Yes! You can also click on the language with the mouse while typing a
message, but sometimes it is nice to use the keyboard instead.

TBUDL Mission Statement

2005-09-30 Thread Marck D Pearlstone

Greetings TB Listers,

This is your monthly message from the moderation team to remind you
of the primary purpose of this discussion list.

To review the list rules, follow the link at the end of this message.

Before posting a question to the list, please check The Bat! User's
FAQ at: http://www.silverstones.com/thebat/FAQ.html and the list
archive at http://www.mail-archive.com/[EMAIL PROTECTED] To

There is also a beginners 'MAQ' (Most Asked Questions) available by
clicking here: mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] and
sending the resulting message.

 TBUDL Mission statement

The TBUDL list has been set up for the purpose of discussing The
Bat! and how to use it. It is a community of users ready and able to
help new users get to grips with some of the capabilities of this
flexible email client. More complex issues are discussed on the
TBTECH list (see below for details).

Simply send messages to mailto:TBUDL@thebat.dutaint.com to send it
to the whole list.

See the notes at the end of this message for details about how to
manage your list membership or to leave the list.

It would probably be a good idea for you to set up a folder to keep
TBUDL messages in. If you do this, the next most useful thing to
have in place is an automatic filter to move mail from your inbox
into your TBUDL folder.

Set up a filter for incoming mail which looks for:

Header Field [Reply-To] Contains [EMAIL PROTECTED]

The Roguemoticon Project

It's nice to see your contact's face in the header ... and for them
to see yours. That's what roguemoticons are all about. If you wish
to add yourself, then you'll need to visit this site
http://www.pcwize.com/thebat
What this place will do for you is to allow you to create an
account, add your image and then let you download a .ZIP file
containing all the files you'll need to be able so see people's
faces without having to send or receive any real images in any
messages.

To trigger the roguemoticon display in the message header for anyone
reading your message using TB, you have the choice of using the
X-Rogue: header or a signature trigger.

How to use a signature trigger
The image is triggered by a 'Handle' you've defined in your
account, and when that Handle appears in a message it gets
replaced on the client side by the corresponding image. A handle
could look like anything you want it to look like pretty much.
For example:
:Leif_Gregory:
Just add this text to your standard message signature block.

How to create the X-Rogue: header
You can do that with this macro:
%SetHeader('X-Rogue',':your_handle:')%- in your templates for
this and other tb-lists.
However, the macro alone won't do the trick.
TB'll say: 'Hey, that's not any RFC822 header I know about', so
you'll have to define it as such:
Options .. Preferences .. Messages .. Message headers .. 'Add'

Now you'll get a pop-up to define the header

Display as: X-Rogue (or whatever, it isn't very important)
  RFC header: X-Rogue
Uncheck: 'This field is an address list' (because it isn't)
Check: 'Allow this field to be edited in the message editor'
Uncheck: 'Display this field in the scrollable part of the
  header pane'

Now you're done and every TB-user can see your lovable face when
they've installed the roguemoticons.

For you to see peoples faces:

To get this going, you should be running TB! v2.12 or later. Fetch
  the following file:
  http://www.pcwize.com/thebat/smileys/rogues.zip

Unzip it to the 'Images' directory that's in your TB! installation
  directory: C:\Program Files\The Bat!\Images
You should now have a directory called 'rogues' containing many
images as well as the file 'rogues.msl' in your Images directory.
Go into the preferences, and bring up the View/Editor options. Now
hit Shift-CTRL-Alt-T while TB! is in focus. This will re-fetch
TB!'s smiley set from disk and load the new images.

You can use them for that, but my main purpose for AB groups is
filtering.

LJ> Anyway, having created an empty Address Group, now I can't get the

When the only thing you've done was creating a new group then you
should be able to get back to the root of your AB. On the left side of
the AB you should be seeing your AB tree, all AB's and groups should
be visible, just pick the one you need.

When your problem concerns the address picker that you can reach from
the address bar in the editor window, then you see the name of your
new group with a single downward arrow next to it. Press the arrow
button and select what you want.

In case I'm not making any sense to you, just make a screenshot of
your problem and publish it on your homepage, so we can see what
you're talking about. Don't send it to the list as the list server is
configured to stop those things.

You realize of course that you can assign editor shortcuts to QTs, do
you? That's what I meant in my reply to Jenny. When you're editing a
QT, you've got this options tab and there you can assign an editor
shortcut.
Fancy names are fun when you're calling them automatically from
another template, but when you're busy typing a mail a shortcut is
easier, especially when it's something you're doing a lot.

I don't know a way to do what you want.

However, it might be possible to get the mailticker away from the
vital areas of your screen. Especially if you have it sized reasonably
small itself.

I put my cursor on it (my OS is Windows XP) and simply move it out of
my way, as I would move any other window.

When I've taken care of what I want to, I put it back in the top
righthand corner of the monitor screen, the position I prefer it to be
in most of the time. (I display it in thin view, always on top--set
that in Options/Preferences/Messages/Mailticker. And most of the time
I'm running TB! minimized.)

Sorry Roelof, seems like I wasn't exact enough: I already have set the
mailticker to automatic. But, sometimes the mailticker pops up, but
I'm in a hurry and can't read the mail at once. So I want to make the
mailticker go out of my way, but only until new mails arrive (because
sometimes on a small monitor the mailticker opens over vital areas of
the screen).

Currently I know of two options:

1. right-click on ticker window -> hide: this hides the mailticker,
but it does not come back until I use options -> mailticker ->
   Display -> automatically

2. set all new mails to "read", which is bad: I might overlook a new
   mail later.

What I want to have: an option to hide the mailtickerwindow
for now, without having to read mails/change mail status/hiding the
mailticker completely.

Like Roelof suggested I made a quick template for the Dutch language and
a quick template for the English language.
The only thing I have to do now is type the name of that quick template,
for instance "nl". When I hit ctrl-spacebar the language is changed to
that language. When I want to change back to another language I only
have to type the name I have given to that quick template and press
ctrl-spacebar. Piece of cake!

Very nice suggestion, thanks Roelof.

Yes, according to http://www.group-mail.com/asp/common/features.asp:

"Work with existing data and information in practically any format.
Importing data from existing applications or databases couldn't be
easier. GroupMail can import practically any file type, text, CSV,

that supports ODBC or OLEDB (SQL Server, Oracle, MySQL, Access,
FoxPro, Excel, etc.) can be imported or linked directly into GroupMail
Business Edition. Currently supported (no export to CSV required!!)
address book formats including distribution lists are: Eudora, Outlook
Express, Outlook, Netscape, Opera, AOL, Thunderbird/Mozilla, Lotus
Notes, Exchange, PINE, GroupWise and other formats are being added
continuously. All data imported is checked for duplicates and all
email addresses are validated using strict industry standards for

First I missed the entire concept of templates, no matter what kind it
my be. Can't really see how to do without this, it is just to powerful
a feature to do without.

Secondly filtering. I currently filter a lot of mail the TB!. All of
my business contacts are filtered for incoming and outgoing mail so
all my mail is in one place. I found no way to filter outgoing mail in
Thunderbird.

Thirdly HTML rendering. I only switched to Thunderbird briefly because
of TB! serious lack of development in this area. I had several people
that send mail to me in this format and I needed to have a way to deal
with it. We can whine and complain about HTML mail being the spawn of
Satan all we want but the bottom line is that it is here to stay. The
issue of not seeing images is a major concern. It is true we can open
in a browser but why should we have to. This has been a major topic
over the last few years and doesn't look like it will ever be
implemented. My suggestion is allow the user to have a global setting to
accept images of not. Maybe even accept on the level of the address
book. After all, malicious code is not coming from out friends we trust.

Also right now there is a reply problem to HTML (not quoted) that is
annoying.

I use a program called Groupmail. It is not free and as Roelof says it
does not work with TB! but is stand alone. It does a great job of what
it does mass mailing. I lets you send everything bcc if you want and
lets you merge with all kinds of info.

You install the new version on top of the old version. It's not really
necessary to take any special precautions, though a back-up before
upgrading won't hurt a bit. ;-)

Speaking of George Bush Math :)

Donald Rumsfeld is giving the president his daily briefing. He
concludes by saying:

"Yesterday, 3 Brazilian soldiers were killed."

"OH NO!" the President exclaims. "That's terrible!"

His staff sits stunned at this display of emotion, nervously
watching as the President sits, head in hands.

You can do that already, just by assigning an AB field that you don't
use to this purpose.

My favourite example is the pager number, hardly anybody uses pagers
anymore. So assign that field to contain the language. And with the
%ABToBusPager macro you can query that setting.
So this macro
%Language='%ABToBusPager="NL"'%-
will give you the language setting you inserted in the AB and it'll
give you Dutch when there's no language set in the AB.

Same thing goes for greetings in defined languages.
Create the QTs GreetNL and GreetBR (note that only the last part of
the name differs and where you'd like your greeting, insert something
like this:
%QInclude('Greet%ABToBusPager="NL"')
Makes it easy to add languages, just add the appropriate QTs for your
new language.

The only problem with this is when you're sending the same mail to
multiple contacts, not all of them with the same preferred language.
TB picks the setting from the first recipient. No problem when you're
writing to Marck and me, but definitely a problem when you're writing
to me and Marck.

Hi Jenny,

I have the same problem as you (and Roelof).
What I have done is made templates for English an Dutch nationals and
assigned them to different groups. I have then made Templates with the
language macro setting the language in the template.

This also gives you the possibility to make language specific greeting and
quotes :)

I have also suggest a while ago and option in the address book to select

I'm answering both questions in one.
You can set the language for the spell checker with this macro:
%Language="NL"
You can substitute the NL (for Dutch) with AM or BR for American or
British English.
You can create quick templates (QT) that contain nothing else than
%Language="NL"%-
or
%Language="BR"%-
and assign a shortcut to these QTs.

Yes, you can.
Adding to the template %LANGUAGE='BR' will set the spelling check to
British English,
%LANGUAGE='FR' to French, %LANGUAGE='NL' to Dutch.

I think you can also set languages per group, but Roelof will know more
about that.

Delete (or move) the .tbi file from the folder with problem msgs

See whether that helps.

When TB finds a folder without a messages.tbi file, it creates a new
one. However, things like memos, flags, etc are stored in the .tbi
file, so if you're using flags, memos or parked messages, you should
merely move it and restore it after your experiment. Take care that TB

Never done something like that, but .tbb files are basically text
files with some odd codes to separate the messages, so a
straightforward search should help to find it.

What happens when you move an unreadable message to another folder?

What happens when you export one of them:

If the latter sequence still cannot be read, then you've got an easy

Nope, and if I set this option I get the same result, with the
difference that the mails for each sender is also grouped by date.

I have been wondering about this, and the only actual effect of this
option that I have found has been that if checked threads are sorted
by the newest mail in the thread (so that the thread with the newest
reply gets on the top). If not checked the threads are sorted by the
"starting" mail.
