[Texascavers] 17th International Congress of Speleology: Registration is open!

2016-08-04 Thread George Veni via Texascavers
Dear Friends,

The 17th International Congress of Speleology is an event of the International
Union of Speleology (UIS) and will be held in Sydney, Australia, on 23-29 July
2017. This is the world's most important gathering of cave explorers,
scientists, managers, and educators. It happens only once every four years and
registration is now open! To register visit
https://www.speleo2017.com/Register.html, but first visit
https://www.speleo2017.com/Circulars.html where you will find the Second
Circular, a convenient document for finding information on all of the trip and
other options for the congress.

Some of you are concerned about the cost of traveling to Australia. Before you
decide not to go, please consider this. The Congress will be held during the
Australian winter (the local weather in Sydney is usually mild at this time),
which means the prices for flights to Australia will be at their lowest. Also,
look at the Second Circular. Our hosts are making every effort to open
Australia's caves and karst to all of us at the lowest possible prices. If you
have ever wanted to visit Australia, and it is a fabulous place to visit, you
will never have another such opportunity to see so much for so little. Also, be
sure to register by 31 January 2017 for the lowest registration prices.

All of the information you need about the Congress is at
https://www.speleo2017.com/index.html. Please feel free to share and post this
message to all who may be interested.

Nothing to do with caving so you can delete this or watch it. It is pretty
good political stuff on warming and corruption.

Indeed it is true! I just checked the message in "outlook" and presto there
 was Charlie's name. My apologies.

AOL is evil! I am trapped in AOL Hell and have spent the last several daze
trying to find my way out, but since I am even more of a Luddite than
Charlie I have thus far failed to do so. The main issue is trying to rescue
the
many stories with embedded images that I have composed and stored on AOL.
Their software is proprietary so I can't simply copy the stories with the
images and formatting intact. Eventually I hope to migrate everything to
either a blog or a dedicated website since I long ago gave up any hope of
actually publishing a book.

Sorry for being so grumpy!

That was Charlie Loving. I have travelled internationally with Mr. Loving on 2
of the most memorable trips of my life, especially our loosely organized jaunt
to Puerto Rico in '95 or '96 where we saw the Cueva Angeles portion of the Rio
Camuy system. It was a trip in both senses of the word -- there are some
mediocre pics on my Flickr page.

Last night, from the comfort of my home in Irving, Texas, I watched and
enjoyed the program live from Austin. I used the app Periscope. It was easy.

The program was a slide show and lively narrative by Fernando Hernandez
about this year's PESH (Proyecto Espeleologico Sistema Huautla) expedition.
This was Fernando's first trip to Huautla. His perspective as a Mexican
citizen, excellent caver, fluent in English, and culturally sensitive, made
for a very interesting talk.

My understanding is that the video of Fernando's talk will be available
at Periscope for a short amount of time.

One thing that Fernando did not mention is that he was the winner of the
PESH 2016 Expedition "Rookie of the Year" award. He hustled underground and
was a pleasure to be around.

Was indeed a good talk. Kept the audience quiet past the usual time for leaving
for the after-meeting meeting at the Posse. Fernando has a nice report on his
trip in the latest AMCS Activities Newsletter (advertisement,
http://www.mexicancaves.org/nl/39.htm). It is part of several exploration
narratives gathered into the first article in the issue.

If anyone can figure out how to capture that video from Periscope as an .mp4 or
similar, please do for the AMCS archives -- Mixon

*You travel a lot. *

*I traveled a lot before I reached 60. *
*Africa, South America, Central America, Europe and all those places.
Spent years in Colombia and Peru. Got stuck in Argentina during the
Malvinas War. Lived in Real de Catorce for five years all in the era before
technology and never thought or missed it. I guess since I don't use it I
don't miss it. I still like steel nibbled pens that you dip into an ink
well to do art. Something about that makes a connection, you can't make a
mistake. *

*Sent faxes from Talara, Peru in those days. Flew in Portuguese helicopters
in Angola and Italian ones in Zaire. It was all good fun and devious. Did
somethings in Africa with the French military mission as a liaison person,
since I was raised with that as my first language back when I was going to
grade school in Switzerland.*

I agree with Mark. I do not know from where Bockbeer draws his information
but he continues to amaze with his never ending stories. I did cross at
N.L. in the middle of a gun battle but only heard the noise and didn't pay
attention to it and turned right on Peru Street and drive to Anahuac and
Lampazos with nary a fret. Bockbeer of course has driven that road within
the past year I am sure and had hand grenades thrown and his SUV that gets
5 mpg and overheats for lack of a radiator cap. Crap I know know about
Bockbeer than my own kids. Does he use red or blue TP?

We cross at Nuevo laredo on the way to and from Huautla every year,
sometimes at Colombia and sometimes at the main crossing in town. It
hasn't been a problem, and we never see anything out of the ordinary.
However, we make a point of crossing in daylight, and we don't drive at
night in general. We take toll roads whenever possible. There are now
good roads throughout most of Mexico, and travel is much faster and
safer than it used to be on the old, narrow, two-lane highways. Tolls
are expensive (about $100 one way to Huautla), but worth it.

[Texascavers] UTG program last night

2016-08-04 Thread Bill Steele via Texascavers
Last night, from the comfort of my home in Irving, Texas, I watched and enjoyed
the program live from Austin. I used the app Periscope. It was easy.

The program was a slide show and lively narrative by Fernando Hernandez about
this year's PESH (Proyecto Espeleologico Sistema Huautla) expedition. This was
Fernando's first trip to Huautla. His perspective as a Mexican citizen,
excellent caver, fluent in English, and culturally sensitive, made for a very
interesting talk.

My understanding is that the video of Fernando's talk will be available at
Periscope for a short amount of time.

One thing that Fernando did not mention is that he was the winner of the PESH
2016 Expedition "Rookie of the Year" award. He hustled underground and was a
pleasure to be around.

[Texascavers] sort of related to Tex-Mex caving

2016-08-04 Thread David via Texascavers
Do Texas cavers still pass thru the bordertown of Nuevo Laredo on
their way to Bustamante ?

If so, here is a travel-safety-related story:

Last Sunday, there were allegedly 2 shoot-outs between an alleged group
of men with assault rifles, and some group authorized by the gov't to fight
crime. There is only a tiny vague report in the major newspaper El
Man~ana, and a
2 fuzzy dark videos with bullet sounds on YouTube that barely vaguely
confirm it,
( could be firecracker videos ).

Below are the coordinates:

 27.473534, -99.546544

That is about 2,000 feet south of the route that we used to drive on the
way to Bustamante back in the mid-1980's. And about 1-1/2 mile from
what used to be called, "Boystown." ( Sidenote: I heard rumors that
place has been
shut down for years. The official name of the place was the "Zona
de Tolerancia." )

What makes this news story stand out, is the 2 local gangs have allegedly
declared war on one another publicly. One group claiming to be an
honest vigilante group
is shown on the internet with about 20 masked men with assault rifles. They
allegedly have made a public curfew after dark, and told all people to avoid
bars and travel at night.I have heard rumors that there is no
local police force, but
there is some kind of SWAT-like squad operated at the Federal or State level.

I have in-laws from the bordertown of Reynosa ( near McAllen ), and
they claim Reynosa
is safer than Nuevo Laredo.

I guess the point to this post is not to travel off the beaten path
there at night.The majority
of the local newspaper reports things like people having picnics and
quinceneras,
