free decent virus checker that works with TB?

2002-02-10 Thread Rick Reumann

Is there a pretty good virus checker that will work with the Bat that
will only operate by checking attachments? If a free is available that
would be great. Maybe I'm just gambling with time, but since I really
only open attachments that I know for a fact I am supposed to receive
(plus I use The Bat:), I've remained clean so far.
My biggest gripe with the virus scanners is they always seem to hog up
major resources and end up conflicting with something. (I actually
disable mine at work).
If I had a virus checker that would only kick into action when it saw
an attachment, and worked with well with the Bat, I'd be interested.
Thanks

This Program isn't free... it's not expensive either... is probably the
best I've run into and is remarkably easy on System Resources:

 Following the directions located here
 http://www.guenther-eisele.de/bat/fprot_e.htm, it
might be possible to have The Bat! launch Norton
to scan the directory for viruses. Does Norton have a
command line to scan a directory? If not, map a
 directory to a drive letter.

One quick fix way is to have a QT which has the same contents as the template in
the original folder.

Then when you reply to the mail from the second account type the handle of the
QT and press Ctrl+Space Bar.

ps :ensure that the QT is shared with other accounts

Thanks Raj for the reference and your examples are pretty good on
that page. However, I don't really see any example doing what I
would like. Say for example I filter(move) a message from one inbox
into the inbox of another account. I would like a template set up
so when I reply to this message it will send out from the ORIGINAL
inbox it was sent to, not from the inbox that the mail was filtered
to. I thought a QT something like:
   %FROM="%OTo"
   %ACCOUNT="%OTo"
   might work, but it doesn't.

Is the scope of this question really that big? I apologize for not
studying the template features in more detail. I do have some
templates set up. I wish this wasn't that big of a deal because
it's a bit frustrating. I like how many programs will collect all
your mail into one box but when you reply to the messages it knows
what account it was set to. I'm trying to achieve the same
   functionality using The Bat!.

A shame. I see that Shift-JIS character set support has been added
to the beta, but this was almost a waste of time as far as I can
tell, because almost no Japanese use this character set anymore.
Everything, or certainly almost everything, these days, is
ISO-2022-JP. Selecting Shift-JIS from the character set menu allows
me to read zilch. Nada. Zero.

AS> So, in principle, there's no difficulty integrating it into TB.

AS> I shall email them privately about this.

I hope you are successful. I may send a letter myself. Microsoft is
taking this ball and running with it, and the end result is that I
may soon be using Outlook.

I run English Windows 2000, with an English Office XP on board. When
I get Japanese e-mail and I open it in Outlook, I have to do . . .
nothing . . . to view it properly. It simply appears as perfectly
formatted Japanese text in the viewer. So, it's not an operating
system limitation, given that you have the right font packages
installed. It's a developer limitation, and one I think that any
serious e-mail client with pretensions to internationalism would have
to have this capability. Certainly when a free client has it, a
non-free client is going to have to compete, or ultimately lose.
Maybe the folks at Rit simply don't have a very good idea of how much
Japanese and Chinese e-mail is exchanged between English and other
non-DBCS platforms. I can assure them the number is huge, and growing
by leaps and bounds daily. Microsoft is obviously on to this, and
may make inroads into Rit's market that may prove hard for Rit to win
back after the fact.

Best,

Yuki

I have a simmilar setup as Jernej Simoncic. And have added a few filters to
ensure that mails from the same id is filtered out also. Having identified the
spam by a set of wordsthe same filter also adds the address of the sender to
a address group which I have named as Spam Addresses.

Then above this this filter I have created a filter which checks if the sender
is listed in the address book (Spam) and if so move it straight to the Spam
folder. This helps when the spammer uses words which are not caught by other
filters.

Specify the domain names in the 'sender' and presence 'yes'

You could that by specifying the words you are looking for in any of the fields
like 'sender', 'recipient', 'subject', 'text' (body) or 'kludges'(headers). But
a word of advisemove the messages to a different folders and check out the
results for some time...before you finally move the messages to trash folder
directly.

You mean GnuPG? Like I use? To use it, just ensure that the GnuPG path
is in the system PATH environment variable then from "Tools | OpenPGP
| Choose OpenPGP version" select 'Gnu Privacy Guard'. Then OpenPGP
operations will be performed using GnuPG.

Templates can be specified at

Account
Folder
Address Book (Group)
Address Book (Each address)

levels. The order of usage is the reverse of what I have stated above. There is
also an option to use Quick Templates.

I feel the scope of your question is too big to address in an e-mail and would

Hello Luc,

I use both - for various reasons.

About once a month (or as often as I remember to do so), I use Mailbag
Assistant to archive mail I want to save for some reason. Then I can
clean up the folders in TB!. While TB! can handle very large message
databases, I prefer to keep it relatively clutter free for my daily
emailing requirements.

I also like the several criteria I can use at once to search for
messages via Mailbag - be it in archived messages or in current
databases.

Mailbag assistant can also be used with other programs I use - like my
news reader (Agent). I can also use it to search for old messages in
email databases from clients I no longer use daily, but are still
installed (Pocomail/Calypso/Pegasus, etc.).

It is not possible to do this in The Bat. The editor in The Bat always
shows the e-mail exactly the same way as it will be sent, which is
good for most people. Unfortunately this means that you'll either have

First and second filters (SpamKiller, SpamKiller2) are for 'general'
SPAM (second filter will catch all e-mails with more than 3 spaces in
subject; so far I only got SPAM e-mails with such subjects).

Third filter (IdiotDeleter) is for individuals I don't like.

Copy these filters, paste them into Notepad (or similar text editor),
do a search-and-replace on "Jernej Simončič", change it to your
account name. Also change the folder name \SPAM to the folder you
wish to filter to (I don't delete these messages, just in case there
was a false positive - there wasn't any so far). After you change
those things, copy the text again (don't change anything else), go to
 Account->Sorting Office->Incoming mail and press Ctrl+V

I guess you're using 1.53, so you don't have 'Rich Text Viewer', which
is able to to exactly the thing you'Re requesting.
If you'll wait for next stable release you'll see fulfilled your wish
:-)

Meanwhile you can shrink the size of window to a width fitting your
needs, change one mail back for forth and you'll see the re-wrapping
effect fro this point. In other words: the 'old' (plain text) viewer
does only rewrap on 'refresh' of it'S content, and this little
workaround (mail changing forth and back) solves this problem until
the next release.

DP> Is this clear or not?

I think it was. :-)

HTH Pit

P.S.: It would be better not to start a new topic by replying to an
existing message as your mail is sorted _in thread_ because of
reference headers, so it might be a lot of people not reading your
message only because they are not following the thread you choose as
originator for your mail (Subject: Future Development).
A better solution is to create a completely new message as this way
no reference headers are created and threading by references, which is
one of the most important features of The Bat! to me, will not sort
your mail deeply in another discussion :-)

You can create a filter by going straight to the sorting office:
 Account -> Sorting Office/filters

SJ> Also, are there ways to block mail from specific domains?

Sure, create an inbound filter:
Set strings: domain, location: Sender, Presence: Yes
Actions tab: Check Delete the message

In case you want to use the filter for more domains, add rules on the
altenatives tab.

SJ> Can I scan a subject line for words like "sex" and

String: sex
Location: subject
Presence: yes

Can't be done with TB. The editor is wysiwyg, there's no reformatting
after the editing. The only way to achieve something like that is set
the wrapping on a short length, that'll make your messages appear with
short lines on the recipient's pc too.

Testing Eval - Prev/Ed windows

2002-02-10 Thread Debbie Pomerance

Hi -

I'm evaluating The Bat - and I have a question about the editor window. In
other E-mail clients when I resize the window horizontally - back and forth
- the lines of text are rearranged to fit the size of the window. I cannot
find a way to do this in The Bat. When I resize down - the lines appear
truncated - I have to scroll right to see the rest of the line.

I use a fairly large font due to low vision plus a screen magnification
package - and I normally keep my editor preview windows narrow so that I
don't have to keep moving the cursor back and forth to read the entire
width of the screen. <-- I hope I explained this in a coherent fashion. If
I can't get the lines to automatically resize then I can't do this.

Is this clear or not?

Thanks

Debbie

FYI, the current beta has Shift-JIS encoding in the XLAT manager
(Options -> XLAT tables). Maybe it's worth a look (note: I thought in
Shift-JIS it is possible that one character is encoded as a multibyte
sequence, it's not possible in an XLAT table, or is it?)

But you probably want full Shift-JIS + ISO-2022-JP + UTF-8 support. (I
do, too)

Delete message in thread...

2002-02-10 Thread Jonathan Wayne

Why does deleting a message in a thread take one to the next thread, not the
next message in the same thread? This happens when in the viewer panel mode and
when viewing a message and hitting the "delete message and move down" icon. The
only difference is that when the viewer panel is open, the next message in the
thread will be selected if the thread is expanded.

If I am reading a message in a thread and delete it, I DON'T want to go the next
thread! It certainly makes thread management very difficult.

I didn't see this addressed in the archives either.

I thought of that possibility about 2 minutes after I wrote the

Oh well, another feature request (it seems that a filter triggered
_before_ the email was sent - or not - would be extremely useful in
certain circumstances, and this is one).

Final v2 is in development. The process is - and this is the deep
thought of TB!beta - to first develop Functions that work. No need to
explain how users would react when a SW-Version is released with a lot
of bugs. So joining the TB!beta gives to everyone the chance to give
in his thought and participate in testing so as to help in bringing
out a stable v2.

BTW - beta39 is so good that you could make use of it as your v1.53o
with the difference that it has added functions and features.

Only your participation in the TB!beta list can answer this.

there is a constant development process and the people at RITLABS work
very hard to a final v2.

No way Yuki san. Don't ever think of it. TB! is much more used on this

If no one in this list can answer you this you should contact RITLabs
directly. Stefen and Maxim are very open an communicative and you
would for sure get the most competent answer.

But a fan is also a person who does not expect that *his* function is
available immediately but works toward his goal. You have all
opportunities by joining the different ML and Communicating with the
developers to reach your aim.
And TB! is very International (read my words above)!

I hope that full DBCS - Unicode support is somewhere close to the
*top* of the priority list for The Bat! developers. Micro$oft has been
way ahead on this for many years and the lack of such support is about
the only thing that could send me back to the otherwise thoroughly
inferior Outlook Express. For such an international program as The

must.

Not if you're not having problems with 1.53d.

Not quite - it's just not the official release is all.

Because it's not a beta but a late-tweaked release.

Correct.

Although this has not appeared, there is better support for Japanese,
Thai and Chinese in the new version. DBCS will probably now be a 2.1
feature.

Supported in the pre v1 alphas and betas (what a cosmopolitan and

1.54 may well be introduced as v2 since, as I said at the top, it
already has 80% of the slated v2 functionality.

Very advanced in what context? What I am asking about actually, I
guess, is the often referred to but somewhat phantom version 2. And
my comment above is really about release versions, not betas. There
hasn't been a new release version, highlighted on the TB home page,
since June 19 of last year. I'm not really interested in running a
beta, although a beta being developed with DBCS support would
probably change my mind very quickly. Version 2, I heard, a long
time ago, was supposed to be headed in the direction of DBCS support.
I'd like to hear from someone who knows if this is still the case, or
even if there is currently development being done on version 2 --
serious development, of course. I wouldn't be surprised if it's
dying. E-mail clients are not fantastic money makers in the first
place. I'd just like to know the current story.

EC> If you want to have a TB!Japanese you better get in touch with
EC> Ritlabs directly.

I am not interested in a TB! Japanese. Not in the slightest. What I
am interested in is a TB! English that can read Japanese e-mail, and
that will let me input Japanese directly into its message editor. I
hate to say this . . . but Microsoft is starting to get way ahead of
the game here, with their Global Input Method Editor (IME). This
allows almost seamless input of Japanese, Chinese, or Korean into
English Office documents, or into English Web documents. Of course,
it works just fine with Outlook, as well.

EC> No need to look for alternative - there are non ;-)

It's nice to be a fan, Eddie. I'm a fan, too, but I'm not a fan
beyond all reason. I need to be even more international than TB! is
at the moment. And sadly, there *are* alternatives. They may not be
as great as TB! in some respects, but I need to be able to have
Japanese e-mail functionality on an English system. If TB! can't
give that to me, and fairly soon, for whatever reason, it's probably
time for me to move on, even if that alternative is Outlook.

I would GLADLY pay a bit extra for this functionality, mind you, even
with MS is trying to shove Outlook down my throat for basically
nothing, since it's really just a no-cost add-on to Office.

Yuki ^_^

Part of the problem is that TB!'s numbering is too modest - 1.54 is a
big upgrade to 1.53.

But, at the moment,

+ 1.54 definitely doesn't include double-byte encoding or Unicode
support;

+ 2.00 has had both of these hinted at, as well as a new filtering
system, new editor with HTML writing as well as reading, new user
interface, news reading plugin, full IMAP4 folder handling, support
for global peace and understanding (only joking about the last one ;)

What I don't know is what happens when 1.54 is released; does 2.00
beta 1 instantly appear with all these new features ready for
(doubtless protracted) testing?

As far as I can see the IME can work with third-party applications:

http://www.eu.microsoft.com/windows/ie/downloads/recommended/ime/default.asp

So, in principle, there's no difficulty integrating it into TB. The
problem is making the developers see this :(

I shall email them privately about this.

Hello Listar,

Greetings List:

I subscribe to the 'digest' format,so I hope this gets posted
properly.

When I have several new e-mails in a box,how do I Delete a certain one
WithOut having to open it up?

When I first click on the one I wish to delete,it opens right up,I
would like to get rid of it altogether without Ever opening it.

Then to top it off,if that message happens to be the only one in the
trash folder,Or the first one in there-when I Right click on the Trash
folder with the intention of Emptying it,that Same e-mail is opened up
again!

There must be a simple solution that I am overlooking-help..

Thanks,

You could do it with an Outgoing Mail filter - in the Advanced tab of
that there's an option 'Message is larger than ... K Bytes'. Setting
... to 200 would trigger the rest of the filter in the situation
described.

I think the pop-up box is beyond TB!*, but you could certainly park
the message in the Outbox (see 'Park the message' in the Actions tab)
and play a suitably annoying sound (same tab at bottom).

Alastair

* that inspires a feature request; it would be very easy to add a
filter option to pop up a box with text defined in the filter.

It should have something to do with your address book:

This is a forwarded message
From: Dave Gorman <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>

Subject: Invalid argument to date encode

We found the answer -- I thought I would post it here just to
have it on the record!

When my coworker imported Outlook's AB, he matched the birthdate
field. However, during the import, if Outlook's birthdate field
was empty, the import converted it to a string of zero's, which
is not a valid date string. Deleting all the address book entries
and re-importing (without the birthdate field) fixed the problem.

I'm here in Germany and the first msg on Feb. 9. was written a 00:08
