[Texascavers] UT GROTTO VIRTUAL MEETING INVITATION

2020-12-14 Thread Underground Texas Grotto
You are invited to the next virtual meeting of the Underground Texas Grotto
On Wednesday, December 16th, at 7:30pm central time. You may join as early
as 7:00pm for socializing! (Set a reminder or add to your calendar NOW!
Please note the new social time has changed.)

Our speaker for the evening on December 16th will be Ross Winton, an
Invertebrate Biologist with TPWD, giving a presentation called Fire &
Water: Idaho & Texas Caving and Invertebrate Conservation. Idaho might not
be a major caving destination but it holds a great many hidden treasures
and a small but active group of cavers. They have been working to map and
explore caves for close to 60 years and have been vital to our current
understanding of the unique biological communities that call the Gem State
caves home. Texas on the other hand is a caving Mecca and has a long
history of caving exploration and laid the foundation for most modern
biospeleology. TPWD in partnership with universities, grottos and the
caving community has started to explore starting broader efforts to survey
and expand our work on cave invertebrates. Hear more about those plans and
how you can get involved in this underground community science.

Starting at 7:00pm central time, the Zoom meeting will be open for a social
hour, and then we will begin official business at 7:30pm. Directions to
join the meeting on the Zoom app are below.

After Ross’s talk, we will have time for Q&A - you can use the chat feature
to submit questions as they speak, or ask them yourself after they finish
telling their tales.

Once we've finished with the presentation and questions, you are free to
continue to hang out on the Zoom Meeting again for more social time.

Make sure to check out the ZOOM app before you need to use it that evening!

[Texascavers] May 6 UT Grotto Virtual Meeting Announcement

2020-05-02 Thread Underground Texas Grotto
PLEASE NOTE WE HAVE PRESENTATIONS TO OFFER EVERY WEDNESDAY FOR THE TIME
BEING!

You are invited to the next virtual meeting of the Underground Texas Grotto
On Wednesday, May 6, at 7:30pm central time. You may join as early as
6:30pm for socializing! (Set a reminder or add to your calendar NOW!)

Our speaker for the evening will be Ken Bailey who is working on the Big
Bat Cave LiDAR project. With collaboration between The Kentucky Karst
Conservancy (KKC) and Qk4, Inc., the Big Bat Cave LiDAR (Light Detection
And Ranging) project is collecting, mapping and preserving the fifty-sixth
longest cave in the world. It is their primary goal to digitally archive
the cave to know better how to preserve its history.

Cave mapping generally is collected by hand with compass and measuring
tape. Electronic distance meters are being used in cave mapping they are
based on the compass and tape survey methods collecting one data point at a
time. Cave mapping using LiDAR scanning enhances this process by collecting
millions of data points while referencing them horizontally and vertically
in 3D space.

LiDAR 3D scanning technology analyzes environments to collect data in a
point cloud. Digital 3D models of the existing features are then
constructed using software. For over a year, the KKC and QK4 have been
mapping Big Bat Cave in Breckenridge County, Kentucky with LiDAR. They
continue to develop their process in collecting and analyzing the
geospatial data and gaining valuable experience below the surface.

The research possibilities in Cave LiDAR mapping are just beginning to be
explored. Caves have been a preserved record of our past history and
climate conditions. This LiDAR data set may shed insights into these
paleo-climates and help the KKC preserve the story of Big Bat Cave.

Starting at 6:30pm central time, the Zoom meeting will be open for a social
hour and hosted by our dear friend Mary Hicks

Re: [Texascavers] Underground Texas Grotto Virtual Meeting Announcement

2020-03-31 Thread Underground Texas Grotto
The UT Grotto is doing our best to ramp up our recording and archiving of
speakers. We are doing our best to create access to grotto meetings during
this closure.

We have a youtube channel where we will post recorded meetings when we have
the personnel, equipment, and the permission from the speaker to record
their talk.

QUICK START GUIDE

   1. You don’t have to have a zoom account to join
   2. Download the app ahead of time, on both your laptop and phone.
   1. https://zoom.us/download

<https://l.facebook.com/l.php?u=https%3A%2F%2Fzoom.us%2Fdownload%3Ffbclid%3DIwAR1MkKX-haYmmRHA1Z6oWLIHBZGVmJfcpKvnqv4oQ99MCmg3_fbQ4oQro6U&h=AT3Bq98DwNZtRcDwXvKf6ic4rL-CfZaCK5hgzyEgfSgJe0pcvrR18afSeU2Zl_KrUi9cZ3gxMbuwtOW5MHphSIIFRiZdPr9AmUVbdTVR3wVLC0J1hFCUuDr64o7cgvK8ilNCkxbnVocb49mshZM9S2KrHqDGyTfw9VA>
  2. The best experience is on a laptop/desktop or even tablet since
there will usually be a presentation, but a phone will suffice if that’s
  what you have.
   3. Use the test meeting zoom provides (https://zoom.us/test

<https://l.facebook.com/l.php?u=https%3A%2F%2Fzoom.us%2Ftest%3Ffbclid%3DIwAR3ps0l52Bih23S9JOfj6a7NyAV4gMQobI3_VyliJVNr7LcAE4qG4pgy8jA&h=AT2zFpBugBgIjs_hlwXxkbh-rS2gz6--KACF275f1bx5LD16Qv9xmyWBmYTbvjMSxluKomD0fgetV8yTQge0dHQCAku1xVUdFZB4LJaEWMy2Q5UHL6_eSbBc1BoD1rY9iaEc1aL3lr0kt8Bh0bc_mIDToV2y2Q4xI_U>
   )
   1. For the test meeting you are the only one there, so to verify audio,
please use the 'test audio and mic' function
   4. Audio tips
   1. The best results are if you wear a headset (earbuds and microphone)
plugged into your laptop headset jack (or a bluetooth one). Any cheap one
will do and will make it way easier for others to hear you speak. It will
also significantly reduce any feedback and environmental noise degrading
everybody else’s audio experience while you are not on mute.
  2. If you are just listening, not wanting to talk, you can listen
  without the headset.
  3. The next best results are using the ‘connect by phone’ option to
call in from your phone and video from your laptop (ever so slightly
tedious, but it works well especially if your wifi is struggling).
  4. For audio, the worst option is to use your mobile phone with the
zoom app and connect over the network. In our experience this
was the most
difficult to understand people, but it’s there in a pinch if all
else fails.
   5. Video tips
   1. Remember you’re on video :-)
  2. If you have little bandwidth (videos are glitchy, audio isn’t
clear), you can disable your camera (

[Texascavers] UT GROTTO MEETING CANCELLATION

2020-03-13 Thread Underground Texas Grotto
Dear caver family: after new discussion with our host facility and the
leadership of the UT Grotto, I must inform you that our meetings are
cancelled through April 15. We will consider our next steps and have an
update for you on or before April 15 about the possibility of resuming
in-person meetings. Our first priority is to maintain the health and safety
of our caving community and the greater community that we operate within.
We will work behind the scenes to see if it is possible to provide
programming and/or live online interaction for you in the meantime. Please
be patient, we want to keep community interaction humming along, but all
members have additional similar situations to adapt to in our lives. If you
have suggestions for contingencies like this, AND you also have the
willingness to do the work to put them in place, send me a direct message
off list (misskarabi...@yahoo.com). I know that there are potential
platforms for us to use - I want to hear from you if you know how they work
AND can help organize the implementation of them. Your assistance will be
gratefully accepted.
We hope you will all continue to use this page to enthusiastically discuss
caving and conservation. I am personally grateful for the love, strength,
and adaptability of the caving community. I am looking forward to the time
when we can take ourselves off "pause" and go back to "PLAY"!!
Thank you for everything you're doing to care for each other in these
unprecedented circumstances. Please keep in touch, stay kind & respectful,
and be well.

[Texascavers] UT Grotto Meeting Announcement for 2/19

2020-02-18 Thread Underground Texas Grotto
The UT Grotto meets again this coming Wednesday, February 19th at 7:30 pm
at The High Road on Dawson - 700 Dawson Road, Austin, TX 78704, off Barton
Springs Road. Please, no outside food or beverages. They have happy hours
from 5-7 pm for $2-$3 beers, otherwise beer is $3-$4 and a burger with
fries is $5. Arrive early to order!

Our featured speaker for the week is Dr. Sarah Fritts, assistant professor
of Wildlife Ecology at Texas State University. She conducts research at TSU
on bat conservation across the state. Specifically, her lab uses technology
both in the field and in analysis to better understand population
variability over space and time with a goal of guiding wildlife
management. The talk will begin with an overview of threats to bats in
Texas and their current research projects aimed at conserving bats in the
state. Projects include estimating bat activity and habitat use across
Texas before white-nose syndrome causes fatalities, increasing
species-specific effectiveness of an advanced ultrasonic deterrent to
reduce bat fatalities at wind turbines, and assessing mercury exposure of
bats across Texas.

You don't need to be a member of the UT Grotto to attend this presentation
- you can learn how to become a member at the meeting, if that interests
you.

You can also learn about more caving opportunities locally, and throughout
the world. You can learn how to join several state level caving projects,
and folks are preparing for various spring break expeditions. You may hear
about other trips you can join locally, throughout Texas, and the world.
You can also learn more about how to go caving safely, and where to learn
how to do vertical work from cavers at the meeting.

Greetings Cavers,
Ah, sorry - I don't look at the email much. We are moving all the talks to
our YouTube channel! There may be some small lag from the night they are
presented until they are posted. I think the person who posts the videos is
at NCRC this week, so that one hasn't been posted yet.

It would help us make our YouTube channel more visible if you would
subscribe to our channel while you check out the talks. We need 100

started with 14 last week!

David Hillis’ lab atThe University of Texas. He will present *“Crossing to
the dark side”*, *A story of caves and convergent evolution: *The Texas
*Eurycea *clade, is a group of fourteen closely related salamanders.
Interestingly, this group has had multiple invasions of subterranean
habitats including caves and deep aquifers, while their counterparts
inhabit surface springs. Cave salamanders exhibit subterranean
characteristics, including reduced eyes and elongated limbs, while surface
salamanders exhibit well developed eyes. Together with multiple cave and
spring salamander populations, and their opposing characteristics provide
an ideal platform to examine the evolution of subterranean convergence. He
integrates different methods including microCT scans, and next generation
DNA sequencing to understand if similar molecular and developmental
underpinnings are responsible for repeated eye loss in the central Texas
*Eurycea* clade.

Re: [Texascavers] Maple Run Cave Trip 4/12/19 3 pm or 6:30 pm

2019-04-10 Thread Underground Texas Grotto
Thanks Leia.

We've got that Bexar Grotto trip scheduled for 3pm Friday, and we have a
good group together.

Anyone statewide interested in getting on a future trip, just let me know.
Caver yard camping or caver couches can be easily found in Austin. Trips
have most commonly been Sunday mornings. It's usually about a 3 hour
intermediate level climb/crawl, no vertical gear needed, with a couple
standing rooms for resting before we reach the "bottom", called "The Garden
of Earthly Delights". (a small garden;)

This South Austin treasure in the Goat Cave Karst Preserve was opened up
from what was a trash mound by William Russell and UT Grotto members. The
official monthly UT Grotto trip may be happening the morning of 4/27, that
way we can show up to Bill's memorial muddy!

Hugs,
Patty

high desert plateau situated west of the Andes, in Chile. Known as one of
the driest places on earth, the Atacama typically receives almost
non-existent rainfall. However, Terry experienced the affects of some very
unusual weather events during his visit, and has photos to share.

One more important note:
At our last meeting, new Grotto officers were elected!

Dylan Beeler returns as your UT Grotto President!
Kara Savvas will serve as your UT Grotto Vice President!
Grace Borengasser will serve as your UT Grotto Secretary/Treasurer!

If you want to present your trip report, share the results of your
research, reminisce over some moldy oldies, or teach fellow cavers a new
skill, please contact me, Kara Dittmer Savvas, to reserve a date on our
meeting schedule. If there is something you want to hear about, give me the
tip and I'll find a speaker and arrange a presentation!

If you need guidance for formally rejoining the grotto since we've turned
into a non-profit organization or want to pay your dues, please talk to
Grace Borengasser!
Also, here is the form you can fill out to rejoin-
https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLScl0Pm3YkoMCumAHmv_mXZUKVCFPgM0sFJ67_bHSQcutWGjEQ/viewform

[Texascavers] UT Grotto Meeting 1.30.19 at 7:30pm

2019-01-27 Thread Underground Texas Grotto
Greetings Cavers,

We hope to see you again this Wednesday January 30th at 7:30pm at The High
Road on Dawson- 700 Dawson Road, Austin, TX 78704, off Barton Springs
Road. Please, no outside food or beverages. They have happy hours from
5-7pm for $2-$3 beers, otherwise beer is $3-$4 and a burger with fries is $5.
 Arrive early to order! http://thehighroadondawson.com

Sean Lewis PhD will present about his recent trips to Lechuguilla. In his
own words- "I will talk about exploration in Lechuguilla Cave in 2017 and
2018 during a set of four mini-trips that I led. Our goal is finding out
what is at the bottom of the Rift: a major set of fissures on the route
into the cave. Only an hour from the entrance, it is a jumping off point
for all of the cave's major branches. Until recently, blowing leads
remained unexplored at the bottom of the Rift, and they seemed to have
significant airflow. I will describe the history of this area, and the
results from our trips including some photos, 2D and 3D plots, and video.
This is not your typical Lechuguilla talk: as is seemingly typical for me,
human suffering replaces giant rooms and beautiful formations!"

To steal a phrase from Ellie, (although I'd guess she wasn't the 1st to use
it;)

[Texascavers] UT Grotto Meeting 12/19 7:30pm

2018-12-16 Thread Underground Texas Grotto
Season's Greetings Cavers,

This coming Wednesday 12/19 at 7:30pm, Geary Schindel will present “A 3D
Photo Real Educational and Research Model of a Recharge Feature and Cave in
the Edwards Aquifer of South Central Texas". He will provide a total of 55
3D glasses for the group, so if we have high attendance, we may have to
share. If you're wondering if some 3D glasses you have at home would work,
if they are something like these, then they may do the trick-
https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Active_shutter_3D_system

In 2017 and 2018, the Edwards Aquifer Authority (EAA) contracted with Benjy
Von Cramon Productions to create a 3D photo real model of a large karst
recharge feature located in Medina County, Texas. The purpose of the effort
was to create a photographic model of the cave as an educational and
research tool. Von Cramon Productions utilized a high resolution
photogrammetric process and the EAA provided support logistics, cave
access, and oversaw safety procedures. The entrance to the cave is through
two vertical pitches, each of 25 meters in depth with approximately 400
meters of horizontal cave below the last pitch. In the early 1980’s, a
trench from a nearby creek was constructed along with a low head dam to
divert water into the feature to increase aquifer recharge. The trench
activates during large rain events and will completely fill the cave with
water within 10 minutes.

The three dimensional properties of the model allow the public to visualize
the functioning of the Edwards Aquifer. The model will also be used to
study karst processes and to assess sediment loading from recharge events
allowing for better management of the aquifer. The model includes most of
the vertical shaft and downstream portion of the cave. The model allows for
close examination of the cave through the control of lighting and scale
providing new insight into the formation of the cave.

Bio:

Geary Schindel, P.G. is the Chief Technical Officer with the Edwards
Aquifer Authority and is also President of the National Speleological
Society. Geary is a karst hydrogeologist by education and training.

Our meeting spot is The High Road on Dawson- 700 Dawson Road, Austin, TX
78704, off Barton Springs Road. Please, no outside food or beverages.
They have happy hours from 5-7pm for $2-$3 beers, otherwise beer is $3-$4
and a burger with fries is $5. Arrive early to order!
http://thehighroadondawson.com/

After the meeting, we don't plan to hang around much- There is talk of
celebrating Gill and Grace's Birthday by heading over to 37th St for a
stroll, then convening at the Posse. 😁

2018-12-03 Thread Underground Texas Grotto
Greetings Cavers,
WTF is that?: Join us at the meeting this week for Aubri Jensen presenting
us with a field guide to unusual cave formations.

Have you ever seen something in a cave and wondered how it formed or what
it can tell us about a cave? Once you start looking, there is an astounding
variety of strange, rare, and intriguing cave formations found all over the
world. This presentation is an overview of unusual cave formations in the
context of how they form and what clues they provide about what may lie
beyond them. It is based on information from Cave Minerals of the World,
and Dave Bunnel's virtual cave, with an emphasis on formations listed in
the Guads inventory used by the US Forest Service.

[Texascavers] UT Grotto "Meeting" TUESDAY 10/30 7:00pm

2018-11-21 Thread Underground Texas Grotto
Hi Cavers,
Sorry for the switcharoo this week on meeting day and time but we want to
do something fun for Halloween-

In lieu of an official grotto meeting next week, we are invited to visit
Inner Space Cavern at 7:00pm Tuesday 10/30, free of charge. Liz Herren has
been graciously getting this together for us and even though they are not
able to host us on Halloween after all, feel free to come in costume, as
long as it doesn't interfere with your ability to avoid cave formations.
Also, now your Halloween night is open to enjoy trick or treating and other
shenanigans...

We can have a quasi meeting with trip reports and announcements in the
Press Room. To get here, they also have golf carts for anyone who might
have trouble maneuvering that way unassisted. Anyone that would prefer to
sit for the "meeting" can also bring folding camp chairs, and they can
shuttle them in for us. If you're up for joining a tour of the Hidden
Passages, bring your head lamp, and helmet if you wish.

If you are planning to join us from out of town, and do not regularly
attend our meetings, RSVP and await response, so we do not overwhelm the 2
volunteer employees staying to help us for the evening. (I'm sure they'll
be happy to accept tips for their hard work, though;)

Please arrange to carpool as much as possible! Thank you Inner Space
Cavern!!

Kind Regards,
Patty Calabrese

[Texascavers] UT Grotto Meeting Oct 3rd 7:30pm

2018-10-01 Thread Underground Texas Grotto
Greetings Cavers,

Our meeting this week will be from 7:30-8:30pm in the large dining room at
Scholz Garten at 1607 San Jacinto Blvd, Austin, TX 78701. They have
generously waived the rental fee, but there will be a $50 set up fee so
bring some cash and we'll pass a hat to cover it.

*We will welcome a presentation from Bill Stone on the 2018 Sistema Cheve
Expedition.*

"At the end of the 2017 Cheve expedition an extraordinary discovery was
made some three kilometers east of the main entrance to Cheve. The new
find was initially dubbed “CL6” by the reconn team. Further discussions
with locals in the municipality revealed that the place had a proper
geographical name, so the new cave became “Cueva de la Peña Negra” – Cave
of the Black Cliff. The final push in 2017 had left off in 40 x 40 meter
borehole with strong wind so there was no question of a return. The lead
team left Austin on February 25, 2018 and a team of 40 people from 6
countries participated. The final derig crew returned to Austin on April
30, 2018. Because of an equally important discovery of a tunnel carrying
strong wind near the bottom of Cheve both caves were rigged in 2018,
consuming some 8,000 meters of rigging. A total of six underground camps
were set (3 in each cave) and it was not uncommon to have only 3-5 people
in basecamp and the remainder of the team spread across 3 or more
underground camps. All camps were linked to basecamp with a single wire
Michie phone system so that efforts could be coordinated daily. The result
of this was that an extraordinary amount of cave was discovered and mapped
in 2018. A total of 13.5 kilometers of new cave – the vast majority of
which was borehole measuring 40 x 40 meters or larger – was added to the
system, most of that in Peña Negra. The depth of Peña Negra reached 798
meters before not one but four widely separated connections were made to
Cueva Cheve. The first connection was made near Camp 2 in Cheve just above
the East Gorge in a fossil gallery first explored in 1988. With the
connections the length of Sistema Cheve increased to 46 kilometers. The
profile of the connected cave system now reveals clearly that the upper
portion of Cheve, known for over 30 years now, is just a side passage to
the Peña Negra. The lower section of Cheve also saw intense exploration
effort, with a kilometer of new cave discovered this year but no new depth.
The Grotto presentation will highlight the above discoveries and discuss
plans for 2019".

[Texascavers] UT Grotto "Meeting" 9/19 7pm

2018-09-16 Thread Underground Texas Grotto
Greetings Cavers,
We're having a non-traditional meeting this week. It should be a lovely
evening on Wednesday, so bring a chair, blanket, picnic, swimsuit, and
let's meet at Barton Springs. If we can save enough space for the group to
gather all together, we could still do trip reports and announcements
before the screening starts...

Details from The Living Springs:

"LIVING SPRINGS
Back-to-School Documentary Screening Event

The Wildland Conservation Division of Austin Water, the Save Our Springs
Alliance and Splash! invite you to join us on Wednesday, September 19th to
lay out your blanket and enjoy a selection of short films (45 minutes
total) from the on-going Living Springs documentary series. Our screening
will feature Wildlands and A Reflecting Pool.
Wildlands showcases Austin's water quality protection lands that Austin
voters purchased through open space bonds to protect the aquifer. Learn
about the diversity, history and significance of these protected lands.
A Reflecting Pool recounts Barton’s social history in the 50-year period
from 1912-1962 through the memories of those who lived it. This documentary
showcases wonderful archival photos, film and original historic
re-creations. The story follows the memories of swimmers such as John Henry
Faulk exploring the little-known history of Barton Springs before, during
and after the time of racial segregation in Austin.

A free popsicle from Good Pops for the first 200 people to stop in and see
us.

City of Austin environmental educators and local environmental groups will
be on hand before the screening to talk about how you can get involved in
community efforts to support the Springs, creeks and aquifer through
volunteering and internships.

We will gather at 7:00 p.m. near the big tree at the south entrance, Azie
Morton Road (formerly Robert E. Lee Road.) The screening will begin at full
dark and last approximately 45 minutes. Bring a chair or blanket to sit on.
Before or after the screening, take a swim in the Springs!

About Living Springs
Many stories emanate from the spring-fed water of Barton Springs. Using the
power of a multi-linear, user-driven format, viewers navigate through a
virtual underwater environment, meeting artists and scientists, historic
figures, poets and preachers who share their perspectives and their
passions about Austin’s most beloved natural resource. Living Springs is
the newest documentary from Austin Past and Present producer, Karen Kocher.

Due to weather, the grotto is no longer officially floating Town Lake.
Feel free to go, and let us know how it was. Instead we will be holding a
toast to our late friend Pete Strickland at the Posse East.

[Texascavers] UT Grotto "Meeting" July 4th

2018-07-01 Thread Underground Texas Grotto
Greetings Cavers,
If you're able, willing, and in Austin for Independence Day, get in
something that you can paddle and join us for the bat flight and fireworks
show.

When everything's over it's very pleasant to coast back dowstream with the
current, so unless you have your own special place to put in, we can
recommend parking under or as close as possible to the north side of the I
35 bridge. Let's say around 7:30. The bats decide to grace us between
8:15-8:45, and flashy boom sky sparkles are about 9:30. If you have a kind
of anchor, the fireworks display is much more relaxing without fighting the
current to stay in place.

We plan to have a flag hoisted so cavers coming from every which way at any
odd time can locate the group. I don't yet know what it will look like.

With kindest regards,
Patty Calabrese
UT Grotto Vice Chair
