Hey Dierk, My point was, and I think is still valid for others on this list, that The Bat! shouldn't be assessed on the weight of its BETA releases. I was in no way having a dig at Becky, I was merely pointing out that I see testing Beta software almost as a privilege that an individual can either take or leave, bug slagging The Bat! based on its beta code is unfair. Re: Bye Bye The Bat.... Say Hi to Becky!
Hello Thomas, Mitteilung vom Freitag, 31. August 2001, 06:03:39: ... TF Thanks for your crossposting without sensible contents, and for your TF lack of interest to discuss (and BTW this is a mailing list, not a TF newsgroup). Good riddance. Sorry, I disagree that there is no sensible content in Alexander's mail. He decided to skip to another mailer due to some features he prefers in Becky. So, it could be interesting to the developers what makes users feel uncomfortable with TB and enhance their product. After all they can discard these ideas or see that they already knew that but nevertheless they shouldn't ignore users wishes. Concretely there are two points Alexander thinks Becky is superior to TB: 1. Filters 2. Reminders I myself don't think that TB's filters are poor but who knows, maybe we can learn from Becky (or other mailers). And as to reminders they are on the TB's wishlist for a long, long time ... and I miss them a lot! (Maybe, me too will abandon TB very soon for the lack of reminders if I can't reasonably emulate them with a script and a scheduler. I hope I have not to change for I appreciate TB a lot). And after a quick look into Becky I like the idea to edit the mail on the fly in an extern editor. After all, I think that there was sense in Alexander's mail and I wish the developers read carefully how their customers feel! -- Regards, Bernhard Kohl -- __ Archives : http://tbudl.thebat.dutaint.com Moderators : mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] TBTech List: mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] Unsubscribe: mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED]

Re[3]: Bye Bye The Bat.... Say Hi to Becky!
Hello Andrew, I've always seen myself as a bit of a champion for TB! I've used it for about 3 years and it's always done the job for me. I've used it to create solutions in business as well as personal environs. But that said it's generally wise not to ignore other options so after this mail I went and got becky to see what he's fussing about. I can't really see what's so special about it. Perhaps it uses less memory and perhaps it's faster at searching mail boxes (couldn't really check either). But that if true comes at the price of less power and flexibility. [It's got a nice default mail arrival noise (how can we get that? note for Ritlabs we need several sounds for mail arrival - different filters - anyone got some good ones perhaps that's another mail.) ] Becky struck me as a rather simple mail client and i guess if that's what you need fine, for me though TB! just has so much more to offer. If I need to use it again I have to quit TB! and run it again. Problem is known and reproducible. But it happens only with CSAPI from Office 97. With Office2000 works correctly. The only one of the three bugs you mention I am aware of is that some users complained that suddenly TB stopped checking mail periodically. Even though it had worked earlier. Very strange. I think so. However, we could not gather enough evidence to guess what the reason might be. I am sure Rit would fix immediately if they had an angle. Can you put your finger on it? What I have to do? Is not enough to write on this mailing list? MK And it will work under W98? And will be possible to switch MK beetwen users on each Windows account? How can I get it MK working? Could you send me the solution? The primary method, and one I use here, is to have separate users (no groups), each of whom has their own account and log in to TB. Dean has just written to me off-list pointing out how you can create a shortcut to launch TB for a specific user and to focus their account requiring only their own password to open it. The secondary (and more secure) method is to install a copy (and it can be the same copy to the same folder taking no extra space on disk) under each windows user account. This will add a registry entry for each user. Each one can then be configured to have its mail-base in the user's home directory instead of in the default location. Voila! Separate users, separate mail-bases - secure. This setup is more difficult to maintain though, but everything has a price. -BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE- Hash: SHA1 Hello The Bat! developers TBUDL, i'm cc'ing this to tbudl as it seems quite relevant to the thread 'bye bye bat' currently at hand; I'm using The Bat! Version 1.53o Serial Number 03240C1C under Windows NT 4.0 Build 1381 Service Pack 6 and would like to report a bug The bug description: sometimes, quite at random, thebat! seems to forget a few settings i have made in 'account properties'. under transport: '8 bits char treatment' resets itself to 'base64'; under mail management: 'leave mail on server' doesn't change, however 'keep mail on server for x days' resets to off, and 'delete messages when removed from trash' resets to off as well; under options': 'check mailbox at startup' resets to off, 'periodical check' resets to off, 'mark message as read after displaying for x sec' resets to off, 'enable S/MIME' sets itself to on, and 'sign messages' resets to off. this has happened quite a few times now (about once every few days on avereage). it is quite annoying, especially the resetting of '8 bits char treated as bas64' setting, because emails with an 8 bit char in it appear as unreadable garbage (well, not unreadable, but you'll catch my drift) to my recipients. i have two accounts, and the settings reset at the same time for both accounts. i'm sorry that i can't offer any more details. Steps to reproduce the bug: that would be difficult to list since it happens randomly. Re[6]: SMTP server - setting up
Hello Raj, ok to summarise :) you use use the ADR (www.mailutilities.com) to send mail. Which would solve my problem. I have since found a free service which would do this for me too (thanks to this thread). But it might be worth using a paid for service if the smtp server the mail appears to be from is my domain (which could be anything if you see what I mean). So as you'll see below my domain is andema.co.uk so ideally I'd like the smtp server to appear to be smtp.andema.co.uk. If you ctrl+shift+k your mail you'll see the header and should see if your domain is listed as the smtp server in the header. thanks for try anyway :) -- Best regards, ::Andrew::mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] http://at.omic.co.uk -- __ Archives : http://tbudl.thebat.dutaint.com Moderators : mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] TBTech List: mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] Unsubscribe: mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED]

Re[2]: Some improvements
Perhaps this has already been mentioned -- maybe it's already in there and I haven't seen it -- but I would LOVE a backup scheduler. - Dear Mike, A backup scheduler inside the program would be a great addition, but it's a good bet that most wise users can't afford waiting for that... (definition of a wise user: one who has suffered some really serious data loss. We know, it happened to our company...) The very best $30 we have spent on software recently was in downloading and registering a gem of a program called Second Copy (http://www.SecondCopy.com/). We back up all important programs and data, including the full Bat folder (what the heck...) every day to CDRW and to a second hard drive. Like The Bat, Second Copy is clearly written by brilliant programmers. Unlike the Bat, their program is very logical to use and their Customer Service is extremely responsive (don't mean to offend anyone here, just a simple observation after a few months of use and reading posts.) Your description above looks quite unfamiliar to me, particularly the MainSet and Actions part. When I go to Account -- Sorting Office/Filters I am presented with the choice to filter mails from any folder to any other folder in any account. I'll have to set at least one condition to be fulfilled for the filter to work. In your case (all messages) the following is one possibility: Strings: @ Location: Kludges Presence: yes This should do the job. QT with %ATTACHMENT macro
-BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE- Hash: SHA1 Hello TBUDL Members! I do have a QT wich uses macros to insert my vCard and three files. Since some e-mail clients (and there users) are obviously too stupid to grasp the concept of more than one attached file, I want to include in the body a list of attachments. I just put in the %ATTACHMENTS macro, opened a new message, put in the QT's handle and the message was put together. Only problem, where the list of files should have been, TB! inserted none (without quotes). I then tried to put in the macro in the editor, which didn't do anything. Address book
Friday, August 31, 2001 9:08 PM GMT -0800 Hello Bat Users, Here is one that I have never seen on the list. I was looking around in The Bat's directories and opened thebat.abd address book file in a text editor just to see what it looked like. Still in this file are names and addresses that I deleted months ago. They don't show up when I open the address book but they *are* in the thebat.abd file. Had anyone else noticed this before? How would one purge this file of these deleted items without messing up the address book? Thanks, and hello everybody. I haven't posted in quite some time but have over 6000 messages in my Batlist folder. -- Wayne [EMAIL PROTECTED] Using The Bat! 1.53d Under Windows 98se 4.10 -- __ Archives : http://tbudl.thebat.dutaint.com Moderators : mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] TBTech List: mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] Unsubscribe: mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED]
