It does work. I've had mine set to 80K for a long time now. I get a
notification message that has a link to the specific mailbox entry, that
takes me to the Connection Centre so that I can read it, download it, or
delete it. I often receive multi-megabyte attachments and it has really
helped me manage them. Here's the first paragraph of the notification
message:

A message with the size exceeding 80 K bytes limit has arrived to your address -
the message number on the server is 1.
Please take care of it by yourself

If I get multiple attachments in a single pass, I can go direct to the
"Check mail on server > All messages" from the menu, and select all of
them to be downloaded (or just deleted if they are spam) at once. It makes
life much simpler by letting me choose when to deal with lengthy downloads
 or low disk space.

In recent times, it has been the rule, not to send Attachments over
1,44 Mb (Floppy Size). Now anything grew bigger (DSL) and i regularly
get Mails with 6,10,15 Mb Size. This should be no problem with DSL
Internet Access.

There are several Freeware Tools like PostBoxInspektor (it is included
in The Bat! you have to do CTRL-F2 or Shift-CTRL-F2) make it possible
to solve that problem without help of the Provider.
If you log in with PostBoxInspektor, only the Headers of the Mail and
Data like Size are polled and you can select the Mail and delete it
from the Server without downloading it...

Hope this helps, maybe you want to have a look at this feature?

People are infatuated with pretty pictures, especially moving

In the last few weeks 2 friends of mine have had their mailbox full

to delete all emails so they could resume using their email.

They are real POP or IMAP mailboxes. They just forward to another

works just fine.

Really? I am able to use common filters, rather than putting them

Also, I thought that if you filter to an account's inbox the

Not necessarily. In addition to ISP email addresses, I own two
domain names that I use for email and incoming mail for any
username at either of those domains is all routed to one POP
mailbox.

My solution is for one account in TB to download all mail from the
POP mailbox for my two domains. Incoming mail filters direct the
messages to folders in the relevant TB accounts. This means
replies are from the correct account. It also sounds more
efficient to filter the mail just once.

Selective download filter for each account that reads:

Recipient is [EMAIL PROTECTED]

The others will be left in the box to be collected by the other
accounts.

I am confused when you say the other accounts aren't "checkable".
This would mean you couldn't really send from that address either.

Another way to handle your desire to keep account a hidden is to make
a reply template that checks the recipient address (a, b, or c) and
replies from the appropriate account. Just add "%ACCOUNT="a, b, or c"
in the reply template.

Selective Download Filters

2007-08-01 Thread Chris W .

Is there anyway to use a selective download filter to select only
those messages that I want downloaded. I can only see a way to select
messages NOT to download.

Or, perhaps there is a better way to do what I want to do...

I have one real account [EMAIL PROTECTED] I have two other account [EMAIL
PROTECTED] and
[EMAIL PROTECTED] Neither [EMAIL PROTECTED] nor [EMAIL PROTECTED] have
mailboxes that are checkable
on a server somewhere; both are forwarded to [EMAIL PROTECTED] However, I don't
want people to know the the message has been forwarded to [EMAIL PROTECTED] So,
I though that I'd create three accounts and use selective download
filters to ignore the [EMAIL PROTECTED] and [EMAIL PROTECTED] messages when
checking as
[EMAIL PROTECTED] and select the appropriate messages for the other two
accounts. At the moment, I have incoming filters for [EMAIL PROTECTED] the move
the messages to the correct account. However, I have to write my
[EMAIL PROTECTED] and [EMAIL PROTECTED] incoming filters in [EMAIL PROTECTED]
Confused yet? I am.

I just see I had an error in my last mail. Not the "read" but the
"receive" flag is unchecked! Is it really the "read" flag that get's
deactivated when you check dispatcher?

Here the "delete" flag is still active for the matching messages...so
when activating the dispatching process the message is not received but
deleted on the server. Don't know why your messages stays on the
server even though the delete flag is (or at least should be) still
active...?

> And, I still can not select for a gross size and delete them.

Agreed, this option is still missing. So far the selective download
works only for word-matching. Why there is no option for size
selecting is beyond my knowledge.

yes. OK. I made a test; subject contains xyzzy then KILL.

but, this is seemingly useless in that
the offending message remains on server (forever)

also noted, as said before, the statistics tab never indicates if the
filter was tried. All remains a zero.

I was able to see that (using dispatcher window) that the Read became
unchecked.

And as I said, that particular test message is still on my server
having been neither D/L'd not deleted by the dispatcher. So, in any
case, I still have to manually deal with a server-side message that I
do not want not like.

And, I still can not select for a gross size and delete them. I see,
on my server right now, ten or eleven half-meg fido pictures from nice
people who can not slenderize their mega-pixel shots of their lovable
dogs . then ship them as attachments to a list I am (was) on.

So, IMHO , Selective Download is pointless in that she has no teeth
and can only wave noodles at server-side emails rather than a fully
charged Wand backed by a book with excellent spells therein.

Maybe I misunderstand, but did any of the mails contain "qwerty" ?
Only then would the read flag be unchecked in dispatcher. So I think
your result is correct: none of the mails was filtered (why "tested"
is not incremented I don't know).

An example maybe says more: I have a selective download filter
"Subject contains any of [some typical spam words]" with action
"kill". So if any mail contains one of those words its read flag is
deactivated in dispatcher by default. Works 100% here. No more
"enlarge your..."-mails here ;-)

The penny has finally dropped for me with that one, too.

Does the server keep both copies, or delete one because they

I have The Bat! set to keep email on the server for a number of days.
And I assume that since I'm having the email of both of us sent to one
fastmail.fm account, that the fastmail.fm must be getting two copies
of any email sent to both of us (though i don't know that for sure,
and even though the fastmail.fm inbox doesn't show it when I check it
through the browser, it seems to make sense that there are two copies
of the email). And hence, we're both able to download it.

I should experiment and see what happens if I change my Bat! so that
it doesn't leave the message on the server, and see if person2 still
gets a copy.

It is easy to solve:
Your Selective download filter should look like:

Ignore if
Recipient contains [EMAIL PROTECTED]
AND Recipient does not contain [EMAIL PROTECTED]

Your coworker's Selective download filter should look like:

Ignore if
Recipient contains [EMAIL PROTECTED]
AND Recipient does not contain [EMAIL PROTECTED]

So, if you get a mail that is sent to [EMAIL PROTECTED] AND
[EMAIL PROTECTED], the quickest person will download it, so, you have to
setup an incoming filter to redirect this kind of mails:

Your Incoming filter (move to the top and make it Continue processing
with other filters... check) should look like:

If Recipient contains [EMAIL PROTECTED] then
Redirect message to [EMAIL PROTECTED]

Your coworker's Incoming filter (move to the top and make it Continue processing
with other filters... check) should look like:

If Recipient contains [EMAIL PROTECTED] then
Redirect message to [EMAIL PROTECTED]

help with selective download

2005-06-14 Thread David Huber
We have two of us in my office who get email on our own domain, but
which is hosted at fastmail.fm, so the domain is sort of virtual. All
email sent to us is redirected to one fastmail.fm account. I set up
The Bat! on both our computers, and use selective download on each one
to ignore each other's emails:

So I am [EMAIL PROTECTED], and I have my filter set to ignore all
email to [EMAIL PROTECTED]

My office mate, [EMAIL PROTECTED], has hers set to ignore all email to
[EMAIL PROTECTED]

Mostly this works perfectly, except for when someone sends email to
both of us - then The Bat! on both our computer ignores it, and
neither of us downloads it, which has caused some problems today.

Selective Download, for some myopic reason, only allows one to ignore
or kill an email - there is no setting to say "please download this
one", which would solve our problem. It would be much easier to have a
selective download that says "download all email to person1" instead
of having to say "ignore all email to person2".

Of course, the simplest solution is to get another fastmail account
and have one of our email addresses directed to that account, which is
the most efficient way, though to this engineer not the most elegant
(or cost-conscious) solution.

And I could also just have both of us download all email, and set up a
filter to trash any email that wasn't intended for us, but that's not
efficient or elegant either.

Any thoughts on how to solve this problem in The Bat!?

You would need to specify a regular expression for that.

\smeds\s

That should do it. The \s means a space character.

Full sync not working (was Re: selective download with IMAP)

2005-01-02 Thread ken green
> Is there a way to select a group of messages (or even one folder) and
> download message bodies?

OK... I tried to do a full sync on some folders and after two AVs
decided to try one folder at a time. After setting the folder option
to Full messages and syncing that folder, I thought all was good.
(folder in question had just over 1000 messages).

But when I went to read some of the messages in Mailbag Archive, many
of them were blank (headers only). Upon checking these specific
messages in TB, sure enough, only headers are downloaded.

Before I report this as a bug, can someone please confirm this for me?
It's possible I just don't fully understand the way TB is syncing with
IMAP folders. For example, do I need to show all messages when
peforming a full sync (no threading)?

What is the difference between "Full Messages" and "Headers and Text"?
Is it only the flags? What else does a message contain besides its
state (flags), headers and text?

selective download with IMAP

2004-12-30 Thread ken green
Is there a way to select a group of messages (or even one folder) and
download message bodies? Sort of like selective download with the
Dispatcher, I suppose.

For the account I use for mail lists, (using IMAP) I sync headers
only. I'd like to be able to select a group of messages or a whole
folder and download the full message bodies to be able to archive
messages in Mailbag Assistant and clean up my IMAP folders.

I'm really hoping there is a way to do this by selecting messages - I
realize that I could probably temporarily switch a folder to sync full
messages. But that means have to remember to switch back and for large
folders, I may not want to sync the whole folder at one time.

Big problem with filters : selective download with TB3

2004-09-22 Thread WilWilWil
Io,

I had an indispensable filter on V2 that doesn't work anymore with V3 and it is a

My filter is a selective download based on a file on my personal folder. This filter
was OK with V2. I didn't change anything and install V3 over V2. Now this filter
doesn't work !

Here are the settings in filter parameters box :
Panel Type : selective download (last type on the left)

Panel General : Name = myfilter
condition = "Sender" + "contains" + a field with nothing in it.

Panel Action : "Kill"
"Load Signal strings from the file" : checkbox is checked
File field name = "C:\Program Files\wil.the_bat\my
rules\personnal rules.txt" this file contains one address mail a
  line.

Panel Option : "Filter is active" is checked

Nothing more !

What's wrong ? What can I do to make this selective download based on my file with
banned address working OK ?

Possible bug: selective download filters

2004-02-12 Thread Terry
Hi all,

I have a selective download filter set to "Ignore" certain messages. I
assumed that meant that the messages would stay on the server until I
used the dispatcher to delete them. This isn't what is happening.

Here's what does seems to be happening (I'm using a test account
and sending messages to that account, so no other mail is
interfering.):

The messages are being filtered correctly. The log indicates the
presence of a message in the mailbox.

 2/12/2004, 11:36:12: FETCH - 1 messages in the mailbox, 0 new
 2/12/2004, 11:36:12: FETCH - connection finished - 0 messages received

On the next check, the log indicates that the message is still there.

 2/12/2004, 11:39:12: FETCH - 1 messages in the mailbox, 0 new

On the third check, the message is gone!

 2/12/2004, 11:42:11: FETCH - 0 messages in the mailbox, 0 new

I've used the mail dispatcher to look at the e-mail in various stages
without automatic checking. On first check, the e-mail is there with
only the read flag checked. On the second dispatcher check, the read
and *delete* flags are checked. *I wouldn't expect that the delete
flag would be checked.* By the third dispatcher check, of course, the
e-mail's been deleted because the flag was checked.

My settings on the account are to "Delete received messages from
server." Since these aren't received messages, I wouldn't expect them
to be deleted, whether through automatic checking or through the use
of the dispatcher.

I could, of course, use the "Keep messages on server" option. The
messages aren't removed, but then no messages are removed. That
defeats the purpose, IMHO, since the account I want to use the filter
on gets a large amount of e-mail daily and I don't want to wade
through all of the e-mail to find the ones that are ignored.

I've read the help files, but there's not much guidance there. Is
this behavior some kind of bug, or is this by design?

I've also noticed that the results from the Selective Download filters
(whether set to kill or ignore) don't appear in the log. Is this
normal?

Terry

Selective Download for Sobig.C virus

2004-01-06 Thread daniel hahler
Hello all,

I'd like to put up a selective download filter to kill Sobig.C virus'
messages on the server.
I found a list of possible subjects at
http://www.f-secure.com/v-descs/sober_c.shtml, but would like to take
care of other informations (like Recipient address) in the header,
too.

but AFAICS this is not possible.

I now have a list of subjects, that I'd like to link with another set
of strings. This could be made possible with another tab besides
"Rule", like "Additional Rules". So I could have a list of recipients
there.

IIRC there was a new Filtering System announced a while ago, which
would provide global filters, for all accounts and such needful
things. I think the improvement of the Selective Download filter
should happen together with that, provided that it does not take that
long.

Yes, I spent many hours with the help. Unfortunately, that section proved to be
unhelpful to me w.r.t. getting my filter to work.

Do you happen to be using regular expressions in Selective Download filter(s)? If
not, do you know of anyone who is using regular expressions in Selective Download

Thanks again, and

Does Message Dispatcher reflect Selective Download filter action?

2003-12-10 Thread Constance Britten
Hello Bat-friends*,

I am attempting to troubleshoot a regular expression filter in Selective Download and
I am wondering if I should see the results in the Message Dispatcher window. That is,
if I have selected "Kill" for the filter action, those messages that have been
successfully filtered will have their "Delete" box checked. Can anyone tell me if
this is indeed the case?

This morning I upgraded my software to "CE", thinking that perhaps my two-month-old
copy was simply not working properly. Unfortunately, that did not help.

The "Subject" line I am attempting to filter appears as the 21st header line in the
messages I am attempting to kill. Thus appeared for the Subject in the Message
Dispatcher window until I increased the "Message body lines to download with header"
value in the Account Properties to 25. I am wondering if I'm having difficulties
because the Selective Download filter only works on 20 (or fewer) header lines -- can
anyone confirm whether or not this might be the case?

Finally -- if anyone has successfully used regular expressions in their Selective
Download filter(s), I would love to discuss the bitter details in this forum. I spent
many, many hours yesterday reading the help and searching these and the tech archives
and attempting to apply what little I was able to find there w.r.t. this issue, all
without success.

I do have 20+ years experience writing regular expressions for a number of utilities
under various flavors of UNIX. But this is a new application to me and so the nuances
of any special syntax rules The Bat! may require are more-than-likely what are
escaping me at the moment.

I am using The Bat! version 2.02.3 CE under Windows 98SE.

I would be immensely grateful for any assistance with this!

And my thanks to all who have read this far.

selective download of messages with attachments from server using filters

2003-11-17 Thread Vishal
Hi,

This is related to another question I just posted. I retrieve my Yahoo mail
via web2pop. However, any attachments I receive are in the form of 1.msg files
that I cannot open. I usually delete messages from the server when I download
them, but I'd like to create a filter that leaves messages on the server if
they have attachments or are forwards. How could I do this? The filter options
offered no clue, so a first (very quick) guess at how to do it was:

1. create one filter for all messages with the options "message does not have
attachments" and "delete from server" checked. The account properties would
have to be modified to leave mail on the server.
2. create a second filter for all messages with the option "message has
attchments" checked and "delete from server" unchecked.

Cheers,

-Vishal

This is what I am doing. However, I'm not ignoring, but deleting
unwanted messages. Having accidently (and still not knowing why)
deleted a non-spam-msg of minor importance I have now activated the
automatic mail dispatcher every time I check mail (for the account
involved).

Btw:

You may remember someone on the list once mentioned killfiling mail
that has an "X-MSMail-Priority:" flag in the header *and* mentions
"X-Mailer: The Bat" in the headers, because TB!-maild doesn't show
this combination. I checked may spam and now I'm also killing messages
with the "X-MSMail-Priority:" flag *plus* any of the following strings
in the header:

X-Mailer: The Bat
X-Mailer: CyberCreek Avalanche Millennium
X-Mailer: AOL
X-Mailer: McSyn Mailer Pro
X-Mailer: MMailer
Windows Eudora
X-Mailer: MIME-tools
X-Mailer: eGroups Message Poster

Maybe I am misreading the Help system, but I thought that Selective
Download did not allow TB's 'special syntax' - so I don't understand the
prefixes you are using in your list (MainSet:)

How does:
MainSet: microsoft
MainSet: Internet
MainSet: critical

Differ from:
   microsoft
   Internet
   critical

Has that method been consistent? I tried this too, and it has worked for
the Swen.A messages so far. I set my threshold at 90K. But for some
reason, it still allowed a 110K message through. ??

Well, no one else seems to be responding so I will.

I think part of my problem may be that I'm using filter strings with the
'Entire Header' option checked. Many of the strings I was using were
really only appropriate filters for subject lines or from.

I am going to create separate files for ignore_subject, ignore_from,
kill_subject, kill_from, etc..

Is this what other people are doing?

Selective Download inconsistencies

2003-09-25 Thread ken green
I am concerned that my Selected Download filters aren't working right. I
had been expecting to receive a software registration e-mail sometime
today and when it had not yet arrived, I checked the server using the
Dispatcher. Sure enough, it was there - marked read, but not marked to
receive.

I use the same Selective Download settings for all accounts, which
checks all headers (I have a spamkill.txt file and a spamignore.txt
file). Thinking that it might be an over-zealous ignore file, I looked
through the message header to see if I could spot anything that might
trigger an "ignore" - not download.

I couldn't find anything. Then I copied the message to a different
account's Outbox and sent it that way. And the message came through. I
tried redirecting as well, and there was no problem - I received the
message as expected.

So this leads me to believe that there must be something unique in the
headers of the original message to cause the trigger. But I copied the
headers from the original message (which was ignored) and pasted them
above the headers from the message that was redirected, and (as
expected), they were very similar.

I looked over the lines that were different and couldn't see anything
that matched any of the signal strings in my ignore file. What concerns
me is how easily I could have assumed all the messages had already been
received, and just deleted everything.

Anyone else experienced this?

Multiple Responses re. Selective Download Filter Syntax

2003-09-24 Thread Joseph N.
Thanks to all those who replied to my query about selective download
filter syntax. Ironically, I received none of the replies, because
TBUDL blocked my mail due to excessive bounces from my ISP, which in
turn was due to my mailbox constantly becoming full from Swen.A
messages.

I have now fixed that problem and am back in the flow. So here, a tad
late, are a few responses:

* To Roelof:

> Because of the single quotation marks

But the TB! help file specifically says to use single quotation marks:

---Begin Text---
...
Pipe character "|" can be used when the signal string contains
two alternatives. For example, string John|Jack means that the
filter will search for John OR Jack in the specified location.
If either is present, the search is successful. If neither are
present, the search fails.
...
Any text containing the special characters mentioned above
must be enclosed in single quotes
---End Text---

* To Ken:

You've probably already fixed your situation, but the signal string I
was using for selective downloads is the one I posted with my initial
query. It was only about 65% effective, so I have switched
strategies. I am now filtering at the ISP level for all messages over
a certain size. Since I only use this address for newsgroups and
mailing lists, it should work fine; at least, it has been working so
far today

* To zParticle:

Thanks for the helpful cross-ref to the Agent NG.

Thank you very much for that reference. I need to brush up on regex.

Just to be clear: are you talking about using those filters above with
Selective Download or regular Incoming filters?

AVG steps in before TB processes any Incoming filters.

A comprehensive list is available here, at least until another variant
shows up:
http://www.f-secure.com/v-descs/swen.shtml

As discussed in the Agent newsgroup, a regular expression filter on
these two strings catches 99% of these:
  Content-Type: multipart/(mixed|alternative);
  boundary\="([a-z][a-z]*)"

To catch the rest, you'll need to relax or tweak the boundary
expression a bit, as some contain nonalpha characters.

My POP3/smtp provider (not my ISP0 puts email through 3 virus checkers, and I
get a similar message. As they are coming through at a rate of over 1 a minute
it seems a good idea. But it's a paid option.

The impact of this volume on ISPs must be huge. I imagine some are cracking

I like that. I can also easily filter these messages into trash and

I thought that Selective Download did not allow "special syntax" (this
is the help file wording). I can use pipe characters in selective
download?!?! Wow.

Also (to Joseph N.) - I am currently dealing with the same virus e-mails
you are filtering for. Problem is, every time I think I got a domain
and/or subject line variation in my spamkill text file, another variant
shows up.

This would be simple if I could use a regular filter in Selective
Download: these are all coming to only one of my accounts. A simple to
not download a message with attachment would work in this case.

But the AVG plug-in keeps me from using a regular filter for this. I
realize that's a good thing - AVG is jumping in first and finding the
virus. But it's getting annoying getting the virus warning message 5-6
times a day. Actually, as I've been updating my kill file, that number
is growing smaller.

I'm just looking for an easy way to do this with less work.

Joseph, would mind sending me your filters/kill file that you're using
for the MS Network Security Update messages? I can send you what I have
if you want - maybe together we can get all variations.

JH> could you maybe share this file with me? I am going along the

Sure - I assume you want it sent directly to <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>

I probably have a couple of versions, since I haven't been
transferring the strings added to the desktop computer's text file
to the laptop and vice versa, and I can't recall if I added the
strings that were put in each account's filter manager before
deciding to do a .txt file

But the main thing I wanted to say is that my most important
filtering device is my eyeball, and I can spot extraneous &
unexpected mail rather quickly. One of the major clues is the size
column, sine no virus is going to come in with a size like these
messages have.

For instance: I just manually killed two of Microsoft Patch viruses
on the server, one of which said "error message". It's also easy to
notice that the one that said "Microsoft" didn't in fact come from
Microsoft, as the headers showed. If the headers were correct, a
friend of mine in Guadalajara has an infected computer, so I'll drop
him a note to let him know.

The Spam file contains the usual words like mortgage, loan, viagra,
and sex as well as the domains these things came from, but I can
send it on if you really think it will do you any good.

The beauty of the Mail Dispatcher is the fact that I can review and
rectify all that comes in, so that some things marked for deletion
are downloaded, and some things marked for downloading are deleted.

In general however, the selective download filter and Spam.txt file
save me some time. This is why I hesitate to use a service that
figures out these things for me. I want to use my own judgement in
real time. For instance, I just downloaded one of those things from
Africa asking for help getting X millions of dollars out of the
country, just because it was so ingeniously written. (Obviously, I
have no intention on following through on that though, and I get
lots of these scams that are killed on the server).

I use POP3 on accounts and selective download exclusively with the
mail dispatcher, which I set to download 25 lines. That way,
Selective Download will filter on anything contained in that number
of lines and you can review all that's occurring in order to make
any changes you feel are appropriate regarding what will and what
won't be downloaded.

I link all accounts to the same text file, which I continue to
lengthen whenever new Spam mongers are found. This is much easier

Not sure about Selective download (see my troubles below), but in
general, any kind of filtering is usually case-sensitive - especially if
enclosed in quotes. (and regex is case-sensitive)

I can't get Selective download to work. I would greatly appreciate
anyone's help on this. I'm starting to wonder if a 'regular' filter
that deleted items off the server would be a better option for me.

I have a list of e-mail addresses and domains that I'd like to Kill
(never download, delete from the server). In the Selective Download
folder of Sorting Office, I created a filter rule called SpamKill.

I have tried entering the list of addresses in the signal strings box,
as well as using a text file and checking 'load signal strings from a
file' - in both cases, each address/domain was listed on a new line, and
the Advanced tab options were: Action: Kill and Detection method: Any
strings match.

But I can't get this to work. According the help system, Selective
download signal strings do not allow the special syntax used by other
types of filters.

How are people getting Selective Download to work? Does each string need
to be in quotes or something? Should the signal strings be
comma-delimited? I feel like I'm missing something terribly obvious.

i'm pretty sure i'm deleting all the wrong stuff, but it would be nice to
check - even afterwards ;-)

Try

(?m)^From:\s*238\d{3}@

any search in the entire header. You have to switch on
PCRE_MULTILINE (see help file) for the circumflex to work.

In regular filters PCRE_MULTILINE is active by default.

regexp in selective download filter problem

2003-08-28 Thread Timur Kadyshev
I'm trying to filter out messages with "From:" field containing
address that starts with "238", and then has three digits before "@".
Regexp I'm using is ^238\d\d\d@ . I tested this regexp with regular
filter -- it worked just fine (after I enabled regular expression
filtering). Then I created a Selective Download rule with ^238\d\d\d@
as its Signal String, and checked "Match any string as regular expression"
at the "Advanced" tab. This rule does not work. What am I doing wrong?

Here is an example of header of a message that does not filter out:

No there isn't. Which is one of the reasons whyI don't use this

Selective download filter

2003-03-03 Thread Nick Dutton
Hello,

I've started playing, nervously, with the "Selective Download" feature. But
while my tests all seem to work nicely, the actions appear not to be logged
by TB (ctrl-shift-A).

Is there some way that I can see what decisions have been made by TB on my
behalf before I use this feature for real?

Regards,

No, there is no difference. I have always had this filter configured
exactly this way and use it several times a day - for a long time
now. An "Active" filter is used by the automated filtering process
whether or not it is also manual. A manual and inactive filter can
only be used manually with a hotkey. That's how I see it and how it
works for me.

TBBETA is as good a place as any.

It works for me but apparently not for all.

Makes sense, but my view, namely that a filter will never be executed
unless it is also Active, makes sense too. Now somebody not using a
beta version said that Manual filters will not work when Active is not
checked - I wonder whether there is a difference between the release
versions and the beta versions (in which case we should move the
thread to TBBETA).

Anyway, I don't think there is a documentation about this. Where would
we ask what Ritlabs "really meant" with the Active tickmark? If your
explanation is what is desired, it is not a bug but by design. But is
it?

"Active" means to me that a filter will be used by the Sorting
office and Re-filter functions automatically. "Manual" means that it
will only work when invoked by hotkey or Re-filter with Manual
checked, but the latter will only work if the filter is both Manual
and active. That's how I see it.

Isn't this a bug? What I mean is, if this is correct behaviour, I
don't understand the logic behind the Active tickmark.

It may be that different TB versions behave differently. I, like
