Yep, until the next time ZA's config got corrupted. Happened quite a

But I've switched to Kerio and don't regret that.

Support raises the cost of an application. The_Bat! is a very
powerful and INEXPENSIVE MUA for just that reason. RITLabs consists of
developers and coders. Being as technical support is done by members

ZA can cause problems for TB by disabling Internet access for TB. Most
people experiencing ZA vs TB problems were using NTFS partitions, so
it might be related.

ZA has problems with a corrupting config file, at least all versions I
used had this problem. It's prone to forget to save modifications to
the config. Especially when it's running long sessions (continuously
running pc's). The problems I had were easily solved by deleting the
config and start ZA again and after a day or two all necessary
programs had been entered again.

ZA is particularly notorious for cause connectivity problems with TB!.
The reports are many and I had my own personal experience with it and
ended up uninstalling it. The thing is that not everyone experiences
these problems. Additionally, the problems don't always start
immediately after installing ZA or TB! and it's this particular point
that made my experience so miserable. They were working fine together
and then the problems started. It therefore took me a long time to pin
down the cause. I just never suspected ZA.

Be that as it may, like myself, those who reported these problems also
cured their problems by switching to another firewall.

You may just be one of the fortunates who has been doing ok with it.
The problems seem to be more common with NT based systems and for those
who keep their machines running for extended periods between reboots. I
think I'd still be using ZA if I rebooted my machine daily since my
problems with it were always cured with a reboot and the problems would
restart after a few days without rebooting.

So am I, but I've occasionally seen a problem. TB will try to check
mail and ZA will begin using 99.9% of system resources. Occasionally
the ZA process can be killed, but often the computer must be powered
off.

The current version of ZA seems to have resolved the problem and
support at Zone Labs is generally willing to work with users to track
down the problem.

Me neither. But if you leave your mails on the server for some days

When the file shortcut.cfg has the read-only flag set, you can't edit

If that isn't the case. What OS are you using? Do you have access

Yes, bugs can sometimes be difficult to reproduce, especially when

I've upgraded to 2.0 beta 3 as well and will certainly continue to report

I don't even know if it is failing. The Bat! does, and others have
experience the same. What should I do which does not involve any of my ISP's
next time this occurs to possibly at least isolate the problem to a specific ISP.

ISP, Internet Service Provider. Under this term I include the internet
service which grants me general access to the internet via digital cable and
modem as well as the internet services provided to me by school and
corporate sources as necessary, as well as those internet services provided
to me by the provider of my own website hosting. Just to clarify.

POP3, standard port, no SSL, no AV, no firewall. Problem has occurred for
quite some time in many versions of 1.x. Problem has occurred for other
users I never knew of until today. Problem has occurred across many
reformats and on multiple machines.

Well for some reason I didn't see it as a blue link. I got 2.0 and now I do.

I think an anonymous coward like you, [EMAIL PROTECTED], should not
try to classify anyone as a »sucking« one. Next time you try flaming
please make sure that you filled in your real name into the
appropriate field of your mail program.

You are absolutely right, this should be fixed. But how? IIRC Rit
had problems reproducing this bug.

A lot of people experienced the »hanging« connection center,
including me. And it is very annoying indeed. I am using v2 beta now
and had no connection center trouble for quite some beta versions. I
don't know what changed, if it's TB! or something else...

Not really - It's been a TB feature since late in the 1.5x series.

Are you using IMAP or POP3? Standard port settings? Any SSL or

You shouldn't need 2.0 to get that feature... it's been in there for a
while. Just double click on the mid: link, and if it cannot find the email
in the folder you're in, it'll prompt you for other folders you might want
to search.

No, just courteous. TB is able to trace the original message in a
folder by clicking on that link.

ZoneAlarm is a client-side software firewall known to stall TB's
communications.

Are these your own mail servers? Do you have access to the logs on
the servers? If so, it may be beneficial to expose a critical trace
of the stuck transaction for the experts on the TBTECH mailing list

I used to have that problem occasionally. It seemed to be a problem
with one particular email on the server. I would note where the DL
stopped and then go out and delete the offending email and then things
would work fine.

Since I started using the beta version for 1.63 I have not had this
particular problem manifest and it has been quite some time now. So
you might want to give this a try.

Can't address your shortcut issue, though. Sorry.

One more thing, killing the process makes my life even more hellish because
I lose folders quite often and have to use that magic lost folders repair
shortcut, I'm not even sure if it exists in the menus.

I wish I could just lop off parts of TB I don't use. They get in the way and
make me think they are the cause of some problems in other places.

blah!

2003-08-22 Thread io219
I am sick and tired of having to kill the TB process. This has happened in
most/all versions I have ever used and I reported it many times. Oddly, the
support personnel I have always been in contact with suck.

They told me to turn off folder compression, so I did, and it had no effect,
but damn I considered it a strange reply.

Anyway, the problem is that mail stops being received. Hilariously, I see
this EXACT problem as the reason some people have expressed they did not
evaluate The Bat! for very long. Even more hilariously, they also mention
the other main problem I have, keyboard shortcuts not being saved.

Explaining to support that keyboard shortcut edits are not being saved
turned out to be beyond futile, presumably because of a language barrier.
You edit them, you click ok, you go back, they are not what you just changed
them to. I must have explained this in over a dozen ways.

So, my problems are

1) Mail stops being retrieved. In the old days before I bitched about this a
ton, we didn't get the "Some Tasks are still Active, quit when they are
done" message, we just didn't get anything and killed the process. They
obviously know what the hell is going on because they added that dialog. My
best guess, since they seem incapable of coming up with one, is that the
retrieval thread is being `de-synched` when a server is slow, for whatever
reason, perhaps it is slow enough that the timeout has elapsed AFTER a new
retrieval is supposed to begin. IE, a timeout occurs 90 seconds after an
attempt, but the retrievals are supposed to occur every 60 seconds.

2) keyboard shortcuts are not being saved, wah!

These problems have existed in many versions, I won't accept being told
simply to upgrade, and I could care less if others have not experienced
them. I have never reported any bug or slew of bugs without being told
vehemently that others have not experienced them.

I am angry because I have spent... maybe 40-100 hours on all of these
problems and some related ones in my history with The Bat!, it reminds
me of a bad open source application in this regard. High TCO.

I am evaluating Becky, but it misses just BARELY in some esoteric, but very
important features I am afraid. Perhaps the plugin system can overcome that.

I also wonder how well designed the plugin system for TB is. After all,
you can damn near say every Windows application has a plugin system by way
of catching Win32 messages and the like. Winamp's plugin system is an
example of this farce, I wonder if Becky or The Bat's are.
