Definitely - I check the log daily, and once in awhile something gets
tagged. It happens so rarely it isn't a problem, especially since I
can whitelist it if it was from a friend.

Are you sure it is a false positive, ie. a legitimate message being
falsely classified as spam? I'm only asking because I'm using K9 for
"years" (at least it feels like that, I've been using it on my old
Windows installation, and now on this one, which will probably be the
last, anyway:-) and never ever had a false positive.

So what? It works very well. I only replaced it by AntiSpamSniper

Thanks. I guess I should read release notes more thoroughly. I don't
depend on BayesIt for the most part, since K9 has proved to be
remarkably accurate (99.6% typically, with only a false positive every
few months), but I've used BayesIt in tandem, hoping it would catch
the few that do slip through. So far, it hasn't, so maybe it's time to

I even wrote sales (twice) and warned them that this link (and others

Ok... nice. Just really, really, nice

I started looking on Ritlabs.com and found that no
anti-spam software was really current...except for one.. "AGAVA" which
was... "Developed with the assistance of the Ritlabs company, the
designer of "The Bat!" High quality of spam filtering guaranteed!"

So, I go to http://www.antispamservant.com/bat_plugin.shtml for the
"Free" plugin as described, "The free version is fully functional
and does not contain any limitations." I downloaded and prepared to
install the plugin.

Upon installation I am prompted that, "Unregistered version of product
includes TMAgent software that displays advertisements when you search
Web. To disable the advertisements, please buy license and activate
your copy."

So, what I get for "free" is adware. Nice.

Dunno - but here's the site...

I don;t use X-Ray any more - got my own SMTP server arrangement so don't
need to switch servers when around and about.

and I guess you know the X-Ray support page:

I tried BayesIT again recently and found it getting things totally wrong -
it ended up 'refusing' to classify anything in one email account.

After taking advice from this list a while back - I am now using K9 with
absolutely wonderfully, accurate, consistent, and so easily configurable

Bayesit! Confusion

2006-07-13 Thread Bill McCarthy
Hello TB Users and Beta Lists,

I had been using Bayesit! for a few years with fairly good
success on my laptop. About two months ago, my laptop
developed a hardware problem and I switched to my wife's
desktop (XP Pro SP2).

I have been training Bayesit! from scratch and have had it
catch nothing :-(

Turning on logging, I discovered that Bayesit! appeared a
bit confused. From my log file:

C:\data\TheBat\Mail\bayesitbase\spamdict.bye
C:\data\TheBat\Mail\bayesitbase\nspamdict.bye
Spam frequency dictionary:
Error loading file. May be it is corrupted or lost.
Non-spam frequency dictionary:
Error loading file. May be it is corrupted or lost.
Dictionary didn't load. Continue in training mode...
No current recalculation session. Silent exiting...

There is, of course, no such "bayesitbase" subdirectory.
Looking at the Bayesit! configuration (under Basic filter's
options), I noticed that I had browsed to
"c:\data\TheBat\Mail\bayesit" for the working directory.
When I manually added the trailing backslash, the log file
showed me that it could now find both spamdict.bye and
nspamdict.bye.

That was just a few days ago and Bayesit! has still not
found any spam (I guess training is just starting now).

However, looking at the Information page is see:

Spam frequency dictionary:
C:\data\TheBat\Mail\bayesit\\base\spamdict.bye
Size: 1386 letters.
Capacity: 81940 words.
Non-spam frequency dictionary:
C:\data\TheBat\Mail\bayesit\\base\nspamdict.bye
Size: 13135 letters.
Capacity: 649383 words.
Current active dictionary:
Currently active dictionary contains 155617 words.
Status: OK

Please notice the '\\' in those filenames.

Anyone else seeing these problems?

I am currently running the most recent announced beta,
although I do not believe this is a beta issue - so I am
including both mailing lists.

I used to use it. I moved to Agvara ant think it (mostly) works
better.

I found that it took a **LOT** of mail to train it. I kept at least
1,000 spam and 1,000 ham messages around just to train it. I got it
to better than 80% without using a white or black list and I *NEVER*
got a false positive with it. Agvara gets about 95% of my spam but I
do have to go through the spam because I get the occasional false
positive with it.

So the end result is that it works, but is a more 'finiky'. But it is
also free

BayesIt - whitelist

2006-05-17 Thread Admin at AK
I am having a bit of trouble getting BayesIt sorted out

I have a whitelist into which I placed all Good email address but BayesIT
seems to have prepended each line with TEXT:

Does that mean it is looking in the body of the email for that?

In which case do I just change the TEXT: to say FROM: or what.

I can't find anything about the format of a whitelist ands what prefixes
can be at the start of a line.

Bayesit notices on startup after enabling encryption

2006-02-11 Thread Max
Hi all,

Today I upgraded to the latest version of TB! and enabled on-the-fly encryption.
Now when I start TB!, I am prompted to enter the OFTE password. After doing so,
I receive 2 warning notices related to Bayesit.

The first says: "It seems that you use encrypted The Bat! Please, provide the
minimal value from "Move to junk folder" and "delete letter" (see "Preferences >
Antispam" menu in The Bat!)"

The second says: "If you would like to change this value in future, delete the
key "spam threshold" in "advanced.ini" file, and this window will re-appear next
time you run The Bat!"

After clicking OK to each, TB starts as normal. The only thing I did differently
in the installation was to specify that TB should store my mail in My Documents
rather than its own directory.

Does anyone have any idea on what I need to do to get rid of these messages? My
searches have yielded nothing.

Thanks!

The only difference I have is my junk score is currently up to 15. I
had it down into the single digits for BayesIt I have been
sneaking it up, but slowly. Just one or two points a week.

Ahh, I get it now. My explanation of the behavior of the '~' file is,
I think, still correct. As to why you are not seeing any spam
filtering, if you your black and white lists are doing was much as you

As far as I can tell.

FileMon shows that Bayesit is accessing the file to read it but just
doesn't seem to write anything. But I don't know whether this file
stat.bin is the log file or not? Perhaps someone could let me know?

I did once come across an installation/upgrade problem in the past where if
a file doesn't exist BayesIt doesn't seem to be clever enough to create
it...so I'm wondering if this is the problem here.

Mike, I think we may be at crossed purposes here. :)

My filtering is working very well. I use whitelist and blacklist
extensively and this seems to be the best approach.

I just sometimes look at the stats for interest and was surprised to see
that Bayesit was reporting 'nil' spam! This got me thinking and that's when
digging deeper I noticed the apparent issue with the 'stat.bin' file?

Well I have never dug into it quite that deeply, but it sounds like
those files are only used for calculating stats, not for the actual
filtering, so their not being around should not cause a filter issue.

As to the '~' file, that is a common practice for naming temp files
that are temp backups for open files. For example word does that as
well. The '~' files are deleted when they are no longer needed ...

Well, for sure, but I've been running 'FileMon' and it seems to me that
BayesIt isn't working quite right. It seems as if it tries to open
~stat.bin as well as stat.bin. Unfortunately ~stat.bin doesn't exist. I
tried making a copy of stat.bin and renaming it to ~stat.bin but BayesIt
just deletes it at the end of the session.

If I remove both files then BayesIt doesn't recreate either, which I would
have expected it to do.

I can't look at the moment 'cuz I am currently testing out AGAVA. But
I seem to recall seeing stats when I did use it. There were 4 that I
remember looking at ... correctly filtered spam and ham, mis-filtered
for both as well. My goal was to keep ham classified as spam as close
to zero as possible. I think BayesIt was better than any of the other
filters I have tried in terms of not putting ham in the spam folder.

But I wasn't particularly 'religious' about checking the stats. I was

That gets it installed. You still have to train it with as much spam
and ham (i.e. good messages) as you can before it will start helping
you by classifying with any reliability.

Extract them to a random directory (doesn't matter much which). Let's
take \Program Files\Tbe Bat!\BayesIt\ (just because that's what I'm
using.)
Now via TB's menu:
  Options -> Preferences -> Protection\Anti SPAM -> Add
Browse to the location where you stored BayesIt
Configure BayesIt with the matching button and you're about done.

When you've already installed a previous version for BayesIt, just
close TB and copy the archive contents over the older version.

Yup. I've not had to use the white or black lists with K9 either. When
using BayesIt, the lists became unmanageable. And you can't resize the
dialog and why is it modal? Actually, thinking about it, there's
a lot of modal nonsense going on in TB. Grrr.

But, on a happy note, K9 is the dog's ;-)

And, for a flipside, I've found it great. As an example, one of my
accounts had 68 messages in it when I returned home tonight. One of
them was legitimate. All the rest was spam.
BayesIt and Bayes Spam Filter, working together, automatically deleted
62 messages. They let through the one legitimate one. One ended up in
the Junk folder, and four ended up in my inbox. The four in my inbox
were all very short messages, and an analysis of my logs shows that it
was Bayes Spam Filter that let them through - it's been running
alongside BayesIt for a while now, but seems to take longer to train.

In my experience, I've never seen something as easy and simple to set
up as BayesIT, or as quick to get working - I installed it a long time
ago, marked all my mail as ham and/or spam, and then started marking
mail that got through. After a week, it was incredibly rare to see
anything slip past.

They key seems to be the training - but BayesIt makes that very easy.
Sadly, it also doesn't make it very clear that you have to train it in
both ham and spam...

AOL that.

I've never gotten BayesIt to work, and I'm not the most
computer-illiterate person out there. When "c't Magazin" (renowned
German computer mag) tested several mail clients, TB among them, they
couldn't get it to work, either. Go figure.

I've been using K9 for about two year now and find it great. It's
tiny, very fast, and very reliable.

I haven't trained with ham yet, no, since it hasn't put "good" mails

nothing at all. As Roelof suggested, maybe I should give it a little

Bayesit or Bayes Filter

2005-08-20 Thread P.Johnson
Hello,

I recently reinstalled TB! and wanted to try the spam plugin, Bayesit.
This program is not working well at all; I "trained" it with over
3,000 spam messages, yet these are still routinely delivered into my
inbox with very few ending up in the junk folder. I am using the
default settings.

I know there have been problems with Bayesit in the past but hoped
these had been solved. I am thinking of switching to Bayes Filter,
which worked well for me until I upgraded to a higher TB! version.
Anyone have experience or suggestions for either of these programs?

If I didn't want to try built-in spam software, I would go back to K9
which worked very well and which I would recommend.

Thank you in advance,

It wasn't a problem here for any of the versions I tried in that
sequence, but that seems to be the way with these sorts of things.
Sorry I don't have a better answer for you other than to try either:

1.) running through one or more of the intervening updates and
see if there is something that needed to be 'tweeked' between
25 and 30 to make it work right.

2.) try one of the later builds to see if it was just a quirk
   of the 30 build.

It's a known bug in the .msi which wrapped .30. We've been testing
RL's fix on TBBETA--as v. 3.51--and when it's certain that no new bug
crept in while putting the Bayesit function back, Maxim has said that

Barry,

I was talking about Bayes Filter. There you should place it in the
Filters.dat file. There is a separate tab for all the regexp stuff.

My mistake, sorry.

I am running as admin on XP Pro SP2, anybody else come across this?

Did you give it any "non-spam" messages when you trained it? I made
that mistake when I first tried BayesIt. If you only give it spam,
then it had no idea what a "Good" message looks like, so everything
will look like spam to it. It needs at least as much "ham" as "spam"
for training.

Beyond that, go to OPtion, Preferences, Anti-spam and select Baysit

Try adjusting the Move message "threshold" to a higher number. You
might also play with the "Avg/Max/Min" scoring, although I am not sure
exactly how that is used (I use Avg, FWIW)

Yes: start to use BayesFilter. The newer and newer BayesIt always
comes out with errors. Our observation is that the errors are fixed in
the new versions, but you get new errors in return :) :(.

Give a try to BayesFilter and you will never go back to BayesIt :)).

K9, POPFile, Spambayes and what more products might be available, it's more a
matter of personal experiences and how you look at the product from a cosmetic
point of view. I agree with you that POPFile (using Perl, install file over
5MB) and Spambayes (using Python, install file over 4MB) are rather large
compared to the tiny install file of K9 (116KB).

From an installation point of view BayesIT and Bayes Filter ar easier as they
are just plug-ins but my experiences with the TB plug-ins are not very
positive...they make the behavior of TB sometimes very "strange" and
unpredictable. Since I stopped using plug-ins, I've far less problems with TB.

I've used K9, Spambayes and POPFile and my impression is that both Spambayes
and POPFile "learn" quicker than K9.but before we start a new string about
this...it's my personal observationso don't shoot me for that :-)

It's slow during mail retrieval, which is OK because it's doing lots
of "thinking" (pathetic fallacy?), but it also seems to do a lot of
database management throughout the day.

I really applaud the popfile project, and it's still the best catcher

ND> Aside from the fact that mails are put into a spam folder by
ND> bayesit, I can't find any other sign in the message. Is this so?

As far as I can tell, TB doesn't mark the message at all - which I
personally find quite disappointing.

Each anti-spam plug-in that The Bat! uses keeps its own separate logs,
which you can use. In the vase of BayesIt, the logs are here:
  \Documents and Settings\\Application Data\BayesIt\
The file name will be bayesit.log.
(I'm assuming Windows 2000/XP, by the way - no idea where it is on
other platforms, but the filename will be the same and you could
search on it...)

I've used BayesIt for about a year now, I think, and it's almost
flawless. I was getting only a couple of mails a day pass it by, and
those were generally "blank" mails - no text to analyse means that
BayesIt is somewhat hamstrung!

Because of those blank emails, I added the Bayes Filter Plugin as a
second plugin. You can find that here: http://www.lkcc.org/achim
It's good, and I chose it because unlike BayesIt (as far as I know),
it also does RBL lookups - with which I hope to catch those blank
emails. I've had to drop my spam filtering options to use the Minimal
score for filtering, and I now see more spam per day - but the figure
is going down as I train Bayes Filter Plugin, so I'm happy to accept
this for a while.

I mention the second plugin because it shows the real problem with
"spam logs" in The Bat! - many people will tell you where BayesIt's
logs are, as I just have. And I can also find the Bayes Filter
Plugin's own logs. But I'll have to read BOTH sets of logs to figure
out what's going on definitively.

Actually, I won't. I can read The Bat's logs if I like. CTRL+SHIFT+A
will show me the logs for the account I'm in, and in there you'll see
when The Bat! has had a message reported as spam by a plugin. It'll be
on a line starting with the words FILTER (after the date and time,of
course) - but you'll probably have to scroll far to the right to
actually see if it's the Junk Mail filters or one of your own filters.

With just the BayesIt plugin, it won't be so bad for yourself. You can
read just the bayesit.log file, and that'll help you. It's certainly
going to be much easier than reading The Bat!'s own logs...
But I have two plugins. Each one might report a different score, and
that makes it difficult to spot exactly what's going on... What was
the score reported by the plugin APIs?
Remember, with morethan one plugin, you have three possibilities: Use
the maximum score, the average or the minimal. So if one plugin
reports a score of 99 and one reports a score of 0, this is what those
settings would report:
Maximal: 99
    Average: ~50
Minimal: 0
If BayesIt reported 99, and I'm using Minimal or Average (with a
threshold of over 50), then I'd see in the BayesIt logs that it was
spam but not realise that The Bat! never thought it was spam. This can
get very confusing very quickly. Especially as, at the end of the day,
what the plugin reports is ONLY important if oyu have just one plugin.
Now, I'll grant you most people only have one plugin, but I like
defence in depth and I think that multiple plugins is a good idea.
It's just very badly supported by The Bat!'s logging mechanism.

The Bat!'s log reader is a bit basic. I'd really like to see a much
better log tool - one which allows me to see all log entries across
all accounts, and also to filter based on account, action
(fetch/send/filter etc) and to search for specific text (so that I can
check my logs for messages from specific addresses, to see if a rule
inadvertantly filtered it) and so forth.

I'm not in a hurry to get such a feature, but in my opinion The Bat!'s
logs will be unusable until such a feature arrives.

As to your original question, I have no problem with the Plugins
marking the message. But I'd rather that the actual problem was dealt
with: decent logging. If I had good logs, I wouldn't even think to
check the headers of the message to see what had happened... ;-)

I'd like to know this also. How to directly delete an email from pop server
when bayesit detect it as spam. But it must be an email with score higher than
x%.

There is an option to delete the email if the score is higher than x%. Does
that deletes the email after downloaded the email or directly on the server?

Also, how to know the score of each emails receive by bayesit plugin?

2005-04-20 Thread Nick Dutton
Hello,

I'm going through one of my irregular explorations of anti-SPAM
technology, as popfile just seems to grind slower and slower. Although
it must be said that it's almost perfect in terms of accuracy.

One of the things that I really like about popfile is that I can get
TB to delete spam from the server once identified.

Aside from the fact that mails are put into a spam folder by bayesit,
I can't find any other sign in the message. Is this so?
