Hi, On Sat, Mar 15, 2014 at 11:03:41AM -0400, Phil! Gold wrote: If, however, you want to foster a community around a larger scale project, I think share-alike is a better path to take. If OSM switched to public domain licensing today, there would almost certainly be more people using and benefiting from today's OSM data. Google in particular would probably make OSM data part of its data; they already merge numerous public domain datasets into their proprietary dataset. That would make Google the better choice for a lot of people than plain OSM data, and you can even edit Google's data through their Map Maker program. From there, I suspect that Map Maker would attract more people that might otherwise have ended up contributing to OSM, which would hurt community growth and benefit Google at the expense of all the other OSM data consumers. But this is technically impossible. Either you take OSM and the flow of changes of contributers for a certain area, or you take some snapshot and let your community edit it by cutting off the OSM stream. Google might take OSM data - so what - but either they cut themselves off the OSM change stream by advertising their MapMaper or stop offering MapMaker and use our changes. For technical reasons Google cant use OUR data and THEIR community. In my opinion, the single biggest thing that makes OSM valuable is the community of people contributing to it, and the license on the data needs to reinforce that community, not allow proprietary data uses to splinter it. OSM as a Dataset is just half of the story without the community and steady growing changes and fixes. So its impossible for ANYONE to get the full OSM benefit without the community. IMO a share alike does not get new contributions but hinders adoption. I want good and current maps everywhere - Be it Google, Audi, BMW, Mercedes, VW or Bing. I dont want to deal with politics or economics. OSMs benefit is the community, currentness and grade of detail. This cant be achieved by our commercial counterparts. So we have already won the battle on all grounds. Its just a matter of time. IMO we lost concerning our License. We have much better Map Data - so why does BMW offer Google? IMO because it doesnt require BMW to think about it. They can mix in their data and preprocessing and noone will be questioning BMW about an ODbL and where the Database is. They can put in their RTTI data in the DB and dont even need to tell people how it works. OSM will never be available at that level of simplicity with the current Share Alike. So why not set this threshold higher? Say 10 km? Validator rules are a good thing, but I think that length of a way that has layer=* to detect misuse of the layer tag is beside the point. Whatever threshold you use, there'll false-positives and false-negatives. How about something along the lines of negative layer but no tunnel tag (or positive/bridge) and no/too many crossing ways ? I am now thinking about unless absolutely necessary the size of objects tagged with a layer tag should not exceed a size which would be typically downloaded for editing in this area. but the wiki page already says * Tag shortest possible/practical sections of ways. Long viaducts and tunnels can be tagged with a suitable single value for their entire length for simplicity although it may sometimes be better to adjust the layer along its length to accommodate more complicated crossings. * Use the smallest suitable layer value. Only use layer=2 for a bridge that passes over a feature that is already at level 1; similarly only use layer=-2 for a tunnel that passes below another tunnel. For convenience some higher values are often locally used/reserved for very long bridges or underground networks where it is assumed that they are above/bellow most other crossings/objects in the area. - which should be good enough if people don't interpret the text in some unforseen way. Hi, 2014-03-16 10:38 GMT+01:00 Florian Lohoff f...@zz.de: For technical reasons Google cant use OUR data and THEIR community. Can't follow this argument: Data fusion is technically feasible beyond filling the holes. Even if argued in favour of CC-BY before, the current status quo of the Share-alike makes me comfortable just because of this point: not getting exploited by big companies only. As said before, I'm concerned about small and medium companies (SME) and about governement being possibly constrained by ODbL. I'd like to renew following statements of Steve and Simon: 2014-03-14 16:09 GMT+01:00 Steve Coast st...@asklater.com: Alex makes a bunch of these statements like that, I’ll pick three that jump out: 1) the assumption that share-alike encourages contribution is a myth” 2) The reality is that OpenStreetMap is only used extensively in situations where the share-alike license does not apply, for instance, map rendering. 3) OpenStreetMap's current licensing is stunting our growth And respond: 1) Data would be useful either way Agreed - except some license related caveats. 2) I’d say that’s because OSM doesn’t contain a lot of address or navigation data (which, as it happens, is where the money is), not because of the license. 3) My personal belief is it might stunt CloudMade or MapBox, but not Telenav or MapQuest, and, http://wiki.openstreetmap.org/wiki/Stats doesn’t show a lot of evidence of being stunted. This last observation makes me wonder: SME should have a disadvantage because of the license: Perhaps a legal service of OSMF would help? To renew Simon's following question: 2014-03-14 10:58 GMT+01:00 Simon Poole si...@poole.ch: One thing I would like to hear about in this context of this discussion, are examples of concrete use cases that are not happening because of share alike and that are in general things that the community would like to support Here's the OpenEcoMap use case: In urban and regional planning OSM can complement governement data with POIs not maintained by them (OpenEcoMap). Here OSM is being combined with legally different (non-PD) governement data. Now, it should be possible to combine OSM and governement data for doing spatial analysis and maps without 'affecting' governement data. OSM vector data is not being put in the same database. It's either being overlayed/intersected/compared within analysis with governement data - and it's being shown in a separate layer on the map. --Stefan 2014-03-16 20:53 GMT+01:00 NopMap ekkeh...@gmx.de: Lets jump into this discussion late but with an exceptionally short statement: A few years ago, I checked the box All my contributions to OSM data are in the public domain.
___ Talk-it mailing list Talk-it@openstreetmap.org https://lists.openstreetmap.org/listinfo/talk-it

___ Talk-it mailing list Talk-it@openstreetmap.org https://lists.openstreetmap.org/listinfo/talk-it

Que us vagi be i aprofiteu la trobada. Salut. Salut! [Talk-ca] imaginary mapping (401 and Hurontario)
Hello all, There was a new mapper who changed the traffic pattern of highway 401 near Hurontario recently. With help from Steve's gps trace I've repaired it to the best of my ability. There was also an update to be made because of the legitimately new traffic pattern in the area after the recent construction. The new mapper was contacted and gently pointed toward some more conventional mapping practices but has not yet replied. If you are here, say hi! :-) To review for new mailing list readers, the OpenStreetMap data base is for current existing geographic data. You can play with OSM data to build hypothetical or historic workls, but don't do that in the real data base. You can use either the developers data base, or a private data base that you host yourself for those activities. Ask, if you wish to do these things and need more instruction. If you are interested in mapping historical objects (which have no current geographic presence) there is a mailing list for that! The challenges to that type of mapping are many, so get involved in the discussion and benefit from the experienced voice on that list. So, the 401 construction should be reflected in good order at the moment. Check and improve my work please, if you are local and have new GPS traces. Watch out for aerial imagery in that area! The construction is newer than the aerial imagery! Best regards and Happy Mapping, Richard ___ Talk-ca mailing list Talk-ca@openstreetmap.org https://lists.openstreetmap.org/listinfo/talk-ca

-- Úplně bokem pak stojí PSČ - domy z různých obcí můžou mít stejné PSČ, a naopak různé domy dokonce i v jedné části obce můžou mít PSČ různé.

A zkoušel někdo self-join a st_contains ? Měly by stačit body s rozumným tagem place. Re: [OSRM-talk] Beginner question: default car profile and tracktype/smoothness/surface
I investigated on this idea a bit further. I tried to arrive at numbers that when multiplied would make sense to me, but in the end your suggestion of speed limits for each tag made more sense. So, instead I would now agree with taking the minimum of the following speeds: default, max, tracktype limit, smoothness limit, and other things. And I have a new suggestion: we can try to guess tracktype and smoothness from surface, but only do so when these tags are missing. I've come to this conclusion after learning what tracktype means exactly: https://lists.openstreetmap.org/pipermail/tagging/2014-March/016904.html I've also asked the opinion of the community on this idea: https://lists.openstreetmap.org/pipermail/tagging/2014-March/016935.html I'd like to hear your opinion about adding the following code to https://github.com/DennisOSRM/Project-OSRM/blob/master/profiles/car.lua: 1. Re: [Talk-us] Geopolitical divisions in Ohio
Hi David, On 21:54 2014-03-15, David Days wrote: Minh, I appreciate your response--a little more detail on my end might help answer some of your questions and clarify my goals. I live near Portsmouth, OH (heh...in those hilly areas of which you speak), and I'm working on an electoral support system that will be geared toward precinct-level workers. In effect, the primary end users will be those who have detailed knowledge (and need an information system that supports that level of knowledge) of their own particular voting district. There are higher-level aggregate functions, but the design is to have a precinct (or ward, in the case of a city) as the basic building block, since they don't cross larger political boundaries. So far, OSM has very few administrative units below the municipality level in the U.S. In Cincinnati, we’ve chosen to map neighborhood districts, as defined by the city, rather than wards. The districts are signposted and thus exist “on the ground”. You’ll probably find that only the political boundaries that meet this “on the ground” test will be allowed into OSM. (My understanding is that, in Ohio, a precinct could theoretically change shape, move from one congressional district to another, or be included/excluded from a township/city/etc election region, but it will be an all-or-none proposition--it is either in (can vote for a ballot question) or out (cannot vote for a ballot question). While there are exceptions to the higher-level voting districts (school districts, townships, cities, etc), the usage of the precinct/ward to build those higher-level districts would probably cover 95+% of the cases, with exceptions handled as I describe below.) The initial phase of the project is mostly informational, and maintaining the hierarchy of voting districts at all levels is probably enough. However, it's a short leap to including mapping information that is associated with those voting districts, and I want to plan ahead. As for specific sources of information, there are several planned so far: 1. Various official sources (county boards of election, local county engineer offices, and Secretary of State GIS information as it becomes available). These county departments have a very strong interest in knowing about, and having a public record of, the exact boundaries of the political subdivisions; it's how they determine who gets to vote on ballots and who pays for road maintenance. Another Cincinnati-area mapper recently attempted to get the GIS agency for Cincinnati and Hamilton County to open up some of their data to the public. After initially countering that they’re not a public agency (hah!), they told us to contact the individual agencies that contributed the data. Some GIS agencies are reluctant to allow their data to be used free of charge, because it undermines their fee-based business. So it may be an uphill battle. On the other hand, it sounds like the Cleveland-area mappers have gotten more cooperation from their local governments. 1. Precinct workers. They have a vested interested in knowing the precise boundaries of their areas of responsibility, and (as a matter of course) keep up to date on any moves within, among, or around the districts. 2. Local government bodies as necessary to catch exceptions or fill details. By supplying mass data (from #1) to knowledgeable locals (#2), the goal is to have a good source of district map data that is cross-checked and adjusted accordingly. The precinct level workers can also pull information from #3 as necessary and help feed it into the primary system. I’m of the (not at all universal) opinion that there’s room in OSM for administrative boundaries. One of the great things about OSM is that data sets that would otherwise remain as separate layers in most GIS databases get to “mingle” in OSM. So, for instance, you can explicitly say that some boundary is really intrinsically aligned with some road; it isn’t just some coincidence. However, this model leads to a significant amount of complexity. Once you import boundaries into OSM, there’s no telling what could happen to them: what started out as a simple polygon boundary (what we’d call an “area”) could easily wind up getting sliced and diced many times as other types of data get added or modified. As far as I know, there’s no good way to keep track of imported data for the purposes of synchronizing it with external data sets. That’s why the community is spending so much time manually updating roads that were imported from TIGER 2005 to reflect corrections made in TIGER 2012. Initially, I don't expect the maps to be very accurate. As you pointed out, there are exceptions at various levels, official information doesn't often jibe with local conditions, and the whole thing can leave large holes (like the townships you mentioned) that may be pretty important to someone

Re: [Talk-us] OpenStreetMap Isn't All That Open, Let's Change That and Drop Share-Alike
In system management, success is reaching the next bottle neck. My take away from Alex's concern is What is the next bottle neck for OSM to focus on? We can already see some of the great successes that MapBox has created from the ideas used to make a slippy map. I am so thankful for the whole idea of mbtiles. What a wonderful idea. I am so thankful for TileMill. I show people TillMill and how they can use it to get into GIS with a limited budget. These people can save a ton of cash and learn the same important concepts behind GIS without more expensive tools. However, I don't believe that the license is the next bottleneck. The next bottleneck to face is something more like creating the iD editor. I understand the Gift Culture. I've been to Burning Man a dozen times. OK, more or less: it might be eleven, it might be thirteen or fourteen. I have just barely lost count, so it is somewhere between 11 and 14 (starting in 1995, when there were only hundreds or low thousands there, not the tens of thousands I've seen in past years). Yet still: the Gift Culture is real. I've just described the gift culture of the open source/data world. My dentist doesn't get it. He thinks that I should make as much money as I can. Why are you giving this away? MapBox has gifted us some great things. Part of my gift back is to use a project or tell other people about these gifts. Corporations don't always get this idea. We can look to the recent example of Oracle Corporation and the Jenkins/Hudson controversy. In short, Oracle wanted to take complete control of the open source Hudson project. The rift was so bad that Jenkins was forked out of Hudson so that the project could continue. In a perfect world, I'd say Alex, let's change the license so that we can share things better with one another. However, I can't. Others don't understand that gift culture like you and I do. From all bad things that I've seen, I wouldn't license the data under any other license than ODbl. My experience with OSM for nearly five years has been largely my .org side of giving back as a volunteer. Sometimes it potentially strays into the .com realm, as I do run a software consultancy that charges by the hour. I haven't yet billed for hours yet for any OSM work, but I don't rule it out in the future. The Gift Culture and volunteering blurs a bit with my .org and .com worlds. I suspect there are others for whom this is true as well. ODbl isn't the only license that causes legal heartburn. There is a liquid boundary right now going on. Part of it is because of differences in Europe and USA, part of it is cultural, as in freedom (of Information Act at a federal level, Public Record Acts making for green pastures regarding data openness), part of it is corporate as in what the courts have said and are likely TO say redacted Greg addresses heady issues which are not germane to my responses, so I hereby duck out of this thread. Next problem with this ideal is that OSM cannot guarantee the integrity of the data once it has been placed into the OSM database. I started to map pedestrian crossings. I am OK that a crossing is not rendered at this time because I use a node for a crossing, a node for a traffic light, and another crossing node to help line up intersections. I also thought that it would be a great way to sell governments on the use of this kind-of data to maintain their annual restriping of crosswalks. A new mapper comes along and starts deleting the crossing data because cartographers have not rendered the data. The data were/are considered map clutter. I guess the reason is that if I cannot see the data rendered, then why do I have to plow through it in an editor? I will say that iD allows very entry-level editors to make significant contributions (witness the University of California Santa Cruz students of CMPE 80A who enter mobility/handicapped data like tactile_paving and crosswalks and bus_stop data). While the editor might largely contribute to them getting this wrong, it isn't hard (but it is a bit of work) to clean up these data. So, it's a step in the right direction for early users to use iD, especially if they make sloppy errors, but the data they enter are important and valuable. I agree with Greg's characterization that it is important to get contributions (even if slightly goofed) which can be cleaned up or harmonized later. See, getting data in is important, and getting data in right is important. Both don't need to happen at the same time (though it is good if they do), as cleanup can happen. In fact, it is valuable as it does, even as a two-step process. What Greg says about ugly tiles reminds me of osmaender (sp?) from circa 2011. That was an ugly renderer in many cases, but showed tagging at a ragged level. Maybe we can get to something like that again. Vector tiles are
