Angesprochen werden sollen v.a. If I understand things correctly (and assuming CC-by-SA holds water for data), they can charge for these derived data sets, but they would still have to be CC-by-SA, and so anyone who bought one could then redistribute without charge. Does that sound right? A note on this one for everyone not reading talk-de [1]: Ulf Möller, who has been a member of the OSMF Board and is part of the LWG, had been given a test device by Navigon in order to check for correct attribution. He was also asked by Navigon to distribute a text file [2] to the community which contains some basic information about how Navigon processes the data, links to download the packages for free (CC-BY-SA compliance AFAIK) and also instructions on how to install these files on a device. P.S. If they have de-duplicated these, as they claim, perhaps it is worth getting our hands on as a resource for cleaning up the database... Well, it would be nice and we could certainly ask for it, but with CC-BY-SA only the end product falls under the license and not the processed data in between. Are you sure? If we manage to extract the processed data, it'll be derived from either the end product or OSM or both, so it needs to be CC-By-SA too and there's no way around it. Yes, that's right. What I was trying to say is, that they only need to release the end product under CC-BY-SA and don't have to _provide_ any data sets from in between. Once we move on to ODbL however, this will change and we will get the much more interesting 'raw' data. Which we can't re-use in OSM however. Maybe you should explain why not, because from my understanding this data would be in an OSM compatible license because of the share-a-like aspect of ODbL [1]. Someone on IRC mentioned that the situation would be clearer under ODbL, too, but I think this is a false positive. Additionally with ODbL Navigon may take the position that they made a produced work. Yes, their POI packages maybe produced work and could be proprietary, but they would still have to release the processed OSM data from in between, which as I stated above might be more interesting to us. All that is only on how I understand the license and I'm not an expert on this. Viele Grüße, Jonas ___ Talk-at mailing list Talk-at@openstreetmap.org http://lists.openstreetmap.org/listinfo/talk-at

A super non-geek approved product would be a size-optimized PDF of the complete zone between border (including Jimaní and Pedernales) and the zone until Jacmel in the south, including all street names. I tried to produce that with osmarender, but it takes hours to calculate, seems it is not the right render tool. But the size ratio with osmarender is very good, with my tests with smaller *.osm files the ratio was about PDF size = OSM size / 8 Which means, that you can use as well low-RAM smartphones, older webpads etc. to display that map, without the need of connectivity. And any other device which can display PDF. The OCHA site has some PDF a bit like this, but not with every street name. And to give it a double oscar, having an optional coordinate grid would me great, or displaying the current mouse coordinate with JavaScript or something in the PDF viewer (Adobe includes JS, Flash AFAIK). I am no render guru, perhaps I used the wrong tool. The other thing is tracing of alternative streets to get into the city without traffic-jams. So, it would be good to have possible 4x4 roads, without using the two bridges, I don't know if that is feasible, it should be coordinated together with the helpers here, perhaps I could do something about it. Until now, the database had never been updated since the service was started in September 2009. Now, the geographic database used to render the maps is updated daily, providing maps with the latest contributions to OpenStreetMap. Each map contains the date at which it was generated. * Better city search engine. Thanks to Nominatim, we now provide a search engine that allows to find cities in a much more usable way: cities with the same name can be distinguished and the search works even when the city name is not completely correct. * Support for other languages. A few parts of the map rendering process is language-dependent and we now have the infrastructure to use language-dependent code. For the moment, we support English, French and Italian, but we are waiting for your contributions to support other languages. The website has also been translated to German and Italian. * Amenities in the index. In addition to the streets, we have added important amenities to the index: schools, town hall, post offices, places of worship, etc. Sorry for spamming, but it seems that MapOSMatic can do the job. Usually, while we apply the rule better crappy data than no data at all for anything surveyed by humans, we are more strict with imports, and we ask people to either do it right or leave it for someone who can. But of course this is an exceptional situation in that many people seem to be using the map data *now* rather than some time later when we had the time to polish it, so it was probably good to import the data, buggy as it is. We also now have the permission to use DigitalGlobe imagery: http://twitter.com/mikel/status/7764452473 Just confirmed: DigitalGlobe imagery can be used for OSM tracing. Just need source tag, and a note in wiki. Thx DG! Who can make the imagery available for tracing in JOSM and Potlatch? [Talk-at] Admin_level=6 Relations in Österre ich
A task that we, as a community, asked them to do for us because we couldn't implement a license change as a group of 20,000 (at the time) individual mappers. I'm glad that the LWG looked after our shared concerns so ably, by consulting with lawyers, the Creative Commons, the Open Knowledge Foundation and the community at large over the few years of the license discussion to date. I'm sorry, but for the last two years I can't remember asking for a license change at all. And there lays the point, we should all do what Ulf asks for. So we should do the YOU or the OSMF asks us to do? Ulf is not alone - I havent asked ... And a lot of people did not do so too. Even that i didnt ask for a license change - the new license is much to complex for my mind - CC-BY-SA hasnt shown any real problems up to now so i see the whole discussion as an artificial problem. I'm not sure if the CC-BY-SA license is really simpler than ODbL. Just look at this website here http://www.opendatacommons.org/licenses/odbl/summary/ and you'll see that the ODbL is as simple as CC-BY-SA. Plus it's now clear how to attribute correct and when your derived work also has to be ShareAlike and when not. Personally I'm also a PD fan and the only thing I was missing from the LWG was a survey to see if the majority of the OSM contributors wants to keep the attribution and Share alike component in a new license or if they would want completely free data under PD or CC0. All die Gebäudeumrisse, Parkplätze, Tennis-Plätze, Telephonzellen,...
