When using IMAP, basic filtering (moving messages, auto-forwarding, marking as read, flagging, ) is often performed on the server. Each service provider has a different interface to filters. If, based on your email, you're using GMX, they have documentation about how their filters work at https://support.gmx.com/email/filter-rules/index.html#breadcrumb_help_email_filter-rules_about If you're using a different provider, you'll need to check their help pages for details. The advantage of moving them to the server is that all your clients--from multiple copies of The Bat! on different machines to your mobile phone--will see the same messages in the same folders. -- Christopher Warrington Current version is 8.0.18 | 'Using TBUDL' information: http://www.silverstones.com/thebat/TBUDLInfo.html

Wikipedia tells us (amongst other things) that: When using POP, clients typically connect to the e-mail server briefly, only as long as it takes to download new messages. When using IMAP4, clients often stay connected as long as the user interface is active and download message content on demand. For users with many or large messages, this IMAP4 usage pattern can result in faster response times. and that: IMAP4 clients need to maintain a TCP/IP connection to the IMAP server in order to be notified of the arrival of new mail. Has anyone else experienced this? I guess I could TH use POP in checking gmail. Let me take a stab in the dark. This sounds like a problem that I had with a POP3 account many years ago. As part of the login process, one particular provider was sending a DNS request. Due to problems (or fears) about ?BackOrifice?, the firewall had been set to block port 53 by default. The result looked very much like a continuous loop (TheBat attempted to fetch email from that provider and hung). After reading the firewall logs (and setting it to report all denied traffic, heh-heh-heh), the solution was to open port 53 for that provider's IP address in combination with TheBat's MD5. Hi, Is there an email client anyone can recommend that plays nice with IMAP? Please don't say Outlook. Thunderbird? Eudora? Anything? I've never had any IMAP problems with Thunderbird. On the other hand, it only provides rather basic functions, so the changeover shock from TheBat is quite extensive. ;-) Mulberry comes to mind when talking about IMAP. To my knowledge it was the first program that fully implemented almost all nuances of the IMAP protocol. This may still hold, but so does the quirky interface and in recent time there have been no signs of developement to speak of. The existing user base seems to be happy with the way it is, and there is no drive to improve the program in any way. -- Mit freundlichem Gruß Alto Speckhardt mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] pgpJRCxvpEJDK.pgp Description: PGP signature Current version is 4.0.24.0 | 'Using TBUDL' information: http://www.silverstones.com/thebat/TBUDLInfo.html

Hi, [IMAP] Can I still use TB! as the client. That depends on your level of tolerance. If you have a feasable alternative, take it. but I do remember a few threads on this list years ago discussing its IMAP limitations. And when I say a few years ago it may of been 4 or 5 years ago. Has Ritlabs dealt with these issues? No, not in the least. Improvements have been promised on various occasions but have never materialized. The currently running promise is for v4.1, which of course needs an update fee. If you want to use IMAP with TheBat I recommend the final v3 version. If TheBat happens to like your provider's servers you may be more or less ok with it. Re: IMAP problems
Hello Johannes, A reminder of what Johannes Rußek typed on: Friday, September 14, 2007 at 16:37:34 GMT +0200 JR Also, one of our TB! users has a problem that i found in the bugtracker, JR sometimes her TB! just wouldn't load the body of a message. If she JR clicks on the message, the place where the message should show up is JR just grey. If she restarts TB! though, the message shows up fine. JR Any hints on that? This is definitely a recurring problem with IMAP at the moment. Sometimes killing stuck processes in the connection center works. Sometimes using Purge and Compress works. Sometimes using Refresh works and sometimes using Clear Cache Now works. But more often than not closing TB! and restarting is what lets you see your message. -- Best regards, Stuartmailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] Using The Bat! v3.99.24 On Windows XP 5.1 Build #2600 Current version is 3.99.24 | 'Using TBUDL' information: http://www.silverstones.com/thebat/TBUDLInfo.html
Re: IMAP problems
Hello Johannes, A reminder of what Johannes Rußek typed on: Friday, September 14, 2007 at 16:37:34 GMT +0200 JR I have a few more questions (besides the one I already posted, help is JR still really, really appreciated) about IMAP. JR first of all, I can't figure out how to find deleted (not purged) JR messages, even though the settings are that tb wouldn't move them to the JR trash folder but rather flag them as being deleted. how do I find them? JR (I also clicked on browse deleted messages, nothing showed up). For this I use the Trash folder, so I'm not sure how to find Marked for Deletion messages. -- Best regards, Stuartmailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] Using The Bat! v3.99.24 On Windows XP 5.1 Build #2600 Current version is 3.99.24 | 'Using TBUDL' information: http://www.silverstones.com/thebat/TBUDLInfo.html
Re: IMAP problems
This is definitely a recurring problem with IMAP at the moment. Sometimes killing stuck processes in the connection center works. Sometimes using Purge and Compress works. Sometimes using Refresh works and sometimes using Clear Cache Now works. But more often than not closing TB! and restarting is what lets you see your message. so the suggested method is actually restarting The Bat.. what puzzles me here is that we installed the exact same version on a different machine for a different user, who's also using the almost same layout on the server, and he doesn't have any problems at all. When I delete a file, it just turns red and sits there. No amount of synchronizing or double-deleting will make it disappear, it is like the living-dead, it can't be killed! What do I need to do make IMAP messages go away via TheBat!, rather than logging on to the web interface?
