Re: [SlimDevices: Touch] Touch and DSF files
OK Some updates. Finally found out why the files played with no sound. I had Pure Music installed with some proxy files left over. The player was mistakenly playing the blank proxy files. But now I have a different problem. A scan of the DSD file folder came up with nothing. But When I browse the folder I could play file files. But both the NOW PLAYING area of the browser and the Touch display nothing while the music is still playing. Is this a known problem? Any way to have the both the server and Squeezebox recognize the files and their metadata? Re: [SlimDevices: Touch] Touch and DSF files
Sorry I was not being clear. Yes I meant sending the stream from SB Touch to a DoP capable DAC. DSD (dsf) can be converted to pcm and played on a PCM-only player/DAC, or it can be repackaged (not converted - the contents of the bits stay the same) into DoP and played on a DSD-capable DAC. Actually there is a way to convert DSF files into pseudo FLAC files to fool the Squeezebox player into thinking it is playing a FLAC file. When all that file is is a DSF file encapsulated with DoP header and a FLAC wrapper. if that makes sense at all. In fact, I was successful in converting a whole bunch of files using this method and successfully played DSF files natively using Squeezeboox. Below link explains how it is doe: http://www.audiocircle.com/index.php?topic=119364.0 I think I posted my experience and some instructions here before but I cannot find the thread. Anyway, what I am wondering is if there is a way to do away with this extra step and have Squeezebox player play DSF files directly encapsulate and send the stream over the USB out in real time to a DSD capable DAC. Apparently, that has not been done? When I view from 13 feet (~4m) I find that I can read almost everything except the menus that have two lines per item, like the Album browsing that has album title on the top line and the artist's name on the second line. That is the menu I use most on SBs, so I either keep an SB Controller handy or (shudder) get up off the couch when it's time to choose a new album or track. I also remembered those magnifying screens, and was going to post a pic as a suggestion to those who need binocs. You can load up SBS in the Wii's Opera browser, and control it with the Wii's remotes. I think it's slow and ugly, but it works. Nothing to do with getting old. From my uneducated experience, I would suggest the following: 1. From the Touch, reset to factory default 2. Turn of your server 3. From the Touch, go through the initial setup and connect to Squeeze Network and update the firmware there. 4. Uninstall everything in the server side 5. Reinstall using the current version 7.5 listed in the Logitech Squeezebox web site That worked fine for me. At least for last night. I am not trying to abuse the box as a picture frame, news ticker, TV replacement or wanting it to boil an egg form me. I just use it to listen to my music without stacks of CDs litterung my living room. And this is exactly what the Touch does to my full content. I do not need to be convinced, I know what the Squeezebox is about and what it is good at having owned a SB2, SB3 and transporter. The main thing is its ability to play music and be controlled a large music database across the living room with a standard look remote control. Re: [SlimDevices: Touch] Adjusting text size
I have near 20/20 eye sight so I can assure you that 12' away is not readable for most people. Logi-techs screwed up big time in the usability department. The cleverest bit of the original Squeezebox is the huge green one liner despite the small screen. It made the box a joy to use. By the way if you look at the nice Touch screen it is very similar size to a PDA. I am quite sure that Logitech is using its purchasing power and leverage parts from other PDA or one of their LCD remotes to make the $299 pricing. And from the shape of the screen I think it will be a challenge to display large letters like that of the SB2 and SB3. I am also surprised that no one else raised that issue. And to imply that the product is designed to be used with an iPhone or the Controller is bull. That was never stated in the product requirement. And it would preclude the requirement of many of the users who would expect the remote control is to work remote from the coach side of the living room. I have an iPhone with iPeng, and even I use the remote control 99% of the time. If they did a focus group they asked the wrong groups. -- agentsmith Main System: Source: Macbook Pro/M2Tech HiFace/Naim DAC/Teddy XPS Amplification: Naim 282/200/Hicap+Powerline/NAPSC Speakers: Harbeth Monitor 30 Bedroom System: SB2 or Airport Express + Meridian AD88 Missing my Transporter agentsmith's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=1838 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=78217 ___ Touch mailing list Touch@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/touch
