IMAP questions

2004-09-08 Thread Tim
1. What does courier compatibility mode do? I'm pretty sure I'm
connecting to a courier server, but everything has been working
well (except for the next question and my earlier question about
attachments) with compatibility mode not checked.

I've now set it for a couple of accounts, and can't see any
   difference in behaviour.

2. Tonight The Bat! doesn't seem to be disconnecting from the server.
I have eight accounts on one server, but the server only allows
   four connections.

I've set to disconnect after synchronisation, and I've set When
inactive disconnect after 1 second, and I even found and set in the
connection centre Disconnect when session finishes.

But I still have a problem of clicking on a folder in a new account
and getting a beep and Server closed connection in the log panel.
I've watched the connection centre for a while, and it sits there
with four connections for four accounts, but nothing obviously
happening, the request list blank -- and the modem lights are not
   flashing either.

Is there a fourth checkbox for disconnection that I haven't found
yet? Or some other setting I'm missing?

Within TB itself, it's not known to me. With some external utility,
though, which works with macros automating various keyboard/mouse
actions (as PowerPro www.windowspowerpro.com, the former Stiletto,

I don't know details, since I don't use PowerPro for such purposes, (I

There were serious problems for those using TB! IMAP with Courier IMAP
servers. This Courier IMAP server compatibility mode option appeared
during an active go at fixing the problems.

 2. Tonight The Bat! doesn't seem to be disconnecting from the server.
I have eight accounts on one server, but the server only allows
four connections.

This is a tacky problem.

I've set to disconnect after synchronisation, and I've set When
inactive disconnect after 1 second, and I even found and set in the
connection centre Disconnect when session finishes.

How often do you have TB! set to refresh folders? Refreshing folders
checks and does a message count, but no sync'ing occurs.

How often do you have TB! set to do periodic checking. Periodic
checking and checking mail at startup actually results in sync'ing
operations.

If you have the above frequencies set to be too short, then TB! will
very frequently have reason to be connected to the server?

Finally, how do you sync your folders? If the sync'ing is too
aggressive then TB! will spend a lot of time sync'ing folders.

A suggestion:

Since there's an issue with the number of concurrent connections
allowed to the server, I'd set all folders for all accounts not to
sync at all. However, you could for the moment leave periodic
refreshing enabled.

In the account propertes, go to mail management and enable all the
options for auto-connecting to the server.

What this setup does is make TB! connect and sync only when you've
selected a folder. Only that folders headers are sync'd. When you
select a message, the body is retrieved for reading.

This setup will economize how connections are established so that you
always have connections available for what you wish to do and not have
TB!'s automated duties taking up all the connections.

I suspect most of my problem is expectations. When I was using POP, I
used to start up the computer, then go and do other things (make

and almost immediately the message list shows all the new messages. So
I don't go and make coffee; instead I click on the first message, and

I'm still downloading the same data as when I used POP (and therefore

Try only using the refresh folder counts option.

If you wish to browse a folder, then select it and it will sync for
you. I'd stick to sync'ing only headers.

I've had them all set on Headers only. Tonight I've changed some to

In this way the folder will display only unread messages. I thought
this may work for me but upon syncing the already sync'd messages
that are read are removed from the local cache.

A header only sync. Much less than retrieving headers, body text and
attachments.

So I don't go and make coffee; instead I click on the first message,

Depending on the syncing settings for those other accounts and

I haven't yet tried to do anything with virtual folders, even before I

When I said I'm happy with IMAP, I meant I haven't lost any of the

Yeah. That's interesting what happened after Monsieur Descartes. All
those whose emotional levels were screwed up, eagerly started to search
for a better means of identifying and proving something. But, it
happens to them the same what happened with Descartes: they fall as
victims of their own emotions (when the reverend man was killed by the

It's interesting how humanity accepts a shock as an ultimate rule,

Hmmm - I'm not an expert for literature - they both go back to Douglas
Adams Hitchhiker to the galaxy (still didn't read that trilogy.

Ans because you can not see this if you have smileys activated, why
does the h2g2 smiley (that the top one) work without the coluns?

That is in the default.msl file in your images folder. There are the
handles listed, which are responsible for displaying the smileys. If
you'll have a look at it, you'll see two lines like

Smiley = .\Default\h2g2.gif, 0, h2g2
Smiley = .\Default\42.gif, 0, :42:

I think someone did :)

Z Ans because you can not see this if you have smileys activated, why
Z does the h2g2 smiley (that the top one) work without the coluns?

the file is called default.msl and the line for that one is :

Smiley = .\Default\h2g2.gif, 0, h2g2

the first mention is the file, the second is what triggers it. they were
SUPPOSED to change all the smileys to use colons, so normal letters
wouldn't trigger them :) so they changed LOL to
you can put your own images in there, and name them as you wish, and you
can upload any you like to add to the pcwise smileys!!

Filter questions/problems

2004-09-08 Thread Sander van den Berg
Hello TBUDL,

I have some questions and a problem concerning the NFS.

First a problem:
Recently I upgraded from v2.12 to v3.0 (I never used beta versions). Now I
suspect the conversion of my old filters to the NFS went not as it should.
It seems some messages get filtered based on a rule which I already altered
before the upgrade. I cannot verify which filter rule it uses, it concerns a
Read messages filter and apparently these aren't logged.
Has anybody else had problems like this? Or other filter conversion
problems?

This leads to my second question:
The incoming mail filter actions are logged in the account log. But is it
not possible to log all the other kinds of filter actions (read, sent, etc.)
as well?
I am using The Bat! about 4.5 years now and my filter collection has become
quite large. Sometimes I am puzzled which filter it is using, then a logfile
would be helpful.

Third question (also about the NFS):
When using Address groups in a filter rule, is manually typing the name of
the group the only way to select it? In the old filter system you could just
select it from a dialog box. And what if I want to select multiple groups?
Do I type Group1+Group2 or Group1,Group2 or ... ?

Lot of questions... I hope you can help me.

However, when I downloaded and installed SP2 recently, I *gained*
almost 10 *gigabytes* of hard drive space and can't figure out why.

I'm sure it has something to do with overwriting all those hot
fixes/patches that had accumulated since SP1, but...

I can think of two other reasons.

1) It cleared out a BUNCH of temporary files

2) It converted your disk from FAT32 to NTFS. NTFS is better at
handling a bunch of smaller files than FAT32 is, so there is less
wasted space.

...wow, I wasn't aware there's latops with CRT displays! Aren't they
a bit uncomfortable to carry around?

KD Is there a way to compress all folders or selected folders at one time?

From the Main Menu select Folder | Maintenance. From the dialog,
select the folders you want to compress, check the Compress tick box
and go.

Do you have a New mail sound played when you get a new mail

TB! doesn't yet support incoming mail sound notifications for IMAP
mail.

Have you tried virtual folders searching in IMAP folders? Do they
 refresh automatically?

I have a single VF here that I use to remind me of which messages need
replying. I have the folder match messages that are not replied to and
labelled with a particular colour group.

The VF usually updates as soon as I label a message with the colour
group. Additionally, after replying the message immediately disappears
from the VF since it is now flagged as being replied to.
