Spell checking failing (WAS: Re: 4.0.11)

2008-02-09 Thread MAU
Hello Ian,

Next it is the spell checker that needs to be fixed. At the moment it
flags errors in the signature of the message but not the text.

I've been thinking about your problem and can't understand it, it's
weird. Unless for some reason it is taking your text as 'quoted text'
which now is not checked for spelling. Which engine are you using? Have
you tried with a different one? I'm currently using CSAPI because I
think it has the best Spanish dictionary, but I tested SSCE and
Hunspell some days ago and never saw the problem you report.

This MSI Still shows the dialog with radion buttons without text. I
figured out that the first button means 'Show down TheBat'. That
fails however (a timeout) becauser TheBat stll taks ages to shutdown
on my machines.

I reported before that it seems to be writing msgs.dump files than,
even though I have the option 'save state between sessions' switched
off for all my virtual folders.

Can someone from the devteam _PLEASE_ explain me why this gets saved

I have been testing this beta and it seems to be very problematic and
unstable (things work initially and then don't)

Spelling -- does not work at all English(british) but does find uuu as an
error but not any other is accepted!

Password entry - repeated requests - if wrong password entered then in certain
circumstances it will not accept a correct password (found in 4.0.22)

Editor - Follow buttons initially worked as expected but now don't - indexes
totally screwed BUT only on certain folders (those used a lot) When tried on
new folders works correctly

Rogue Photos

2008-02-09 Thread Kyle Goodnight

Hi Batties,

Given the pcwise/thebat website is broken and no one is available (or knows)
how to fix the disfunction, is there an alternate way to get ones photo in the
gallery? I have sent my photo to the help address indicated in the create new
ID screen but got no response. Is this a dead end and only the photos that
are there now are the ones that can be displayed?? Seems a shame, it is a nice
feature to have. :(

Thread View of Email

2008-02-09 Thread Kyle Goodnight

Hi Batties,

I have been trying to figure out how to display my received email in a threaded
view(subject) in date/time generated order but so far no joy.

For example, I send a message to the bat group and receive several responses.
Now, my original message is pushed down and the responders reply is on top of
mine and so on. Is there a way to have my original message show as the top
level and all responders show up under my original post?

IMHO, it would make reading threaded messages much more logical and easier to
follow.

I guess you could send the picture to the list and we could add it

I wrote a software, where I used the same idea (before it was

In the light of your experience I decided to uninstall and reinstall back up to

No change from what I reported re Spelling language or option selections.

The dictionaries are present C:\program Files..

Glad it works for you, what is concerning is just that, a lack of consistency
so it indicates some corruption other than in the base files, maybe the
registery but I do not want to go there!

Thanks for reply anyway - hope the gurus at TB can resolve these issues as
these problems are more than just minor errors and affect usability and

How-To get the 3 spell checker engines to work - Part 1

2008-02-09 Thread MAU
Hello all,

Although Spell Checker is working for most of us, everyday I see that
one or more of the three engines (SSCE, CSAPI and Hunspell) is not
working for some.

The SSCE engine is the one that has always been included with TB and
the SSCE languages (dictionaries) in the Pro version and International
Pack.

TB has always (or at least since a long time ago) supported CSAPI spell
checker and languages from MS Office 97. My understanding is that only
Office 97 engine and dictionaries can be used, but I am not 100% sure
about this.

Now, the latest release (actually since 4.0.0.17 ALPHA) also supports
the Hunspell engines and dictionaries and the fact that you can select
and use two or more languages simultaneously, and from any of the three
engines (See All_DICs.png)

One important thing to understand and remember is that you do not
select 'dictionaries' for spell checking, you select 'languages'. And
that if there are dictionaries for that language from different
engines, they will all be used. In this case, the rule is: as soon as a
word is found correct by one of the dictionaries, it is considered
correct (even if another dictionary wouldn't consider it as correct).

Because of this is why I made a comparison of the Spanish and Britis
English dictionaries for the three engines.

You nay have seen my mid:[EMAIL PROTECTED] in
which I compared the Spanish dictionary of the three languages. That
obviously meant that I had the three engines running.

Currently I have four languages installed:

  America English (SSCE)
  British English (SSCE)
  Spanish (CSAPI)
  Italian (Hunspell)

As you can see in All_Dics.png I can even select and use them
simultaneously, and they do work.

But to prove that the three engines work and they all find misspelled
words and suggest corrections, I have also attached a screen shot of
each. You can see the language being used in the status bar and the
suggestions for a misspelled (in that language) word.

Mainly because of the limitation in the size of attachments that can be
sent to the list, and perhaps for the sake of clarity, I will follow up
with three more messages (parts 2 to 4) explaining my set-up for each
of the engines.

If this and following messages helps just one of you to get your spell
checking to work, I'll be happy :)

How-To get the 3 spell checker engines to work - Part 2 (SSCE)

2008-02-09 Thread MAU
Hello all,

I'll try to be brief and clear.

The SSCE engine (SSCE5532.dll) is installed with TB

I have TB installed in: C:\Program Files\The Bat!

And the dictionaries in: C:\Program Files\The Bat!\Speller

They MUST be in your ...\The Bat!\Speller

This Speller directory MUST include these three files:

  userdic.tlx
  accent.tlx
  correct.tlx

and then a pair of .clx and .tlx files for each language you want to
use.

I have these for American English:
  Ssceam2.clx
  Ssceam.tlx

and these for Britsh English:
  sscebr12.clx
  SSCEBR.tlx

And you can see my options (Spell Checker/Options) for SCCE in attached
PNG.

You will also see in this png that there is a tab for each of the
engines installed. If one is missing is because it is not installed (or
properly so) and TB doesn't see it.

I have seen some confusion about these dialog and tabs. The tabs are
NOT to select the engine to be used for spelling, you select languages.
The dialog and tabs are just to set the options for the engines
installed.

How-To get the 3 spell checker engines to work - Part 3 (CSAPI)

2008-02-09 Thread MAU
Hello all,

You do not need to install anything in any of TB directories. As far as
I know, if you have MS Office 97 installed (at least Word) the CSAPI
engine and dictionaries will be installed and TB will see them and
make them available to you.

I don't have MS Office 97 currently installed, I have Office XP. But I
kept a copy of the engine and dictionaries I wanted to use and
installed then manually.

I copied 'MSSP232.DLL' (the engine) and 'mssp2_es.lex' (the Spanish
dictionary) to this directory:

  C:\Program Files\Common Files\Microsoft Shared\Proof

and then I entered (imported) the registry keys that you can see in
'Spelling_XP_en_C.reg.txt' attached.

I am also including a screen grab of my options for CSAPI.

And that is all. Anyway, I am including the 'Setup instructions' that I
sent by PM to someone in this list and he got it working.

Intructions on how to setup MS Office 97 dictionaries and CSAPI engine
to be used by The Bat!

1.- Open 'Spelling_XP_en_C.reg' in Notepad.

2.- Carefully look at file patths in Registry entries. You may have to
change Drive letter and translate directory names like:

   Archivos de programa (Program Files)
   Archivos comunes (Common Files)

3.- Now place dictionaries and engine (dll) in the directories indicated
by registry entries.

4.- Save modified 'Spelling_XP_en_C.reg' and Import to your Resgistry.

5.- Your 'new' dictionaries should now appear as an option next time you
start TB.

How-To get the 3 spell checker engines to work - Part 4 (Hunspell)

2008-02-09 Thread MAU
Hello all,

For the Hunspell engine to be available and work, you must have the
'hunspell.dll' in your TB home or installation directory. In my case:

  C:\Program Files\The Bat!

You can download language dictionaries from:

http://wiki.services.openoffice.org/wiki/Dictionaries

There are at least two files, a .dic and a .aff) that must be installed
in (or copied to) this directory:

   ...\The Bat!\Dictionaries

In my case, for Italian I have:

 it_IT.dic
 it_IT.aff

in C:\Program Files\The Bat!\Dictionaries

As you can see in attached PNG, the Hunspell options are all disabled
and grayed out. AFAIK, RIT guy are still working on them.

And that's all. As I said in my first message, if this helps at least
one of you, I'll be happy :)

Re: Spell checking failing (WAS: Re: 4.0.11)

2008-02-09 Thread MAU
Hello Ian,

M I've been thinking about your problem and can't understand it, it's
M weird. Unless for some reason it is taking your text as 'quoted text'
M which now is not checked for spelling. Which engine are you using? Have
M you tried with a different one? I'm currently using CSAPI because I
M think it has the best Spanish dictionary, but I tested SSCE and
M Hunspell some days ago and never saw the problem you report.

Well, it gets wierder and weirder. Apart from the words in the
previous sentence, I have an obvious spelling error in my signature,
yet it is not picked up, but other words are as you can see in the
 screen capture.

Please see if the 4 messages I have sent about getting the spell
checker engines to work are of any help to pinpoint your problem. If
not, we'll continue talking.

Now something more. I have Office 2000 Premium and prior to the last
updates I was able to use the CSAPI spell checker. Now the only
option I have is the SSCE one.

I always thought and understood that CSAPI would only work with MS
Office 97 dictionaries. Are you sure it worked with your Office 2000?
Have you made any change to your Office 2000?

 Hunspell is all greyed out.

I assume you mean the Options, correct? If so, they aren't working yet,
but the engine is.

At the moment it is basically like having no spell checker available
as nothing in the message body is picked up, and what is picked up is
 in the signature.

That is what I find weird, that nothing is picked up in the body and
yes in the signature. I can't think of what's happening.

Maybe SSCE should be canned until it can be made to work with The
 Bat!.

SCCE has always worked with TB and is working fine now.

At the moment the spell checking issue is a touch embarrassing.
Hardly something to impress a potential customer with.

As I say in the first of my 4 messages, it is working for most people.

2008-02-09 Thread MAU
Hello Ian,

M I've been thinking about your problem and can't understand it, it's
M weird.

 Now here's something more.

If a word has an uppercase letters that is in any place other than the
first character position, then at the moment the word is flagged as an
error. For example, ALuminium is marked as an error as is aLuminium
but Aliminium is not. Interestingly if the word is all uppercase it
is not considered an error so GB or ALUMINIUM or even ALOMIMIM are
all considered OK (as is OK :-)).

Now I can see why the words in my signature are flagged as errors.
They all have an uppercase character other than in the first
character position and they also contain at least one lowercase
character AFFTER at least one uppercase character.

 How weird is that!

Please make sure which engines you have installed and which languages
for each. My advise would be to not have the same language installed
for more than one engine.

Do you perhaps say that because you no longer see the bar line that

ones photo in the gallery? I have sent my photo to the help address
indicated in the create new ID screen but got no response. Is this
a dead end and only the photos that are there now are the ones that
can be displayed?? Seems a shame, it is a nice feature to have. :(

HMdB I did not experience any problem(s) loggin to:
HMdB http://www.pcwize.com/thebat/

HMdB some minutes ago...

Logging in to the site is not the problem, I can do that. The problem is you
cannot create a new account. I
have tried several times. I have keyed in my account info, clicked submit and
it goes into lala land and
never returns. Then you can try logging in to the account with the info just
submitted and am told account
does not exist. Log back on the the site and try to create the same logon data
you just used and you do get a message that the
user Id is already in use. So, possibility the new account info is getting
recorded but not updated properly
so that a photo can be uploaded. Something is rotten somewhere. :-/

I agree, This feature should be supported and maintained by RIT so that it will
work properly. It is a nice
feature.

Re: How-To get the 3 spell checker engines to work - Part 4 (Hunspell)

2008-02-09 Thread Graham
Hello MAU,

And that's all. As I said in my first message, if this helps at least
one of you, I'll be happy :)

Thank you for describing what is required to get spelling to work.

Despite all your efforts I cannot get it to work.

In line with your advice I can confirm I have all the files you mention for
SSCE and english (BR) selected
Following your instructions I added Hunspell (dll was already there but added
other files)
I use MS Word 2007 and so no CSAPI - maybe this is the problem?

OK, all appears correctly set up but it refuses to work

frunt lok (these have no effect as being mis-spelled)
99ggg 444ggg (these are underlined in red but only for numeric followed by
alpha)

Spell cjhecking is a must for me and I am deserate for a solution, I should add
that untill V4 (all versions) it did work

Anymore ideas, help!

Thanks

 Graham

one user reported this too, I have not many informations from him to

BTW are You storing attachments separately in ATTACH or in msgbases?

The attachments are in a separate folder:

E:\My Documents\The Bat\Attachments

And I am using plain text (MicroEd).

What editor are you using? I can't reproduce it here

Plain text (MicroEd).

I also keep the attachments in a separate subfolder within the overall
mail folder. Is that (just as Eudora used) better, or is it better to
keep the attachments in the mail itself?

They MUST be in your ...\The Bat!\Speller
This Speller directory MUST include these three files:

 and these for Britsh English:

   SSCEBR.tlx

Thank you for the instructions. It's just what I was looking for! I
downloaded the International Pack and extracted the British English

I wonder if a solution has been posted/found to use the MS Proofing Tools

JF If the Options are greyed out, this does not mean that
JF Hunspell is not working - it only says that the Options are
JF not availiable (because they are still work in progress).

Actually, HunSpell does not allow to set any option - it just works
:-) So, please don't expect much on this matter.

is not available in the options.

I have both Office 2003 and Office 2007 installed (as well as older

because of the multiple versions?
