I am in the Edit Mail Message window, which I assume is what you are
talking about. All my spell checker options are grayed out. I don't
even see a place anywhere where I could switch off automatic spell
checking if I wanted to. i don't have the international pack

I keep a protected dummy account for archiving. I just created a new

discovered that each time I used the up arrow to jump one it asked for

I have no spell checker here. teh mistaks i mak don't dray any notice
at all. running micro ed (always have)

Now, let me change that a little. You may recall that I had a problem
because my whole spell checker pull down was grayed out. It is not
grayed out. I had no wavy lines, then I looked, saw that I could
again choose a language. I chose one, and then suddenly every word
was marked mispelled.

I was able to turn off spell checking, then the wavy lines went away.
But if I run f4, it suggests changes for each word until I stop.,

It looks to me like what is happening is that new tools are replacing
old tools, like new editors, etc. Those things have to be in place
before beta development can begin. I guess maybe if we knew what they
wrere going to break next, it would help, but I think the new
foundation or superstructure or whatever has to be in place, and the
alphas have to evolve into something stable that can be developed

spell checking

2008-02-16 Thread Dwight A Corrin

I thought I was sick of reading about the spell checker. But since it was not noticing misspelled words on an as you type basis, I ran the check entire message which worked fine, until I tried to add a word to the dictionary.

The word did get added. I was surprised to see how many dictionaries I have. I don't know if this is abnormal.

well, I went back to my xp machine, and I guess I don't have it
selected. I've never encountered windows software before where a
checkmark could mean that something was NOT selected.
It's kind of counterintuitive to me to have a check there
when it isn't checked.

On my vista machine, on the other hand it's worse than ever.

In I reported that when I
tried to add a word to the dictionary I got an error message, which
you can see in that message. Tonight, I have tried to add a word the
the dictionary three times. The first time, as soon as I right clicked
on the word, the screen lightened, then went back to normal, and I got
the TB! splash screen. When it had restarted, I tried again, and got a
box from Vista telling me the program had stopped responding.

After reboot, I tried again, and when then came back to finish typing
this message when the splash screen reappeared. (I like the new
splash screen by the way, but don't want to see it that often)

It is only clear if you look at such an unusual (at least to me and
the way I've used windows for 20+ years) place. Determined to find it
to see what you are talking about it only took me about a minute.
I've never looked down there even in the new viewer to see about
justification issues either, because there are a logically placed set
of choices under the subject line. The only reason I've ever used the
status bar to make changes in TB! is if I want to send HTML (rare) or
change accounts (also rare now that I use one IMAP account which
collects all my POP mail for me).

But I will grant you that it is the only place to be able to simply
tell about speller settings with the silly checkmark in the pull-down.

That is what they said about an HTML viewer, an HTML editor, etc. Of
course some of the reason that a minority of users are IMAP users is
because of foot dragging. Certainly the minority need the bloat
related to dealing with PGP.

There may be good reasons/excuses, but this isn't one of them.

If it never finished, maybe you didn't wait long enough for the
results? I think it is bad design that it starts telling us that no
messages are found while the search is not yet complete. If one is
impatient, as I often am, one may give up too soon. A progress bar or

Attached shows when I tried to use estrangelo edessa in this html window.

OK, I think I figured out why it does not quote with the blue line for me. I have been using a macro called Quotes2 that reformats the text in the reply somehow (I forget what it does). If I turn that off and just use the quote macro I get this.

Above is cut and paste.

Wondering whether some files can be safely deleted

2008-07-03 Thread Dwight A Corrin
Had some index issues, which took me to the data files for my IMAP
account. There I found several hundred temporary files, which I
deleted.

My question is about files with the extenison of '.bin'

There are thirty of them, named part0026.bin to part0030.bin
All but the last two were created together in January. There is one
from April, and one from mid-afternoon today.

What do these files do, and do I need them all?

That is not the change that I was expecting. Now, they just disappear.
I was expecting a return to the situation which I think existed
earlier, where all the folders which appeared when that tab was chosen
continued to be displayed as long as one was working in that tab, so
one could backtrack to the last folder they were in and still stay in

Right now, the parked message is not being moved, as I understand what
you are telling us.

When one parks a message, the reason presumably is to keep it from
being moved or deleted. When one has a filter wihich moves a message,
presumably it is because one wants to have the content of the message
put in the other place.

Since the result of the user's actions in wanting the message in two
places is to have the message in two places, ti seems that copying the
message is the right solution.

The only alternative to copying the parked message would be to stop
and ask whether to move the message. I don't think that is what one
would want either.

I also get lots of HTML newsletters, but never seen one mangled, let
along horribly mangled. If I want to look at any of the stuff behind
any of the little red 'x's it's very simple to merely double-click the
message.html icon, and I can always follow one of the links. It works
great. We, unfortunately, use Outlook 2003 here at the office, and
have it restricted so that it doesn't download all the crap in all the
spam which shows up, as a security move. So the only safe way to use
software which does the unnecessary is to disable that function.

TB! disappearing soon after opening

2005-03-04 Thread Dwight A Corrin
I have reported the problem I have on my home desktop a number of
times. That problem is that TB won't stay open long enough to complete
checking mail, before it just disappears. This behavior continues thru
3.0.9.3

I took to heart Stefan's recent advice

> How do you start TB! ? If you are using a shortcut, make sure the
> start folder is set to the folder with TheBat.EXE

I learned that the path was enclosed in double quotes, and that
removing same made no difference.

I would like to put a stop to mail checking on opening, to see if that
would make a difference, and at least give me a chance to poke around
in settings and stuff. Is there a way to change accounts so that they
do not check mail when you cannot get the program to run long enough
to make the changes there?

still can't run TB on my desktop

2005-04-19 Thread Dwight A Corrin
I have been unable to get TB! to run on my desktop at home for some
months now. I have posted about this a few times and gotten no
answers.

Now, I keep hoping something will change in one of the betas and it
will work, but no luck. No, I am not running any virus checkers. I
know that there was an instruction about being sure to uncheck some
boxes recently, but I can't stay open long enough to look at anything.
Connection Centre runs a brief time, then things just vanish.

I will ask again if there is a way to change settings without having
TB! running which would stop the mail checking, to see if it would
stay open if that wasn't going on?

The lack of useful replies there drove me to pre-betas, and enquiring
here. At least here, there is some chance someone it trying to fix
something. No one, I assume is making repairs to 3.0.1.33, and no one
has ever addressed my question about whether start up settings can be
changed when one is not running, so one can experiment about trying to
start up.

I presuppose it may be a bug because it has been reported by a number
of users, including myself. Of course, it may well be something else
in my configuration. That is why I keep asking if there is a way to
change any of my configuration when the program is not running since
it will not run in its current configuration.

It is a problem which continues to occur with the current beta. It is
apparently is less than not likely that I will not get any answers
either place, since the only person posting just keeps telling me not
to ask here, and since about three rounds of asking on TBUDL and
similar enquiries by others have not drawn any answers either.

Tonight I tried experimenting with renaming directories. Actually, I
succeeded with the first one I tried.

Although in preferences/options /antispam, no plugins are identified,
there is a folder called BAYESIT in the TB directory. When I gave it a
new name, the problem went away. It is working fine, although this has
been a long term problem. I found threads I started here on the topic
on 21 October 2004, 4 November, 2004, 21 March 2005, and this one. I
didn't look for the times when I sent messages confirming I too had
the problem when other reported it.

The date of the files in the BAYESIT directory is 10/12/04 (OCT 12,
not DECEMBER 10) The same directory with the same files is present in
my set up here at the office, and it runs fine. Go figure.
