Re: [SlimDevices: Touch] Touch behaving odd - advice appreciated

2010-05-03 Thread Amagerland

Thanks Toby10,
The signal strenght was 50%. I moved the touch to a new location,
signal strenght is now 78%. But the problem is still there.
Let me give you another example.
I have the files from my usb running. Then I go to my home menu. There
is the option of hitting Internetradio. I do that, and radios play
fine. But the options of hitting apps or Favourites are blanked
out. If I hit apps I get the message saying my login to mysb.com is
wrong. If I hit Favourites I am told it is empty.
But if you shut down sbs and manually select mysb.com, then internet
radio is fine again. I find it very strange... the only conclusion I
can find is, that SBS is in conflict with mysb.com in some way. But, as
you point out, other user do not experience this.

Re: [SlimDevices: Touch] Does Touch support Apple Lossless or not

2010-05-03 Thread bpa

There is a bug in 7.5.0 with Apple Lossless decoding on servers so it
affects all players. Upgrade to 7.5.1. and this fixes it for most users
although not all and so there is a bug open requesting samples of
offending files.

Native support is supposed to supported in Touch but there is a bug or
performance issue with native decoder so native support is disabled by
default in current versions. If you want to see if you encounter the
bug or not, I believe you can enable native support by uncommenting a
line in convert.conf and restarting SBS

Re: [SlimDevices: Touch] 24/96 Perfromance Issue ( Solution!)

2010-05-03 Thread rotho

I have been following this thread very carefully, because I was very
interested in the Touch abilities to read 24/96 files and to go without
a PC (by using Tiny SC), and unfortunately, I am experiencing serious
problems with that configuration, when using an external HDD (but not
when using a USB stick).

Here are my findings (when using Tiny SC to read 24/96 files) :

1) The configuration with constant rebuffering problems (so completely
unusable) is when connecting my LaCie d2 quadra 1.5 To HDD, which is
FAT32 formatted, and which contains for the moment 1200 albums
(approximately 16000 flac files, 400 GB used).

Here is an extract of the top command results in that configuration :

Mem: 123516K used, 2308K free, 0K shrd, 84K buff, 36144K cached
CPU: 59% usr 4% sys 33% nic 0% idle 0% io 1% irq 0% sirq

/usr/squeezecenter/slimserver.pl --charset utf8 --noweb --notranscoding

5 2 root SW 0 0% 0% [sirq-timer/0]
7 2 root SW 0 0% 0% [sirq-net-rx/0]

2) I then tried another configuration, by using a 4GB USB stick
(containing of course only a couple of albums...), with the same
problematic 24/96 files, and I had absolutely no problem when reading
those files (apart from the very beginning of the first track).

Here is an extract of the top command results in that configuration :

Mem: 123528K used, 2296K free, 0K shrd, 200K buff, 43900K cached
CPU: 56% usr 7% sys 0% nic 29% idle 5% io 0% irq 0% sirq

716 689 root S 7040 6% 10% jive_alsa -d default -c
default -b 2 -p 2 -s 24 -f 1
715 689 root S 7104 6% 4% jive_alsa -d plughw:2,0 -b
2 -p 2 -s 16 -f 2
9 2 root SW 0 0% 4% [sirq-tasklet/0]

49 2 root SW 0 0% 1% [IRQ-34]
816 815 root R 2724 2% 1% top
812 639 root S 2528 2% 0% dropbear -i
5 2 root SW 0 0% 0% [sirq-timer/0]
7 2 root SW 0 0% 0% [sirq-net-rx/0]

So, I would like to find where is the problem when reading the files
from my 1.5 To HDD. Is it the amount of files ? Is the HDD not fast
enough (it is a recent 7200 rpm model) ? Should I change my USB cable
(It is a standard 1.5 m cable) ?

I must add that I have no problem when reading these 24/96 files from a
similar 1.5 To HDD formatted in HFS+, with the external server running
on a Mac (in a wired configuration).

When examining the traces of the top command, I noticed that the perl
slimserver.pl command was using a great memory amount, and a great CPU
amount in the problematic configuration. When reading the others posts
in this thread, I saw mentions of the jive command, but not of this
perl command. Could that be the problem ?

Again, any help would be greatly appreciated...

 gives?

First you MUST Upgrade to 7.5.1 - if that doesn't work, disable Native

hopefully will be fixed soon.

In any case, the above seems to get rid of the skips, be it by
 reducing CPU load or down-sampling.
Ignore the bitrates - they are a complete red herring.

John S

I, like many others above, are actually wired with the issue not
wireless. I resolve with streaming PCM. So, wouldn't it suggest a
decoding /cpu issue?

Whilst streaming pcm to the wired Touch is OK, it does mean that I have
to stream pcm to the other SB's in my house which then takes up more
bandwidth.
That's not often an issue but it does mean that a proper technical
solution for this issue would be better to have.

96/24 playback was the defining feature of the Touch for me so I do
hope it is given some attention at HQ.

What version FW is your Touch?
What version SBS did you use to update Touch FW?

Beta versions of SBS point to a different test-MySB server so I wonder
if that is where your Touch might be getting confused.
No MySB account is needed for the Internet Radio menu items.

Few things to check:
- Verify your MySB login info is correct on Touch (unfortunately this
is not easy to do).
- When Touch is connected to MySB, log into your MySB account with
your computer, go to Players and verify Touch is actually connected to
that account.
- Use MySB Remote Control to try controlling your Touch.
- See if your station Favorites are correctly listed on this web UI.

Inspect it prior to placing final seal on the box?

[SlimDevices: Touch] Standalone Touch

2010-05-03 Thread Zibi

I've just bought Touch decided to join this nice Forum. Thanks all for
sharing information.

I am still at testing stage, first impressions are very good, however
more i would share soon. One nice thing is volume control over optical
TOS cable - never seen before but this is quite useful!

Unfortunately i have small problem:
Principally i would like to use touch as music player from USB - TOS
(S/PDIF), so i do not need permanent internet access. Actually i do not
have possibility to keep connection 24/365. But without being online
Touch looses a lot. No screen savers and even lack of possibility to
switch it off!

Is there any possibility (except the one in the initial options work
without connection) to run it in offline mode and predefine things
like shutdown=screen of (after certain time, or a song) or at least to
display a photo (dimmed display)?

Re: [SlimDevices: Touch] Serving more than 2 additional squeezeboxes

2010-05-03 Thread DigitalMitch

I'd proceed with extreme caution.

My Touch struggles to serve to one radio and one receiver (the
streaming half of the duet) as well as itself.

It will rarely work well with just one other unit.

I think many of my problems may be down to large collection 20,000 FLAC
and the fact that this is all wireless. I am hoping that some
improvements will come over time.

The Touch server is very Squeezed and so extra load can degrade
performance, e.g. using picture viewer or the fancy Now playing
displays when pushing the limit.

So, based on my experience below the recommended limit, I think you may
also struggle.

That said, when driven by a p.c. or server based SBS, it is fantastic.
So get them and use as controller/players (looks like you've got the
computers to host full SBS).

exact. I would like to hear from more user: is this what we can expect.
Is there no fix? I bought the Touch specifically because it do not want
my computer running as a server.

Same problems here, Amagerland. As far as I'm concerned, switching
between USB drive, SD card and internet radio should be seamless.
Right now its not.

So I have been eagerly waiting for the Touch, especially because of the
embedded server and 24/94 capability. Unfortunately, I have to say I'm
 having an horrible experience:

 - I have an external drive with 120GB of music (with its own power
supply). The embedded server fails, I would say, 4 out of 5 times it
tries to scan the drive. Most of the times it blocks for no obvious
 reason. No error messages, nothing
I agree. The Touch - used as a player with an external server - works
fine and gives superb audio quality.

While I was able to successfully use the internal server with a 2GB
flash drive, I've yet for it to fully scan my external USB drive with
46,000 songs without crashing (and I've tried 2 different drives.)

The biggest frustration for me is that they delayed release four months
to fix the internal server so that things would be perfect for the mass
market consumer. Given the widespread problems with the internal server
after that long delay, I'd sure hate to think just how persnickety Tiny
SBS was last December!

What you propose will only work if you have SBS running on the Buffalo
NAS. The Touch has a built-in SBS, but it will only access external USB
drives or SD memory card directly connected to the Touch. The Touch's
built-in SBS will not reach across the network to grab files from a
NAS.

I agree with the idea that rescanning from the SBC/Radio/Touch would be
nice (although to be honest, I can't remember the last time I wanted to
trigger a rescan from a player). But I completely disagree with your
lowest-common-denominator of that last statement. Why take out
functionality that is useful? What if a user doesn't have any SqueezeOS
device -- they should suddenly lose a feature? That makes no sense. The
systems are different and they will never appear exactly the same, so
forcing a near-consistency seems backwards to me, especially when it
means removing features.

Also, isn't rescan implemented as a plugin? If so, then users who are
really bothered by having a featuer on an ip3k player that isn't on a
SqueezeOS player can remove it from the old players at their
discretion, rather than Logitech eliminating the feature wholesale.

Re: [SlimDevices: Touch] Rescan SBS from Touch Interface

.and to further confuse things

I think people who use the SBS rescan from older players to their full
SBS running on their computer will assume that Touch's start/stop SBS
will perform this same function.
Those using Touch's inbuilt server will know this, but I'll bet those
using full SBS will assume otherwise.

This is why I've suggested that Touch's inbuilt server should be
renamed.
As it stands now, when using a Touch in the network, SBS stands for
both the Touch's limited inbuilt server (TinySC?) and the full SBS 7.5
computer server.

I use Touch's inbuilt server to connect four players. Touch, Boom, SB3,
Radio.

It's an odd beast this TinySC as it will allow all four players to
stream for days without a hiccup, but then will crash numerous times in
one day.
Stability seems to be much better when Touch is not currently
streaming, but all three connected players are streaming from Touch.
I can only surmise that the Touch's screens (Now Playing visualizers)
are just too CPU intensive, causing such crashes.

Most recent example: Been streaming Internet Radio Music Services
via TinySC for the past four days without a hiccup.
I've played with several usage scenarios (synced, not synced, Music
Services, 320k streams)
- Touch is in standby (utilizing the Daylight Clock screensaver), using
WiFi
- Radio Boom streaming 24/7, both using WiFi
- SB3 streaming few hours per day, wired

After spending 10 years in high-tech manufacturing, there's a whole host
of reasons to either singly or mass-open boxes of new stuff. Don't
sweat it - a factory seal is a factory seal.

Sending it back just puts you in the pool of open-box disappointments -
1% DOA, .5% scratched, (whatever), etc..

MY guess was for firmware update prior to shipment. The Touch was
really delayed, due to software. There were probably a bunch that were
made risk-shippable to keep the factory running, and someone
determined the risk was too great, so a pallet or 2 needed to be
reflashed.

Put it this way - your unit's been through extra QA! :-)

One of the amazing facts about modern electronic product manufacturing
and customer support is that nearly all returns are for perfectly
working products. Sure, the 1 % DOA and a part of one percent
cosmetically imperfect numbers are there, but that leaves about 98%.

Usually, of that 98 percent, 95% or so are perfect when tested.

I don't understand the human psychology that causes folks to return good

Think that you might be onto something with the power adapter plate

would be. So opening a box to change the adapter plate to make it an EU

As to the question if it was for firmware update, I highly doubt it.
One reason the Touch needs an Internet connection at setup is for

And again, if its a factory, I think there is not much to worry about.
Its to soon for any type of return to be back into the system.

It is always recomended practice to wire the server to the router.
Then it gives that if the Touch *IS* the server then wire the Touch,
for best stability/performance.

This is probably also behind the recomended two player limit .

You get double wifi hops from server to router from router to player.
so you use up twice the wifi capacity needed per player.

This can absolutely work in a small installation with mp3 files.

But it would give -any- server problem in a larger scale (more
players) with lossless and hirez files .

Hello and Welcome to the Forum.

TinySC when running the Touch in standalone mode uses most of the
memory resources so plugins and Apps have no place to reside or enough
memory to run.

Also, I don't think full time Internet access is absolutely necessary
foe everything you are looking to do. I will see what I can figure out
what can and can't be done but this would require running a local SBS
server in my opinion.

Others on the Forum have used this stuff more then I have. Basically, I
did it once to verify it could be done during the Beta testing. I use my

Hi rotho,
thanks for the detailed info.

The perl line is the actual server, its written in perl so the process
is actually the perl interpreter running the server code. Jive is the
player (now known as squeezeplay). The Server reads the files and sends
the data to the player which decodes it and sends the raw data to the
jive_alsa process which sends it to the hardware. All three have to be
up and running and getting their share of CPU cycles to make the
process work.

Its very interesting that the server is running so much higher cpu with
the HDD as opposed to the USB stick. Does the server stay at around this
number all the time or does it only occasionally get that high?

If its running that high most of the time, I would think the next step
would be to run some profiling on the perl code to see where its
spending its time. I've never done that so someone else who is more
familiar with perl profiling will have to help with that.

process work.

Re: [SlimDevices: Touch] Experiencing Touch for a couple of days

2010-05-03 Thread artmaltman

Well I'm getting great sound via analog or and even better via digital
outs into a DAC, and the SDHC card (32GB) works great, and internet
radio works perfectly, and connection to my Mac-based server is
superb.

USB hard connection is not ready for prime time.

And switching from controlling the player using direct touch to the
remote and back works fine, but switching to a player on my Mac is just
about hopeless.

On balance, though, I am thrilled with this thing and already bought a
second one for the bedroom, and can see my days of owning a standalone
CDP being numbered.

The functionality that works well is flat out spectacular.

Re: [SlimDevices: Touch] Experiencing Touch for a couple of days

2010-05-03 Thread JohnSwenson

There is a distinct difference in what happens between ending one song -
going to the next in playlist AND pressing the skip button.

In the case of a song ending and going to the next in the playlist it
starts reading the next file while the end of the current file is still
playing, that way its ready to switch streams on the fly without any
interruption.

When you press the skip button it has to go off right now and find the
file and start reading the data. It buffers some data up and starts
playing it. There is a tradeoff here as to how much data it reads
before starting the playback. It sounds like the system is set for
reading a small amount of data so it can start playing quickly, but
with hirez (or maybe hirez and flac etc) thats not really enough and
the initial buffer gets emptied before it can fill the next buffer, so
a stutter happens.

When automatically ending one song and going to the next on the
playlist its easy to grab a fair amount of data so you don't have a
dropout, with the skip button it takes some tuning to get the right
tradeoff between no dropouts and time you have to wait before music
starts.

Unfortunately that tradeoff seems to be different for different setups.
For example I never have a problem with it at all, I can play -8 encoded
flacs 24/96 files off the USB drive and skip between songs and never
have a problem. Other people have problems when skipping ahead but not
when automatically going from one to the next, and others seem to have
have problems all the time no matter what. So far we haven't figured
out what the differences are that cause these discrepancies in
performance.

Hi John,

I have made more tests this evening and here are the successive values
of the CPU usage of the perl slimserver.pl process :

1) When using the HDD :
1.1) With a 24/96 file :
32%/46%/43%/45%/52%/30%/42%/51%/47%/44%/32%/51%/36%/35%/57%/31%/37%/48%/24%/54%/38%/31%/56%/32%/37%/50%/27%/48%/38%/30%/...
And so on... The server process does never go under 20% and the Touch
is constantly rebuffering

1.2) With a 16/44.1 file :
29%/50%/56%/28%/2%/2%/1%/1%/1%/1%/2%/2%/1%/...

2) When using the USB stick :
2.1) With a 24/96 file :
17%/12%/5%/4%/5%/4%/4%/...
And no rebuffering problem ...

2.2) With a 16/44.1 file :
23%/4%/2%/1%/2%/1%/...

A little precision : for tests 1.1) and 2.1), I was always starting
from scratch (Touch unplugged, USB device unplugged), and then I waited
until the re-analysis of the files on the USB device was completed.
Tests 1.2) and 2.2) were done immediately after tests 1.1) and 2.1),
without turning off the Touch.

Do you think that the problem could come from the great number of files
on the HDD ? If you think it would be useful, I could make a test where
I erase the contents of the HDD (I have a complete backup on its HFS
formatted twin), and try the HDD with only the same couple of files as
on the USB stick. What do you think ?

Anyway, thank you very much for your time.

Yeah, that is normal and intended. It ships with one year old factory
FW, connects to MySB.com upon initial setup, downloads the latest FW
from MySB.

I thought you may have been saying it had the latest 7.5 FW when you
unboxed it, which would have clearly indicated it was actually used and
returned.
It is clear this is not the case.

 I've not heard a Duet though...assume it's on a level with the SB3

Regarding the Touch dac vs the Caiman dac
The Touch is a VERY big improvement over the SB3 and I would guess the
 same jump over the Duet.

Compared to the Caiman dac, I find it to be not as good. To be honest
though, if I never had the dac I would probably be happy - it sounds
better than the SB3 into the Beresford, so that tells you how good it
 is as a transport.
But sound quality wise, the Touch thru the Caiman sounds quite a bit
 better to my ears.

Thing is, my Caiman has been upgraded from standard, and I didn't have
the Touch before I had it upgraded, so can't comment on the standard
dac. Others are using it with a Transporter as a transportthe
standard dacso guess that's an answer?

Buy a Touch, it will be a substantial upgrade over the duet..either on
it's own or through the dac.

Thanks Gazjam. Do you know anything more about why would Touch be a
better transport than the previous Squeezebox players? What's so
different in terms of just receiving, buffering, and pushing digital
bits and bytes into the DAC?

Re: [SlimDevices: Touch] how to open up the squeezebox touch?

2010-05-03 Thread JohnSwenson

The S/PDIF output circuit is actually quite good, much better than what
is in the SB3. The biggest bang for the buck there is to get rid of the
RCA jack and put in a true 75ohm BNC. Thats going to be the biggest
improvement. Not so easy to do, you have to keep the impedances to the
board etc correct.

Now as for opening it up:

It comes in two pieces, front and back plastic case, the front has the
display attached and the back has the board attached. In between is the
umbilical for the display, this is two flexible PC (FPC) assemblies, one
one small (for power) and one wider (for signals). These are permanently
attached to the display and go into connectors on the board attached to
the back. There is very little slack on these FPCs, this is the main
problem with taking it apart and getting it back together.

You have two approaches here: take the cables out of the connectors and
separate the two pieces OR leave the umbilical in place unscrew the
board from the back case.

Taking the FPCs out of their connectors is quite easy, but it is a
royal pain getting them back in correctly without damaging anything
when putting it back together. In the other approach you keep the
umbilical in place and clamshell the two halves, opening up a small
space between them and getting a small screwdriver in to take out the
screws holding the board to the back case. You do this for all four
sides. All the screws are around the periphery of the board so this can
be done. Be careful not to exert too much tension on the FPCs, you don't
want to rip anything or cause them to come out of the connectors (the
connectors are latching, the FPCs are held quite well in their grasp).

Its hard to say which is the best approach, I've done it both ways and
its about equal amount of swearing either way.

Even if you go for the disconnect the FPCs route you still have to
unscrew the board from the back, all the interesting stuff is on the
side of the board between the board and back.

Currently you have taken off the silver foot and the two screws that
hold the front and back together. At this point the only thing holding
them together is friction, there are no more fasteners or latches or
any such. You just have to pull them apart. A thin blade such as a
putty knife might be helpful in trying to pry them apart. Once they DO
come apart make sure you don't put much tension on the FPC. You DON'T
want to grab the front and back and put huge force on them, and then
have them explosively separate and rip the FPCs out. Gentle
persuasion works better.

In addition to the above there are two twisted pair going between the
front assembly and the board (the microphone and the speaker). These
have connectors and are easy to remove, just make sure you draw a
picture noting the orientation of the colored wires so you can put it
back together the right way.

After you have the board unscrewed from the back you have to get the
board out of the back. This isn't easy. The board fits under a lip
molded into the case, the fit is VERY tight. I found the best way to
get it out is to hold the back in your fingers and use your thumbs to
apply pressure to the connectors on the back, pushing them back in,
this will force the board out of the back case.

Now on to what to do once you HAVE it apart. The first thing is to
bypass the caps on the analog outs, they are not needed, getting rid of
them makes a big improvement in sound.

Next I would work on the power supplies. There are two switching DC-DC
converters inside, they supply the 1.2 and 1.4 volts for the processor.
One of these also supplies 10V to a 5V regulator which drives the DAC
chip. So even though the DAC chip is 5V it is NOT run off the main 5V
supply, they did try and isolate it from what is going on inside the
box.

I would build an external supply that had two 5V supplies, one for the
main input, and one very good one for the DAC chip. In addition it will
provide the 1.2 and 1.4V for the CPU. You can't just replace the DC-DC
converters with linear regs in the box, they would dissipate too much
heat. There are no ventilation holes and its a plastic case, the heat
from these regs would fry the insides.

Next would be the oscillators. They are just regular logic gate and
crystals, same as used in the SB3. The power rails in the Touch are
cleaner so you DO get lower jitter, but its possible to get even
better. I would build a tiny board with two low jitter SMD oscillators
and a really low noise regulator and install that over the main board
(there is a LITTLE room between the board and case) with very short
pigtails going down to the main board to replace the crystals.

Thats what I would do for first level mods.

There is a lot of work that could be done on the headphone amp, but
anybody REALLY into headphone listening is probably already using an
external headphone amp connected to the analog outs or to an external
DAC.

That should keep you busy for awhile!

If nothing else, you might find that you can buy the Touch on sale and
then turn around and sell the Receiver unit only from your Duet set and
not have your out-of-pocket be all that much.

Receivers are out-of-stock in the USA right now from new retailers. As
such, used ones are going for a premium. Amazon has one listed used for
$195 and the last one I saw sold on eBay last week went for over $200.

I am an audiophile on a budget, so I have opted for using Duet with an
external DAC (Beresford Caiman), instead of going with the much more
expensive Transport. Some reports claim that Beresford Caiman can match
(and even surpass) the DAC that Transport internally uses.

However, what is not clear to me is whether the Transport is a better
'transport' for digital signal than Duet or Touch.

I am pretty certain that Beresford Caiman is a better DAC than the one
that is shipping inside the Touch. What I'm asking here is should I
consider replacing my Duet as a 'transport' with Touch? Is Touch a
better transport than Duet? Keep in mind that, regardless of whether I
upgrade Duet or not, I will be keeping my Beresford Caiman as an
external DAC, and will bypass whatever the internal DAC may be.

Also, I am not at all interested in convenience (don't care about the
user interface, pretty pictures, touch or wheel etc.), only interested
 in improving the sound.

Where is the down side here?!

Everybody needs more then one Squeezebox. So buy the Touch, I think you
will like it and use the Duet's Receiver in another room.

The Touch is very good on the analog side and in my opinion (testing
and listening) is better then both the SB3 and Receiver. On the Coax
Digital side, I again think it is better then both the SB3 and Receiver
from listening and testing. I think the Touch will make a great digital
transport for use with a very good DAC. The Touch is so good that I
think one needs a much better external DAC now if one is not going to
use the analog section in the Touch.

I think the Transporter is still better (especially in the analog side)
and now for the but, but its a much harder decision now because the
Touch will make a very good digital transport.
