I've installed Incredimail for my Kids to use and I've not had any problems
with Spyware etc. Incredimail is OK if you like pretty backgrounds, typewriter
sound effects while you're typing and so on, but it hasn't got anywhere near
the raw power of TB.

To have the complete options to manipulate mail and folders and have
the same content from several machines which could be moved anywhere
at any time does not seem possible with POP3. There would need to be
some sense of how you would let it be limited from normal operations.
Like some perspective on how often you'd want to do certain common
operations, reading, sending, etc. And it doesn't sound like it would
do.

Only if you could do with some subset of normal operation might you
try some of these options. None of these options you cited involve
operating on the same mailstore. So it won't be identical. It would
only be a question how similar content you might do with, or how much
extra time you might allot for making copies of the folders.

I guess NTFS cannot be changed to FAT32. But someone should have some
opinion on what is going on there. I'm using FAT32.

But it seems handy for you to provide these observations since there
may be others who wish to try the same things.

I don't think RIT is like those other software houses in that respect.

If you are a 1.xx series owner, then I think you would pay the upgrade
price for the 2.xx series.

I think just early 2.0 TB versions, such as the one you are running,
were like Betas. Or final "pre-releases". Maybe to try for a period.
Memory is hazy.

So the client you are running now is like a full glass of water, but

It may have some variations in routine.

So I guess most of us forgot the details on that release phase.

You had it right all along it was a version issue.

I doubt most people would think of that when you have a list of very
standardized fields or menu items.

Don't think so. You just have to start a Reply first.

That should help. You should find it there somewhere on the menu.

As for 3, as soon as you click on the new field displayed, all text

Some differing expectation. Hard to define expectations.

And most of the tabs are options. Like extra parameters.

AM> It can.

By that, I mean

string1
string2
string3

But as I understand now, that will forget about the _required_ string,
if I just place it one place.

TB would probably expect to find all of the strings at the same time.

AM> Ok. You need to do the following:

AM> Under the Rules Tab, define the string which must always match.
AM> Click the Add button and define one of the other strings that should
AM> also match.

This works very well.

But, say I don't click the Add button here to add the second string.
How does it think about the filter?

It seems to let most everything through. The first required string is
there in most cases.

Like, if I call the first string "_required_" to put on the Rule tab
and I number the alternate possible strings, string1, and string2,
say, then how does it make a conclusion in any case, or when neither
string1 nor string2 is present?

You already answered this. But if you say OR between the two Tabs on
the window, its feels odd.

It is another logic than just: string1 OR string2.

And I did get that when I added two strings in just the main Rule tab.
Like:
_required_
string1 | string2

But then the alternates don't create a list, one below the other.

I can kind of confirm. I certainly notice occasionally I ^* to open
all threads, and TB fails to respond to that. And it stays that way
till I close a window, or close TB. After which the keystroke starts
working again. I am not sure if that is a general bug, or fixed in
recent TB releases. Haven't tried enough to find out.

Most of the time it works fine. It is fairly easy not to remember to
give the message list focus too. So it often seems like nothing is
happening anyway.

Oh, I could answer your first question another way.

> On my system, shortcut * no longer opens all msgs in

It won't open all messages, because it is supposed to close all
messages (threads). :-)

I just use * to open all threads (or metaphorically
speaking, all the messages). ^ is a common symbol to abbreviate
holding down a Control key while pressing another key. Although
sometimes too brief in normal paragraphs.

If you click the rightmost big icon ? it brings up help.

The Quick Start says you can start by going to the Options menu, and
Add predefined folders. Right at the top of this window is my main
temp folder. And there are lots of others to choose from. You add
them by clicking the checkbox.

Once they are added, you can click one of the thunderbolt like icons
to remove their contents. This removes items from the left lower pane.
(If you click a particular temp folder on the right pane, in the files
list, and then click Empty Selected Folder, it won't just delete that
one, it will delete all the folder contents that are selected on the
left pane.)

There is also an icon to let you go to the selected folder in Windows
Explorer. So you don't have to check it out manually, if you wanted.

If you are talking about the TCP/IP modes listed under Network and
Administration, I don't think that relates to what you were
discussing. (I could be wrong)

What you are asking about is how to access a single mail base from
more than one machine. The only protocol that provides that is IMAP.
Anything else would have some issues.

If you still use POP, then you'd have to access the same files to have
the same effect. If you were away for a week, I guess you'd need to
copy all the mail base files and take them with you first. And when
you returned, you would copy all the mail base files back. I don't
think too many people do that. But you'd then have everything the
very same in both places.

I guess you want to try out all the options. And see what suits you
best. And if there seem some shortfalls in how it works out still,
you can pose them. With the speed of wired and wireless networks
these days, things are probably not too constricting. Just try
everything.

You were saying, how you had it, that outgoing mails were filtered to
the Sent folder. It sounds like where most people would want them
placed.

Just using the Palm Desktop software that syncs everything. They have
no reference to The Bat when you pick the mail app to sync. I just

My Palm is pretty old. So things may have changed in the meantime.

There is a Palm .ini file you need to edit. Probably somewhere in a

It does indeed. This directory does seem to be given in the MS-DOSified
form, of having each folder name compacted below 9 letters per folder

It appears I do have quite a few 0 KB bat temp files myself. A real

Odd effect change account name

2004-06-04 Thread Adam

I have a feeling this might sound too technical. But, I was just now
renaming an account. Just click on Properties, type a new name, and
shortly, a window comes on screen. It seems to be alerting to some
trouble. The window offers two pathnames, and declares that:

The system could not find the path specified

It gives the path to some specific folder on the account, first listed
under the old account name, and a second line, same path, but with the
new account name.

So, I could only acknowledge the window. And then came two more,
just like it, for two other mailboxes. One of them was the outbox.

Does that make any sense to anyone?

There are the different licenses listed at Cifnet. But, they don't
detail differences. Can you explain what differences there are? Or is
it somehow a shareware standard that is always understood, to say what
types of users a license accommodates?

Maybe then these buttons are only for the Edit window. As where I am
typing now. And don't do anything on the view message window. Thus, as
soon as you move to reply to a message about this topic, the ambiguity
vanishes. But while you are only reading messages, the ambiguity
returns. :-)

So, if that was true, these buttons have no function on the view

I was using the menu items for marking junk. But so far it hadn't had
a clear effect. It moved the messages I was on to a Junk mail folder.
But it did not act on later mail.

How can you tell what the score was given to an e-mail?

Let's say I go to the Bat Preferences/ Anti-Spam. At the top, it says
Anti-Spam plugins. And in the white box, it says BayesIt! Does this
mean it is currently doing spam processing?

Anti-spam

2004-06-01 Thread Adam
I am not using a recent TB version too much. But, it isn't clear, does
it have a complete solution against spam on board? It seems like you
have a couple menu entries. But you wonder, where is the intelligence?
It's not fighting spam already.

If you get a message like:
Cable_TV Filter Lets You Get It ALL_FOR_NOTHING, IF: b1hgq16776

Then I guess you can suggest that this is a spam message. And later,
how is one to know if you get a message from a cable company, that it
isn't a newsletter about cable TV?

Do anti-spam tools used in the Bat work with, or do they obsolesce
other anti-spam applications?

Sorry for the basic questions. But I'd get to get the facts straight
in my mind.

I didn't see a reference about running The Bat! in your batch file. So

I did note you set the path in your batch file. So in that case, if
you ran it. And you were at the command line, adding only this in a batch

  thebat.exe
  notepad.exe

And running it at the command line, should leave The Bat! application

Maybe the intention was a bit different as you were interpreting in

Huh? I'd have to, shrug here.

Take a batch file like this. File "batch-tb.bat":

 "C:\Program Files\The Bat!\thebat.exe"
 C:\WINNT\system32\notepad.exe

It will not launch Notepad, until I quit The Bat! myself.

If batch files were going to go on to the next command, before they
finished the last one, then you'd get a notice about Copying Files
Completed, when it only just started. And you could be deleting all
your files, before they get copied. It'd be chaos.

Scan folder properties

2004-05-10 Thread Adam

When you close out TB, it goes through some purging. A little menu on
screen, with fast text progress, and its just a flicker to your eye.
If you have an account that wasn't used for a while, or a backup, you
may not recall how you have anything set up. And it's best not to make
any change when you quit.

So, any idea how to search for unusual folder properties? Some might

I second that. My installation of POPFile is currently running at a
whisper short of 99% accuracy. It's quite a shock these days when I
actually get a spam message in my regular mail.

The great thing about POPFile is that you can set up any number of
categories - not just spam and ham - and use it for general mail
classification. It adds a custom header or a tag to the subject (or
both if you so desire) so it's a piece of cake to filter in The Bat -
or any other POP3 e-mail client for that matter.

As an experiment I've been running BayesIt and POPFile side-by-side
and POPFile always catches spams that BayesIt misses

The one downside is the POPFile, as its name suggests, can only handle
POP3 accounts. IMAP support is on the agenda but it isn't expected
anytime soon.

I'm having the same problem (I also have an MX500) I have found that

One thing that seems to be missing in the filters for virtual folders
is you can't filter on a string. I use POPFile to classify my mail
and after it was explained what virtual folders are (thanks all those
who replied) I thought I could set-up a VF for each of POPFile's
buckets. When I started looking into it I realized that you can't
filter on POPFile's classification header.

I know I could work around this, for example assigning a colour group
to each bucket and filtering on that or by using POPFile's subject
modification facility. I think, however, that being able to search
for a string in any of the headers or the body would be useful.

I've simply turned off "Confirmation" and "Ask What to Do Next" in the

Now all I've got to do is find a way of getting TB to automatically

Did you resolve the problem? Seemed like you identified the probable

I believe another way to try would be playing with View/Split Mode.

Click on Options/Preferences System tab. At the top is the location
where your mail is stored.

- Quit TB
- RAR (or ZIP, or whatever) your complete Mail directory
- start Registry Editor, go to HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Rit and export the

Perhaps the transmission process does not need to be told the time
when a message is sent; but instead it provides this information
itself.

So the need for this fact is not there. But a need suggested by a
means of transmission seems hardly a demand against what type of fields
data should be able to be filed under.

>> It is surely a bug to mislead the user.

TF> It's a feature request you have.

I hadn't really thought about it much.

>>>From URL:
>>> An error or defect in software or hardware that causes a program to malfunction.

>> This definition of bug is too concise.

TF> You are not in software engineering, are you?

Nope. But do standards dictate external appearance, menu displays,
keys to advance to new mail or other content?

Miguel cited an RFC. So to suggest that you really need to be abiding
certain rules in the storage of a message that should be sent out on
the internet later. But then, that is about what you need to consider
to have effective transmission once these electrons have taken flight
in other formations.

The same RFC said:

Some message systems may store messages in formats that
differ from the one specified in this standard. This specifica-
tion is intended strictly as a definition of what message content
format is to be passed BETWEEN hosts.

So, prior to its sending, I guess in an Outbox it could be in any
form. Not really. But, the main goal when you have a program handling
content is how to effectively manipulate the content, and display it
in a readable form. I guess the headers would be in the sense of the
complete e-mail source. I know some programs definitely seem to vary
from an ordinary message source display in a Sent folder. Have you
used Pegasus Mail? I think there are a few headers it doesn't bother
to represent.

But in general, you have internal data, and external representation.
Items in the Sent folder can be flagged, read, unread, coloured black
and blue. Would it be a bug or not a bug if a sent message could not be
coloured?

Or they could be Read, but not Unread again?

The subject of this thread isn't much of an example for where you
define what is a bug. I mean, mainly where you talk about something
malfunctioning, is where you may have a lot of chaos. A lot of users
complain. Effective work cannot be done. Or something thereabouts.
Not so much at some periphery of operation where data conveys some
impression most of the time which is very effective, and few
surprises. I can't really rate it on a scale of 1 to 10. But if you
can't trust a sort on a main aspect of content that may occur to you,
it seems annoying. TB shines at the sort.

Sorry, some of my comments might be a bit redundant.

Yup. But in the meantime, if you did it already, you could try these
keystrokes between searches. ALT W ALT M. Hit ENTER again.

I would also recommend they let you keep previous conditions in the

Yes. Right click on any Column Header (right above the message

Selected Items if it is not already there. Place it where it suits
you. The order of items is represented. Click OK.

Now you can use that column to sort messages by priority.

How come? As it is now, you could be looking for a message that was
sent December 27 say, and not find it unless you look in a date sorted
message list in the Sent folder under December 20. Now, maybe you
wouldn't find that happen to you even once in a blue moon. But that's
no reason to imply it doesn't happen for other users sometimes.

>>> So, I'm still going to submit the bug...
>>
>> I think yours is a feature request, not a bug.

M> Agree.

The Bat is very best at representing a lot of details from all the
delivery process. So it's easy to second-check if mail was from a
spammer, or a commercial source, or your friend. The received mail
has full information. Surely it is a bug if the sent mail is lacking
full information!

Now, maybe you reflect on the main field names they chose for Received
mail. They chose Created, and Received. A very sensible model for mail
that you received. For mail that was sent, the salient dated
information is the date and time the mail was sent. If I look up under
a date, I can't find when a message was sent. Instead, I am fooled by
a very similar date that makes me believe I have an accurate
impression of the listing.

The Sent folder has Two date fields: Saved, and Created. This Created
field should be listing the date and time when messages are sent. As
it stands, these fields are redundant meaning-wise. And they have the
same contents. A Saved date would make more sense for a text editor. A
Mailer should preserve the time mail was mailed. :-)

It is surely a bug to mislead the user.

To have more than one default option of where to return in your
message list is something I don't think any mail client has. It's
like, to have a default option, it is always the behaviour it does
anyway when you don't tell it anything particular. Now, The Bat! is an
intelligent animal, and it remembers things. So when it helps users in
this way, to return where you were last, many users are happy about that.

I think that to return to the top, you can type ALT Home.

Folders and rearranging

2003-12-12 Thread Adam

Have you ever noticed that if you try to add a new folder to an
account, the new folder is always added at the very bottom of the
account tree? So, let's say you are trying to add some categories in
which to stick the boxes. And you have maybe a hundred folders or
more. So you are there hanging around at the top of the tree, so you'd
like to place things in some better order. Or maybe later archiving,
or whatever. So I should take this bunch of folders, and package them up
in some new folder, shall we say, boxed tight. So that random parts
don't just hang around aimlessly.

Since you started at the top of the tree, now you need to get the
parts at the top, and move everything half a dozen screens to the very
bottom. I can say that I scratch my head at this point, see? Are
there other options, or anything I have missed?

This could really take a while, as is.

Another thing is, say on the other hand you take a fresh new Account.
It has automatically like 5 folders or something to start off with.
Try create a new folder. Now, if you try to move the original bunch,
Inbox, and so on, it seems to fail. When you drag one to the new
folder, the pointer does not change form as you would expect.

I am not sure that is how it should be interpreted. Normally it is in
menus where you might find underlined letters in commands. Although at
the moment, I can't seem to locate a Windows program that does display
drop-down menus with that style; just trying a few Windows programs on

I've never seen a case anyway where you would use a command denoted

Focus is normally advanced with the TAB key.

With a lot of checkboxes on a screen, you often can't advance to a

checkbox at some point.

Ok then. A little confusion.

I copied some adjacent threads from this one to a new folder. I copied
ALL, and then set to Unread. Copied all to another, and then set all
to Read. Then I copied all contents of both to a new folder.

For these threads, after using Kill Dupes, I got:
'Cosmetic Bug...' 3 of 6 total left unread.
'Received registration...' 2 of 3 left Unread.
'Max number of stored...' 4 of 6 left unread.

Since I had marked all these threads as Read, the Read messages should
be the only ones that remain. Try a similar experiment?

It is no whine, Paco! And you had the clue right below.

It is a nice feature. Wish my file manager had one.

PC>
PC> Using The Bat! 1.62q under Windows XP Home, version 2000

This is the reason. TB 1.62 does not support Menu Navigator under
Windows XP.

It has been foretold that the new TB v2.0 does support the Navigator
button. Prior to that, there was some problem with XP's big fancy
blocky buttons getting in the way.

Re: System for archiving

2003-09-08 Thread Adam

So my question is with these duplicates. The method I described I was
saying it could work effectively if TB was convinced to kill the
Unread messages. If it kills Read messages, then I will be left with
two batches of the same Unread messages. If it does cut out the
extraneous chaff, and delete not just *comparable* but *identical*
messages, then it will leave a complete archive. (Unless I'm
mistaken.) How does Kill Dupes work?

Am I right in what I said? Can it be convinced to do this?

One day here to experiment if there's some ideas.

The problem is that if you kill duplicates, it seems to kill all the
Read messages. Can others confirm?

If it did kill the right ones, and Maintenance features could be
scheduled, then the system would work pretty well.

System for archiving

2003-09-07 Thread Adam
One way to archive messages is if you have a filter to copy all
incoming messages destined for that folder, copy to another folder. If
you do this though, the archive will not indicate which messages were
read, and which not. No statuses. So, do you think that can be
achieved?

I was thinking, well a Read filter could copy messages to that same
destination folder. So then, you'd have all the messages. Plus a bunch
of duplicates. So maybe you could try going to that folder. And
clicking Kill Dupes.

I wonder if you have tried such a solution. Or have you tried some
other method to create an archive, and either succeeded or failed at
it?

No. But the 'Spell Checker' has an entire menu column devoted to it.
Right up there at the top of the screen.

As well, you can tap F4 for your function, which I'm sure you can do

Yep. Scratch that part. And try 5 times.

But, then, at this point, keyboard doesn't work.

You should probably send a bug report that the keyboard doesn't work

There is Peter Palmreuther's 'TB Log Analyzer'.

As for sorting the filters, it does seem possible to drag one filter in
the list elsewhere. The rules list doesn't seem to scroll though if you
drag above or below the rules window.

For making the same changes each time, you're probably looking for a

you'd be sending Cursor keys and TAB keys, to change and set the

If the Bat used the same settings you used last time, it would be more
confusing in the long run.

I'm late in my thread. But I only just noticed something. From some
impressions and Roelof's comment, it seemed like TB mustn't have
anything to do with it. Not running my own MTA.

But then again, quite randomly, I stumbled on a section in Account
Properties/ Templates/ New Message, which has a a few tick marks, for
Receipt Request, and Reading Confirmation. One was ticked.

Would that sound to be the prime reason? Or can such headers appear
spontaneously?

This section could probably be better documented. What I mean is, if
you enter Help Index, and follow 'Confirm Receipt' there isn't any
mention of this section. It's description is a little vague on
activation, but explanatory. It refers solely to some Pop-up, or
Options menu. But, I can't follow what it refers to for Pop-up.

About searching up RFC's, can you search for a header like that and
see if it is documented. When I searched at maybe www.rfc.net, it came
up with no results upon 'return-receipt-to'.

Yeah. I just supposed there's probably technical knowledge around here
to suggest what type of thing might happen. I certainly downloaded TB
successfully with IE before.

What type of event can a download manager keep track of that IE can't?
Does IE simply take what it receives from the web server? Or is it
doing some poor management or error correction, and failing to report
that?

Since it happened several times, error correction doesn't make much
sense though.
