Especially the acoustic noise ,for example putting a NAS in the hifi rack . Many of them are not silent at all and certainly not most desktops or even laptops . That was what sold me the squeezebox paradigm in 2006 , but the gap is getting smaller if you nowadays can control a PC player from an app thus not be tethered to using the PC as an interface . Next issues would be sync with multiple devices if possible . Re: [SlimDevices: Touch] Do I need a Squeezebox Touch if I instead purchased a Synology NAS complete with LMS
I've been thinking (dangerous I know) - the Squeezebox Touch was only really necessary for me to stream wirelessly from my PC upstairs to the hifi downstairs, at the same time looking a whole lot better than putting a computer or even a laptop alongside the neatly arranged separates system in the main living room. The PC upstairs was going to be the music servers streaming down to the SBT, which in turn would connect to my external DAC. Instead of locking myself into the SBT technology or even the Synology software, I would like the complete freedom of using players and streaming technology from the far more versatile Windows PC (JRiver, Spotify, Foobar and so it goes on). There are various DACs that allow for this, such as the Arcam rDAC with wireless, however I have already invested in a DAC, and it's not wireless. So I figured that I will devise a way to effectively extend the USB link from the PC to the DAC by way of a wireless USB 2.0 extender such as this http://www.gefen.com/kvm/dproduct.jsp?prod_id=4505. This particular example is expensive, so I have found other similar ideas which will hopefully achieve the same thing. Seems like a very neat and easy solution if it works like it should do, thus effectively turning my existing DAC into a wireless DAC. Remote control would be via a smart phone or tablet to the PC upstairs... I will put that plan into action!! I like it... and I like the way it isolates me from the electrically noisy PC environment at the same time as giving me the versatility of a PC.. Watch this space... stop-spinning's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=43254 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=96308 ___ Touch mailing list Touch@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/touch

I forgot that one. In case of Classic, the LMS IP was entered in the Classic menu, somewhere in the settings, so I didn't use the Auto Discovery. For the Touch, I forgot this one, and then it wanted to use the Auto Discovery. But if we add the remote library manually, then I guess the Auto Discovery is not needed, hence in that case opening the UDP 3483 and 17784 would not be needed. batka's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=12908 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=96295 ___ Touch mailing list Touch@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/touch
Re: [SlimDevices: Touch] New SB Touch won't connect to LMS
3483 udp should be enough to make it work for the autodiscovery , note that it is UDP not TCP so open it for TCP won't help . There is a cheat (I to had mystery firewall problems for a long time, before i fixed it , for some reason the ports did not open for udp broadcasts ) You can use the Touch's " add remote server" function but instead of adding a remote server ,you punch in the current ip of the local server machine . This works temprarilry if the server is on DCHP and change ip now and then or forever if it always have the same ip. settings>advanced>networking>remote libraries Mnyb's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=4143 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=96295 ___ Touch mailing list Touch@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/touch

Just to rule out whether it is caused by firewall, are you double sure that's it's not firewall blocking? To test it, turn off both the incoming AND outgoing firewall AT ONCE on the PC where the LMS running. If it's firewall blocking issue then Touch should find the LMS after some seconds, supposed if the IP network is correctly configured. I actually had just a (maybe similar) problem. In my case it was firewall blocking. The Touch sends broadcast packets on UDP 3483 and UDP 17784 to LMS server. That was not allowed in my case, and it blocked Touch to find LMS. It was not issue on with SB Classic. On other hand my IP setting are a bit similar to you. Mine are fully manual although. My IP settings: Touch: IP: 192.168.0.40 Mask: 255.255.255.0 The LMS is running on: IP: 192.168.0.80 Mask: 255.255.255.0 Both is behind a router, which of course has 192.168.0.1 in inside of LAN. Then both in Touch, and on LMS host server, 192.168.0.1 should be specified as Default Gateway, and also as DNS server. At the server running LMS, at firewall (this is an OpenSUSE, firewall configured by Yast) it's enabled the following: Enabling the mentioned UDP broadcasts: Yast -> Firewall -> Broadcast -> Broadcast Configuration -> External Zone -> "3483 17784" Then I have enabled everything from the 192.168.0.0/24 network: Yast -> Firewall -> Custom Rules -> For External Zone: -> Source Network: 192.168.0.0/24, Protocol: TCP, Destination port any, source port any. Re: [SlimDevices: Touch] Setting up a Touch without connecting to mysb.com
Yesterday I got a new Touch in and tried a number of things to try and get it setup without connecting to mysb.com. No luck. The intial screen that tries to connect to mysb.com cannot be over-ridden with the "swipe". I tried putting the firmware on a USB stick, that made no difference. I tried connecting to a DHCP server but no internet connection, no difference. I'm leaving this one in a pristine state for now so I can use it to test options. >From looking at the boot code on my other Touch there is a variable that gets set once the initial setup is complete, which bypasses that code from therafter. So it looks like all we have to do is write a script (with the correct name) that sets this variable, put it and the new firmware on the USB stick and boot from that. The boot code that reads the script looks like it happens significantly earlier than the variable test so theoretically it should work. I'll have to spend some more time looking into this and work out the details of the script. John S. garym and pall freeman, I won't disagree with you, you are probably both correct. But I don't see the relevance to my problem. As noted, if I reset to factory default and start again, I have no problem connecting to ethernet, and (under ethernet info) I get the address and subnet mask expected (and the Touch connects to mysb), so the issue does not seem to be there. I tried starting from factory settings with the router disconnected from the phone line. After "connected to ethernet" I got "connecting to DelphiMac" (that's the name of my computer, and then a message that it could not connect. Made me wonder if communication from that MAC address to my computer was blocked. But I certainly did not block it, and it can't have been blocked originally, since I got a connection at first. While LMS uses very basic tags, as outlined by Osamede in the previous post, the kinds of detailed metadata you are interested in are pretty much not available in any online database so will have to enter all that data by hand. With a reserved address in router, the SB player is still using the DHCP function of the router (albeit getting the exact same IP address each time). With a true static IP (along with assigned subnet, gateway, dns) the DHCP function of the router is not being used at all. In fact, even if DHCP turned OFF in the router, the SB player will still get an IP address, connect to internet, etc. (This said, I also realize that most people do NOT use fixed IP addresses and have NO problems) garym's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=17325 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=96295 ___ Touch mailing list Touch@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/touch

Re: [SlimDevices: Touch] New SB Touch won't connect to LMS
misstl, I believe you are technically correct about static addresses. But my router (I think this is not uncommon) allows me to reserve a specific address for a specific device, which has the same effect as setting the address in the device itself. I will call Logitech at some point, but people here are often more helpful than official channels. It could be a failure in the device, but I suspect something silly that I have done or omitted. Mnyb, actually it seems that showing the address as the address assigned by my ISP is correct. I tried my working Squeezebox Classic, set it to my squeezebox.com instead of the local server and it came up with the same address. I guess it reads the address from a server (local or at mysb) and I was expecting it to read it directly. There's no separate modem involved, here in England most devices are combined moem/routers. I have tried restarting the router with no success, but I think I need to try disconnecting it from the phone line, and then resetting the SB to factory. danco's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=210 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=96295 ___ Touch mailing list Touch@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/touch

Dumb question, but you indicated the Touch has a static address, but I'm not sure what you mean by "in the router". Static addresses are set in the device in question. What happens when you set the static address in the Touch itself? Does it not stick? Also keep in mind that electronics, when they fail, often do so very quickly after first installation. They have just enough oomph to make it past the factory quality control check, but then fail very quickly after the customer begins using their device. This isn't real common, but does happen. Don't forget to call Logitech support. They often have good info if you can get to the right person. mlsstl's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=9598 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=96295 ___ Touch mailing list Touch@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/touch

The interface with iPeng and all the available plugins are what make Squeezebox a great experience. If you just want a simple audio player that can play through your DAC, then LMS is probably not for you. hvb83's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=39615 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=96308 ___ Touch mailing list Touch@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/touch

Re: [SlimDevices: Touch] Do I need a Squeezebox Touch if I instead purchased a Synology NAS complete with LMS
Actually it looks like you can plug a USB DAC directly into their DiskStation when using Audio Station as a media player using their USB DAC as an example seen from this link: http://www.synology.com/products/synology_remote.php?lang=uk. Hopefully being Linux it will work with my USB DAC instead... stop-spinning's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=43254 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=96308 ___ Touch mailing list Touch@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/touch
Re: [SlimDevices: Touch] Do I need a Squeezebox Touch if I instead purchased a Synology NAS complete with LMS
Sorry, of course, LMS is the server part only. However 'Audio Station' is built into the NAS - would that be a good alternative music streaming application so that I could still plug the DAC directly into the USB port of the Synology NAS? stop-spinning's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=43254 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=96308 ___ Touch mailing list Touch@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/touch

Squeezeslave can support USB DACs on some platforms but before you should check with Ralphy whether it will support non 44.1kHz rates as otherwise resampling would have to be done on LMS which if on a NAS may not be powerful enough. bpa's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=1806 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=96308 ___ Touch mailing list Touch@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/touch
Re: [SlimDevices: Touch] New SB Touch won't connect to LMS
Actually, you turn out to be in the right area. My router tells me that the device is currently connected and IP address is 192.168.0.11, and the Touch connects fine to my squeezebox.com. But in the SB info option of Settings, Advanced, it claims an IP address of 2.96... And that seems to be an address of my ISP, so the Touch is not showing a local address. Factory reset does not help. danco's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=210 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=96295 ___ Touch mailing list Touch@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/touch

LMS is not a player, it's a server. You need something like Squeezeslave and a soundcard if you don't want a SB Touch. bernt's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=1342 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=96308 ___ Touch mailing list Touch@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/touch
[SlimDevices: Touch] Do I need a Squeezebox Touch if I instead purchased a Synology NAS complete with LMS
Is there any need for me a invest in a SBT when instead I could invest in a Synology NAS which has Logitech Media Server built in. I have a USB DAC, all I would need to do is directly connect my USB DAC to the Synology NAS and remotely control my music library with a smart phone. Am I right in thinking this? stop-spinning's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=43254 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=96308 ___ Touch mailing list Touch@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/touch
Re: [SlimDevices: Touch] Is it possible to avoid Full scan each time I turn off my USB hard disk ?
Hi teddonald, I'm also a rookie but what I think they are triyng to say is that if you stop running the LMS (the inner LMS in your squeezebox touch) before ejecting the usb hdd, the libary will be maintained and the SB will only scan new added files in the hdd the next time you connect it back again. The scanning will be therefore much faster because you aren't rescanning the whole library again but only the added new files. If, on the other hand, you eject the usb hdd device without stopping the LMS first, your library will be lost and the hdd will have to be completely rescanded when reconnected to the Touch. Please don't mistake "stop running the LMS" with "uninstall the LMS". I don't even know if it's possible to uninstall the SB inner LMS, but if it is, once you do so, for sure you won't be able to use the SB as a standalone, i.e. you would have to use a pc or a NAS to operate the SB Touch. Please correct correct me if I'm wrong. Hope this will help. xicoxicao00's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=57036 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=96148 ___ Touch mailing list Touch@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/touch

Then, after stopping and restarting LMS and also, as I found out later, a bad connection of my computer to the internet, it failed to work at all. My main ethernet cable (computer to powerline plug) is slightly faulty and I am going to replace it. danco's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=210 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=96295 ___ Touch mailing list Touch@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/touch
