Template Questions

2002-07-12 Thread Chris Montgomery

Howdy TheBatUsers,

All of my mailing list messages are filtered into individual common
folders. I want to edit the reply template for responding to list
messages. I don't have any reply templates defined yet, either for
the folder or in the address book for the list address. Where are
the default templates defined for common folders?

Reading over the FAQ, I see that custom templates can be defined for
address groups. Right now, I have a separate address book for my
mailing list addresses. These are not in a group. It doesn't appear
that templates can be defined for an address book, just groups,
correct? So, would it make more sense to move my mailing list
addresses into a group under an address book? For the moment, I want
to use the same reply template for all mailing list addresses.

  Thanks.

TB! hasn't changed the creation date of the messages. TB! has a column
that tells you when messages were downloaded to TB! and an import time
is also generated. This has nothing to do with the message headers or
content. If all those messages were imported at the same time then the
received times will be the same. However, the message creation times,
i.e., the times each message was created as seen in the message
headers, are as they were in Outlook Express.

I found this to be how my redirects work, with the exception
of a return path being added (I assume for bounces).
Clicking reply in the redirected header sets the To: field
to that of the orignmal posters From:. Perhaps you have an outbound
rule/filter overriding the redirect? Perhaps one of the more
knowledgeable TBUDL'rs will have a better answer.

I here what your saying. I've had some things pulled on me and

I think your key word is ACTIVITIES. Personally I don't want laws to
impact use of the internet. The internet is the one thing in this
world that offers to some degree the free exchange of ideals across
all borders. This is the true potential of the internet. It is this
means which offers a balance of power which is necessary.

No, when I first set up TB! everything I imported got a received time
coinciding with when it was imported/received by TB! I can look at any
of those folders and tell you that I imported my messages on 10 March
2001. I can still tell the age of the messages by looking at when they
were created, so it has never been a problem for me that that is how
it worked.

I fail to understand the purpose of OfflineIMAP. The whole point of IMAP
(or: one key advantage over POP3) is that the mailbox resides on the
server, allowing for multiple clients to connect to the one server and
always access the same mailbox.

TB! has a way to go in terms of IMAP support; TB! sadly uses IMAP only
as a transport protocol but doesn't really use the server side mailbox.
However, a "OfflineIMAP" tool as described above is IMHO pointless.

Can anybody enlighten me, please?

On Friday, July 12, 2002 at 10:24 GMT -0500, legend has it that Joseph
N. [JN] recited the incantation:

JN> I hope you don't mind this off-list reply/question

Well, this would have been fine on-list. It isn't off-topic or too
complex for TBUDL. In fact, I think it's a good question, so I'm
posting my reply to the list too.

JN> What does your combination of macros achieve that is different
JN> than turning off auto-format and just indenting the second line?
JN> IOW, what is the purpose of your macro combination? I couldn't
JN> tell by reading them.

It isn't the same at all. The templates I referred to are an easy way
to execute the %WRAPPED macro. They also extend %WRAPPED's function
in that my templates work on multiple paragraphs. The point is,
%WRAPPED will deal with numbered lists correctly. So,

[Begin Example]
1. This is some test. I don't really have any formatting going on
here, but once we use %WRAPPED, we'll get:

1. This is some test. I don't really have any formatting going on
here, but once we use %WRAPPED, we'll get:
[ End Example]

With my template, you don't have to worry about indenting the second
line, and you don't have to worry about using ALT-L all the time. You
just finish your list item, put it in the clipboard and execute the
wrap macro. All the formatting and wrapping will be done for you.
I am not saying my method is better or worse, it is just another
option.

2002-07-12 Thread Januk Aggarwal

Hello Sudip,

It was foretold that on Friday, July 12, 2002 at 17:07 GMT +0530,
Sudip Pokhrel [SP] would type:

SP> This works like a charm Januk ! Thanks a lot. Isn't it possible to
SP> combine this macro with the "bq" macro to automatically wrap the
SP> pasted quotes? How?

I'm not entirely sure I understand your request. You want to use
Carsten's boxquoting template in conjunction with the wrap macro?

If that's what you want to do, it was done on the TBTECH list some
time ago. There has been a bugfix since then that would change the
template somewhat, but I don't think I'll post the updated version
here. If you want to know more, we should move this conversation to
the TBTECH list (see footers for details).

Tooltips are much better. whenever I get a new software with new icons
(and so on) I immediately change the toolbar buttons to show images
only with tooltips.

I use ctrl + arrow right to go to the next unread message. It works here on
a German Windows 98 SE. I read others use ctrl + ] for it. This works here
too, but additionally a "quick search" window is opened, probably because I
have to type alt gr (right alt key) + 9 to achieve ] on this keyboard. The
arrow down key works too, if the thread is expanded and the focus is on
the messages window. Then TB! goes to the next message, read or not.

Many non-English keyboards have 3 chars is some (or many) keys. For
example Spanish keyboard's 2 key, you get " with shift and @ with
AltGR. The "[" is actually an AltGR character, that's why is unusable
for TB's message list navigation.

No... not kidding you... at least it never used to work on the 400 odd

have a clue. I think the UK manufacturers probably had a higher scheme
of things, but never put the functionality in, but changed the keycode

I work with a lot of newbies. They very badly want text labels under
their toolbar icons. They also very badly want everything they do
regularly on their toolbar. The reason is simple: it's a whole lot
easier to figure out how to do what they want to do. Because The Bat!
does not have these capabilities, I needs must give them Outlook
Express. But isbister (makers of Time & Chaos) now has an email
client; perhaps I can give them that.

Useful tool?

2002-07-12 Thread William Moore

Hello TBUDL

I know next-to-nothing about IMAP save that I think it causes problems
for those using TB's implementation.

Might this be a stop-gap until v2?

http://gopher.quux.org:70/devel/offlineimap

To quote the site

OfflineIMAP is a tool to simplify your e-mail reading.
With OfflineIMAP, you can read the same mailbox from mul-
tiple computers. You get a current copy of your messages
on each computer, and changes you make one place will be
visible on all other systems. For instance, you can
delete a message on your home computer, and it will appear
deleted on your work computer as well. OfflineIMAP is
also useful if you want to use a mail reader that does not
have IMAP support, has poor IMAP support, or does not pro-
  vide disconnected operation.

It was the last sentence that prompted me to post.

If you're using a US keyboard, with the US character map, you can use
the second ALT key on the right hand side of the space. But your
point still stands... you have to stretch the fingers a bit to hit
different keys. Fortunately I have wide hands, and my little finger
does odd things, I can reach the F12 key from the ALT key on the left
hand side of the space bar ;)

It's not too difficult to do I guess... just force the person's PC to
use a different DNS server, and remap what each of the services points

I'll pass on AVG & ZA 3.0.133 until get some answers. Not a big deal,
since things were working fine.

I'm somewhat concerned about direction of Symantec, Zone Labs, & the
software market in general. From my perspective they are reducing
options for users to manage their own PC. Symantec does NOT have most
of the product updates available for FTP (or HTTP) download. Zone
Lab's web site for 3.x release does not have good support for FAQ's as
it did with 2.x releases. I've used ZAP since 1.x release and
Symantec's products for years.

Not a big deal. I use NAV & run with current ZAP until current support

Hello Ochrid,

I have NAV 2002 with NSW 2002 Pro. I checked the options for NAV &
saw no settings for ports that I could see with quick check.

I did check NAV help. It stated if you don't see icons in tray to
uninstall, then re-install. I use Win98, I see you use XP. Symantec's
NAV 2002 product was release about the time XP was. There may be some
glitches there. From reading this list you probably won't find large
support for Symantec's products here. I've used them for years, but do
agree with substantial # of people that product is turning to BLOAT
ware. I have everything off on boot with NSW except NAV. Symantec is
reducing options to manage your PC. For example most product updates
are no longer available as FTP or HTTP download. At least I couldn't
find them on their FTP site as directed by Symantec's support. Unless
Symantec changes management options after this year of support is up
with the current product, I will probably replace NAV with another
product.

If you have NAV active on boot, you ARE protected. You just can't tell
if attachments are viri. Not a big deal if you don't open attachments
indiscriminately. Even if you do and keep your definitions up to date,
then you should be protected to the extent possible.

This discussion is getting a little OT and not really applicable to
this list. As I stated earlier, I think you should contact Symantec at
http://www.symantec.com/techsupp/ and post message to on-line support.
It is free.

You should not need to touch the .ini files. I only included it in
the FAQ because I found it interesting, and was going to try to get
more information from Palm about the format. Unfortunately, Palm said
'we don't support changing the .ini file by hand, so we are not going
to give you any information about it.'

If someone were to write a conduit to sync Palm mail and TB mail, it
would be similar customizations.

I am involved in trying to get the AB conduit put together, and there
has not been any discussion about adding eMail sync...

You can already sync eMail via the standard MAPI feature of both TB &

Working With SpamKiller

2002-07-12 Thread Kevin Tea

Hello

The amount of spam coming through these days is far too much so I have
bought McAfee's Spamkiller to help with the task.

The process is a two step one with SK running first to nuke the crap
and then running The Bat! to pick up the OK mail.

There is a facility whereby if The Bat! is not loaded, then SK will
launch it but it will only pick up mail if the options are set to pick
up mail on launch. This means that I have to close The Bat! if I want
to use this feature.

Is there some instruction that I can use so that once SK has finished
nuking garbage it will tell The Bat!

Any help much appreciated.

I agree, the footers yahoo/hotmail/etc dump on the bottom is a big
waste as 99% of the time people using OE/Outlook leave them on there
where replying. Thankfully TB! has the ability to do more work. Take
a look at the FAQ page, there is a nice signature stripper that even
gets hotmail/msn/yahoo I believe, as well as PGP stuff too.

Hello ListBuds,

Until this list, I never knew the importance of the sig
delimiter. I don't know if -- is TB standard or if it is
USENET, etc. I wish that groups such as yahoo would adopt it
though.. have you ever looked through their emails! just think of
the wasted storage of those silly signature lines when people
reply and respond.. sometimes the whole message is one line with
like 100 signature lines (from being forwarded).. amazing. So, I
thank all of you for correcting me.. now if we could get the
other groups to understand it.. AND get the other mailing systems
to trim. think of all the eyestrain and storage we could
save.

Don't know about Netscape, but if you can export to a type of file of

If you're willing to use file compare (FC) you could make a backup

Do you have email scanning ON? I use NAV 2002 with email scanning on
and works fine. It has caught 3 or 4 viruses in the last week. On in
coming mail do you see the mail icon in the tray? If no, then either
you have email scanning off, or you have unselected "Display tray icon
when processing Email."

To turn email scanning on go to Options | Select Internet Email and
under "What to scan" select "Scan incoming Email" &/or "Scan outgoing
Email." To make sure it is working under "What to do when scanning
Email" select "Display tray icon when processing Email."

If that doesn't do it, I suggest you contact Symantec at

You should not believe. You should know. I was not telling your setup is
100% perfect and everything works like a charm even if it looks different.
I was just telling you The Bat! AV-Plugins have nothing to do with NAV-2002
and it's transparent proxy function. If NAV-2002 does not scan properly
when The Bat! connects _AND_ the settings for server and port are
identically in The Bat! to the one on OE/NC there's something messy with
NAV-2002. I don't use it myself, I just do know how it's expected to work
from reading technical manuals and the TB-lists.
so have a look into NAV-log file and ask NAV technical support (maybe
online forums or user lists???) why NAV could deny to scan your incoming
mails; it shouldn't if it's set up to scan port 110 traffic and The Bat!
connects to port 110.

to determine whether the AB information will be sync'ed. I am sure
there are many users like me who would be glad to sync their mail, but

I agree, I'll gladly wait for version 2. It's not URGENT, for sure.

I am not a power user, but, yes, what you say makes sense. However,
even the power user, who has probably automated just about everything,
will once in a while receive messages that don't "fit" any rule.
Dealing with these messages is easier, FOR ME, using the toolbar.
Others will undoubtedly prefer the keyboard, the context menu, drag
and drop, whatever. Great!, live and let live! My only point is that
the toolbar features in TB are not at par with its other features and
would be nice to have them improved.

>Can anybody explain to me, why tool bars are _this_
>important to so many
>people, that they'd like to see them customizable better
>yesterday than
>tomorrow?

If you can understand why the keyboard is so important to you then I
am sure you can understand why the toolbar is for others (me
included). Different persons with different tastes, preferences,
habits, skills. We are different, thank God, and Vive la différence!
as the French say (hope it's not misspelled...)

>Therefore it has to be the 'I use my MUA quite more than 2

>of time, shouldn't they? And this can't be reached by using

Why SHOULD anybody do anything? And who is to decide what's the most
effective use of anybody's time if not him/herself?

>Any comment is welcome, this e-mail is no 'judgment' in any
>matter; It's a
>pure expression of MHO and the serious question to myself
>and everybody out
>there: why the hell are tool bars this important, especially the
>customizable ones?

As said before, ask yourself why the keyboard is important to you,
replace the word keyboard for toolbar and you've got your answer.

In my case, I guess it's a habit. I am used to it and feel comfortable
working as I do. Since I am the "chooser", I choose programs that fit
my way of doing things, and if I find a program that I like and don't
quite comply with how I work I'll try to suggest whatever improvements
I deem appropriate. No big deal, no urgency, no nothing. Either that
or keep looking for what I like. Isn't that what most of us do?

>P.S.: Sandro: Your signature delimiter is defect :-)

Would you believe I don't know what a "signature delimiter" is?
Anyway, it's probably because I am still using Outlook.

Best wishes,

Sandro

Is there a way to do that transformation without reinstalling
CC479? I have unistalled it when I successfully moved to OE6
(where I also had an address book problem, which i didn't mind as
I new my OE stage was temporary).

Okay - here's a long shot. Use the TB backup to backup everything.
Lock stock and two smokings.

Now zip up the whole folder for good measure.

Now wipe down the entire base, folders, address book, templates and
everything.

Once everything is back down to zero, try the upgrade. It may or may
not work.

If it does work, use the Restore to bring back all the data into the
working environment.

If not, restore into the old environment and we'll put out rhinking

Thank you for your speedy reply.

You see, both in OE and CC4.79, when NAV scans the incoming emails
you see an active icon on the task bar: first a lens, then an
envelope opening up for EACH message.

And for outgoing, it actually opens a small yellow window saying
it's scanning your outgoing email.

Well, with TB! you see the outgoing window, but you don't see the
active icon for the incoming mail, so why shoul I think it IS
indeed scanning it??

Or am I missing something?

Sorry for that. I said this because i have such kind of experience on
computer, where long time ago was installed this crack. TB! 1.60
simply refuses to install - splash screen of TB! appears, then
installation process stops. Same for copy of TB! installed on another
computer which was transfered on this - splash screen, than abort.
I have spend more than hour because i did not know about this crack
installed. I founded it somwhere in registry / autostart and kill.

First - try to install TB with new dummy account - after this -
make new account with yours old folder. Delete all *.tbi (index) files
in your old folder - TB! will recreate it - it will take some time at
start.

Generating a self-signed certificate for POP3s

2002-07-12 Thread Ralf van der Enden

Hi,

I have a linux box running QPopper 4.04 (from Eudora). After generating a self-signed
certificate for it, I tried connecting to it with The Bat!. The result is that TB!
drops the connection after getting / verifying the certificate. Not giving up I tried
connecting to it with Outlook Express and everything worked fine. I imported the
certificate in both TB! and OE, so that can't be the problem.

After examining the QPopper log files I noticed a difference in the cyphers used.

Here's an extract:

This is when connecting with TB! 1.61 <--

openssl genrsa -out server.key 1024
openssl req -new -key server.key -out server.csr
openssl x509 -req -days 365 -in server.csr -signkey server.key -out server.crt

Does anyone have any experience using QPopper and TB! or know of a way to get this to
work? Did I use invalid commandline options when generating the certificate.

Any help will be much appreciated.

You NAV is already scanning, regardless what e-mail-client you're using, IF

IMPORT OF MAIL FOLDERS from OE6

After a long and belabored series of unsuccessful trials, I finally
succeeded in importing my mail FOLDERS (are these what TB! calls mailboxes?) to

How can I import SMOOTHLY my folders while KEEPING the original date of
receipt of each single message?

Please forgive me for my ignorance, but I really didn't know that this
change over would have required so much trouble and programming
knowledge!:(((

Re: POP3s problem

2002-07-12 Thread Ralf van der Enden

Hi,

The Bat! needs the public key from the POP3s server. You can obtain it by doing the
following:
openssl s_client -connect mail.server.com:995 -showcerts

The Certificate will be encased between the following lines:
-BEGIN CERTIFICATE-
-END CERTIFICATE-

Copy those lines and everything between them, save it to a textfile (name it something
like server.crt) and then include it in the Trusted Root CA folder in your Address
Book. You should then be able to connect to the server without any trouble.

Subject: POP3s problem

Hello!

I have an POP3s email account on a server but I don't have a
Certificate to use with the SSL connection. Until now I used Outlook
Express to get the e-mail from that account. Each time I connected to
the server the client asked me if I trust the certificate or not. If I
said "Yes" all was OK.

Because I heard many good things about The Bat!, I decided to test it and try to get
mail
from the POP3s account. In the logs I see the following lines:

 12.07.2002, 15:01:25: FETCH - receiving mail messages
 12.07.2002, 15:01:27: FETCH - Initiating TLS handshake
 12.07.2002, 15:01:30: FETCH - connection finished - 0 messages received

I don't know if this means something for you but it sure means
something to me because I have 6 emails and The Bat! sais "0 messages received"
without any error message or something. Although I selected to be
prompted for password every time it connects to the account I'm not
asked any password at all. This is why I think that somehow the client
skips the entire authentication phase.

The problem resides on the fact that I do not have an certificate or
there is something wrong with my account configuration ?

My configuration is:
Authentication: regular
Secure to dedicated port (TLS): 995

In Outlook Express the only thing I did was to select the option "This
server requires a secure connection (SSL)" and (almost) all was fine.

How can I resolve this problem with The Bat! ?

Thank you,
Mihai

[EMAIL PROTECTED]">mid:[EMAIL PROTECTED] (at least in part):

M> The problem resides on the fact that I do not have an certificate

Yes. It does.

But you can fetch the necessary certificate and import it into your
'Trusted Root CA' address book in The Bat! and everything should work
smoothly.

You'll need to fetch

http://www.ritlabs.com/download/the_bat/beta/openssl.rar

extract it's content and call

openssl.exe s_client -tls1 -host -port 995

in a command line.

There you'll get a lot of text, some of it "embraced" between

'-BEGIN CERTIFICATE-' & '-END CERTIFICATE-'

You'll need to copy this whole part including '-BEGIN ...' and
'-END ...' into a text file on your hard disk.

Now you'll need to create a new entry in your The Bat! address book in
section 'Trusted Root CA'. Name it to your needs, the shown names doesn't
matter. On the 'Certificate' tab there is an 'Import' button. Use it and
point the dialog to the text file you've just saved.

Now you should be done, IF the certificates 'CN' entry (which you have no
influence on) is the very same as the name you've entered as the one for
'Mail server' in 'Receive mail' section in account properties.

If you're unsure about the whole stuff tell me only the servers name you're
trying to fetch your mail from and I'll catch the certificate, compare the
names and if positive send you the text file you'll need to import into
TB!-AB.

POP3s problem

2002-07-12 Thread Mihai

Thank you,
Mihai

TB would still need a module that hooks into the database. Assuming

by TB and not the central AB database, if you so wish. That does not
change the fact that the email address / name / phone number etc

No problem here. TB will need to read the central database anyway, so

No, a PIM would not. A PIM would only read the info that it is
interested in. But, if I update the email address or phone number from
within the PIM or from within TB, the central database will be
updated. I do not need to change from within the PIM, then from within

TB doesn't need to read them in.

I don't think my proposal includes cutting down on functionality. It
is only that data that is probably used by multiple applications
doesn't need to be stored by each application seperately. Duplication
would thus be avoided, and so would synchronisation issues. For the
user it would be transparent; he would even know whether the data
comes from within TB or from a central database.

MDP> Sure, all names in one place has merit on paper, but clear thought and

I think we would be avoiding duplication. A main point is
synchronisation of databases which would not be necessary any more.

That is another issue. You are probably right that what I suggest does
not exist yet. A good email client didn't exist either before two

The shortcut customizer for TB! has been disappointing since the scope
of choices for remapping doesn't include single keys and the remapped
keys don't always work well especially the ones that normally work
whichever sub-window is in focus. However, it's a new feature-set so I
hope and expect that it will be improved upon. Until then PowerPro is
my friend.

It's a macro tool extra-ordinaire. It can carry out keyboard stroke
sequences, execute apps, bring windows in focus etc. These sequences
can be bound to hotkeys. These hotkeys can be window bound, i.e., they
work only when a particular window is in focus or they can be made
system wide. You can execute these macros using hotkeys or using
toolbar buttons that you create. There are other things that it does,
but I mainly use it for macros. It's very stable and carries a very
small memory footprint. I use it a lot with TB!.

You can get it here:

http://home.inforamp.net/~crs2086/

Another interesting aspect is that it's free. ;)

Marck, I agree COMPLETELY with your sentiments on this issue. I've
always done so but you made your point so well here, I had to
comment.:)

The only working crossroads I see here is easy synchronization between
the two managers to avoid having to duplicate some contacts.

The tight integration of the TB! with it's address book and the
functionality that tight integration offers would be lost with a
centralized system approach.

This basically illustrates the difference in priorities based on
peoples needs. Those who need a calendar in TB! actually need a good
stand alone PIM that support a export/import format that TB!'s address
book does. Synchronisation isn't even necessary in the majority of
instances. The entries in both usually only overlap. In my case, the
overlap is really small though I agree that the overlap would be much
greater in some instances. I strongly think that this particular last
point is being focused on way too much while ignoring the importance
of TB!'s tightly integrated address book in terms of functionality
that wouldn't be needed elsewhere on one's system with the converse
applying. A PIM would offer a lot of functionality that simply isn't
needed in the context of e-mail.

The two need to be separate!

I don't get it. Still the language problem persists. Here's why I
prize the TB "address book" (let's call it the email address manager,
because that's what it really is):

Multiple email addresses per entry
Group templates
Individual templates per entry
Tight interaction between filters / groups / multiple addresses
Integration with macros (%AB.)
Address auto-view giving a "video-mail" like capability when the
photo facility is used.

*Every one* of these superb features would be compromised (interfered
with) by the use of an external AB or PIM. No PIM would even *want* to
hold the kind of information used to give this functionality.

I don't want addresses and phone numbers in TB. I *do* want the extra
space those fields provide so that I can cheat group templates to use
(e.g.) %ABtofax them to give extra levels of intelligent
customization.

The TB email address manager ROCKS! Just stop calling it an Address
Book and it suddenly looks *so* fit for purpose.

The cross-over between addresses in my PIM and addresses in TB is so
small. 10% of my TB contacts are in my PIM. 105 of my PIM contacts are
in my TB AB. The information I keep in TB about those people only ever
crosses over in the Name. That's it.

Sure, all names in one place has merit on paper, but clear thought and
analysis shows what a waste of space it would be to chuck all people
data in one place.

Of course, this is all IMHO and only to provide the counterpoint. I
accept that not everyone uses information in the same way and that

Well, as someone who wasn't always keyboard centric and who uses
toolbars in applications that aren't often used and hence will not
commit to memory the keyboard shortcuts; it's nice to be able to
arrange the toolbar the way I wish. An uncluttered toolbar, especially
one that contains only the buttons that I use, arranged in a way I
prefer, is a lot more comfortable for me to use. I enjoyed using Agent
that much more since I could reduce its toolbar to just 4 buttons,
nicely spaced (keyboard otherwise). I could then get at the buttons
quickly and easily.

I wouldn't use that as an index. Many don't complain about Outlook
Express. Does this mean that better than Outlook Express isn't needed
or that they wouldn't appreciate better if they saw it?

It's often just a matter of taste. Some couldn't care less about
something while others do.

Besides, configurable toolbars were a really cool feature a few years

Because it gives me parental control, control over the appearance of

The supposed benefits of the pro version are listed here:
http://www.agnitum.com/products/outpost/benefitspro.html

The only reason I haven't switched to the free version is that it
crashed my XP based laptop after installation - however, Agnitum do
warn of this being a potential clash between the DLL's of competing
firewalls (I didn't want to uninstall KPF I just disabled it).

PS: Some last minute checking on the web turned up this interesting
article on leak testing: http://www.pcflank.com/art21.htm - it
contradicts what I had heard elsewhere about Agnitum Outpost being
better than KPF at leak tests though the other things still apply.

In reality, I wont allow my children to connect directly to the

Sorry again about the OT, I'll turn off my evangelist mode now!

That's one thing I don't understand since aeons.

The average user that handles his/her few mails a day might use tool bars
quite often as he/she gets no chance to 'learn' the more efficient ways of

a matter of personal opinion if 100 is 'a lot' or if the 'deadline' is 500)
can't be satisfied with using tool bar for every action. In my experience
the heavy mail using people are only satisfied (if ever) when using the
most efficient way of handling the mails. And using the mouse ain't that
one, especially not when relying on tool bars. Using context menu (right
mouse button) might be the 'near the goal' way of doing several actions,
but it still requires me leaving the keyboard.
Most action can be done using the keyboard, that's one of the big plusses
why I'm using The Bat!. The rest can most the time be done using RMB, I for
myself don't even have the tool bars visible.

Can anybody explain to me, why tool bars are _this_ important to so many
people, that they'd like to see them customizable better yesterday than
tomorrow?

My Girlfriend relies on tool bars quite a lot, because she handles their
10-20 mails per days with the mouse (OK, TouchPad) and likes it this way.
But she never complained about them not being customizable. Everything
needed is already there; everything needed occasionally is in the menus or
context menu ...
So it can't be the 'I only want a fast and secure MUA' users begging for
customizable tool bars, as they seem to be happy with present state (in
general, small additional features or functions everybody will search for
in every program).
Therefore it has to be the 'I use my MUA quite more than 2 times a day'
user and _even_ these people should be on the search for most effective use
of time, shouldn't they? And this can't be reached by using only 'tool
bars', or can it?

Any comment is welcome, this e-mail is no 'judgment' in any matter; It's a
pure expression of MHO and the serious question to myself and everybody out
there: why the hell are tool bars this important, especially the
customizable ones?

Problems installing recent versions

2002-07-12 Thread Tim Fountain

I've been a long-term user of the bat, but I've been having a lot of
trouble updating my copy of the program recently. Whenever I download
the newest version, after installing it the program freezes on the
startup banner (and has to be closed by Windows). I have a copy of
1.53d lying around, so luckily I can reinstall that copy and get
access to my email again, but it's still a bit of a problem!

Originally I assumed it was just a problem with my machine (running
Windows 2000), but yesterday I tried installing the latest version on
my machine at work (which runs Windows XP Pro), and that had the same
problem.

Does anyone have any ideas?

I was trying a 'demo' version of NAV and had the same problem you describe
but with version 3.0.118!

I've now gone back to AVG and I'm trialling the AVG plugin along with
TB.

I agree with this. The synbchronisation of databases I referred to in
another arm of this thread meant maintianing seperate addressbooks for
seperate applications.

There should be one addressbook, containing all information. A
relational database. My main addressbook is carbon-based and contains
all information, including both email address and mailing address.

However, I do not see why it should be responsibilty of an email
client to provide such a "complete" addressbook, which will contain a
lot of data not needed by it. I would think it is time for a seperate
addressbook program into which email clients, PIMs, and other
application can hook into.

If I then change the email address, for example from within the email
application, the one database is updated. Another application reading
data will get the updated data.

awc> It drives me nuts that there is not a calendar in TB!

I would believe there is one on your PC. What is the differencer
between openig a TB calendar window and the OS' calendar in a window?

I don't think it is the job of an email client to provide a calendar,
reinvent the wheel, or cook coffee. Even though anything is possible.

Your hope about plugin ability will come true. :-)
