Re: [talk-ph] armchair mapping Quiapo area
Dear OSM-PH and Hotties, Just a word of thanks to those who helped in mapping Quiapo area [0]. Your contribution helped a lot in the buildup of our dataset for our DRR project. After our mapping event, we believe we covered 50% of all buildings in the area [1]. A subsequent field mapping was done by our staff and local partner which increased the coverage to ~70%. We will continue validating the data and in the coming days, test the suitability of the information into InaSafe's impact modelling [2]. There are a few more tasks that need to be completed in the extended areas around Quiapo, and, we encourage you fill in the gaps. One thing we observed during the validation is that while the initial tracing is very helpful, sometimes, poor tracing can influence the quality of validation in the field using field/walkingpapers particularly for highly urbanized areas like our site. Some research calls this path dependency effect, where, “the first iterations have a high impact on the final results due to a path dependency effect.” A good discussion I found was from Patrick Meier's blog [3]. Re: [OSM-talk] mapbook v0.02
Hi Stefan, Unfortunately I got distracted and it has not got any further than a prototype. The idea is that there is a web front end to allow you to select the map you would like to be produced (map style, paper size, contours, hill shading etc), and any number of renderer computers will look at it to see if there is a request for them. It will then render the map and up load it to the web server. It is quite similar to maposmatic, but the idea is that there are more facilities to customise the map. I gave up on using fancy libraries like codeigniter/bonfire because it was taking too long to learn, so it is a very simple home made php based web front end. The daemon that runs on the renderer computers is written in python and does the data handling (things like creating contours and hill shading). The code is at https://github.com/jones139/disrend. If there is interest in developing this, I could move it up my list of things to do. Regards Graham. Re: [OSM-talk] Survey for people with color vision deficiencies about the street classes in OSM's Mapnik style
Sorry for the super late reply. Actually I am not too convinced about proposing the color scheme, the test results were good overall but not as perfect as I hoped. Plus the colors are quite strong compared to other things in the style (see below). It would have been better to vary more than the colours (like Graham said). I did not vary anything else at all. Some small examples are at http://geomatik.enjoys.it/driffield.html I'll have to render more examples to properly show it. The colors are probably too strong to be considered for the main map. I got quite interested in the color mess that the mapnik style is though, maybe I will try to tackle that a bit. Results will be written about once the grade is in. The new color scheme did improve the identifiability overall (silly measure) and in most cases. On the lower zoomlevels (7 and 10) some classes were being confused more often though. Re: [talk-au] 4WD only tags
Hello Li what happens when a track is tagged with 4wd_only=yes and grade=6? Technically I'd see no issue having both those key combos present. In practice not good in that one must be wrong but that won't upset OSM. In the mainstream maps, the way should be rendered according to grade6. The renderers already recognise tracktype so its relatively easy to extend to grades 6, 7 and 8. The renderers don't observe 4wd_only and sadly probably won't. But other applications will still be free to note one or the other of course. How they cope if they actually observe both and note the conflict I guess is up to the app it self. Re: [talk-au] 4WD only tags
Hi Li, I still don't see a problem. Firstly, I am not aware of any publicly visible map that uses the 4wd_Only tag. Maybe I am wrong, can you point me to one ? But even if there is, and it renderes as you say, then its still OK really. We'd see a dotted line and 4wd Recommended appended to the name. Like the rest of the OSM database, incorrect date entered will give incorrect results. I'd like to see all grade5, grade6, grade7 and grade8 roads rendered as a single or double dotted line, Some, depending on their highway= tag may have a coloured fill. The 6, 7 and 8 have text appended to the name, 5 does not. In your example, grade6 will have 4wd Recommended) appended but we know its also got 4wd_Only=yes set. Well thats wrong but its wrong because the wrong tags have been stored in the database. If someone spots it, maybe they will fix it and all will be good. Even if it does not get fixed, people will still be alerted to the fact that it might be a road needing thinking about. Thats better that what we have now were the mainstream renderers ignore 4wd_only and we don't have a tracktype higher than grade5. Re: [talk-au] traffic lights on dual carriageway intersections
So, Ian Sergeant has presented reasoning why we should not pursue more complicated schemes for applying traffic lights to intersections of dual carriageways - fair enough. This brings me back to the incident that triggered me to start this thread: there are several intersections of dual carriageways in Perth CBD where only 1 of the 4 nodes are marked with traffic lights, and this struck me as wrong, and hence I asked what was the correct and accepted method. If we are to reject the more complex solution of adding traffic lights one node back from the interesting nodes (as implemented in Melbourne CBD, and reasoned against by Ian), surely we should be marking all 4 intersection nodes as having traffic lights ?? I'd be happy to see a more detailed schema that is expressive enough to indicate where the stop line is, the physical location of the signals, which signals are in sync, how many signals on a journey, etc. The current one tag/independent node system means that you need to make a choice in what you can represent. Since I can't see a way to generally and accurately represent traffic light count in the current schema, I think that is the wrong choice to represent just on dual carriageways. DERM's physical roads dataset dated 28/9/2010 has a TOURNUM field, but this only seems to contain a few tourist drives: 1, 5, 8, 9, 10, 16, 22, 23, 42, 43, 99, LA and z (the last two I suspect are not named correctly). 2. RACQ's trip planner: http://www.racq.com.au/travel/drive_travel/trip_planner#directions:route/Kuranda/Mareeba/Tolga/Malanda-Atherton_Road_East_Barron_/Yungaburra/Malanda/Millaa_Millaa/PALMERSTON,_QUEENSLAND/Innisfail This has a button top left (right most button) to toggle tourist drives. I am not sure if these are official tourist drives (are there such things - does the government decide on them, and what level of government?), but it's a start. I'm just wondering if there's an automated method to extract these features from their web map. I sent RACQ an email asking for the data, who knows how that will go. Still looking for a definitive source of tourist drive dataset. Let me know if you find anything.
Wo will man da jetzt die Grenze ziehen?

Wo will man da jetzt die Grenze ziehen? -- Maurizio Daniele - maurizio.daniele (a) gmail.com ___ Talk-it mailing list Talk-it@openstreetmap.org http://lists.openstreetmap.org/listinfo/talk-it

Brian, Nice work J The ethnicity point is interesting. We might see if we can create a buddy system for scholars. I've already had a download from them of text and images for general stuff about why Birmingham is so great. By COP Thursday they will send me quotes for and availability of venues for first half Sept. Venues will be able to take 300-350 delegates with at least one breakout room for 150, a meeting room, an exhibition/lunch space and an organizers room. I stressed the need for wifi that can take high volumes and a mobile phone network mast nearby that can take 300 extra phone in its stride and enough bandwidth into the venue to cope with our use and espaecially live streaming. ( I also mentioned the facility in Tokyo of having an electric socket at each seat in the lecture theatre). Initially they'll be looking at venues close to the city centre to meet the criteria of being close to accommodation/entertainment. Their online bid system is not worth using - too proprietary and difficult to learn - so we should use Evernote. They'll approach Digital Birmingham and Visit England to support our Bid, we can also use MeetBirmingham ( which is the bit of Marketing Birmingham that the Convention Bureau belongs to) as a bid supporter. They confirmed that we can use their online voucher site for delegate discounts to clubs/bars/attrractions etc. ( lots of businesses are listed on this) They've confirmed that the new Birmingham Library will be open Sep 3rd so there might be something they can help with for a viewing of the new Shakespeare archive as a conference event. Comments welcome as to what should go out to Talk GB; anything about venue or what I've done so far Last year the request for venue went out Dec 1st with bids due in by Dec 24th so we need to get our skates on. Holla spanish community, (sorry I can't write in spanish, but maybe someone of you might translate it, for your mappers that only speak spanish?) I'd like to announce the fellow of the night of the living maps party: Operation cowboy : http://wiki.openstreetmap.org/wiki/Operation_cowboy Guess what, this time it's about mapping the America :) Maybe the people from spain will start a local party und assist the US community? The date is the weekend from 23.11 till Sunday, so everybody should have a chance to get a day, where he can join a local party. To make it more easy to get a room, I give you this announcement already today, even if there are still some todos (detailed mission statement, party map, logo, ...). So please still wait with an official announcement to the public, I bet we can fix this things next week. So if you like to *start a local party* , create a wiki page (or reuse the local user group page or your city page) and paste/adapt this: http://wiki.openstreetmap.org/wiki/Template:Operation_cowboy Cool mappers can add this button to the user page, too ;) http://wiki.openstreetmap.org/wiki/Template:User_OPC But hey, I would *need still some help* , to get all the things ready: 1. *Wiki translation* Would be great if the wiki could be translated in other spanish as well. (maybe you can recycle old NOTLM translations)? 2. *Social media* Is there anybody who likes to start further social channels as facebook etc? It's pretty simple, just to spread the things we post at Twitter and of course answer questions and present the project (create events ...). Later: Creating a thank you all poster with all teams or actually a video clip with animated edits and country music would be a great finale :) If you have any questions/ideas, just post it (sorry in english please). I think all general critics on armchair mapping or our choice of the target area would be better in a seperated topic, as the past showed, that they generate a lot of traffic.
Re: [Talk-at] Humanitarian Mapping in Österreich
