If you have only TB! installed, then you can delete the subkey

HKCU/Software/rit

If you have SecureBat! installed as well, then you'd have to delete the
subkey:

HKCU/Software/rit/The Bat!

since the SecureBat! registry entries are stored under:

HKCU/Software/rit/SecureBat!

TB! registry entries reside in only one location which makes it easy to
manually uninstall TB! completely.

I was recently warned that the version on the CD is buggy. Download
the fixed version (freeware!) from:

http://www.microsoft.com/ntworkstation/downloads/PowerToys/Networking/NTTweakUI.asp

Even though it says "NT", it is actually the version that also works
under Win98.

It's a non-official utility by MS itself, part of the PowerToys. For
Windows 98 you will find it somewhere on the installation CD, for 95
it is somewhere on their downloads page (I have forgotten where, but
their search function is not bad). For 2000 and ME I you will find it
on their site, maybe even on the CD's.

Very handy, very good and absolutely essential for a lot of options
you can also reach through registry editing.

Another good utility (at least for 95) is something called
W95gray.exe, which I can't find anymore on their page.

Sounds like a buggy installation to me - it's failing to add The Bat! to the
add/remove list. Often (but not always) you can find the actual uninstall
program in the program's folder.

Hmm. Look for a program called TBat_DEL.exe in your Windows directory
(C:\WINNT\, C:\WINDOWS or something like that) and run it. This is
what uninstalling via the Windows uninstall menu would do.

Why not?

But back to topic, since Daf said TB! is not in his Add/Remove, here
is the other way:

1. Close TB!

2. Delete the folder you installed TB! to

3. Open the programme regedit.exe - or the appropriate registry
editing place on your machine - and search for the key tree "RIT"

4. Delete the whole tree

5. For good measure you can now search for all places TB! is coming up
(i.e. associations) and delete them

6. To get rid of everything connected to TB! you now only have to
delete all shortcuts to TB! you or the installer created

On my WinME machine, TB! is in Add/Remove Programs. I like TB! so much
though, I don't think I'll be using the uninstaller anytime soon.

Since the only people with a missing Add/Remove entry for TB! seem to be

The compacting helped a lot, though as you said, not 100%.

Sorry if I'm stating the obvious: have you compress the folders in
OE before trying to import them into TB?

I left OE a couple of months ago, and had problem importing my mail
to any other email programs I tried at the time (TB, Becky, and
Eudora), and further investigation lead me to believe that OE is
responsible for most of the problems. Compressing them first would
eliminate some, though not all, of the problems. For those
ill-converted messages, I went back to OE, saved them as individual
.eml files, rename them to .msg files, and imported them as such
(they are in fact the same).

If there are too many messages requiring such treatment in a folder,
there's a freeware utility called DBXtract.exe which would extract
all messages from a OE4/5 folder and save them as individual .eml
files, so you don't have to do it one by one in OE. I lost the link
to the original web site, but it should be easy to find with a
search engine.

Sometimes even individual .eml files won't import properly, however,
and examining them (plain text files) with an editor would show
there's garbage data in it. There's nothing I could do but clean it
myself (if it's important) or discard it.

Messages imported from OE won't have the correct Received Date/Time.
It's because OE doesn't track the received time the way TB does (TB
track the date/time it receives messages, OE use the date/time your
server receive them). If you care (some people use mainly the
Created Time, and don't care about Received Time), you'll have to
export them from TB, correct them with an editor (preferably with an
advanced editor with macro ability), and re-import them.

Those are probably good precautions to use regardless of the program
you're using.

That's a bit of an understatement. :)

Stick around, I think you'll like this one.

I was surprised to find the instructions were not in the FAQ.
Especially since there are instructions for a couple of other
programs. Oh well, what can you do?

But back to OE: If I remember correctly, you have to export your OE
messages into some neutral format (Unix mailbox or something) and then
import this into TB.

How did you try importing?

Right, that's the only problem I have with OE. I've used it for years
and so far I've been lucky, and of course I'm careful and do bi-weekly
backups of all my mail folders to an RW, so I can always get my mail
back.
But the security concerns are what made me look around for other
choices. You all seem to be very protective of the Bat ;)

And after using a program for years it takes a while to warm up to a
new one .

My main problem with the Bat at this point is that my OE messages
don't transfer over very well.

You can just run this command from the command line (Start -> Run)

regedit /D HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\RIT

Please note, I haven't tried it, I don't want to delete my TB reg
entries. :) But it should work.

Select in the control panel the setting that OE is the default email
program and click on any link to write a mail. very likely the thing
will tell you its not the default emailer and do you want to make it
that.

Select yes and be the target of all the MS macro virus/trojan and
other attacks (g)

For me using the bat isnt only that I like it better, its that its
much more secure that the microsoft programs. Added its extreemly
likely to lose address book and mail if you get a windows crash or at
least cost you much more for a computer shop to recover old mail etc.

Not that I know of, many people on the list have tens of thousands of
messages stored in a single folder without problems. I find anything
above about 500 slows down a folder when you first open it but I am
running Windows 2000 on a 166MHz so everything is sloow!

Fair enough. I hope you find your experience with TB to be a good
one.

Nope, there doesn't appear to be any maximum size limit. However,
after you get about 5000+ messages in a single folder, it tends to
slow down certain operations. You'll really only notice this when you
do purge/compress operations. And even this is not significant if you
don't remove messages from these folders.

Good luck!

I just got this part changed to OE again. Got the following
path from a newsgroup and it worked.

"C:\Program Files\Outlook Express\MSIMN.EXE" /eml:%1

Just thought I'd post it in case someone else ever needs
to solve this.

Now that I know how to do this I'm just going to check
out The Bat a little more and see which program works better
for me.
I just don't like it when things get changed on my computer
without me choosing to or knowing how to reverse the
change.

I feel more comfortable trying The Bat now.
OE5 never gave me any problems so far, but I don't like
the security problems associated with it.

Another question: Is there a limit on the folder sizes for
the Bat? I get a lot of messages and keep many of them, too,
so things add up pretty fast.

Thanks,

Hi,

this got the same results I had with the first option: OE5 opens up,
but not the selected .eml file.

Thanks anyhow! I hope to find a solution somehow.

Tried this and when I click 'ok' I get:the specified program could not be
found.
Make sure the filename and path are correct (and yes, msim *is* where it's
supposed to be).

Thanks for the try.

This will happen if you export as msg format, your only other export
option is Unix which will save all the messages to one big file.

I think the only way to do what you want is to save each message
separately.

Re: Uninstall problem

2000-09-17 Thread David Tod Sigafoos

Hello Susanne,

I would like to suggest that you try to stick with TB. Although I
don't know what specific problems you are having I do believe that the
majority of them can be worked out.

I too am new to TB after using Eudora since it came out. There are
some methods to the madness :-) Some of the differences are
refreshing and some are irritating. But my guess is that the good
will outweigh the bad.

As for the Uninstall problem Marck has given you a good process. It
should work. I wouldn't worry too much about the 'lint' left in the
registry. Although it isn't a good design practice many many routines
do that

Well, hope that you keep trying TB. It is the best that I have found.

Can I export all the messages from one folder onto a RW disk, where
the message subject is the file name? I tried this yesterday and all
the messages were saved with a number as the file name.

And how do you read your newsgroups with the Bat? Do I need a
separate newsgroup reader?

Try to put "%1" behind the program file (C:\Program Files\Outlook
Express\msimn.exe "%1").

I havent tried that, though.

Here is a solution posted recently by Leif Gregory:

- -8<-

Unfortunately, this is a problem not with The Bat!, but with OE. When
you install OE it asserts its association with .EML files. When you
install The Bat!, it also asserts its association with .EML files.
This is the normal way of Windows. New software associates itself with
the filetypes it deals with.

The problem is that OE does not detect that it has lost the
association, and therefore never tries to reassert those associations.

For instance, if you load IE5, it asserts associations with .htm,
.html etc. When you then later install, for instance, Netscape, then
Netscape takes over those associations. However, in this case,
whenever you remove Netscape, and begin using IE again, it detects the
loss of associations and asks if you would like to make IE the default
browser again (which re-associates the filetypes.) OE doesn't do
this, and I have no idea why. I guess they figure that they are the
only game in town and nobody else would use the .EML extension.

You might try this.

- - Open a folder on your hard drive.
- - Select View then Folder Properties from the menu bar.
- - Choose the File Types tab.
- - Scroll down until you see Internet E-mail Message
- - Click it once, then hit the Edit button.
- - In the Actions box, select Open, then click the Edit button
- - Use the Browse button to locate the OE executable, then click OK
- - Click OK again, and again, and again

Thanks for the quick reply!

I may try reinstalling. Had problems importing my OE5 messages.
A lot of them came through without any subject line, were cut
off halfway or were completely empty. Is this a common problem?

Also, I was missing a 'Save as' feature where you can save your
messages with the subject line as the file name, not just a number.

I'm definitely not experienced enough to change anything in the registry!
So, yes, I'd be grateful if you could supply the above mentioned file.

Just delete "The Bat!" folder, this will leave some registry entries
but that will not cause a problem.

Open Windows Explorer, find a *.eml file, Shift then Right Click,
select Open With, when the dialogue appears select C:\Program
Files\Outlook Express\msimn.exe, also tick the box which says "Always
open With".

I would not recommend returning to OE5, using it leaves you open to
many security exploits.

Re: Uninstall problem

Hello Susanne,

On Sunday, September 17, 2000 at 12:40:30 GMT -0700 (which was 12:40 PM
where I live) witnesses say Susanne typed:

It's too bad things didn't work out for you.

You can just delete the The bat! folder and remove the registry key

[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\RIT]

If you don't feel comfortable diving into your registry, I can supply
you with a one line batch file that will do the job for you.

Several people have asked this, perhaps it should go into the FAQ?
Unfortunately, I never pay attention to the answer for this
question. Sorry.

Open Windows Explorer, find a *.msg file, Shift then Right Click,
select Open With, when the dialogue appears select C:\Program
Files\Outlook Express\msimn.exe, also tick the box which says "Always
open With".

Repeat for *.eml

Here is a cut and paste of the last answer I sent to someone on this,
and they said it worked for them.

**

- Open a folder on your hard drive.
- Select View then Folder Properties from the menu bar.
- Choose the File Types tab.
- Scroll down until you see Internet E-mail Message
- Click it once, then hit the Edit button.
- In the Actions box, select Open, then click the Edit button
- Use the Browse button to locate the OE executable, then click OK
- Click OK again, and again, and again
**

Cheers,
Leif Gregory
