Nope. Just edit the MakeMeAdmin.cmd file and change one of the values

It's not really a bug. It's a security feature of the operating

But, if something you encounter turns out to be a hitherto unspotted

E> But I've certainly got a lot of filters.

The .srx files were the files created when you created a filter in
Version 2.
The .srb files are created in Version 3.

During testing of Version 3, ie. late betas of Version 2, the New
File System was introduced and some people tried using it. When you
used the New File System in these betas, The Bat! looked at your .srx
files and used them to create .srb files. These translations did not
always work very well, so when you went to install a newer beta or
Version 3 it was best practice to delete all your old .srb files so
new ones would be created.

In your case if you didn't have any .srb files then you probably never
played with the New File System in the betas and thus would have
never created them.

***Warning*** Take the following as my opinion and not fact.

My guess is that once you are completely moved over to Version 3 and
everything is working alright you could then delete your .srx files,
but this is only speculation on my part and awaits confirmation from
higher authority.

Hope I've got this right.

Then you have no problem whatsoever. That just means that, so far, you
have not run a version containing the New Filter System or a prototype
of the New Filter System.

E> But I've certainly got a lot of filters.

You can safely install v. 3.01. because The Bat! will convert all your
filters in the Old Filter System, which you have in v. 2.12.00, to the
New Filter System.

Be sure to save your registration key for v. 2.12.00 in a file outside
the Bat's directory. If you saved the Install zip for v. 2.12.00, keep
it also in a place outside the Bat's directory. Do a good back-up of
your current Bat, also.

Then install v. 3.01.33 (the October 13 release) directly over v.
2.12.00. My advice is to choose Complete in the .msi installation
process. This installer does everything automatically.

After you re-launch The Bat! after installation, it might be a good
idea to find some time to look at each of your newly converted filters
in Account/Sorting Office-Filters. Just to be sure they still say what
you wanted them to.

Place to get the download:

http://www.ritlabs.com/en/products/thebat/download.php

It will come to you on a 30-day evaluation period.

Please ask again here for anything else you want to know. I am happy
to try to answer your questions.

Yes. Confirmed by Allie and admitted to by Thomas on the thread.
Except for my confusing typo, of course.

E> And just /how/ does doing it help one to carry the filters

The Bat! converts the filters automatically during the installation
from the format of the Old Filter System to the format of the New
Filter System.

If there were already a .srb file in the directory, The Bat! might
(has sometimes) fail to overwrite it.

If there is no .srb file in the directory, The Bat! will create one
and put the filters into it.

Now--"how"--it does that is a mystery to me and may be a programming
secret. :)

Sorry. Should have written .srb and .srx

MB>>This has helped some people carry their filters across more easily.

scc> Thanks, Mary! Please elaborate re the file re-naming. What is a
scc> .sbr file?

That's .srb file. I made a dyslexic typo. Very bad thing when
discussing file extensions. My sincere apologies.

A .srb file is a file created to store filters. You may not find one
in your The Bat!/MAIL/"account name" (where "account name" is the name
of your particular account in The Bat!). If you don't, it is that the
version you are running did not create it, and so you should just
ignore this part of my advice.

I simply deleted mine. The installation procedure created a new file
with my converted filters in it.

But others here, when I posted this advice in an earlier thread, said
that it was safer to re-name.

scc> What does it hold or do?

See above. As I understand it, The Bat! creates this file
automatically to contain filters.

scc> Do I rename the file extension, the main part of the name, or
scc> both? ...

I should think that the file extension renaming would be sufficient,
As I said, it's a substitute for deletion--a sort of extra back-up.

The Bat! will create a new .SRB

scc> Do the files then get renamed back to what they were after
scc> installation?

No, a new file will be created.

And after you've had a look at your filters in the New Filter System
in the Sorting Office/Filters and they are reasonably okay, then you
may safely just delete the renamed file. Or archive it somewhere else,
if you tend to be as paranoid as I am about this sort of thing.

The path to mine in the account that I use for the TB! mailing lists
is:

C:/Program Files/The Bat!/MAIL/m.bull/ACCOUNT.SRB

That's for my m.bull Account.

I hope this helps. You might want to let it sit on the tbudl list
overnight before doing anything, just in case some more knowledgeable
person finds something to correct in what I'm saying.

the installer defaults to that (it doesn't seem to check the

C:/Program Files/Accessories/System Tools/Security Center

I did turn off my Sygate Firewall (disabled the Xp/Sp2 one from the
beginning).

Left my AV running.

Closed The Bat! after back-up.

Save your application installation file for the one you are running
now and save your registration number, just in case you want to
abandon v. 3.0.1. (But I don't think you will want to.)

Look in The Bat! directory, and under each account, re-name the .sbr
files. NOT--repeat--NOT the .sbx files.

This has helped some people carry their filters across more easily.

Save the 3.0.1 zip file. That way you have it, if you start flipping
back and forth between versions.

Choose a Complete Install and do not first Uninstall your old The Bat!

The .msi (Microsoft Installer) which comes with the file will do that
for you automatically when you choose Complete Install.

That's the best advice I have to give, gleaned from having been a beta
tester over the past few weeks.

Don't you also want to turn off any firewalls and AV applications before
installing the upgrade? If so, how does one turn off the firewall that
comes with SP2?

Well some people seemed to have problems with filters transferring -
but I have a number of what I think are complicated filters that send
auto-replies, re-format emails and re-send etc - and I had no problems
whatsoever.

I just did a full backup. Closed TB. Double-clicked the .msi file and
there I was - all working.

Moving to version 3

2004-10-13 Thread Eric
Dear TBUDL members,

In the light of recent comments on this list, I've decided
to risk buying and moving to version 3, home edition.

In the flood of messages, I suspect there has been some
advice on how to upgrade - and what things will need
changing (such as filters?).

I assume I should do a tools|backup, standard with all options
chosen, then close The Bat!, and double click on the Windows
Installer Package downloaded as thebat_home.msi.

Anything else I need to know/do? Please do state what
ought to be the obvious!

Thanks in advance,
