Re: [OSM-talk-be] Bingify Belgium
Hi guys, I'm personally working on this, mainly my hometown area of Hulshout and the surrounding towns. My focus is (in order): 1) roads (missing + aligning) 2) rivers / railway (missing + aligning) 3) landuse 4) city borders On some parts (roads), sometimes I wonder about the actual road surface (paved/unpaved) and this typically triggers me to go and visit the road to see its condition. But this is rather hard with this weather :D Also some parts to watch out for, which I already experienced: don't try to blindly trust bing data, the data isn't perfectly current. For example in my town of Houtvenne there is a new street (at least 1 year old), which is not visible on Bing yet, but which I mapped earlier on by means of GPX tracks. My personal rule is, if the landuse are really connected (there is nothing between them, or only a barrier) I reuse the same nodes. If there is a highway, or a track between them I trace the three of them separated. I never connect a landuse to a highway, to do so would require to draw the highway as an area to connect the correct edge to the landuse. I think that a highway drawn as a single line is supposed to correspond to the center of the road/way. -- Renaud Michel ___ Talk-be mailing list Talk-be@openstreetmap.org http://lists.openstreetmap.org/listinfo/talk-be

Some features are next to impossible to map by surveying. (forests, rivers, lakes, buildings, landuse). So I'm really grateful with Bing's decision to let us use their imagery. I noticed that around Leuven/Diest all the imagery is 3 years old. Of course some things have changed in the mean time, but mostly it's very useable and certainly better than nothing at all. I try to make landuses as big as possible and I do connect it to the highways. It gives the best result when exporting to PDF and printing them, especially at high zoom levels. When working on a region I first trace the smaller features like buildings, orchards, forests, then residential/commercial landuse, then farmland. in between. The quality of the map is increasing tremendously, hopefully the database won't get overloaded... Jo ___ Talk-be mailing list Talk-be@openstreetmap.org http://lists.openstreetmap.org/listinfo/talk-be

If tracings from Bing can be distributed under a CC BY-SA license then again the OSM community should be made aware of this so we can use this as a mapping source. I.e. you are not happy with applying your (rather skewed IMHO) interpretation of legal matters to your own work, but you would prefer to force it on everyone else in the project, stopping them from using Bing until the available documentation matches your personal interpretation, is that right? Sorry I don't understand. Have you applied the same rigor to other data sources that were widely believed to be usable, e.g. Yahoo? I think I've only used Yahoo once or twice. This was before I looked into the legal foundations. Since this, I couldn't find a license from Yahoo, so I determined that I should not use Yahoo as I'm not An observation. It seems we have two camps. One like Yahoo and Microsoft who allegedly say tracing from imagery they serve and uploading it to OSM is not against their terms of service, and make no mention of any copyright rights of such works. And another camp like Nearmap, Landsat, etc. who don't mention anything in their terms of service, but instead grant the imagery under a license that allows derivative works to be released under some other CC-BY-SA compatible license. My only concern is that for the first case, even though its not against their terms of service, we still may not have the permissions from people who are able to grant us a copyright license to use such data. I see these two things as independent of one another, and I thought that we need both to be checked before we can use a service for deriving information. Of course its a real mess because as this is an international project, some countries may say that tracing does not create a derivative work so the tracer can use any license (or none) that they wish, others may say that tracing does create a derivative work so you need a license from the copyright holder to distribute any traced data. I don't know, this is just how I'm seeing it from all the evidence I've seen. ___ legal-talk mailing list legal-talk@openstreetmap.org http://lists.openstreetmap.org/listinfo/legal-talk

Just curiosity here, but you're saying you intentionally delete the history of objects? No, you cannot delete the history of an object from the database through the API. Doesn't that breach the BY part of CC-BY-SA? I usually put a note=created from relation xyz or so on the new object, so anyone who wants to make the connection to the previous object and its history, can still find out - it's just not possible *automatically* anymore. But then this whole thing is a damage limiting exercise that I do when the API times out on retrieving the history (a 1000-object relation with 1000 members as a *very large* history), so it's not that I'm making anything worse ;) Bye Frederik ___ legal-talk mailing list legal-talk@openstreetmap.org http://lists.openstreetmap.org/listinfo/legal-talk

I think we may be talking about different things. I thought the question was about using a virtual server rather than a dedicated one. It sounds like it is about using a virtual machine on a desktop. In that case you are right that running the database on the host will work better than on the guest operating system. Some people are very attached to Windows though! Yes, that's what I thought the OP meant by VM, a virtual server such as those offered by Bytemark. I've been lucky enough to have 25/30cm imagery from USGS in most of my area, but this 6cm stuff is awesome. And cheers to the implementation for JOSM - it's incredibly fast and agile. Truly an important step for OSM. I'm getting concerned about data loss, the fact that any external database accumulating information on such vulnerable nodes, e.g. [1], will only with difficulty and guesswork be able to match it to the way that replaced it. I favor using the existing node as part of the new way, then removing the tags from it. This preserves its history. However, I don't believe people should ever count on OSM IDs to be at all permanent - they aren't designed to be. I'm thinking that if we reserve coastline for ways that are on the coast ie. ocean on one side, land on the other. Hello, yea it only works with Internet Explorer. However if we'd get a agreement i would do the import script. It is about 530.000 phone booths just for Telemar. The geolocation is included in detail as WGS Minutes. For import i should load the actual dump and export the booths with osmosis and check for the next phone booth. If no is in a range of 100 Meter, it will be added. The best to come: Details like adress and phone number is included as well as the information if the booth can make long distance calls. This is worth to import ... However first somebody with native language skills should kiss the ass of anatel before we're dreaming about import... ;-) Here's a data example with IE: http://img697.imageshack.us/gal.php?g=image4ri.png Even great to locate cep codes!
Daher muss man schon sehr genau analysieren was schief gelaufen ist. | please help by giving hints, about how this potlatch bug can be reproduced | http://trac.openstreetmap.org/ticket/2501 Dein Editor hat's verkackt, xybot hat's repariert.
Aadressandmetega olen niikaugel, et mõtlesin : a) jätan sisse vaid need kus on majanumber või majanimi (talud) olemas. See peaks külad jms välja jätma b) seal on ikkagi palju kinnistuid nimedega stiilis x alajaama, y kõnnitee jne. Tekitasin nimekirja nimeosadest, mida me ei taha näha majanimes.
