Hi Toby,
Thanks for your interest. Yes, I went into Network Settings last night
and disabled the wireless connection so the Vaio PC is now only
ethernet connected. This seemed to help but it took the Touch ages and
several attempts to connect to My Music. Once connected the set up
played music perfectly for a few hours EXCEPT that I noticed later that
the 'Now Playing' screen had gone blank - no scrolling and no track
information. Shutting down the Touch and restarting it then resulted in
the first track information scrolling for a second or so and then back
to no information.
And 'Yes' I am getting the 'Cannot connect to My Squeezebox.com'
message.
I love the SQ but I wish the darned thing wasn't so flakey.
Cheers,
Dave.

of that, use -D plughw:1,0 instead of hw:1,0.

If that works (it should) then we can try different formats from aplay
using the hw:1,0 instead of the plug.

To try different formats do this:

 aplay -D hw:1,0 -f S24_LE -c2 -r44100 name.wav

There are several different formats to try:

 S24_LE
 S24_3LE
 S32_LE

Hopefully one of these will work.

Sorry, missed the plughw bit.
Will try straight away.

Why? Who knows. There are so many variables it can be difficult to

But I'd bet your less than conventional network setup is at least

Agree with toby10's points above. But I recall that you can use the
TOUCH wired with ethernet in your setup. How are you connecting the
TOUCH. And keep in mind that if you set the TOUCH up with WIFI, just
plugging in the ethernet cable is NOT enough to switch it to ethernet.

Also, you do need the mysqueezebox.com credentials entered into your
SbS settings, but with your server on 24/7, you NEVER need to switch
from your own SqueezeBoxServer to mysqueezebox.com. Everything you can
do with mysb.com can be done from your own SbS (including internet
radio, etc.).

And to confirm, these things are not typically flaky. My stuff is all
rock solid and can play for hours and hours, week after week without me
doing anything other than hitting play.

[SlimDevices: Touch] Power on time with USB drive

Can anyone confirm how long the touch takes to power up (from off) when

Every time the touch boots up from power off/reboot, it goes through a
Discovering files routine. Why it needs to do this I don't know, it
is one thing that completely ruins the user experience of the Touch.
I've just timed a reboot (short press of button on the rear)

1 TB Western Digital powered HD

All artwork embedded.

I'm curious, are those the only files you have on the disk, or are
there others? Because one of the annoying things about TinySBS is that
you can't specify a particular music folder, so it searches the entire
drive, which is a double whammy for people who have other data on the
drive.

The drive was new two weeks ago, nothing on it but a hidden folder
named autorun, only thing in there was a Western Digital ICO file. I
synced my Music folder onto it using Allway Sync, which adds a couple
of files, that's it.

No, all my players are powered up 24/7. Running 7.6 beta gets frequent
firmware updates for the Touch/Controller, which requires restarts.
Plus if using TinySB as server for the Touch as a player, odd crashes,
cause reboots, it all adds up to a frustrating experience.

I will say though that using TinySB as a server for my Boom and Radio
is rock solid, will play all day (usually random tracks) no problem.

I posted these problems a few months ago.

I have this problem with mine and believe it is related to my backup
software. When that backup software (CrashPlan) scans my PC to see if
something needs backing up, my Touch keeps playing but looses the
display data. I ussually get it corre ted by stopping the Touch, then
stopping and restarting the server software on my PC. Like you,
cometimes I have to restart the Touch by hitting the reset button or
just unplugging it.

Also, to prevent this from happening, I sometimes will pause (or put to
sleep) my backup software for a while before listening to my Touch.

Yes - it's a network music player - and, rather like your router, is
designed to be left on so that it is always connected to the network
and ready to use. That's why there is no power switch...

+1. My SB3 is nearly 5 years old, it's never been switched off, it sits
there telling me the time and date when not being used as a player. Any

Re: [SlimDevices: Touch] Can a Squeezebox Touch access a NAS?

2011-02-23 Thread aubuti

Vortexbox is not simply server software -- it is a complete operating
system, based on Fedora Linux. So installing Vortexbox means
_replacing_ the Linux operating system on your NAS. As NAS OSs are
usually very customized distros for that particular hardware, I would
be surprised if you could put Vortexbox on it. Does the NAS even have
an x86 CPU?

As an alternative, why not run SBS on your PC but use the NAS as the
library, instead of having a separate copy on your PC? If you are
running the regular SBS there is nothing that says the library has to
be on the same machine.

Re: [SlimDevices: Touch] Can a Squeezebox Touch access a NAS?

Vortexbox is not simply server software -- it is a complete operating
system, based on Fedora Linux. So installing Vortexbox means
_replacing_ the Linux operating system on your NAS. As NAS OSs are
usually very customized distros for that particular hardware, I would
be surprised if you could put Vortexbox on it. Does the NAS even have
 an x86 CPU?

As an alternative, why not run SBS on your PC but use the NAS as the
library, instead of having a separate copy on your PC? If you are
running the regular SBS there is nothing that says the library has to
 be on the same machine.
Hi aubuti :

Good Point, are you saying that I share that NAS Folder from the PC
that is running the SBS and My Touch should see the NAS library so I do
not need to maintain another copy of the Music library on the PC? I will
try this when I get home tomorrow, Thank You so much, This forum is
awesome!!

messing things up. Clever piece of software and great to tidy up files.

Right. Basically you access the NAS folder from the PC that is running
SBS. Then in SBS Settings Basic settings specify the NAS folder as
your music library.

If you are running Windows on your pc there are two ways you could
specify the NAS folder. One is by assigning a drive letter (using
Windows Explorer). The other is by using the UNC address, which takes
the form \\servername\foldername. I don't run SBS on Windows so I am not
sure which is the preferred approach, but if one doesn't work, try the
other. Or there are plenty others around here who know the answer.

Sorry to hear you keep having this problem. So far, I have not had a
recurrence, but when it happened earlier on, restarting SBS didn't
solve the problem either. It seems odd that removing power and plugging
back in would do it.

Interesting. I can try moving my software to another computer, but I'm
not running any backup software. I'll also try to bounce the service
the next time it happens and post back here.

If it's a server-side issue, I wonder if I'll see the same problem when
I sync my Boom up? In any case, I'm switching from a Windows desktop to
a Linux desktop. We'll see if it's client-side or server-side then.

Thanks!

[SlimDevices: Touch] FLAC Settings on the SB Touch?

2011-02-23 Thread souwalker

Quote
the settings could be all out of whack, at the time i found a setup
guide and turns out mine was sending flac but pretty much playing it in
back into mp3, a couple of boxes to uncheck and check and the sound
changed drmatically..
Unquote

I don't have this issue but are there settings in the SB Touch to
confirm playback is FLAC instead of mp3? I am curious.

Re: [SlimDevices: Touch] Further Dim Display on 'When Off' Screensaver

2011-02-23 Thread JohnSwenson

There is an automatic brightness mode that senses the light level in the
room and dims the display when it gets dark. You can adjust the minimum
brightness level (the brightness it goes down to when the room is
completely dark). If you want the clock to be very dim during the
night, set the mode to automatic and the minimum brightness to very
low.

[SlimDevices: Touch] Alarm does not work properly

2011-02-23 Thread auster

Yesterday I tested squeezebox touch alarm and it worked nicely. I
configurated it woke me up this morning but nothing happened. It should
have alarmed two hours ago, but it didn't work. I can still see the bell
icon on the screen though. I have checked that alarm time was (is)
correct.

Background:
I have squeezebox touch. My music library is on vortexbox. I mostly use
them with iPeng on iPad.

Like I said, yesterday I tested alarm. I set up it 15-20 mins ahead, I
shutdown vortexbox and squeezebox touch. About 5 minutes before alarm
time vortexbox started up and then right on alarm time squeezebox
started to play music from my currect playlist. I repeated this few
times and it worked without problems.

Then I set up alarm for waking me up in the morning (about 8 hours
ahead), shut down VB and sb. And like I said, nothing happened.

Any ideas?

Re: [SlimDevices: Touch] FLAC Settings on the SB Touch?

2011-02-23 Thread Phil Leigh

There are 2 settings in SBS that affect how flac files are played. The
default settings are correct. The 2 settings are:

1) Player - Audio - Bitrate Limiting... this should be set to NO
2) Advanced - Filetypes - Fileformat:FLAC, Stream Format: MP3,
Decoder:disabled
