The Touch (with or without attached disk) is a computer
A NAS is a computer.
A VBA is a computer.
A PC/MAC etc is a computer.

To choose between them, one should consider:

1) Cost of Purchase
2) Total Cost of Ownership (power consumption, upgrade costs, repair
costs, lifespan etc)
3) expandability
4) form factor and aesthetics
5) location and mechanical noise/radiated heat
6) reliability
7) ease of use
8) functionality and performance

Everyone is going to score these criteria differently.

And even if you won't stream to other areas keeping the server away from
the hifi is a good thing anyway, ethernet cable can be 100m long.

I've never used the VBA how quiet is it ? even if its fanless some
harddrive whirring could be heard.

Having a PC in hifi rack eh .

I do stream to multiple players.
But i still connect my Touch with ethernet .

Another thing a wifi router the best placement for use with your laptop
or phone or similar might not be the hifi rack .

When I get more ethernet ready stuff in my hifi rack I would simply
place a switch there.
My hifi already suffers from the "to many boxes syndrom" :-/

Re: [SlimDevices: Touch] Setting presets on the Touch?

2010-11-12 Thread Mnyb

Hi

http://bugs.slimdevices.com/

file bug.

I Would prefer the old style thing like it used to be with the SB3
(classic) that the number buttons where connected to the favorite
list.

Presets.

Not possible to edit in the web-UI !!(major case of brain fart to not
implement this)

Can only be as many as there are buttons 1-6 on boom or radio .

But they are per player so every player can have different presets .

Favorites.

Are per server so the list applies to all players on the server, but
they can be as many as you want as far as i can remember . I can not
remeber if it where possible to choose favorites above 9 or not ?

The favorite list can still be used with the menu system and arrows.
So it's only it's connection to the 1-9 buttons that has been removed.

Favorite can still be added and edited in the web-UI .
On mysqueezebox.com the favorite list has the limitation that it can
not have subfolders.
A really complicated favorite menu can not be entirely navigated by the
number buttons, but you would assign the most used ones a sensible place
in the favorite list (1-9)

The ideal compromise would be a favorite list per player that could be
used with number buttons, this will satisfy both functions.
And be possible to edit in the web-UI .
And keep the ability to assign buttons by pressing them for a long
time.
There could also be a user setting to keep using a the global favorite
list with the number keys.
Both should exist at the same time.

Btw you can not use presets on the SB3 (aka classic) either with the
never version of the server nor does the number button go to favorite
list they do nothing usefull there either ? This makes even less sense
why remove a working function on an old product and replace it with
nothing ? The devs have limited time and resources why spend this time
making the product worse not better ?

Sorry, but that's just wrong. I just did a reboot on my Touch and it
didn't clear the network or wifi settings or anything else. It didn't
even clear the playlist that was active at the time I rebooted. As
noted earlier in this thread, there is a difference between rebooting
via the button (give it a short press), versus using the button for a
factory reset (press and hold the button for ~15 seconds). The latter
_will_ clear network settings. The former will not.

I know, I know, everybody is telling me I'm crazy to use the Touch as a
server, and they are most likely right. For now, the Touch works
perfectly for me as a server, for zero additional cost and minimal
additional power.

But I suspect I may get to that eventually, especially if I start
adding other SB devices... Actually, rather than using one of these low
power servers, I personally would use a Linux netbook, that would give
me both a server and a UI in a single low power box. Moreover, because
it's a higher volume product, in theory it's cheaper and more tested.
We were supposed to have ARM netbooks by now, I wonder where they
are...

>From what I read, the Touch is quite picky about the hard drive it
likes. You can check the various threads about that.

You would need to give a bit more context about "won't connect". Is it
after pluging the HDD to the Touch ? Is it after powering on the Touch
with the HDD attached ? Is it after leaving the Touch idle for some
time ?

A first indication would be to check the status of the server in the
advanced options (where you enable/disable the internal server). After
that, looking at the internal log, but that's beyond my knowledge.

A fitPC2 running linux makes a great server, at only 5W or so. You can
put a SATA 2.5 drive right in the case and load vortexbox software and
its up running. Very simple and runs great. The only problem is its not
cheap. The Sheevaplug is a lot cheaper, but not quite as powerful.

Yet... being able to stream audio to other areas is one of the real
advantages of the network audio setup. With multiple squeezeboxes you
will be able to get to your music in different locations. You can
listen to different things, or synchronize and play the same stream in
multiple areas. If you look at most of the regular poster's signature
lines, you will see multiple squeezeboxes listed. Some have more
squeezeboxes than rooms in their houses! I actually only have 4 (a
SB3/Classic, a Boom, a Radio and a Duet) plus I run squeezeslave on my
PC (which I'm listening to right now). These things tend to multiply,
so be warned!

A reboot by the rear switch doesn't clear network and wireless

Out the box, no.

As said, you can use the CustomBrowse plugin to create menus which are
genre specific. An example, listing all albums which are tagged as
being a classical genres. This is actually a 'deep' menu, so you get an
A-Z list, then drill in to the album titles.

2010-11-12 Thread gmudunuri

You won't be able to play the music right away. You need to start the
Touch's internal Squeezebox Server (SBS), which I think is what you are
referring to as option 1. This starts the SBS which first needs to scan
audio files on your USB drive to build the music library. Depending on
the number of audio files, this might take a while. Once the scan is
complete, you should be able to find your music under "My Music" in the
main menu. If you were connected to a different library (e.g., served by
an SBS on your PC) prior to attaching the USB stick, you may need to
first switch to the USB sticks library (not sure if this step is
required). This can be done by choosing the appropriate library under
"My Music" > "Switch Library".

First, do you realize that the VBA is "another computer"? It happens to
be less power hungry than a lot of computers, but it's a computer
nontheless.

The SB connects to the VBA through your router. If they are all in the
same cabinet then it's best to use ethernet (wired) connections for
router<-->VBA and router<-->SB.

The VBA has no display of its own. It has a VGA video output. I'm not
sure of the specs on the video card, but I assume it is pretty basic.
That is partly how they keep the power consumption down. My server uses
the same basic hardware as a VBA, and when I need to attach a monitor my
19" LCD TV works fine with the VGA connection. But if your plasma is
very big or you're looking for HD video, then VBA's video probably
cannot deliver.

Also, if your Touch is in a cabinet, how do you plan to control it?
There are good options that don't require physical access to the Touch
(eg, iPhone, iPod Touch, Android phones, SB Controller, another pc).
But just wanted to make sure you had thought of that.

Correct - use of an outboard DAC is optional. Depending on the model of

Your choice. You can use the Squeezebox's analog outputs to connect to
the Aux ports on your receiver. Or you can use the Squeezebox's digital
outputs to connect to an external DAC, or a receiver/amp with digital
inputs.

And you can actually do both at the same time, which can be useful for
multi-room setups that only need a single source.

to the VBA via USB or will I have to stream? What type of display does
the VBA have? Can I output the display to my plasma?

And I can connect directly to the AUX ports in my receiver with the
Squeezebox? I don't need to connect to a DAC?

2010-11-12 Thread Ocean56

This is what I want to do when I get a Squeezebox...

1. Use an old PC to run the Squeezebox server.
2. Buy a large external HD to rip CDs to.
3. Also be able to stream Internet radio stations (I have wireless).
4. Play all of the above through my receiver.

Can I do that?

"No"

But you have "genres" My Music "Genres"

That is if you used the genre tag when tagging the files .

Or use some of Erlands plugins like custom browse for example

Re: [SlimDevices: Touch] How to reboot Touch?

2010-11-12 Thread Waldo Pepper

The difference is that a power off clears its basic memory and starts
again looking for files that already exist using network settings that
already exist.

The cold boot by use of the rear switch clears everthing and things
like your network/wireless settings have to be put in again.

I find this somewhat tiresome but a good start following a software
update.

[SlimDevices: Touch] Seperate menu for classical music etc...

2010-11-12 Thread Howlindawg

I'm not sure whether it's best to post this in the Touch section or the
ripping section but here goes...

Rather than having my entire Library accessed via My Music > Artists I
would like to be able to seperate all of my music for particular genres
into a seperate menu option.

eg:
My Classical > Artists contains all my Classical and Opera.
My Jazz > Artists contains all my Jazz
My Music > Artists contains everything except the categories catered
for above.

Is this possible with the Touch?

I'm no techie but I can assure you, once you get the hang of the
Squeezebox, you will happily say good bye CDs, vinyls and ithings.

I think you're on to something there. Of all the people who come to me
for advice on "those computer thingies", it's my mom who is the least
knowledgeable and also the easiest to help. If I tell her backups are
important, I can rest assured she dutifylly makes frequent backups of
the company accounting data. If I install a program to handle a
specific task I know I won't find it replaced by some bastardized
"build of the day" abomination because someone on the internet told her
it was the coolest thing. Only problem is supporting over the phone,
understanding her terminology when describing what is the problem takes
quite a bit of imagination.

Re: [SlimDevices: Touch] Setting presets on the Touch?

morthan;587573 Wrote:

Hi,

I can confirm, presets on the remote do not work with the Touch, 7.5.1.
However, I found this comment in another topic:

http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?p=531854#post531854

I have modified the ShortcutsMeta.lua file accordingly, and miracle
happened, now I have all buttons 1-9 on the remote working nicely:
station is set on press and hold, and switch to the station on press.
If you are comfortable with fiddling with lua files, I recommend to
follow suit.

Two questions, if someone could kindly help:

1. The zero (0) still does not seem to work, even if I set it the same
way as buttons 1-9 in ShortcutsMeta.lua - any special reason?

2. I would like to assign one remote button to start one of the
applets, the weather application from extras. How could I do it..? What
function would I need to add to the lua file?

Thanks,
bandi
