Re: [Texascavers] tcr locations list

2014-08-31 Thread Butch Fralia via Texascavers
50 Years of Texas Caving is a wonderful source of caving information,
everyone should own at least two of them.

The TSA website also has some TCR history at:
http://www.cavetexas.org/events/TCR/index.html 1978-2014
http://www.cavetexas.org/events/TCR/index.html%201978-2014 .

There was a very successful spring convention at Luckenbach back when Doug
Allen was TSA Vice-Chair. It was so successful that the TSA tried to have
another there and they said their insurance only allows them three organized
events per year and they were saving them for the likes of Willy Nelson.

There was some convention there, i was there too - and the ancient owner had
a huge old cadillac and hit william's truck with it.

Nancy,
Grab your handy-dandy copy of 50 Years of Texas Caving and look on page
166. Carl Kunath lists all of the TCRs from 1978 to 2005. I don't see
another Luckenbach after the first one. On page 164 there's a list of Texas

[Texascavers] TCR thanks, and....

2013-10-23 Thread Stefan Creaser
...I'm fed up of deleting posts about Poison insert_plant_here.

Another great TCR in the bag. I hope y'all liked the food, and the fast service
provided by the dedicated Aggie crew under Laura's guidance.

I want to thank:
Don Arburn, for letting me run this (again). And for giving me the cash
afterwards!
Vico Jones for getting 3 bbq pits and the recycling cans to TCR (with help from
George, Oscar, Cuate and Gary). And for endless cooking tasks.
Tommy Joe (and team) for the chicken wings and pulled chicken.
Heather Tucek for hauling the other pit and doing the veggie food.
RD Milhollin (and team) for the potato salad
Eric Flint for the 'slaw
Andrea Croskey for the creamed corn
Matt Zappitello for the cobbler
Jocie Hooper for the banana pudding
Laura Creaser for the gelato
Leslie Bell for the breads (and who couldn't even be there!)
Various people for making the mac'n'cheese (about 6, I think, as everyone was
lining up!).

Thanks for all those people who came by and did various jobs (cutting, pulling,
cajoling, stoking, etc.) throughout the weekend, and (washing up) afterwards.
The servers going down the line with snacks. The people who made the sausages a
few weeks before. Jenni Arburn's friend for making cookies and cupcakes for the
cooks. The Aggies for dragging us over the line cutting up BBQ and other last
minute jobs (they only ever sign up to serve, but we make them really work ;-)

Hey all!
I left a headlamp that I didn't see in Don's video. It's a Black Diamond
Icon, with a AA battery pack and black and silver casing. I left it on the
lawn by the rope contest. Please let me know if you think you have it!
Thank you in advance, I'll pay for shipping if needed.

[Texascavers] TCR Weather

The weather forecast for TCR looks great!

http://forecast.weather.gov/MapClick.php?lat=29.497664922474158lon=-98.8930892944336#.UmAkDRBENqA

For the day of the big party it should be damn near perfect! We're looking
at it being mostly sunny, with a high near 75 and winds from the north to
northeast at about 10 to 15 mph. The evening will be a chilly 52, perfect
for the Hot Tub with clear sky's for star watching.

Friday there is a 70% chance it will not rain during the day and a 60%
chance it will not rain at night, however with such a large gathering of
cavers on hand it would be wise to bring the rain gear.

Also the Full Moon will occur on Friday at 18:37 CDT.

We have a large portable shelter that we can temporarily erect near the
location of the party on Friday. Don't let the forecast of rain keep you from
coming out and wishing Bill Steele a happy 65th birthday! We need people to
come and help us drink Shiner Bock and eat bratwurst and birthday cake!

there are lost item, more reunions to be. Contact me to inquire.

Cavers, you made it happen, more than three hundred and fifty of you. I merely
answered a few questions and pointed fingers. Thank you for a great,
unforgettable weekend! The memories will last a lifetime! I hope you had a good
time and if you did, please thank yourself and especially these people: our

Thanks to Whole Earth Provision Company, Shiner Brewing, GGG, TSS, TSA, Mercy
Beads Jonathan Wilson, for prizes and certificates and, I believe, our first

Chris Vreeland, thanks for immortalizing the camaraderie. Crash, thanks for
mastering the ceremony and Angela Edwards for sharing the gifts.

Kyle Leonard, thanks for bringing your Aggies, we needed the help, and they
came through!

Wesley Schumacher, good job with the wholesome earthy competition.

Thanks, Bexar Grotto for bringing some class and entertaining guests!

TCMA, thanks for starting our day-after-the-apocalypse-morning off with

[Texascavers] TCR 2012 Contests and Prizes!

2012-10-16 Thread ellie watson
Cavers,

TCR is almost here and there will be contests and prizes galore.
Contests are generally set up Saturday, October 20th mid-morning and
registration table will have specifics.

Come show off your caver skills at all the Speleolympic Contests and
win some super prizes. There will be race rope climbing, cable ladder,
rebelay ropes course, obstacle course and more. Bring your vertical
gear, helmets, and knee/elbow pads to participate in all the fun.

The Survey Contest will test your survey accuracy and give you the
chance to win a brand new set of instruments and other survey prizes.
Bring your own instruments or borrow some.

Continuing on a new tradition, we will have themed Costume Contest to
go with the parade theme! This year's parade theme is Maya Apocalypse
and rumor is there will be a good showing of costumes. Wear your
costume to the afternoon parade and then contestants can display their
costumes on stage Saturday night and let the audience vote for the
best Maya Apocalypse costume. Last year's winner was Andy Edwards from
GHG with his very convincing cross-dressing pirate outfit.

Did I mention prizes? Oh yeah! There will be some great prizes for
contest winners. No skimpy prizes here.

See you soon!!

Ellie

[Texascavers] TCR - Questions

2012-09-16 Thread Sheryl Rieck
Q1. If we would like to help get things setup, should we come Wednesday or
Thursday?
Q2. Is there a costume contest this year? And, if so, is there a theme?
Q3. Do we have the whole area this year, including the part they added a
few years ago?

Thanks,

[Texascavers] TCR T-shirt 19th Annual 1996

2012-06-21 Thread Chris Vreeland
I'm taking photos of the all TCR shirts for blog-fodder for
posterity and will get the disk with the images to the TSS as soon as
it's complete.

Spent the day yesterday digging through my garage, and spent the
morning over at Gill's digging through the T-shirt collection, and
between the two of us, we have every single TCR T-shirt EXCEPT for the
1996 19th annual. I'm sure we printed one that year, but I don't even
still have the art file.

I'm hoping that someone out there with one of these in decent shape
can take a good photograph of it, if there's anyone out there with a
spare one, I'd like to acquire it for my collection.

Thanks!

[Texascavers] TCR

2012-03-21 Thread Gill Edigar
Texas Cavers take note: The first TCR was held at Luckenbach in
1978--the better part of 35 years ago. Our original intent was to have
the Head Honcho serve for 2 or 3 or 4 years and then hand the job off
to someone else so that both the job and TCR could be kept fresh and
dynamic. Over the years the Head Honcho position has been filled by
both a group--Chuck Steuhm, Mike Walsh, and me--and by several
individuals--Mike Walsh, me, Christa McLeland, Andy Grubbs, and Allan
Cobb. It's not a hard job, but it gets old after a few years and a
Honcho's enthusiasm can wear thin with time. Allan has done an
admirable job over the past few years but has taken on some new
pursuits that he finds more rewarding than being Honcho at TCR. He's
asked that I post a public search for anyone aspiring to be Honcho for
the next few years.
As many of the events--and people that run them--are already
organized and self starters, most of that business is taken care of.
The main duties left to be done involve Site Location, Registration,
Port-O-Potties, Notification (post cards). Some of those things are
partially done and/or help is usually available for doing them, as
well. Allan and I and others remain available as mentors and problem
solvers. A little (minimal) organizational skill and a little
(minimal) authoritarian skill is required but mostly it's just
supervision and coordination that's needed. We have a
guidebook/checklist that's a bit out of date but will cover most of
the philosophy and details.
The bottom line is that we have nobody in place to be Honcho for
TCR this year. Anybody with a aspiration to take on that job should
get ahold of me (email or phone--410-303-1177) and let's talk. If
nobody comes forward there's a good chance we'll not have a TCR this
year--or maybe never again. That would be a shame.

I did see the couple of people you saw Aimee (but I was too busy to do
anything about it), I know who they are and hopefully they'll be making a
suitable donation to a caving charity in the very near future (copy of the
receipts would be appreciated ;-). Overall i'm glad the majority of people

Even thou I arrived later than I wanted, and worked more that planned, I

 All,

The big feed on Saturday would not have happened without the extreme
generosity of one person and the hard work of two others.

Please give a *big* thanks to Don Arburn for donating the beef!!!

And another to Vico Jones for butchering the steer, AND the pig (and
cooking it). Sorry to those who haven’t seen the cow butchering video on
facebook (or not, it was graphic!).

Finally to Terry Holsinger who did the majority of the legwork in getting
all the food bits together. I hope you all saw the Pirate menu or read the
description cards of the dishes :-)

And of course please thank your cooks for slaving all day over hot burners
and cutting boards, and all the time before hand in putting it together…

Denise Prendergast and Jocie Hooper – coconut bars (Pieces of Eight)
Matt Zappitello (w/Crystal LeBoeuf) – Pineapple Upsidedown cake (Cabin

Aimee Beveridge – Spicy Punkin Curry (Parrot’s Booty)

(** Galen said to me a few weeks ago that he’d like to help, but didn’t
want to do/own a whole dish. So he ended up doing two!! We appreciate that!)

And to their many helpers for

And to ASS for serving it all (and pulling that together, it’s more

Shucks! And I had to miss the name tags I had suggested for years. They help
geezers know who folks are.

There were a few people who paid their registration fee while (essentially)
standing in line. There were no wrist bands available at the time so a few
people may have appeared to not have paid but I don't think there was anyone
in line who didn't pay.

I was at the front of the line for a bit until Don Arburn took over, after
that I went down the line a few times and everyone had a band.

I did see the couple of people you saw Aimee (but I was too busy to do
anything about it), I know who they are and hopefully they'll be making a
suitable donation to a caving charity in the very near future (copy of the
receipts would be appreciated ;-). Overall i'm glad the majority of people
know what it takes to make sure everyone has a good time!

Even thou I arrived later than I wanted, and worked more that planned, I
still had a great time (perhaps more than the other years i've been involved
 - probably due to TerryH). Thanks to those who pull TCR together, and to
Dave 'Cave' McClung for manning the bar (those who missed out on that missed
out on some great drinks! - next year y'all).

I have a theme in mind for next year already, planning begins!

It was a great feed. The menu is a very nice addition. ASS did a good job
 helping.

One suggestion for next year: get someone parked in the front of the line
to sit and watch to make sure everyone has their bracelets on. There were a
few (eating with the cooks no less) that had not paid.

Anyway, there will always be those that feel entitled I guess. Or, maybe,
just maybe they really wanted to pay but the registration gurus had stepped
 away.

And thank you for everyone who stayed afterwards and cleaned up!!!

 Boy’s Delight)
Aimee Beveridge (w/?) – Cup cakes (Kraken Snacks)

Heather Tucek – Fruit Salad (Seadog Salad)
Leslie Bell – Green Salad (Jewel o’ t’ Eart’ Salad)
Terry Holsinger (w/Sandi Calhoun) – Rice and Peas (Cat o’ nine tails)
Terry Holsinger – Beans Tomatos (Drawn and Quartered)

Galen Falgout** – Escoveech Fish (Shore Leave)
Terry Holsinger – Caribbean Style Chicken (Scurvy Island Chicken)
Vico Jones – Whole Roasted Pig (The Last Mutineer)
Aimee Beveridge – Spicy Punkin Curry (Parrot’s Booty)
Umm – Caribbean Beef Stew (Scalawags Surprise)

Galen Falgout** (w/Heather Tucek) – Spinners (Rotten Doubloons)

(** Galen said to me a few weeks ago that he’d like to help, but didn’t
want to do/own a whole dish. So he ended up doing two!! We appreciate that!)

And to their many helpers for
 cutting/slicing/chopping/stirring/frying/turning/opening/etc.

And to ASS for serving it all (and pulling that together, it’s more
complicated than you think!!), and for generally being awesome for doing a
lot of final prep and help for various dishes – Smoked beef and sausage
 slices, for instance.

Thanks y’all, and very much so from me.
