I have travelled by plane alone and with my boyfriend (now ex). Last time I
went alone was from Montreal QC, Canada to Seattle, WA. Took 2 planes there and
2 back. (Mtl to Toronto to Seattle there, Seattle to Vancouver BC to Mtl back).
The long rides were 6 hrs, the short was 1.5 hrs (Mtl-TO) and 30 min (SeaTac to
Van).

I travel with my wheelchair and bring my cane and wear my long leg brace. When
I travel alone I usually get bumped to FIRST Class for FREE! I ask for seats
close to the bathroom (and often they figure since I am alone I will need more
help as I am in a chair, and they have more time to help when in 1st class).

The first time I travelled alone I was nervous about going through security,
the only time they ever gave me problems was going from Mtl to TO to Seattle.
The Mtl security (US side) was ok really, but one lady there wanted me to take
off my brace... um, I need to take off my shoes/pants.. I just looked at them
and said, it's a brace that surrounds my leg, no hollow parts, I can't hide
anything there. I was pissed, not b/c that they wanted to check it, that's
fine, but it was her attitude that really got to me. She was rude and talked
like I was mentally challenged. Um , hello, I may be in a wheelchair, but I
am perfectly capable of making conversation! Grrr...

Don't let the difficulties of travelling stop you! It sounds harder than it is,
and I was plenty worried, but it turned out just fine and I had a great flight!
(the attendents were so very nice and helpful and it doesn't hurt that I look
under 18 sometimes!).

Heather I have found that sometimes you just have to do what you have to do!!
I flew alone to be with my mom when she was in her late 80's and I was so glad
that I did. Everyone was so kind and helpful. I too use a walker and sometimes
a cane!  Long trips are awful but my son is getting married in Lima, Peru in
November and I am definitely going to be there! I have hand controls on my car
because I do not have any real control over my legs. All rental cars have
handicapped equipped cars. And they are not allowed to charge extra for the
device. There are different types but it's so easy, you catch on very quickly.
Tho it sounds like you have lots of people to ferry you around. Have a
wonderful time!! I love it when our family gets together! Cherish those
moments!
Again, ENJOY!!!

to go.  My daughter, 2 sisters and all their families are there as well as my
husbands four sisters.  So there will be lots of people to visit as well as my
old friends.  My only problem is that when I get there I have to rely on others
to ferry me around.  I can only drive with the left foot accelorator.  It is a
four hour flight which seems quite long.  I also take my air/gel filled seat
cushion from my wheelchair.

I'm glad to hear you've been able to talk with Jude. Yes, she is a wonderful
woman. I'm also glad you're able to read all of our posts and keep up with
such a great group of wounded people. I often think the pain is the worst
part of TM. I'm always happy for any TMer who has been spared from pain as it
gives me hope that mine will go away. I cringe when I read that someone has
the pain, because know one understands how it hangs on like a mad pitt bull.

It has only just occurred to me that sleeping on my back is the only way
I have slept now for years. Since the day of the attack I haven't been able to
sleep any other way, in the beginning, I couldn't move at all from that
position, I can now at least move my legs into a more comfy position. I can't
sleep with them bent up though Barb, that causes huge spasms.

Everything hurts, no matter what but it's trying to minimize the pain is
the answer isn't it? I know that when you are new to this crap it's so hard to
realise the things that you suddenly have to pay attention to. Not only what
you wear but where you are walking, avoiding anything that will brush on you.
Shopping is a nightmare when someone brushes past etc.

Since I was born being unconventional a lot of things came easily for me.
If you were not born that way, it's time to change and not give an obese

I think that this is something that most of us suffer from at some
point during our TM lives, skin sensitivity against fabric, and it's the worst
when we are trying to get some much needed sleep.

I have purchased so many sets of sheets and blankets over my TM years
(T 8-10, 6/1/99), and I have had this sensitivity for most of that time. It
started as sensitivity and is so often PAIN. I've gone from egyptian cotton,
very good quality flannel, jersey (like T-shirt material) and all sorts of
thread counts of cotton. In sheets, I think that most of the time, my most
comfortable sheet happens to be the jersey. I'm not saying that I can always

I was diagnosed in 2002 C 4-C 6 I am having problems with balance . My
hands and feet have started back to being extremely cold and sometimes hot. Any
suggestions from anyone. I had surgery in 2007 to remove the disc. They were
pressing on the spine. It was very successful, however it seems as if I am going
backward with a lot of muscle weakness, bladder and bowel problems. What Can I
do? for 7 years I have been doing very well. I have never really had pain
except when I would pull a muscle in my back. Almost pain free from the time I
contracted the disease. I stayed in rehab and hospitals where I lost all muscle
strength. With therapy on a daily basis I overcame until this sudden backward
spiral. I was taken off neurontin for a couple of month to try something
different have to take an EMG on next month. I am trusting God to touch, heal,
and deliver me from this terrible disease

position, I can now at least move my legs into a more comfy position. I can't
sleep with them bent up though Barb, that causes huge spasms.

Everything hurts, no matter what but it's trying to minimize the pain
is the answer isn't it? I know that when you are new to this crap it's so hard
to realise the things that you suddenly have to pay attention to. Not only
what you wear but where you are walking, avoiding anything that will brush on
you. Shopping is a nightmare when someone brushes past etc.

Since I was born being unconventional a lot of things came easily for
me. If you were not born that way, it's time to change and not give an obese
rodent's derriere what anyone else thinks. Find what works for you and don't
worry about what the normal people are doing.

I think I've just about got my life into a reasonable degree of comfort
but sometimes it just changes again.

hugs all
Gilly

I am such a happy camper with my cotton knit. Such a miraculous
fiber. Isn't it great when we find something that works for us, most of the
time It's just amazing! It's definately a game of trial and error, that's
for sure. Life is so much fun when you have TM.

The majority of my sensitivity is in the evening and during the
night. There are times when I cannot even stand skin to skin contact. That's
why I sleep on my back with my knees bent many nights.

  Take care everyone!

I think that this is something that most of us suffer from at some
point during our TM lives, skin sensitivity against fabric, and it's the worst
when we are trying to get some much needed sleep.

I have purchased so many sets of sheets and blankets over my TM
years (T 8-10, 6/1/99), and I

Absolutely Janice,

I was like a Raggedy Ann doll.  Totally floppy from the waist down, couldn't
sit without being propped up, and no matter what position my legs were put in,
they flopped.  It is painful to look back and see what I was like when TM
happened, but good to see how far I've come.  I often forget about all that has
happened to me, all the strange little occurances as well.  I could write a
book, but then, I really wouldn't want to write it all down, and surely, I
doubt anyone would want to read as much of it as there is.

We've come a long way baby!

Hugs to all! Barbara A

You reminded me of my old hospital days where I could not turn over without
help, or slide up in the bed.   When you can

look back and see where your body has actually gotten stronger - even with the
problems TM has left us - you realize how

fortunate we are.   I am comparing us to 2 people I know that are dying of
cancer.   Parts of our lives are the pits, but we

know we have our lives to live and in most cases, improvement to look forward
to.  Jance

I, TOO, AM FORTUNATE THAT I DON’T HAVE ANY SKIN SENSITIVITY.  I ALSO DON’T HAVE
THE PAIN SO MANY OF US HAVE.  I DO HAVE A SPASMS IN MY LEFT LEG ONCE IN A
WHILE.  IN FACT, I CAN CAUSE A SPASM BY TURNING MY LEFT FOOT TO THE LEFT AND
ALL OF A SUDDEN I CAN FEEL A SPASM.   WHEN I GOT TM AND WAS IN THE HOSPITAL I
WAS UNABLE TO TURN OVER AND HAD TO SLEEP ON MY BACK WHICH WAS ALSO SO
UNCOMFORTABLE BEFORE.  I FOUND THE HOSPITAL BED PROVIDED SOME RELIEF AS I COULD
RAISE THE HEAD OF THE BED SO I WASN’T SO FLAT ON MY BACK.  I WAS EVEN NOT ABLE
TO LIFT MY LEGS UP IF THEY SLID OFF THE SIDE OF THE BAD AND HAD TO RING FOR A
NURSE.   I HAVE A STRONG RAILING ON THE SIDE OF MY BED WHICH MADE IT POSSIBLE
FOR ME TO FINALLY TURN OVER.  I HAVE IMPROVED TREMDOUSLY AND AM ABLE TO TURN
OVER WITHOUT MUCH ASSISTANCE.  ONE OF MY PROBLEMS THIS PAST WINTER WAS I WAS
ALWAYS SO COLD???  I SLEPT IN FLANNEL NIGHTGOWNS AND AT LEAST 3-4 BLANKETS.  IT
WAS THE ONLY PLACE I COULD GET WARM.  WITH WARMER TEMPS I AM NOW ABLE TO SWITCH
TO SUMMER SLEEPWEAR.  AS MUCH AS I FEEL SORRY FOR MYSELF AT TIMES, I KNOW HOW
VERY LUCKY I AM THAT I DON’T SUFFER MANY OF THE PROBLEMS A LOT OF TM’ERS DO.
MY MENTAL OUTLOOK HAS IMPROVED TREMDOUSLY, WHICH I THINK IS BECAUSE=2
0OF ALL THE SUPPORT FROM ALL OF YOU ON THIS WEB SITE.

I am s fortunate that I don't have the skin sensitivity that so many of you
talk about.    If I pull up something really soft, like my gown or robe, I will
spasm for a minute, but I don't really have pain, just discomfort and only for
a minute.   I would think that

the cotton knit would be a blessing.   I like 100% cotton to sleep in for
summer - it helps keep me cool.

Yep, so much the same and so very different. That's just another reason this
list is so wonderful, there are so many solutions offered to all sorts of

Janice, I am now able to move enough to get on my side but the pain is
intolerable in that position and I can't do the pillow between the legs thing.
I think it might be because they are too short and far too fat!

Just thought I'd let you know that I am completely opposite. I can
not sleep on my back. I really spasm around my middle
section trying to get in that position and trying to get back up is a
nitemare. I stick to sleeping on my side with a pillow between
my legs to lessen spasms. Also take baclofen for spasms - helps a
lot. I also have developed a thing of needing to have
air movement when I go to bed. I have the ceiling fan going on no
matter what the room temperature is. I just need air movement.
This has really been an adventure/nitemare. Love the support of
family and friends - and other TM'ers!
