It looks like you use your own SMTP server. I'd go through all the
config info for your SMTP software, because that's where the problem
is, not TB.

Basically, when you specify a message as belonging to a chat, it puts
that "thread" of correspondence in the chat folder.

So, for instance, if you specified this thread on the TB list as a
chat (don't do this as you'll tick some people off), then everyone
using TB would have this thread in the chat folder.

It's use is to keep all the messages together in a running thread so
you can track the conversation in its entirety.

You need TB users to be able to use this.

And again, don't do this with a list message, as you'll force that
thread into the chat folder with notifications to everyone on the TB
lists who didn't turn it off explicitly (or maybe by default it is, I
don't recall).

E. No.. I guess the simplest way to explain is would be to mimic
it manually.

You send a message to some friends at work. You then create a folder
and a filter to filter any replies to that folder. All your friends
who received your initial message or join in later also do the same.

So you have a folder which collects all the conversation about your
original message. The "Chat" feature just automates this for you.

Where it can really make a mess is when you do it on one of the TB
lists, because then everyone gets a Chat folder and that thread ends
up there instead of whatever folder all their TB messages get put into
normally.

In your TB folder, usually C:\Program Files\The Bat!, is a folder
called images. Unzip the ZIP into that folder. The .MSL will stay in
the images folder, and a new subfolder called PCWSmileys will be
created with all the images for PCWSmileys in it.

The Bat User Documentation Project (TBUDP)

2004-09-07 Thread Leif Gregory
Hello TB,

Ok.. The TB Wiki site is up and running. Initially, I was going to
wait a few days till we got stuff figured out (from an admin
perspective on initial configuration, it's expansive), but we really
need people to start using it so we can see what modules we need to
add to allow people more flexibility. Sometimes we alone can't see
  all the angles.

Head on over, play with it a bit. Don't start shooting us e-mail
just yet on any errors you come across (there shouldn't be many) as
we're still making changes to how it works in terms of
functionality. The site is running on TikiWiki which is very, very
impressive so far. The permissions section is huge, so if you get
errors, those will most likely be the ones you get (in terms of
saying you can't access that module).

  Have fun.

Firstly, TB will not display images that are HREF'd to a web site.
i.e. if the pic isn't sent *as part of* the HTML message, it will not
be displayed, and TB will not go to a web site and download the pic.

Secondly, TB will not run Visual Basic Script (VBS) embedded in HTML,
nor will it run Javascript embedded in HTML.

TB will display straight HTML (minus the HREF'd images to a web site),
and none of that other junk that people put in web pages. This makes
is invulnerable to those types of worms and attacks.

AFAIK, no. There are only two programmers (Max and Stefan), and

Maybe they can port something later (if there is Delphi for MAC, I

re: SOT - Visual Basic Scripting

Well, that depends on how you look at it. Don't forget that I*LOVE*YOU
affected MS Outlook addressbooks (to send to the next unlucky
recipients.) In this way, it was targeted as MS, but other than the
addressbook issue, there would really be no difference between an
Outlook user's and a TB user's results when they run an attached .vbs.

Possible amendment to that would be if the worm/virus also affected
settings for Internet security restricted zones. If your MUA of choice
is TB, and the browser of choice is Opera, a worm/virus that changes
the security zone settings isn't going to affect you much.

The reason most of these are targeted at MS is because:

1. Many people hate them
2. All of their applications are so integrated with each other that
the implicit trust between say Outlook and MS Word makes it easy
for a worm/virus to be written and a .DOC file to be infected
(macro virus), which in turn does whatever with the addressbook
   from Outlook.

IIRC, Outlook Express was the only one that would auto-run in-lined
.vbs and javascript if the preview pane was active. Oh well. Sorry
this was disjointed, but I'm in a hurry to get to work.

TBUDL is for discussion concerning issues with official releases (read
non-beta), while TBBETA is for, you guessed it, issues concerning
betas. We keep them separate so as to not confuse the people who don't
use betas with discussion of beta specific problems on TBUDL.

So, the short answer to your question, is if the problem/bug is
apparent only in a beta release, then it needs to be moved/discussed
on TBBETA.

Hope this clears up the issue.
Thanks.

Ooooh, that's a difficult one-- for me at least. Some people on here
are proficient with REGEXPs, and I think you will need to set one of
these up to "filter" out the RE from someone's message SUBJECT.

Ask a question about REGEXPs and your need to remove the RE. Someone

If the imaged is HREF'd off your machine to say, a web site, then TB
displays only exclamation points. If they HREF'd the attached images,
then TB will display them as normal. It was done this way on purpose.
One trick spammers use, is to assign a unique ID to an image request
in the HTML, so when you open the message, the image is requested from
the spammers web site, the unique ID is passed along to them, and they
now have a verified "live" e-mail address to sell to other spammers.

You're going to find a fairly even split of people on this subject,
and if you want to read past discussions concerning this, I suggest
you read the list archives.

Personally, I prefer it the way it is, but I foresee someone writing a
plugin for v2.0 (whenever it gets out! ) that will get the
on-line images for those who want them.

l> (2) Why are my messages sorted by TIME all of a sudden; this is

This is covered in the FAQ. All messages received on the current date
show only the time. These same messages will show the date as well
once the current day has ended. Don't worry, your messages are still
properly sorted.

This has been brought up many times as well, and Steve will be the
first to side with you on this one as he also is used to the
style of writing. You can't please
everyone, and some people (like me) like using the ALT-L to remove the
double-spaces from replied messages.

Unsub the lostenroute address and sub the jpcase address. See the
bottom of every message coming from this list for exact instructions.

However, a quick fix to your problem is to create a folder for TBUDL
messages, and make the reply and new message templates for that folder
to have the FROM and REPLY-TO information as lostenroute. This way,
you get the best of both worlds-- list messages sent to lostenroute,
and the ability to send messages to the list using TB.

l> Is anyone following this?

Perfectly!

Well, a workaround, but not an elegant one is to move it to the

Sure... Go to Options/Message List Colors, add a new entry with
whatever colors, bolding, fonts etc. that you want to stand for
something important. i.e. Bold, Red, Underline for all messages from
my boss with the word "fired" in it. .

It's up to you to come up with your own color/font/style schemes and
what they mean to you.

Once you've defined them, then you can right click a message, go down
to Color Groups, and then select the appropriate one.

Have fun.

Right-click on the folder and select properties. On the first tab is

Don't need much in the way of a primer. If you put
%TO="[EMAIL PROTECTED]" in a template, that address will appear
in the TO field of any message created using that template. If you use
it in a REPLY template, then it will put that address in the TO field
in addition to the address already in the TO field from the reply.

To get around that, if you want *only* the TO address you specify to
appear in the TO field-- even after a reply, then you need to use the
TO macro twice-- the first time with no value, as this will clear the
TO field. i.e.

%TO=""
%TO="[EMAIL PROTECTED]"

I don't have any problems with it. Can you let us know what types of

However, using Clipmate (Two button clicks and a CTRL-V), it not only
removes the overquotes, but it reforms the paragraphs completely, and
rewraps them at any column setting I tell it to. i.e. fixed and
wrapped at 40 columns:

1. Only in America..can a pizza get
to your house faster than an ambulance.

2. Only in America..are there
handicap parking places in front of a
skating rink.

3. Only in America..do drugstores
make the sick walk all the way to the
back of the store to get their
prescriptions while healthy people can
buy cigarettes at the front.

4. Only in America..do people order
double cheese burgers, large fries, and
a diet coke.

It's a very simple function of Clipmate to use. Take a gander at
their animated demo of the Text Clean-up function:
<http://www.thornsoft.com/LeeLou/CleanUp_viewlet.html>

I would love to see a plugin for TB that has got this kind of juice
when v2.0 comes out.

Now *that* solves my problems. Mucho thanks. Now I can agree that
non-MDI is better. No more 25-30 buttons on my taskbar when I

If you right click a folder, there is a checkbox called "Use Account
Default Column Settings." If you check this box, it becomes a
"defaulted" folder.

Let's say you have ten folders which you've just made "defaults". If
you change the column settings in any one of those ten, the other nine
also change to reflect the new column settings you've made. Very handy
indeed.

B> 2) Be able to override the default criteria on a folder by folder

Already does... Make sure the Use account default settings option is
off for that folder when you create it.

B> 3) Be able to create (and assign names to) a variable number of

Errr. The closest right now is using CTRL 1 - 10 (See View/Sort By in
the menu.)

B> 4) Be able to make the current sort criteria that is being used the

You can by setting the sort criteria of a folder that is one of the
defaults.

Most certainly, although it may not fit your preconceived notion
exactly.

For example, say you have four address book groups named:
Co-Workers
Friends
Family
Fellow TBUDLers

Now, you must-- in the address book --tell TB which addresses are
favorites. Can't get around that one, sorry.

Create a new message, then right-click in any of the fields (TO, CC,
BCC)

You should see the address book groups listed, and the ones with
little right-arrows are slide out menus that will show you all the
favorites in that group.

While you said that you have "many" recipients you'd have to check, I
most certainly wouldn't want this as a default behavior for any
address I add. That would be well over 5,000 (I run multiple
discussion lists and newsletters.)

I get to choose only those who are truly "favorites" due to the
frequency of mailing to them.

Effective Immediately

2000-08-10 Thread Leif Gregory

Hello users,

Over the last few days, Marck and I have received a flood of e-mail
concerning the flame wars on the TB lists.

New list rule in effect as of right now!

Marck, Wolfgang and I are the list moderators-- the *only* list
moderators.

It is our job to ensure that things run smoothly with the list and its
participants. We fully believe that arguments are healthy and that
they help to push TB to better places. However, lately, the arguments
have been getting personal, derogatory, insulting, and offensive. This
is something that we feel strongly about.

>From now on, if a message is deemed outside of the bounds by the
moderators (and only the moderators), the poster will receive a
warning via private e-mail.

The second time, you will be be banned from the list with no fanfare.

If you feel that you must degrade someone in a public forum, then you
are a child and will be dealt with as such.

If you can't overcome your childish impulses, then you had better send
your e-mail privately to the recipient.

If you are the recipient of said e-mail, and you don't like it, filter
their e-mail to the trash.

We're all adults here. Let's start acting like it.

For clarification:

- Outside the bounds is defined as a post which is personally
  insulting and/or derogatory.

Things such as, but not limited to:

You're an ^&%*$, or any variant thereof
Telling someone to go do something to themselves
Telling someone to do something to you
Telling someone to go do something to someone else
  Namecalling
Remarking on someone's intelligence, or rather, the lack thereof.

You want to be sarcastic, that's fine, you get personal, that's not!
And don't be a child and find little loopholes like "You know, some
people are unbelievably stupid!" and then defend yourself saying
"But I didn't direct it at him/her personally." We'll know the
difference, and we'll hold you to it.

- Concerning the warnings.

We're not going to keep a yearly running tab of who said what, when,
and whether it earned them a disapproving glare from the moderators.
The time between the warning and a ban will be determined on several
levels and on a case-by-case basis to include the severity,
  impulsiveness, and consensus among moderators.

Those of you who have been with TBUDL and TBBETA know that we-- the
moderators, aren't heavy-handed, "My way or the highway" people. Those
who have been admonished in the past know that we did it fairly, in
accordance with "posted" list rules, and with good reason. There has
only been one banning in TBUDL/TBBETA history, and we'd like to keep
it that way.

Thank you.

Cheers,
Leif Gregory

Where's the list rules - was Re: (No Subject)

2000-08-10 Thread Leif Gregory
7;l')

   g. When posting a response to someone's question, be meaningful. If
they are having problems and they just happen to be running a
386 or Win 3.11, don't just tell them to buy a better computer,
or to upgrade to Win98 (unless these are the root causes of the
problem). What I'm getting at is that it doesn't help the
  original poster with the problem.

   h. Please don't post "Me too" and "Thank you" type messages. If you
feel the need to send this type of reply, send it privately to
the poster. What this basically means, is that if someone helps
you out, or you want a file the poster has offered to anyone
wanting it, send them the message privately. If you agree with
what a list member has posted, "I agree" posts are acceptable,
but please try to adhere to netiquette rule "i".

   i. Try to eliminate as much of the original post when you quote as
possible without eliminating the important aspects. What I'm
getting at here is that you don't hit reply to a four paragraph
question, type your response and hit send. Try to cut out as
much as possible while retaining the general gist of the
original message. On the other side of the coin, do at least
quote some of the message, so that other list members will be
able to see what you are answering to and be able to follow
  along.

   j. Do *not* send attachments with your post. Most people will not
appreciate having to download a file attached to a post that has
nothing to do with them. We have also already had one instance
in the past where an attached file was infected with a virus.
Habitual offenders will be removed from the list. Exceptions to
this rule are your vCard and/or public PGP signature in an ASCII
  file.

   k. Sigs are fine, but don't make them excessively long. If people
are complaining about your sig, then maybe you should shorten
it. It is also a good idea to place a "-- " (dash dash space CR)
on a clear line before your sig so that it is automatically
  excluded from replies.

   l. When writing to the list, especially when asking for help with a
problem you may be having, it is useful, nay, vital to specify
which version of The Bat! you are using and even which operating
system you are using. To that end, it is a good idea to add the
following text to the New Message and Reply macros for your
  TBUDL folder templates:

Using The Bat! %THEBATVERSION
under %WINDOWSPLATFORMNAME %WINDOWSMAJORVERSION.%WINDOWSMINORVERSION Build
%WINDOWSBUILDNUMBER %WINDOWSCSDVERSION

If you have a TBUDL entry in your address book, you can also add
these macros to any templates you may be using there.

   m. As hard as we try, sometimes bad things happen with the list,
and you may be inadvertently removed from the subscriber list.
If this happens, and you need to resubscribe to the list, send a
  message to the auto-responder at:<[EMAIL PROTECTED]>.

2. Other than that.. Let's have a good time with this. I want to hear
everyone's ideas, tips & tricks etc.. The Bat! is an extremely
impressive e-mail client, and I'm sure we will have lot's to talk
   about.

Leif Gregory

Newsgroups/forums for TB - was Re: why do u discriminate me just cuz Im new to this list?

2000-08-12 Thread Leif Gregory

Hello all,

When I started TBUDL, I gave serious consideration to doing it in a
newsgroup. Four things affected my decision to with a discussion list
instead:

1. Lack of control concerning who and who could not post. i.e.
   - Spammers
   - People whose only intention is to bash TB (and there have been a
 few even on TBUDL.)

2. The unbelievably great support I got from Max and Stefan when I
showed RITLabs that with a few enhancements, I could use TB to host
the discussion list. I had a brand-spanking new binary sitting in
my inbox the very next day with many of the proposed enhancements I
asked for to make TB a viable list server.

3. The list was about an e-mail program, and it made perfect sense to
me that since the people subscribed to TBUDL would be using TB to
get their mail anyway, why not keep two related things together.
(Yes, I know, there were a few people who were subscribed to the
   lists but used other MUAs.)

4. I wasn't familiar with the process of setting up a newsgroup.

A number of TB related discussion lists have popped up since then
(mainly for other languages), and I say more power to people to do it.
The same goes for a NG and forum. If you want to start one, go for it.
If people use it, great! However, past experience has shown that they
won't.

For example, a TB forum was created by Erik Ommundsen at
<http://www.falkware.com/thebat/forum/> (Defunct now) in January of
2000. It was a relatively nice forum as forums go, but it didn't get
much use.

1. People wanted to be able to do off-line browsing of posts.
2. Forums are notoriously slow.
3. Depending on the type of forum, it can be hard to follow threads.

My personal opinion on a NG is that it would most certainly fare
better than the forum did, but now people are required to have a NG
reader, SPAM is ever present, multiple NGs on similar subjects often
get nasty cross-posting problems-- as opposed to the discussion lists
where the moderators have control over who can post and where.

I'm not saying it won't work, but me personally, I wouldn't use it. I
use the NGs for many different purposes, but for the task of
discussing TB, I am perfectly content and feel that the discussion
lists suit my needs exactly.

It offers similar functionality, but it's *not* a newsreader, wasn't
designed as a newsreader, and you're only going to be able to simulate
one using the different functions of TB. V2 of TB might include
functionality for a newsreader-- I really hope *not*, unless it's a
plugin.

You'll need to set up a Selective Download filter, and set messages
matching TBUDL and/or TBBETA criteria to "Ignore". This will get the
rest of your mail, but then you can use dispatcher to see all the TB*
list messages still on the server.

How would he do that? It's filtering SPAM by exception, meaning that
you create filters for things you want to keep, and everything else is
caught by the last filter as SPAM. About the only filter he might have
in common this way is for TBUDL and TBBETA (even then there is no
guarantee), and maybe the last filter to move SPAM to the trash.
Everything else is going to be fairly unique to Steve based on his
family, friends, mailing/discussion lists he's subscribed to etc.

Back when I had the FAQ hosted on my last web host, I had about 10 or

We'll check the subscribers list, but chances are that they are spider
botting the list archives. If this is the case, then there isn't much
that can be done unfortunately. Other than killing off the list
archives, which we wouldn't want to do, because list archives are
*very* useful.

Another possibility is that the person spamming you is indeed a list
member, but they'd have to be morons to be subscribed to the lists
using the same e-mail address they use in the SPAM.

We'll let you all know though.

Here is a cut and paste of the last answer I sent to someone on this,
and they said it worked for them.

**
Unfortunately, this is a problem not with The Bat!, but with OE. When
you install OE it asserts its association with .EML files. When you
install The Bat!, it also asserts its association with .EML files.
This is the normal way of Windows. New software associates itself with
the filetypes it deals with.

The problem is that OE does not detect that it has lost the
association, and therefore never tries to reassert those associations.

For instance, if you load IE5, it asserts associations with .htm,
.html etc. When you then later install, for instance, Netscape, then
Netscape takes over those associations. However, in this case,
whenever you remove Netscape, and begin using IE again, it detects the
loss of associations and asks if you would like to make IE the default
browser again (which re-associates the filetypes.) OE doesn't do
this, and I have no idea why. I guess they figure that they are the
only game in town and nobody else would use the .EML extension.

You might try this.

- Open a folder on your hard drive.
- Select View then Folder Properties from the menu bar.
- Choose the File Types tab.
- Scroll down until you see Internet E-mail Message
- Click it once, then hit the Edit button.
- In the Actions box, select Open, then click the Edit button
- Use the Browse button to locate the OE executable, then click OK
- Click OK again, and again, and again
**

Hello users,

As Marck mentioned in his last moderator's comment, I am leaving the
TB lists for a while. There are going to be some huge changes in my
life, and I need to concentrate on those for a couple of months.

Hopefully I'll be back after this, and I know Marck and Allie will do
a darn good job of moderating/running the lists. There could be no
better than these two to leave the list to. They have proven their
worth leaps and bounds many times over.

Thank you very much Marck and Allie. You'll never know how much I

I'm still working on it. Sorry I posted a message to TBOT yesterday
about the problem, but forgot to post one here.

I think I found a bug of some sort in Tiki Wiki. Yesterday, I logged
on and saw Roelof had created an account. I went to make him an
administrator, and that's when everything went south. Apparently he
had been editing his account properties at the same time I made him an
admin.

I still don't know what happened, but the problem is limited to user
permissions/logins somehow. We haven't lost any data, so I'm probably
going to reinstall the software, and move over all the existing pages.
This may entail everyone having to create their account again, but
that's pretty easy.

Sorry for not posting the notification here.

TBUDP Wiki site part deux...

2004-09-12 Thread Leif Gregory
Hello All,

Ok Still not sure what happened, but I suspect there was
corruption in the user table when I set Roelof as an admin while he
was editing his account properties. The problem was it wasn't just
the user table. Tiki Wiki has 192 tables in the DB. Each table has
usually a minimum of 5 or 6 fields, and some with 20 some odd fields.
Overall, there was just too much data to sort through to try and find
the exact problem. I would be doing it for a week.

At any rate, I rebuilt the site (got up at 3am this morning) at a
slightly different URL. We had no data loss other than I could not
import the user table over as something in it was causing the
 problem.

Apologies, but you'll have to register again.

Other than that.. I believe I have the permissions thing figured out,
so the permissions shouldn't be a problem anymore. I'll tell you
what... The only other piece of software where I saw such granularity
and complexity in permissions that was worse, is a Microsoft Project
Server. That's an ugly beast to consistently configure permissions on.

 Here's the new URL.

Just based on what you listed in the e-mail it looks like they're only

Check Account - Properties - Transport - Click the Authentication

Because the .MSI references a relative path to the Rogues images.
TheBat! looks for the .MSL files in the images directory. We decided a
while back to put images related to each .MSL file in their own
directory so that one, it looks neater than having the images folder
jam packed with tons of images, and two, so that if two images were
named the same but from different .MSLs, they wouldn't overwrite each
other.

Just in case you didn't know. Have you tried putting the message in
the Outbox, opening it, edit the subject line, save it, and then move
the message to your archive folder?

The URL at the bottom of every message you receive from the TB lists

Unfortunately, yes... It's getting bad. It used to be you'd only get

There's a TBUDP wiki page covering them at:

It's editable and anyone can help make it current.

Part of the problem with the shortcuts is that they're configurable,
so about the only thing to do with it is to list the defaults right
after TB is installed.
