorway, primary, secondary, tertiaty) in the real world. Anyone with svn access can augment the Potlatch preset/autocomplete files, they're all in easy-to-understand text: http://trac.openstreetmap.org/browser/sites/rails_port/config/potlatch/ I do however reserve the right, should you add smoothness=very_horrible, to remove it again, and additionally to come round to your house and kill you. FWIW I personally think highway=road is not generally of much use in 90% of cases. Whether you're tracing from Yahoo or NPE or whatever, you can very often work out what highway value the road should have. Certainly, if it were to be added to the preset menu, it'd need to be with a very clear description of what it's intended for - road, unsure of type or something like that. cheers Richard -- View this message in context: http://www.nabble.com/Potlatch-and-sketching-from-aerial-imagery-tp23823385p23823663.html Sent from the OpenStreetMap - General mailing list archive at Nabble.com. ___ talk mailing list talk@openstreetmap.org http://lists.openstreetmap.org/listinfo/talk

Yes, but if highway=road were in the list, people might read up on what it meant so that when adding all those country lanes they don't tag every single one as tertiary so as not to say that they've not been classified (i.e. they avoid the use of unclassified, rather than avoid the use of road). Re: [OSM-talk-nl] chipknip
Re: [Talk-de] Probleme beim gpx-Export in Mapsource 6.15.x
