Thanks, the TB install program didn't fill the start
directory in. I now see spell errors but there are no
suggestions when I right click on a spell error..

Please note that I deleted the older SSCE dll file - as
someone here suggested - is that causing the problem? I do
have:

hunspell.dll
and
SSCE5532.dll

and have checked English (American) under Languages.

I checked my shortcut. It starts in the main TB directory (where
thebat.exe is).And spellchecker does not work.

It did work .. I selected a language BUT .. when a word is misspelled
and I right click on the word .. no suggestions are made as to how to
the spelling of the word. Is there something else I am missing?

You may be on the right track. In my case, when TB is started by Windows
during a new boot the 'Languages' menu item causes an AV. If I start TB from
my 'Quick launch' bar which is linked to the TB.exe file the spell checker
works properly.

CSAPI was already broken, at least here. Up to 4.0.0.12 in the language
submenu there were a separator and after that Greek. This is disappeared
in this version.

Giving that SCE doesn't have greek dictionary my only option is either to

No, you can't. Right-clicking only offers the Internet Options menu.
That particular launch icon is created by WinXP is is not an ordinary
shortcut.

I know how to handle regular shortcuts, but this in not one of them.
For now, I simply placed my own shortcut icon right under it with
correct start directory settings. Soon this will not be necessary as

Tell your boss that MAU says you can take the rest of the Sunday off :)

BTW, what will you be doing re user dictionaries? In previous versions
(i.e. 3.99.29) you could have and select different user dictionaries
for SSCE and CSAPI languages (engines). Now, if I have a CSAPI language
selected and I want to access user dictionaries, either I get an AV or
the SSCE ones only. Haven't found a way to access the CSAPI ones I used
for years.

And while we are at user dics, the New File and Add File buttons in
Edit Dictionaries dialog don't do anything.

It's working now.

Here is the problem -

In WinXP Pro, there is a selection in Internet Settings/Programs for
a default E-Mail Client. When set to The Bat!, it places a launch
icon in the left pane of the Start Menu (see attached).

When launched from this icon, no spell checking Languages.

Yes this was definitely the problem. It is working as expected now.
Although I now have no French option that I had before, so doing this
for those that were working may now break CSAPI.

Question: Has the spell checker always worked as you type a word or
only when the space bar is typed at the end of the word? I see it is
working all the time now.

True
I have XP Pro Internet apps email set to The Bat!
I am trying to find a way for the resulting email client entry in my
Start menu to launch The Bat! with a starting directory. No luck so
far.

In the meantime, I will start The Bat! from its own shortcut.

Confirmed - I had the Start In directory empty in the shortcut I use
to start TB, and when I set it to TB's directory, the languages
appeared. Nevertheless, this is a bug, because you can't rely on the
working directory being set when TB is started (eg. if I double-click
a .msg file on disk while TB isn't running, it'll be started with the
directory where I double-clicked the file as it's working dir).

Normally I would assume the same. However, I have learned that these
kinds of bugs can be very strange.

What made me bring this up is the fact that at least two of us who are
having this problem have our installations on a drive other than 'C',
and the fact that I have run into a very similar problem with a bug in
another program (TiVo Desktop), which would fail to find certain
application components if the product was installed on a drive other
than 'C' (even though registry entries seemed to point to the correct
directories).

I eventually gave up on trying to get TiVo Desktop to work on my 'D'
drive and just re-installed on 'C'. I don't know if they ever fixed
the bug.

I agree it seems like a long shot, but I wouldn't rule out anything
at this point. I would uninstall and reinstall The Bat! onto my 'C'
drive the test, but not sure of what a production it might be with
all data and setting files.

Yes I have some files in that directory, no mssp2 files, but I do
have mssp_fr.lex, also mssp3en.lex. I'm guessing here, but I think
these are probably dictionaries from different version of Office.

From seeing your messages before I know you have been using CSAPI for
along time and must have set up Spanish and English before. That
seems to be why you have spelling and we don't. My French setting is
completely a fluke as I don't speak it, but must have set it up by
accident.

I take it you do not a a larger list of choices thanb the ones you
list. If I go back to an older version I see so,mething like this:

Languages
  English (American)
  English (British
  French
  Spanish
  etc..
  ---
  French

Top entries seem to be for SSCE and bottom for CSAPI.

I tried editing the reistry to put the Speller key under RIT instead

I'm not sure why some people are getting the Speller KEY created
under "The Bat!" in the registry, and others are winding up under
"RIT"

Looks like your French dictionary is the only one you have configured
for CSAPI engine. It should be somewhere like in:

C:\Program files\Common files\Microsoft Shared\Proof\mssp2_es.lex"

mssp2_es.lex is the Spanish dictionary. The French should be something

oops.
It wasan't cropped, the TheBat! image viewer window was just too
small. I stretched the window taller and it was all there.

Hello Stefan,

ST> Those who cannot use SSCE dictionary just as they could before,

OK I went back to 3.99.9 and looked at the Spell check options there.
I have a list of about 15 languages to choose from. Below that I have
1 language, French. This is separated by a divider and is the only
language choice I see when I go to the latest beta.

If I then look under customizer at the Spell checking Menu I see two
choices under the Languages submenu SpellersSSP and SpellersCsIP. It
is the latter that apparently has French in it.

If I now look in the same place in the new beta I only see
mSpellLings where the two choices were before. I cannot find anywhere
the file the French dictionary resides in, but it does seem to work
when I select it in the new beta.

Can those that have spell checking working let us know what they see
in these palces?

You are right, it probably won't be used as much as before. Anyway, I
think that the way to go is what you suggest in your reply to Marek:
%LANGUAGE="EN;CZ;RU", etc. But I still think that %LANGUAGE="" should

Let me answer. My handles are the same as the names for the color
groups. A handle "wichtig" (meaning important) is stored and correctly

I think this may be a big part of the problem lately. Putting check
marks in things either don't work or don't stick and this makes
things very confusing. Some people are stuck with old settings and
cannot change or update them as new things come along.

It's not needed to specify the engine anymore. So, it will be like

Hello MAU,

That's correct. I still don't know what to do with it. I think it
becomes rudimentary because we can check for multiple languages at
once, so you just forget about your spell checker languages right
after selecting languages you normally use... I think we'll extend
the macro for setting multiple languages at once, but I don't expect
it will be as widely used as before...
