This is what I am doing. However, I'm not ignoring, but deleting
unwanted messages. Having accidently (and still not knowing why)
deleted a non-spam-msg of minor importance I have now activated the
automatic mail dispatcher every time I check mail (for the account

Btw:

You may remember someone on the list once mentioned killfiling mail

X-Mailer: The Bat in the headers, because TB!-maild doesn't show
this combination. I checked may spam and now I'm also killing messages

Nope. The AV on this system is set up to ignore the Bat Mail folders.

TF Message Depatcher:

TF List boxes can still not be seen.

Correction: the list boxes are perfectly navigable, but the check

trainable in Jaws by labeling the graphics for checked and unchecked.

TF Hm. I have reports from Jaws users that the Mail Despatcher is pretty
TF unusable for them. But I understand that there is a standard which
TF doesn't require to train Jaws; so is it a bug or not? - Jaws doesn't

I don't really know what you mean by standard that doesn't require
training, so can't say for sure if this is a bug and where it lies.
The controls in the dispatcher are non-windows-standard, which means
that a screen reader could have difficulties recognizing controls for
what they are. In Jaws, it was possible to label the graphics for
checked and unchecked status, thereby one could get the right info, in
Hal, it's a little bit trickier, see below.

I've not examined the trainability options in Hal 5.21,
(http://www.dolphinuk.co.uk) the screen reader i'm using, but i will
and get back with a report on how this goes.

TF I'm looking forward to your report. I will also check out whether Hal

They indeed offer a demo version so it shouldn't be any problems
testing it. The demo is located at: http://www.dolphinuk.co.uk or if
that doesn't work try www.dolphinuk.com.
The trainability wasn't that good in Hal. I'd hoped that the check
controls could be recognized as untrained objects, but from the tiny
test i did, it appears that it didn't. I guess it's a matter of
labeling graphics even in Hal.

My dear Batters, could we have a concise, succinct roundup of helpful
advice on solutions (e.g. Bayesian filtering). While I embrace
Bayesian in principle, it has occurred to me that implementations
mentioned here in terms of The Bat are occasionally a bit
trouble-prone and I already invest enough time maintaining IT here. I
need to feel reasonably safe in this before I actually install

A question: when we say Bayesian, shall we agree this should mean
automatic learning (and not manual design) for filters?

You will probably receive better solutions from others. But my simple
approach is to filter all Welcome mail into folders, leaving the
unknown-unwelcome mail in the general InBox.

Filter for specific known items into appropriate folders, followed by
the last filter, being The Bat's Known filter to put any non-specific
items into a Welcome folder.

This leaves everything else to sit in the InBox. Here you can giv it a
quick glance before deleting the lot.

TB! Files Corrupted or Infected

2003-09-27 Thread Paddy L
I hope you all will forgive me for using Opera's mailer. Special apologies

Using registered TB! 2.00.6
This morning I opened TB! and found that my the_bat.exe and many other
files in my TB! directories have been changed to numbered files. E.g.,
17240. Note the . is part of the filename and not the extension
delimiter.
I have a bunch of older versions of the_bat.exe in a subdirectory and
they were all renamed in a similar fashion.
A couple of my accounts survived with correct filenames and messages bases
intact but most of my accounts have been changed.
I renamed my changed 2.00.6 executable to the_bat.exe just to see what
would happen and upon running it, new account icons appeared in place of
the old @. This is the first I've seen of these even though I've been
running v2.00.6 for a couple of weeks.
If this has been previously addressed, my apologies. My TBUDL files are
gone missing and I've had problems with my web connections today.
Any help in repairing and recovering greatly appreciated.

I can't comment on what may have caused the bulk renaming of all of

No - this is an OR condition: if one does not do it, the second
will. I have the sender filter first, then the addressee. I also have
some Subject items I forgot to mention which would be yet a third
Selective download filter:

virus

Critical

undelivered

I can't comment on what may have caused the bulk renaming of all of
your files, but I can make a good guess as to why you now have
mailboxes instead of @ signs. I'll bet you were previously using a
custom glyphs.bmp and it, too, has been renamed! That leaves you
exposed to the new v2 default icon set.

You are right. Thanks.

The renamed files are a puzzle. If I'm willing to remove The Bat!
completely and do a new installation, I can try to restore from my last
backup, but that will br from the backup of the beta 2.0 done just before
installing the final. I'll lose the last 10 days of mail, including some
fairly important stuff.

I've done scans for viruses and trojans and nothing is found. The file
renaming is confined to The Bat.

This is the first real problem I've had with TB! in several years of use.

This is what I'd probably do. First close TB! and rename C:\Program
Files\The Bat! to something else. Then do a clean install and restore
your last known backup.

Now to recover your lost messages...

First, the facts. Renaming files doesn't change the modified date. The
TB! folder view is replicated on your hard drive. Each mail folder
typically contains two files; i.e. MESSAGES.TBI and MESSAGES.TBB.
MESSAGES.TBB is often but not necessarily the largest of the two files.

Therefore, you should be able to import messages (ToolsImport
MessagesFrom The Bat! Message Base (.TBB-files...) into a temporary
folder in TB! by identifying which files were modified after your last
backup and renaming them to MESSAGES.TBI and MESSAGES.TBB. If you get it
the wrong way round TB! will say that no files were imported. Finally,
you can move them to your inbox, apply your filters and then use
Folder-Maintenance... to remove dupes etc.

Hopefully, that's helpful. But whatever you decide to do please keep a
copy of all files.

Reply Function Suddenly Stopped Quoting Message Being Replied To - in One Account

2003-09-27 Thread JM14

Hi,

I'm using TB version 1.48e. It has worked just fine for a long
time.

But suddenly -- opening the program today, receiving messages,
starting to reply -- the quoting function did not/does not work
in one of my three accounts. I go to reply, TB brings up the
proper reply screen, but where there should be the original
message, quoted as in the example below from a recent post to
this list . . .

PL The renamed files are a puzzle. If I'm willing to remove The
PL Bat! completely and do a new installation, I can try to
PL restore from my last backup, but that will br from the

. . . there is nothing, just a blank white space in the text
window, as if I were composing a new message with the New Message
function.

I am baffled:

1. I changed no settings that I am aware of.

2. I searched through the Account, Tools, View menus
looking for something I could do to restore the Reply function,
with no luck.

3. If I move any message from the afflicted account X to either
of my other two accounts, I can reply properly, with the original
message fully quoted as it should be.

4. If I move any folder from the afflicted account X to either
of my other two accounts, I can reply properly, with the original
message fully quoted as it should be, to any message in that
moved folder.

5. If I move any message (or folder) from either of the two
still-good accounts into the afflicted account X and try to
reply, the quoting function does not work and there is nothing
but blank white space in the text window.

These various tests seem to indicate indicate clearly that the
problem is in account X rather than in TB. But darned if I know
what to do about it.

Am I not seeing something obvious? Any suggestions?

Many thanks.

Be well,
Jerry

Nope. The AV on this system is set up to ignore the Bat Mail
folders. But that may be worth looking into. Thanks Jon.

You might have it set to ignore TB Mail folders, but that doesn't
include Temp right? When TB is downloading emails, it writes the data
into a temporary file (one for each mail) into the temp folder. Whilst
the file is being open for writing/reading, virus scanners will lock
it before you can do anything with it. I think this kind of behaviour
has been observed before on this list a long while back.

I've got something like that. Sometimes TB freezes on replying via the
reply-button on the toolbar. For me it happens when my template uses a
different language than my previous reply. As I'm e-mailing bilingual
that's kind of a nuisance for me.
However, when I'm replying with Ctrl-Enter nothing's amiss. So these
days I've disabled my toolbar, so I can't use the reply-button and
have to Ctrl-Enter always in order to reply. As I'm rather keyboard
oriented, that's not really difficult for me. You could try it for
yourself.

Quick Search Folder Navigation

2003-09-27 Thread Allen

I use the Quick Search toolbar quite a bit on an every day basis
trying to find this or that message -- which works fine when I'm in
the main TB window. But I have only my message list in that window, no
preview pane, and actually read my mail in a separate window. I often
find myself wishing that I could display the Quick Search toolbar in
the 'view folder' window, as well, but as near as I can tell this is
not possible . . . would love to see it as a new feature.

Also, when in the main client window moving to the next unread message
( ctrl + alt + - ) if there are no more unread messages in the
current folder it will move on to the next folder with unread messages
within. In the folder view, however, such is not the case and I must
manually move on to the next folder. I'd like to, at least, have the
option have folder view behave similarly, allowing me to seamlessly
move from folder to folder chasing unread messages.

I didn't want to send these to the wish list if no one else would find
them useful, so . . . any feedback?

AM Allen, [A] wrote:

AM Same here. I've been wanting this feature for a very long time.

Is it in the BT wishlist? I'll double check and submit it . . . can't
hurt to try.

A I'd like to, at least, have the option have folder view behave
A similarly, allowing me to seamlessly move from folder to folder
A chasing unread messages.

AM I share your sentiments as well.

Maybe I'll wish list that, too, then . . .

AM However, as an alternative to this, I view all new messages in a single
AM separate window. This is the Window that displays all ticker messages
AM for browsing. You could configure the ticker to display unread messages
AM for particular folders. Double click on the ticker, or use your
AM configured hotkey to bring up the ticker virtual folder. Enable
AM View/Message List. You can also enable the 'Folder' message list column
AM so you get an idea of which folder the messages are from. You could also
AM sort according to folder so that the messages from particular folders
AM are clustered together. In this way, you're browsing new messages
AM without having to move from folder to folder. Works very well for me.

That wouldn't work so well, for me, though . . . I suspect that, in
your case, the mail ticker is more or less a permanent fixture on your
desktop? I only display my Inbox and Inbox - Known folders. Basically,
only'personal'stuff appears there. When I'm skimming
folder-to-folder for unread messages, it's usually my TB newsgroups,
my RSS subscriptions [IMAP via blogstreet], and my usenet via
mailgate. This is a bunch of messages that I don't really need
broadcast on the ticker, as I already just assume they're there
waiting for me to get to them -- so that work-around won't really work
so well for me. Subsequently, I end up having to ctrl+alt+g then
select the next folder manually. Which, of course, is not big deal in
and of itself . . . BUT it seems that there /could/ be a better way,
quite easily. And as a long-time TB user, I'm spoiled rotten -- I
expect there to be a quicker way to do pretty much every thing . . .

With some exception, I'm finding that the tool tips read fine.
Incorporating MSAA in TB's html engine would be neat, but it'd
probably increase the size of TB and, well, I kind of like the fact
that is't not that big.

MM How do you read text in Microsoft Internet

CR Yes, but in this case screen readers rely on Microsoft Active

CR Or you could either :
CR - customize the html component used in the bat! enabling the
CR cursor caret. Then we could be able to read html message and
CR scroll them because screen readers could then track the cursor properly,
CR - or letting optionnally the ability to activate the
CR Microsoft Html renderer engine.

Incorporating the ability to activate the Microsoft engine would be
neat, but it should definitely be an option, an option disabled by
default. I wonder what the security implications of this might be?

CR And it would also be very interesting if we could access to
CR the toolbars, the mailticker and so on...

Using my Window Eyes cursor, I can access the toolbars fine. Toolbar
access, especially in MS Office, is greatly assisted by incorporation
