IMAP and GMX (Mailprovider)

2003-09-03 Thread o . voelker
Hi!

I did some test with IMAP and GMX and discovered some problems:

1. I create a new folder in The Bat. It is shown correct within GMX, but I
have to restart The Bat to see the folder.
2. Existing folders using umlauts are shown very funny within the Bat (e.g.
Pers&APY-nlich instead of Persönlich)
3. I cann't create subfolders. Is that not supportet by GMX?

BTW... What is the correct setting to get all messages and than delete it it
at the server automatically?

Did you add this AB filter to your previous filter as an additional
condition set? That's the only reason I can imagine that it interferes
with your old filter.
Create a new filter, use as condition a dot in the kludges (triggers
always) and set the address book condition on the 'Advanced' tab.

If this isn't the case, then you'd better post your filter, so we can
have a look at it. In order to post a filter, select it in the sorting
office, press Ctrl-C (don't use the copy-button, that's something
entirely different) and paste it into your message.

PC> What am I missing?

A correct signature delimiter: dash, dash, space, enter at a new line.
That enables your correspondents with adult mail clients to
automatically strip your signature (and the list's) in a reply.

Macro / Template annoyances

2003-09-03 Thread Pixie
Hi,
Apparently macro placement has become more critical in v2.00 - I was
able to use %ACCOUNT anywhere in the (AB) template with 1.62r where
now it will break (if placed below) %fromname.

Why would I do that? Because of the annoying blank lines that are
added to a message when templates use certain macros.

Is there a way that despite the apparent new placement requirements
that I can keep macros such as %ACCOUNT, %QUOTES, etc from adding
their own new lines?

The only resolution which seems to be is to put all the macros on one
line, which is rather nasty looking in the template editor.

EG:

%ACCOUNT="PICTURES"%
TO=""%TO="""%OFromName"" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>"
On%SETPATTREGEXP="(?m-s)Date\:\s*?((.*?[\d]{4})\s*?([\d]{0,2}\:[\d]{0,2})\s*?(.*))"%-
%REGEXPMATCH="%HEADERS" GMT, %OFROMNAME wrote:

..will add new lines at the top of the message.

Similarly, I wound up using %QUOTES%CURSOR since %QUOTES adds a blank
line. There is generally enough cleanup to do when replying for me to
enjoy cleaning up what the template produces also.

With 1.62r the macros that generate these new lines seemed quite
comfortable being below the tear-line thus provided a decent
workaround.

The Bat 2: a first glance ... and ... a disapointment

2003-09-03 Thread Clemens Schwaighofer
Hi,

well because I use TheBat since a very long time I really looked forward to
the Version 2. why? full IMAP support, well it has and it looks good, full
Multi Language Support, means Japanese (ISO-2022-JP, Chinese, Korean, etc)
... but no, same bad thing like before. why? Why is there no better support
for this, why is there no sepperate setting for each language and their
fonts. A very bad thing IMO. Or perhaps I missed it?
Next thing is the PGP implementation. with the built in there is still no
possibility to easily add a public key or check a key online, nor to export
your generated key to a key server. So, on the first glance there is nothing
new. I should pay something for this? why?
I'd rather switch to Mozilla, I might have a downpoint with notification of
new mail there but I have perferect multi language support, perfect
Open/GNUpg implementation (through enigmail, I'd suggest to the TheBat
developers to take a look at it, to see HOW a cryption plugin shall work),
etc.

well I just hope the version 2 might fixes the points in future, but I doubt.
at the moment I will stick with 1.6x. works okay for me. ...

If TB! can tell which key to use based on the name and e-mail address in

Uh-oh. I have the occasional need to send HTML-coded mail, so I did a

this:

"This program will steal your passwords and people will be able to see
all your personal information. I contacted the government to

and this

"BEWARE!!! Secretly sends your password to malicious hackers!" This
program is not what it seems. My technical software analysis team has
debugged the program and found it to be full of holes and security
breaches. It doesn't just install spyware on your system. It also
sends your password to most likely malicious hackers. Then a few
months when you least suspect, your email account is taken over and
un-usable. This program also appears to send your email to multiple
advertising companies, hence making you put up with more and more ads
in your inbox each day. There have been a number of programs that are
silimar to this one, it's only a matter of time before they can be
stopped!"

There were a few positive responses, but many were negative and warned
of security problems. Enough to scare me away!

I've had problems. When I did, the problems weren't restricted to just

internet connection with difficulties connecting to my ISP. A reboot
would fix the problems.

As Roelof pointed out in one of his messages, it would appear that
things can go awry with ZA during long periods of machine uptime. As
soon as I discovered the problem I switched to using one of the many

alternatives that will do just as well.

It's problems aren't only confined to TB! use. But then, problems vary
in severity if and when they exist at all. All in all, this makes its
reliability questionable. Of course, nothing beats ones own personal
experience. If it's working for you then use it.

You should take a look. As the man who popularized ZA says, Tiny
Personal Firewall, now known as Kerio, is 'terrific' and it would have
been his personal choice if at the time it has multiprocessor support.
:) I've personally used it and found it to be a step up from ZA in
configurability and tunability. Most of all, it *never* did any
unexpected blocking and worked and worked, no matter the machine's
uptime.

There are no clients that I know of that will do the things TB! can on a
specific basis or on the basis as TB! as an overall package. TB! is not
replaceable for me at least. There are many capable firewall's out
there. If one isn't working for me, I can easily find one that does.
There's Kerio, Sygate, Outpost, 8 Signs, BlackICE (my current choice),
among other.

Have you tried the IMAP folder management dialog, it should find the new
folder.

This has already been reported, it is a known issue and it will

Yes, as far as I know, GMX currently does not support folder nesting.

I can't help you with that. What you want is like emulating POP3 but via
IMAP with multiple folders. Perhaps somebody else can help.

Are you speaking of the PGP integrated support for v5,6,7,8 or are you
referring to the internal PGP version?

The inbuilt integration for PGP v5,6,7,8 works pretty much like how the
previous plugins worked when doing these sort of key management
manoeuvres.

How is it that you wish to add a public key?

Usually, if the PGPKey is in the message text, then doing a verify, or
using the 'import PGP certificate' command from the Tools/Message
Security' options will initiate the importation process.

If you attempt to verify a signature and you don't have the key on your
keyring, PGP's autokey finder will start provided you configured PGP to
do so.

If you're using the internal PGP which is v2.6, then I'd not advise this
since you're stuck with using only RSA keys.

CS> or check a key online, nor to export your generated key to a key

There's a lot that's new. You just have no interest in using them. No
problem there really. Everyone works differently.

TB!'s plugin for the later versions of PGP work just fine and with its
macro support will do things other plugins will not.

Without subfolders it will be a little bit confusing...

I don't have a flatrate, so I often get all messages and answer some time
later
And IMAP is the only way to filter mails at the server.. (and read them
within a mail client ;) )
And I can store them at the harddisk There is a little bit more space
than at the server *g*

No-show messages

2003-09-03 Thread Bill Blinn Technology Editor
Is anyone else seeing this surprising feature in v.2?

I have about half a dozen accounts that TB checks. Messages are sorted
into about 100 folders. All of that works properly, except that for
ONE account, the list of accounts doesn't change to indicate new mail
is present.

This happens on both the home and office machines.

It's a different account in each case, but both of the accounts are
about 3/4ths of the way down the list. The account in question never
lights up until I select the inbox.

Most of the accounts have a specific sound attached, so I know where
to look even if the account doesn't light up. IOW, it's not a killer,
just a minor annoyance. It would be easy enough to move the account up
or down to see if it's somehow a positional thing -- or even to delete
the account and recreate it.

Hi Richard,

Sure. I put that up as:

http://harlos.net/glyphs_YellowMessageListIcons.bmp

Of course, the name has to be changed to glyphs.bmp, and the usual
warning about being sure to rename old files rather than overwrite them
with these ones applies:-)

Using the grid analogy in a previous message in this thread, the icons
changed in this one in addition to the first changes that I made are
G1 and G13

For those wanting to try changing the glyphs, it was straightforward
to bring it in to Paint Shop Pro (I'm sure any graphics editor would
do), and try different looks.

Yes, that's what I've been using. It's slow (or at least, it's slow when

Interesting. I've been using Foxmail for a couple of years now. I've not
had any problems with security, nobody has hacked my account, none of my
email accounts has been taken over, & I only get spam on the accounts
that already got spam before I used Foxmail, & I don't get any more spam
on those accounts than I already did.

BBTE> There were a few positive responses, but many were negative and
BBTE> warned of security problems. Enough to scare me away!

H...I just had a look at the negative reviews. There were several
which said the same thing, word-for-word, but used different names,
which makes me think someone's got an axe to grind . Then there's the
person who says it wouldn't work with Tiny Firewall (it does for me) so
he/she had to disable the firewall to send/receive mail (bit of a silly
thing to do really...). Then there's the one that says you can't see
received html...yes, you can, you just click the html symbol at the top
right of the preview pane. Or the one who says he prefers Incredimail.
Or the one who complains that when he clicks on an email address on a
webpage, it starts Foxmail when he wants to use something else...

My personal favourite, though, is the one which says: "Plain fact is
there is nothing to equal OE. If only my OE would work"

ROFL!

Second opinions are often helpful. I'll download it and take a look.

The problem with C|Net, I suppose, is that opinions by techno-turnips

I don't mean the keyboard shortcuts editor itself, but a section in it
that used to be called, in 1.6x, something like "Attachments Pane
PopUp", and there you could modify shortcuts for actions such as "Open
This Attachment", "Save All Attachments" etc.

This is what my keyboard shortcuts editor looks like in Version 2.0's
main window:
http://avenarius.sk/misc/keyboard_shortcuts.gif
If you can help me where, in this editor, to find the option, for
example, to switch the shortcuts for "Open" and "Save" attachments
(I'd like to have ENTER and CTRL+ENTER the other way round for the two
actions -- it was possible to switch them in 1.6x), I'd be grateful.

And you're right, the location of that editor under "View" menu is
illogical. It should perhaps be located in the recently introduced
centralized "Preferences" dialog, even though The Bat! is devious in
that the same keyboard shortcut performs a different action depending
on where you currently are (writing a message, reading a message,
performing a search, or simply in the main window).

That is another *wonderful* aspect of TB. Still, all of these
variables could be brought together in the centralized Preferences
window. I mean, since the Preferences window features two sets of
preferences for two various TB editors, why couldn't the same window
feature four or five sets of preferences for keyboard shortcuts for
each of TB's working environments? The four or five environments could
be hidden under a common heading such as "Keyboard Shortcuts
Remapping" and could be unpacked using the customary + sign/key so
that they wouldn't clutter the Preferences window.

The only thing that really annoys me is that update policy with its two
months restriction. I registered the program when the version# was 1.62i in
the beginning of 2003. People using TB for years are paying the same update
price like those who bought it only months ago. And in three months, when
TB2 may have features that I find useful (which the update does not right
now, at least for me) and want to update, I'll have to pay the full price,
or how will that be handled?

I haven't seen anything like that before, and I'm surprised most people
seem to simply accept that. I understand perfectly well that it is time for
the developers to get money for their efforts from those users who have
been getting many many free updates, but I wished the update prices
would've been more version#, hence age dependant. Not that I couldn't
afford it, it just doesn't feel right.

IMAP and delete/trash

2003-09-03 Thread Clive Taylor
I'm experiencing some show-stopping problems using IMAP with TB 2.0.
I know others have reported problems but are they wide spread or is
there a peculiarity on individual machines making IMAP a real pain?

1. TB will not delete messages from their folder or from the
server. Pressing delete does nothing. Changing advanced
options|mail management to "mark as delete" does no such thing.
It removes the message from the message list on hitting delete
but the message does not appear in Trash or on the server as
deleted - or marked for deletion.

2. I can't configure a trash folder anyway. The account log tells
me the folder "Inbox.Trash" doesn't exist. Where are deleted
messages supposed to end up - assuming they are deletable in the
first place?

I'm not able to delete messages or folders either. To make matters
worse, half the time I try (especially when deleting a large number of
messages) my machine freezes and I have to re-boot with CTRL-ALT-DEL.
Needless to say, I'm done testing the new IMAP features until I hear

Michael, I loaded your glyphs file into Paint to take a peek, and I
*really* like them, and want to use them.

But because of your warning, I'm concerned with overwriting the
existing glyph's file, and there *must* be one somewhere, right? Even
if I can't find it.

I ran a search for a file name of glyphs.bmp, and it could only find
*your* file, which I had downloaded to a temp folder. I scoured the
TB's home directory (the one that contains thebat.exe file), and found
no file even remotely resembling it.

So, all I need to do is copy your file to *that* directory, right?
I.e., TB's home directory.

How does TB know to use your file for glyphs and not the default file
(wherever it may or may not be hiding)?

Thanks!

There isn't a default "file". It's hard coded into an internal
resource. If TB detects a glyphs.bmp on startup, and imports the
bitmap into the resource, and uses them instead. The defaults are
safe, all you have to do to "restore" them is remove the glyphs.bmp.

If you don't find it, there is none. TB! takes the glyphs hard coded in

Being dependent on version number wouldn't have made them age-dependent
- lots of people who've been using TB for a long time have been updating
& would be running the same version as those who started using it six
weeks ago.

A> Not that I couldn't afford it, it just doesn't feel right.

Be glad you can afford it. I'm annoyed about the two-month limitation

In TB! 2.0 you'll PGP/MIME sign by checking "Sign on sending". However,
I wouldn't advise it for this list, because AFAIK it doesn't accept

Thanks, Jernej, I got it now.

But your post forces me to ask another question (hey, when you're on a
run, you take advantage of it, right?).

How come your post's headers are arriving in a different font/character
set, or at least they seem to be. And they're smaller, lighter than any others.

Are you somehow overriding some kind of default that I've set up?

Inquiring minds want to know!

My messages come in either iso-8859-2 or windows-1250 character set, as
iso-8859-1 and windows-1252 don't contain the č character used in my last
name - probably your default font doesn't have this character, so The Bat
selects another, which has it.

How to register -- page not found?

2003-09-03 Thread Steve M. Sawczyn
Hi all,

I installed TB 2.0 l/ast night and so far, like what I see. I only recently purchased
TB and was wondering if there was any sort of upgrade path. Rather than bother
everyone on the list, I went under help/how to register. I got a "this page can not
be displayed. I then tried pulling up the FAQ, again under help, but with the same
result.

I have to look up my original registration info as I'm not exactly sure when I
purchased TB, but once I find it, how can I figure out if an upgrade path exists?

Any help greatly appreciated,

We do allow MIME signatures here now, since this is an official

than non-MIME signatures.

Oh yes, and you can set PGP-Mime options manually in the Privacy

Had a go at doing it myself Before I read your message and came up
with the same envelope colours as you. Your glyphs are easy to redo
because they can be done in situ whereas other glyph files need
individual copying and pasting to change them.

Great fun to play around with though and get, eventually, exactly what
you want! Thanks for starting me off but I'm going to waste a fair
amount of time on them :-)

This posting violated the list rules regarding top posting.

Top posting, i.e., typing all your reply text at the top of your message
and following it with all quoted text below, is not encouraged and we
actually request that you not do so on this list because

a) It makes it difficult to glean context from what you typed at the top
of the message

and

b) It encourages excessive quoting.

We would much prefer if you quote just that much of the message to which
you're replying, so we know what it is you're referring to, and then
below the quotation, type your response. If you're responding to more
than one parts of the original, then quote each part separately and
follow each part with your response.

Now, I know that you may not personally prefer this format and that you
may disagree with some of the reasoning here. We very much respect this.
However, this is the format that most of the active members here prefer
and all members are expected, and are being asked to use the format that
will make most of the active membership here comfortable reading.
You'll likely get a more responsive group when you post using a

Thanks very much for reading. :)

Have you checked your system date and time? The received times are
usually generated through your system time. Received time is when TB!

I am receiving allot of spam. When the messages arrive which I do not

Yes Vishal I have - it works fine for me.. (I did reply earlier but
you maybe didn't see it).

I used TB! 1.62 with ZA Pro 2.6 until recently using automatic mail
checking on one mail account and it worked fine. I've now switched to
TB! 2 and ZA Pro 4 and it still works just fine.

Many on list don't like ZA but I do and have never had any problems
with either the free or the Pro versions.

If you can't get automatic checking to work with it it must be a
setting somewhere that needs changing - does TB! have permission to
access the net always without asking through ZA?

It might be useful if you tell us what you TB! settings are for the
mail checking also - Account » Properties » Options » Mailbox
Checking.

I use TB! 2 (and v1.62 before upgrading) with the free version of ZA (as well also
behind a hardware firewall) using automatic mail checking on two mail accounts and have
had no problems.

Nor do I remember having to go to any great lengths to get the automatic mail
