Re: [SlimDevices: Touch] Touch and DSF files

OK Some updates.

Finally found out why the files played with no sound. I had Pure Music
installed with some proxy files left over. The player was mistakenly
playing the blank proxy files.

But now I have a different problem. A scan of the DSD file folder came
up with nothing. But When I browse the folder I could play file files.
But both the NOW PLAYING area of the browser and the Touch display
nothing while the music is still playing.

Is this a known problem? Any way to have the both the server and
Squeezebox recognize the files and their metadata?

I have both DSF and DFF formats. Most files are DSF with proper

I dug my beloved TOUCH out and installed LMS 7.9 on my MacMini and
re-flashed the TOUCH to the latest firmware.

Activated the DSD PLAYER plugins and made sure fixed volume no crossfade
, checked DSD over PCM, etc

The Touch seems to play the DSD files fine but no sound. I checked the
bit rate of my DSD enables Devialet and the display shows 176.4 KHz but
no sound.

Playing PCM files is fine.

Did I miss something? The Devialet plays DSD files fine from MacMini
and Audirvana.

Any ideas of what to try?

[SlimDevices: Touch] Touch and DSF files

2015-07-28 Thread agentsmith

Havent used my touch for a while so forgive me if i am out of touch.
Any chance that touch can be tweaked to play dsf or dff files directly?

I realize that dsf files can be conveted into flac files encapsulated
with dop headers. Bit it would be good if touch can.learn how to play
dsd files directly. As far as i know dsd file format is quite simple
to play.

Re: [SlimDevices: Touch] Touch and DSF files

2015-07-28 Thread agentsmith

Sorry I was not being clear.

Yes I meant sending the stream from SB Touch to a DoP capable DAC.

DSD (dsf) can be converted to pcm and played on a PCM-only
player/DAC, or it can be repackaged (not converted - the contents of the
bits stay the same) into DoP and played on a DSD-capable DAC.

Actually there is a way to convert DSF files into pseudo FLAC files to
fool the Squeezebox player into thinking it is playing a FLAC file.
When all that file is is a DSF file encapsulated with DoP header and a
FLAC wrapper. if that makes sense at all.

In fact, I was successful in converting a whole bunch of files using
this method and successfully played DSF files natively using
Squeezeboox. Below link explains how it is doe:

http://www.audiocircle.com/index.php?topic=119364.0

I think I posted my experience and some instructions here before but I
cannot find the thread.

Anyway, what I am wondering is if there is a way to do away with this
extra step and have Squeezebox player play DSF files directly
encapsulate and send the stream over the USB out in real time to a DSD
capable DAC. Apparently, that has not been done?

2014-08-04 Thread agentsmith

Having problems with Touch playing hires (24/48, 88,2, 176.4, 92, 192)

Symptom:

* Touch refuses to play any of the hires files in ALAC, FLAC or AIFF
formats, when try to play the Touch blacks out and reboots itself.
* From the browser screen, it seems to play in loop for 3-4 seconds but
nothing from the Touch
* Redbook files play fine with no issues.

Configuration:

Wed Mar 14 06:37:22 MDT 2012
Touch - Firmware: 7.7.2-r9663

USB D to D converter: Audiophilleo AP1 with PurePower

I have tried:

* tweaking the file type options with same results.
* Resetting the Touch and reinstall firmware and EDO

Any ideas on what I should try?

After I have done that I can peruse the menu but there is no option with
 a choice of kernel updates.

If I then go back in to chose the digital output, If I choose USB, it
reboots but then goes into an infinite rebooting loop. I have to hold
down the button on the back to do a reset.

Apologies for the late response. I was trying to double check the
configuration and do more testing before responding.

I had similar experience as canyelles. I can confirm that EDO is
installed. But once I select the USB device from settings and reboot
the Touch, the system hangs for a few minutes and goes into an infinite
loop of rebooting and I had to press the reset button at the back of the
box to resuscitate it.

And same as canyelles, after reinstalling EDO I tried and failed to find
the option to select kernels as shown by the previous poster.

Not really obsessed, but perhaps because it is there? One of the draw
of Async USB, FWIW, is the ability to slave to the DAC's clock, and I
assume the main reason/assumption for EDO is that the clock of the SBT
*may* by chance be worse than a high end DAC.

But yes I am obsessed with the Squeezebox platform. The Devialet
already allow steaming from computer to DAC directly via Ethernet, and
USB in from my Mac Mini. SBT via USB should not really be needed. But
I have been with the Squeeze platform for a decade now and old habits
die hard.

Anyway, if there are Devialet users out there, feel free to chime in to
discuss anything about it.

I changed from dCS/Vitus to this one box solution for the convenience,
without expecting it to out perform the previous setup. And I was
wrong. Long story but it is by far the best sounding piece of audio
equipment I have had the privilege of listening to.

Symptoms include loud static, playing extra S-L-O-W or no sound at all.

Configuration:

Operating system: Mac OS X 10.7.5 - EN - utf8

In ay case I could load up a Firewire or USB drive with gobs of files

selected music folder also disable the upnp/dlna plugin ?
Use the high memory setting in performance .

Hi the files are stored in a QNAP NAS, LAN is Gigabit.

I did untick pictures and videos

I will have a look at the other settings when I get home.

Interesting, I have heard of Vortexbox but never dug deeper.

- Is Vortexbox a software only solution? I see a lot of Vortexox based
hardware boxes.

- If I just want to use a dedicated PC with gobs of storage just to
serve as a LMS or may be as a file server for my MacMini/Pure Music
player, could I just download VortexBox and be in business within
minutes?

- Is Vortexbox free? Do I have to buy anything else?

- After the Vortexbox software is installed, can the PC be left running
headless and be accessed 100% from a web client?

- Can a Unix/Linux dummy like me live happily with Vortexbox? Will I
get stuck at some point if I am not a Linux person?

Sorry about all the questions.

One more question on Vortexbox if I may.

Someone mentioned that my slowness is due to slow NAS. If I my
Vortexbox has no internal storage and access the same NAS through the
LAN, would I still experience the dramatic speed improvement?

Re: [SlimDevices: Touch] Announce: Enhanced Digital Output app - USB Dac and 192k Digital Ouput

2012-12-04 Thread agentsmith

Firstly I just rejoined squeeze brigade after a 2 years hiatus by buying
back a last of breed brand new Touch. First thing I did is tried out
this fantastic upgrade and it worked the first time, amazing!

I do have one question about sharing my dCS USB input between the Touch
and a Mac Mini. Is there a sort of switch that can switch between the 2
devices without too much compromise to the sound!

I plan to use the mini for DSD playback and the Touch for the rest

Thx

Just wondering if you have considered sealed enclosure and use thick

[SlimDevices: Touch] Touch and ALAC bit perfect

2010-06-21 Thread agentsmith

After many attempts I have given up on trying to get my Touch to play
ALAC with Squeezebox Server on QNAP TS-219P.

It works fine with SS on my MacMini, I will settle SS on the Mac even
though it means keeping 2 machines on wth the MacMini on mapped to the
QNAP NAS drive for music data. But at least it works.

What I would really appreciate is if someone could list out the file
format settings to ensure that ALAC is played optimally and not
mysteriously transcoded to MP3 or something like that. I am sorry but
all that faad or what naught is just Greek to me.

Thanks

From my uneducated experience, I would suggest the following:

1. From the Touch, reset to factory default
2. Turn of your server
3. From the Touch, go through the initial setup and connect to Squeeze
Network and update the firmware there.
4. Uninstall everything in the server side
5. Reinstall using the current version 7.5 listed in the Logitech
Squeezebox web site

That worked fine for me. At least for last night.

1. Factory reset the Touch (Risky, since the first Touch I received

2. Uninstall Squeezebox Server in Mac OS (How do I uninstall in Mac?)

3. Reinstall Squeezebox Server 7.5.0

4. Turn on Touch connect to server and update firmware

For (4.) Alternatively, as I recall the first time I flashed the

and flash my firmware there.

Suggestions, advises appreciated.

Re: [SlimDevices: Touch] Adjusting text size

2010-05-04 Thread agentsmith

I have near 20/20 eye sight so I can assure you that 12' away is not
readable for most people. Logi-techs screwed up big time in the
usability department.

The cleverest bit of the original Squeezebox is the huge green one
liner despite the small screen. It made the box a joy to use.

By the way if you look at the nice Touch screen it is very similar size
to a PDA. I am quite sure that Logitech is using its purchasing power
and leverage parts from other PDA or one of their LCD remotes to make
the $299 pricing. And from the shape of the screen I think it will be
a challenge to display large letters like that of the SB2 and SB3.

I am also surprised that no one else raised that issue. And to imply
that the product is designed to be used with an iPhone or the
Controller is bull. That was never stated in the product requirement.
And it would preclude the requirement of many of the users who would
expect the remote control is to work remote from the coach side of the
living room.

I have an iPhone with iPeng, and even I use the remote control 99% of
the time.

If they did a focus group they asked the wrong groups.

Oh and by the way, despite the extended launch date the product is still
not ready for prime time.

The first Touch I bought was certified bricked refusing to go into

waiting in the warehouse.

The user interface is a nightmare compared to the
Transporter/Squeezebox 2/3

The Linux server code refuses to play 99% of my Apple Lossless music.

The Touch is displaying double byte characters as little blocks

Other than that, the box itself is nice and solid, very cute looking.

Hm

This kind of rules it out as a coach remote controlled device. I have
good eyes but to read artists/albums 12 ft away at that point size is
not realistic.

I thought Logitech is a much more experienced consumer goods company,
haven't they done ergonomics testings? Haven't they tried it from a
living room environment themselves?

That was almost the killer function for the SB2, which could have super
size text on the screen that is clearly displayed and controlled from
across the room.

my access method?

I will try tonight when I get home.

[SlimDevices: Touch] Touch Vs Transporter as a transport

2010-04-26 Thread agentsmith

Now that the wait is over, I would like to solicit opinions from Touch
owners out there who also own a Transporter.

As an ex-Transporter owner who is thinking of re-acquiring one, I am
very interested to know if the Touch managed to sound as good or better
than the Transporter. After all being a few years younger the
processing power and chipsets may have been improved?

Has anyone done a sonic comparison between the Transporter and Touch
analogue out and/or digital out? I would be very interested to hear
your experience.

Outside of my Naim fetish, the Transporter is one of the most treasured
pieces of audio equipment. I just wonder if it could be bettered by the
new candidate.

Thanks for the insights.

Whatever client I decide to acquire is going to be connected to my
newfangled Naim DAC. If there are substantial differences between the
transporter and the Touch I will opt for the X-porter since, along with
the Naim Nait 2, I consider it to be one of the gems in audio that I
have great affection about.
