Re: [Texascavers] Eagle Cave

I was out there a few years ago when Jack Skiles was still alive and had
his little museum behind his house in Langtry. I have some photos somewhere
of a raging river in the canyon after a flood event.

I received a phone call today from some guy named Jim Jasek. What a
surprise. He sounds good and and in fair spirits. We reminisced about cave
trips we were on and other stuff. It was great to hear from Jim. Our phone

Mimi,

You had a tough decision to make but ultimately it comes down to the best
care for Jim and his recovery. I feel that most of these facilities have a
handle on the COVID-19 situation so Jim should be in good hands. I'm sure
you will be able to visit by phone. Hopefully the desire to go home will
increase his drive for a speedier recovery.

Let us know of you need anything. Keep the faith and keep us posted.

I like meaningful discussions on this list serve and think it enhances our
understanding of different topics and viewpoints

and I encourage the respectful dialog of PD in Texas

I just want everybody to know that the White Nose Syndrome Protocol for the
2017 Convention of the National Speleological Society was not some arbitrary
decision
Its just the best the NSS can do and follow the rules set forth by the NFS NPS
and BLM

So with that said, Mike Harris and you have valid points.
PD could be in the seat covers and carpets of our caving vehicles
and Childress County Texas is a hell of a long way away from Culberson or El
Paso Counties

While I don't feel singled out I do think the definition of Texas as the area
is arbitrary. We are different in size than say those states back east. While
I'm absolutely not an expert, it is my understanding that the researchers did
monitoring of our typical caves in central and parts of west texas without
finding the fungus. Meaning our area is not yet a known local.

For perspective, I drove to college station on monday. On Tuesday, I drove out
east for an hour less and crossed into three different states, Virginia,
Maryland and Delaware, with Pennsylvania being less than 5 miles away from
where I stopped. Meaning, state lines might be relevant for some areas but
perhaps Texas is special, we certainly like to think we are anyway...

Thanks for listening,

Joe

Texas Cavers are not being singled out... The ban applies to all cavers and

Please read the official White Nose Syndrome Protocol for the 2017 Convention
of the National Speleological Society link below

http://nss2017.caves.org/NSS2017_WNS_Protocol.pdf

Note: Most of the 2017 Convention Caves are located on land managed by the
National Park Service, the Bureau of Land Management, and the U.S. Forest
Service. These agencies have policies prohibiting the use of gear from a
WNS-positive area; the 2017 Convention is adhering to those policies.

I appreciate and recognize some of the topics regarding the particulars of this
ban.
Example: what constitutes "gear" exactly.
Example: Many Texas Cavers have never caved in North Texas where PD has been
discovered.
However, one must also recognize that the research teams locating PD in Texas
have not looked exactly how far south PD might have traveled.
Hence the blanket Ban

In all seriousness, decon protocols and a reasonable ban on contaminated gear
makes sense. A blanket ban on all Texas gear doesn't, folks seem to forget
that state boundaries are political and have little practical relevance to the
spread of something found in a remote and rarely caved in portion of the state.
It's like saying no US gear is welcome in Mexico (hyperbole, I know).

Before I'm jumped, I appreciate all that everyone is doing to host convention,
protect our bat friends and manage government agencies that would just as
easily close caves as deal with these issues.

I'm just asking for some common sense consideration or more elaboration on the
reasoning.

There is also that dreaded trunk that all that Texas gear rode in on all those

seat of the car. This isn't totally flawless. We just need to do our best.

A woman and her grandson fell into a creek in Arizona and were washed
downstream and their whereabouts are unknown.

According to the news story, the family hopes the two are alive and that they
found a cave to shelter in.

I presume they mean one of the rock shelters along the bank of the creek.

The woman is the wife of the founder of Merrell Boot Company.

Dr. María Asunción Soriano, Profesor Titular (Associate Professor) of
Geodinámica Externa at the Universidad de Zaragoza will present a talk titled
"A Walk Through Sinkholes in the Central Ebro Basin. The presentation will
occur on Wednesday, February 8, 2017 from 11:55 A.M. to 12:55 P.M. in the
Training Room at the Edwards Aquifer Authority, 900 E. Quincy Street, San

your lunch. You may also contact the EAA at 210.222.2204 or

is still scheduled. On very rare occasions, we have had to cancel or move the
talk. I apologize for any inconvenience this may cause.

Abstract

The central Ebro Basin is an exceptional region for studying karstification.
Miocene evaporites are covered by alluvial deposits (Quaternary in age) and,
consequently, a mantled karst is profusely developed. In this scenario,
sinkholes have been developing since the Early Pleistocene until today. Present
sinkholes are one of the main geohazards in this region. They are causing a lot
of damage and economic loss especially in urban areas. Human activities, mainly
irrigation, contribute to the development of these sinkholes. Application of
research with diverse geophysical devices provides a better delimitation of
risky urban areas. In addition, Pleistocene detrital deposits of the central
Ebro Basin frequently present deformation features (both syn- and
postsedimentary) traditionally attributed to karstification. The increase of
urban areas in past years caused plenty of civil works and subsequent
activities in quarries. Consequently, a high number of excellent artificial
outcrops (up to 20 m in height) exposing Quaternary deposits and also Miocene
deposits have been generated. The study of these paleodeformation structures
(interpreted as paleosinkholes, in most cases) provides different pieces of
information about: 1) the diverse processes involved in its genesis, 2) the
evolutionary stages, 3) when dating, the length of time activity of the
paleosinkhole, 4) the presence of anomalous sediments in the general
sedimentary context, 5) the preservation of fine sediments that without
sinkholes will be eroded. Comparison of patterns between paleo and present
sinkhole are similar and, for this reason, the study of paleosinkholes can help
to a better urban planning.

Steve Bittinger posted this video (a good 16mm to digital conversion) to
YouTube, no sound and 6:28 min long, and fun

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pYpSHAi-mcg

"Published on Mar 3, 2016

Craig Bittinger and Neal Morris were high-school aged members of the Texas A
Speleological Society in Kingsville, Texas at the time this film was made in
about 1970. Tom Rankin, another member and the film's creator, was posted at
that time at the local Navy air base. The 16mm original of the film passed to
Dr. Stanley Bittinger, and then to Steve Bittinger, who created this digital
version from the original.
The film demonstrates early vertical caving techniques and equipment, such as
abseiling with a whaletail as well as the more widely used carabiners and
brakebars. Craig Bittinger demonstrates an early version of "rope walking"
using jumars, and Neil Morris demonstrates the "inch worm" system using
ascender knots. Modern vertical caving equipment, technique and focus on safety
have evolved considerably since this film was made."

Click on the map and look at the Langtry area
where the "Painted Caves" are noted on the map.

I believe the cave location shown is incorrect. I think
the caves are on the Pecos river a little east of Langtry,
but I could be wrong.

Only 85 days left until the 2015 Texas Cavers Reunion at Paradise Canyon below
Medina Lake!

The event begins when I open the park around noon on Thursday, October 15.
Currently there is good water flow at Paradise Canyon and Red has made many
improvements to it and it looks really nice. There should be more portapotties
and ice to sell. Along with the usual activities of swimming, relaxing and
socializing there will be vendors, CaveSim, rope climbing, mud wrestling,
surveying, Speleolympics, door prizes, live music, parading, clowns, flirting,
camping, wine tasting, giggling, slide shows, food, hot tubbing, hammocking,
tubing, fishing, costumes, late nights, early meetings, memberships,
fellowships, napping, cooking, smiling, beverages, clowns, books, stories,
nudity, lies, Aggies, sashaying, laughing, stumbling, beer, hugs, handshakes,
guffaws, breakfast tacos, kissing, well behaved dogs, stupid grins (ok, that's
just me), pointing, registering, planning, discussing, reminiscing, sauna-ing,
friends, photographing, Cavers, dishwashing and hopefully showering.

Like usual, well behaved pets children are welcome, PLEASE be sure to pick up
after them. Fighting dogs or people and thieves will be dealt with harshly, for
our amusement, then banished.

Traditionally the south end of the campground is the quiet end and the dam nude
end is a tad louder. Sadly, the rule still stands about percussion musical
instruments at the hot tub end. The Doo-Dah parade has a Circus theme this
year, and naturally there will be prizes for the favorite costume!

Bring your favorite camp chairs, hammocks, inner tubes, kayaks, bicycles,
bedding, tents, refreshments, snacks, cold beverages, climbing gear and survey
instruments. Don't forget, bring a good attitude and a smile! See you there!

Ok, Cavers, I'm starting to think about this upcoming TCR, locations and dates.
Paradise Canyon called me yesterday, and asked me to ask around and spread the
word that if we have any need for a meeting site, he'd be happy to help. We all
like PC, but they still have no water. It's not a deal killer. It's an option
for TSA, TCMA and TCR.
How do y'all feel about this site?

Next is the date. There have been several traditional weekends and many
suggestions etc. I've penciled in the weekend of October 15-18 as a target date.
How do y'all feel about that?

I downloaded most of them more than a year ago. I just updated with the one I
was missing and I now have
411 files (4.1 GB). If anybody wants them in
~10 large zip file links, let me know.

 Texas Cavers from v1 n1 through v59 n1 (1955-2013) have been scanned
and put on-line by the Karst Information Portal

The scans are a bit inexpertly done, but adequate. Someone ought to
download all 397 issues so that that TSA and the TSS have their own
copies of the files for archiving. Should there be a link to these on
the TSA web site? (Maybe this is already dealt with on the Member
Login page. I haven't signed up for on-line access.)

Devils River State Natural Area (Satan Unit) Karst Project -- November 8-9, 2014

The Texas Speleological Survey will be conducting a karst survey trip at the
Big Satan Unit of the Devils River State Natural Area in Val Verde County,
Texas. The approximately 18,000-acre park contains a number of known cave and
karst features that have not been adequately explored, surveyed, or inventoried
for their resource potential. In addition to the known karst features in the
park, the area has excellent potential for new discoveries. The area consists
of an upland plateau that is dissected by several steep-sided and relatively
deep canyons that are covered with rather vicious vegetation. We do have the
use of a cabin with limited bedding and amenities, so most folks will need to
plan on camping. High clearance vehicles are needed for traveling the back
roads in the park and several miles of strenuous hiking are required to reach
some of the caves and karst features. The park has several miles of riverfront
on the Devils River affording some excellent swimming opportunities.

The trip will be November 8-9th, 2014. As this will be our second project trip
to the park, the number of folks participating will be kept low until all
logistical issues have been worked out. We anticipate that there will be a
number of trips to the park over the next year or two.

If you are interested in participating on the November trip, please email me
and I'll put you on the list. We'll probably have more than enough volunteers
so I'll be keeping a backup list in case there are any cancellations. Please
contact me if you have any questions.

Hope to see you out there!
