You can look it up on http://ark.intel.com. Just search the processor name and skip to the Advances technologies section. For instance http://ark.intel.com/products/3/Intel-Pentium-Processor-G3220-3M-Cache-3_00-GHz?wapkw=g3220 tells you that this processor supports Intel® Virtualization Technology (VT-x) and Intel® VT-x with Extended Page Tables (EPT) but not Intel® Virtualization Technology for Directed I/O (VT-d).
[Trisquel-users] long-term sustainability of Trisquel -- what if we lose core developers?
How does the Trisquel project guarantee the long-term sustainability of the project? I've check the developers' mailing list from Oct. 2013 to Nov. 2014 and found out that only 7 users have contributed patches (Ruben has write access to the repo. (Only the creators of subjects on the mailing list counted not replies.) +Legimet 12 +Andrew 'Leny' Lindley 5 +mejiko 2 +Damien Zammit 1 +Michał Masłowski 1 +Massimo Pucci 1 +isleofmax 1 It mean we have only 3 contributors who contributed more than once. What if we lose them? Why does Ruben do everything by himself? Can't anyone help him? In my opinion, what this project lacks is 'collaboration of developers'. This project does not have a public system for inviting newcomers to commit code and time. This project is great but it advances only in a monopolistic manner and strangers are not welcome. Maybe a mentoring program can solve this issue in long term. We need a systematic approach to invite as much users as possible to the party and make them be part of it. My solution: 1. we can create a mailing list, for instance devel-newcomers, where newcomers can ask **stupid questions** about ways they can participate and seek help. 2. Some developers volunteer for working with new developers on devel-newcomers 3. Ruben gradually give more power to long-term and trusted contributors like Legimet, Leny, Jason, etc. 4. feedback, feedback, and feedback. It can glue the new contributors to the project and signal them that their idea are important. and at last, I wish great success for Trisquel.

Re: [Trisquel-users] DuckDuckGo hosted by Amazon!!??
I've been researching this a little bit more. DuckDuckGo is indeed hosted by Amazon. I had no idea. I will not use DDG anymore. I have no respect or trust for anyone doing business with Amazon. I'll use exclusively ixquick from now on. onpon4 - I am pretty aware that privacy is not guaranteed nowadays no matter what search engine you use. Personally I don't trust Tor much. It seems to me very probable that a lot of tor nodes may be controlled by freedom opponents.. ixquick is based in Netherlands which is not a freedom eldorado but it is certainly better than the United Swines of Avarice They don't do business with Amazon, a corporation very well known for its privacy and freedom abuses.

Just when I screwed up with my beta version the official version is released. Thank you so much!
Re: [Trisquel-users] long-term sustainability of Trisquel -- what if we lose core developers?
3. Ruben gradually give more power to long-term and trusted contributors like Legimet, Leny, Jason, etc. As far as i know, this is not wanted. The idea is that trisquel remains rubens project (correct me if i'm wrong though). However, i agree with your criticism.
Re: [Trisquel-users] long-term sustainability of Trisquel -- what if we lose core developers?
Having only a few developers is normal. Among free/libre software projects, most only have a single developer.[1] Also, Trisquel isn't doing everything from scratch like Debian is. It's downstream from Ubuntu, which is downstream from Debian. So it benefits from all the work done by the Debian developers as well as Canonical. There's nothing to worry about. Trisquel is fine. Re: [Trisquel-users] Where do you buy printed books online?
In my personal understanding shopping online has become so secure than in the past and shoppers relies on the online shopping because shopping market is now eCommerce marketing. Most of the customers evaluate products prices by price comparison website where they find different prices for the same books and other products that helps them to know which store is offering best and lowest price for their required product. I suggest you to use Compare Panda website where you can find millions of books with discounted rates from amazon and amazon marketplace.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Lagging graphics after upgrading to Trisquel 7
I've also noticed that the graphics rendering is not only slower, but that the 1920x1080 default resolution that I had for my wide screen monitor is now only displaying a default 1280x1024, with my other options being 1024x768 and 800x600. There seems to be no xorg.conf file written following the upgrade. Any recommendtions on how to fix this?
Re: [Trisquel-users] long-term sustainability of Trisquel -- what if we lose core developers?
Perhaps it should be rephrased what if we lose the developer?:) Should that ever happen I hope the old images and repos will still lie in a repo somewhere.
Re: [Trisquel-users] long-term sustainability of Trisquel -- what if we lose core developers?
There's nothing to worry about. Trisquel is fine. It would benefit from donations and contributions, though, so if you're inclined to do either, go ahead. I live in Iran, and because of the U.S. Sanctions (ITAR, etc.), transfer of money is not possible so I try to contribute code. I tried to write a patch and posted it on developers mailing list, but after four days it's neither been rejected nor accepted to be posted to the mailing list. It made me feel that something's fishy here. I am neither nagging about the Trisquel project nor overlooking the efforts have been put into producing this quality product. I'm saying that lots of businesses should be done by trusted community members. The more we trust the community, the more Ruben would have time to work on more important aspects and produce a better quality Trisquel.

Re: [Trisquel-users] long-term sustainability of Trisquel -- what if we lose core developers?
Have you subscribed to the list before posting the patch? In my experience mails rarely leave moderation queues, while mails from subscribed users are usually accepted without moderation. I believe only Ruben can significantly improve the current development process. The new GitLab instance is a part of work being done to help us collaborate. My current policy is to wait until he announces some changes. We have development mailing list and IRC channel (which used to have development meetings): there are places where you can ask newcomer questions which other contributors can ask. I think the low number of patches results from people expecting to be ignored, focusing on other projects or not being interested in contributing. signature.asc Description: PGP signature

There's also a book sharing service called BookMooch. (bookmooch-dot-com) It was created by John Buckman, who runs the music label Magnatune and I believe is affiliated with the EFF. They trade books they already own, so no Amazon. If you are looking for something obscure you're probably not going to find it, but if you are just browsing it should have something for you.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Trisquel on a iMac?
1) The CD suddendly worked! But it asks for username and password. I tried trisquel, trisquel-mini and root (with no password or repeating the username), and nothing works. Anybody knows what could it be? (and no, I'm not using an AMD graphics card) 2) If the CD fails again, I should try to create again the USB. So, could you recommend me an app? UNetbootin, for example?
Re: [Trisquel-users] Lagging graphics after upgrading to Trisquel 7
Would I have to replace it with something?
Re: [Trisquel-users] Lagging graphics after upgrading to Trisquel 7
I'm not sure (sorry), as far as I know, though, no. That'd mean that your GPU's doing nothing (or not doing everything it is capable of), though (I think). To be honest my post was a wee bit of a guess (hence the question mark). All I can say is that it's best to reinstall the package, then remove it, then reboot. If anything goes wrong (and i.e. X wouldn't start), go to the command prompt and do a 'sudo apt-get install xserver-xorg-video-nouveau' and if the Internet isn't working you wouldn't need the Internet anyway.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Trisquel on a iMac?
Try the username live (and is there a guest session? Perhaps you should try guest as well) Anyway Unetbootin should work. I don't think Apple computers support booting from USB, though (or was that Macbooks?). In which case you need a CD that can boot the USB drive. I'd reccommend you plop (look for it on the net) but I think it's non-free (the licence prohibits selling (or commercial purposes?), I think). Yet at the same time I can't quite find an alternative to it :(

Re: [Trisquel-users] Trisquel on a iMac?
None of both users worked, duh -_- My iMac supports USB booting (only UEFI on Apple's EFI, also BIOS with rEFInd), so in theory, it should just work (as Trisquel 7 also has an UEFI boot manager). However, I couldn't start from my USB, after burning it using dd, as said earlier. So yeah, maybe debootstrap. I have little experience with the Debian installer disk tools, so if that could work... :P
[Trisquel-users] T7 - Synaptic fails to run from menu - socket failure?
Hello folks y buenos dias todos el mundo, new install of Belenos-mini, Synaptic doesn't run from the Menu, it does run from a Terminal prompt, gksu, sudo, pkexec and synaptic-pkexec all authenticate OK. Yesterday on running Synaptic as above, there were messages ...cannot find accessibility socket... and ...cannot open /tmp/Knt#nMdsrQ... but they are not there now... However, when 'Applying Changes' in a Terminal, this message appears on the first line: (synaptic:2708): GLib-CRITICAL **: g_child_watch_add_full: assertion 'pid 0' failed... is this non-critical, there seems to be no effect on instrallation/removal of applications and dependencies? I've removed and installed Synaptic using Apt-get, purged and checked, followed the execution path given in the menu to 'synaptic-pkexec' which runs OK... ...so now I've changed the execution line from 'synaptic-pkexec' to 'gksu synaptic'... the menu now works to run synaptic OK.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Rendering non-English characters?
Trisquel already has those packages. In general it's better to install packages from your own distro.

Using url 192.168.1.1 I can log into the tp link router. Tp link asks me to set a root psswd. Shall I do that, and how many letters can it be? It's a normal GNU/Linux password so any length you like (or at least mine is set to a looong randomly generated password). However as it's via web avoid the URL special characters (%?) just in case there's a bug in the web interface. Next step is to contact my isp provider and make them turn the isp router modem into a modem with a public ip address? When that is done, the tp link router should work by connecting it to the isp modem with public address? No further config? We need to know the technical details of your connection. I've only dealt with somewhere in the midteens of different ADSL routers here in the UK and none of them had a true 'become a modem' mode. So what your ISP means by what they're saying is at present a matter of guesswork. Ask them for the connection parameters/details for your side of the router/modem. Leny
Re: [Trisquel-users] DuckDuckGo hosted by Amazon!!??
DuckDuckGo is hosted in Amazon. There is no need to check the news or similar that to confirm information. You can use the “whois” command on GNU/Linux. There is a public database that make this information available. Both the database and associated protocol is also called “whois”. For instance, you can consult it in http://bgp.he.net/dns/duckduckgo.com and under the pages linked from both A records you will see that this is the autonomous system of Amazon. Do you (generic you) think that this jeopardizes our privacy and contradicts or voids DuckDuckGo privacy policy?.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Trisquel on a iMac?
Oh, and note: If you want to do a debootstrap there's a trisquel-mini metapackage for you to install when you chroot into the installation. Not that I ever install it like that (I always install something like trisquel-baseXorgLxterminalSynapticDesktop ShellNetwork ManagerUpowerDMother apps)

marioxcc - thanks for the whois input. The matter is, as I already posted- I don't respect nor do I trust anybody doing business with Amazon. DDG's privacy policy is pretty good. Thing is - I suspect there is a fair probability, being that the servers belong to Amazon, that the key for the decryption of DDG's SSL is well known to Amazon... Maybe I am wrong here.

[Trisquel-users] Setting dashboard ?
Hi I just installed trisquel7.0 and I discovered this environment. I know the setting gnome3.12 / 3.14, but then I dry a little. In the dashboard, can we move the items? For example, the desktop display, put it on the left? In a new dashboard, how do you move items? By default, they block on the right.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Setting dashboard ?
I notice similar; that is, I cannot add or remove panel applets. I can focus the bottom panel with 'ctrl+alt+tab but when I use 'right-click', 'alt+right-click' 'super+right-click' or 'super+alt+right-click', I cannot reach the menu with options like 'add to panel', 'remove from panel'. I'm trying to add the Weather Report and Timer widgets I had in Trisquel 6 and other distros running the Mate desktop.

Re: [Trisquel-users] Lagging graphics after upgrading to Trisquel 7
I purged nouveau and restarted, and the results are MUCH better. I notice that there are a few flourishes missing, such as my main menu not being semi-transparent, and some animated effects, but I hardly notice them, and everything else is now MUCH more responsive. Since my monitor is hooked up to my Nvidia card, not the internal chip, and my display comes up, I'm assuming that it is doing the work, but I don't know exactly what driver is being used. This is what is listed in System Settings - Details - Graphics: Gallium 0.4 on llvmpipe (LLVM 3.4, 128 bits) I'm a little disappointed that so much visual fluff was combined with a less-effective driver resulting in poor performance. I don't have a weak machine, and Trisquel 6 was so responsive and snappy. Trisquel 7, before removing nouveau, was very sluggish and muddy for the sake of looking pretty.

Re: [Trisquel-users] DuckDuckGo hosted by Amazon!!??
I didn't read up on this, but essentially all web sites you interact with are trusting multiple third parties. This includes co-location facility, likely another middleman (company you actually “host with”), the certificate authorities, etc. Amazon is acting as both the co-location provider and host. It gets more scary though. The way the system works you are actually trusting hundreds of entities to properly verify the sites you access. If even one of them screws up you could find that your not interacting with the true web site that you thought you were-and/or your encrypted information is actually being harvested by a third party. Now think about the thousands of developers your trusting every time you use your computer. I'm not a fan of Amazon for so many reasons. They censor the books they sell (physical books, they've pulled politically undesirable books, refusing to sell them, but technically legal), they violate users rights by pulling content sold, they push digital restrictions on users, and much more. That said I'm not sure that DuckDuckGo's use of Amazon (it sounds like it is though) is risking users privacy. It's possible DuckDuckGo's using Amazon in ways that it doesn't. My understanding is if your going to compete with Google, Bing, and ???, then you need significant infrastructure to make it happen. I doubt DuckDuckGo has the financial resources to build its own data centers and maintain them. They might not be able to afford that, but they may be able to afford to rent a data center from Amazon if Amazon will let them rent it by the hour. Now all of a sudden it becomes cost effective and feasible to compete with Google, Bing, etc. I would fight tooth and nail to avoid Amazon, but I don't know what other options exist. Unfortunately in many cases there are no good solutions.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Web (browser) aka Ephiphany
I added the GNOME PPA (ppa:gnome3-team/gnome3) but it didn't add Ephiphany to my list in Synaptic. When I updated, it installed libcolord-gtk1 and updated gnome-control-center, gnome-control-center-data, gnome-system-monitor, gnome-terminal, gnome-terminal-data, libgnome-control-center1. Just a few core things updated, but no Web (Epiphany). Still, I think it should be added to the standard Trisquel repository.
Re: [Trisquel-users] DuckDuckGo hosted by Amazon!!??
SuperTramp86: I'm glad that I have been helpful. Chris: I don't think that there's a justification for DuckDuckGo use of Amazon. There are probably more than 1000 companies offering hosting. Most of them are not concerned with ethics, but some are. Anyway, from what I read (I just began reading about this recently) Amazon is one of the worst of them in this regard. See my thread where I ask for companies that are, specifically, about the free software philosophy (and if you know of another one please post). When the free software pioneers started to write a free OS there wasn't one to use as development environment, so using proprietary software was acceptable, but we're not talking about the same here. I'm very skeptical of the assertion that the DuckDuckGo staff had to made a choice between hosting in Amazon and not providing such a service at all.

I have the same problem with the latest edition of Trisquel. And how to install firefox? Whenever I try sudo apt-get install firefox it opens up ABrowser.
[Trisquel-users] Why I'm leaving Trisquel
I am fed up with this system. It's not that I lost all my files the first time I installed Trisquel. Because that was my fault. I took a risk and overwrote the wrong partition while I was migrating from Windows. And I panicked and wasted money on useless HP tech support instead of asking for help for free online. It's not that upgrading from 5.5 Brigantia to 6.0 Toutatis resulted in Blender ceasing to function. I didn't need Blender that much anyways. It's not that I don't like GNU/Linux. I love it. I'm glad I made the change. It's not that one day, out of nowhere, my system stopped booting, unlike any responsible OS should ever do. Because I fixed that. And I made everything fine. I could tolerate it. I am leaving Trisquel because I was so gosh-darned excited about the new release—and upgrading to it left my system in a state that was workable, but with a mangled panel and text/colour rendering problems. Then I downloaded the ISO and reinstalled the system entirely, only to find that it wouldn't boot properly due to encryption—to boot, I had to enter an incorrect username and password in GRUB, and then press enter after boot hung, and then enter the password to encryption. And now, on my freshly installed system, I am experiencing the same colour rendering problems as with the upgraded system. I can't take this anymore. I quit. I might be a programming student, but I need my computer to be at somewhat user friendly. I won't say it's been nothing but trouble since day one, since it's actually computed very well. I will say that the problems are too frequent and often difficult to fix. I still care about free software, so I'm taking my business to Debian now. Goodbye.

[Trisquel-users] Free Software in Schools
I noticed something rather delightful today while I was in one of the computer labs at one of the schools I service. There were a number of students playing around with some digital pictures on their desktops. Now, mind you the school district I work for is deeply imbedded in using Microsoft, Google, and Apple products and services. We only run a few servers with GNU/Linux, and they are rapidly being fazed out. Anyways, when I set up the computers in my schools that I have charge of, I install some free software programs such as GIMP or GNU Image Manipulation Program, not really thinking anyone would actually use, but just having it there in case. Well, these students were not only using it, but must have been using it in this school for a while, because they were showing each other techniques on how to do things! Long story short, if free software is available, and not clouded by the hype of proprietary, or the over all jamming down one's throat, students will use it! Nuff Said. grimlok
Re: [Trisquel-users] DuckDuckGo hosted by Amazon!!??
Yea- as I said, it didn't sound like it to me either. However- not having experience with systems of this scale I wouldn't know. I'm not even entirely sure how Amazon's specific services compare to other “cloud” services. I've been under the impression Amazon's service makes scaling things easy. I wasn't sure if these particular features were widespread (particularly at the time of DuckDuckGo's transition to them).
Re: [Trisquel-users] Which software does this forum runs?
Thanks you. What's the reason that the site appears to be hosted on Drupal, based on the generated HTML?. As a small note, I think that it's preferable to call automatically generated HTML as such, rather than source code, since it's not the preferred form to modify the word or even intended to be edited.
Re: [Trisquel-users] Test trisquel 7 64bit on 8gb usb memory stick?
Well technically he doesn't have the rights to those things because they were reserved by the corporation who sold him his computer, which can be a problem. It was done legally so he has no rights to say, the source code of his BIOS or the documentation necessary for making drivers, because they never agreed to give anyone such info; they reserved it to themselves. If we say we have a right to what others, no matter how rich and rude they may be, have legally reserved to themselves, doesn't that amount to stealing? We should do to others what we would have them do to us, regardless of whether they return the favour.

Re: [Trisquel-users] [Abrowser] Unexpected Error, not able to sync
Abrowser is Firefox without the Firefox branding. Firefox's branding restrictions make the vanilla program non-free software, so instead, the developers took Firefox, removed the Firefox branding, made a few other tweaks, and packaged it as Abrowser. If you are using Abrowser, you are essentially using Firefox. It's the same code underneath.

My PERSONAL view on this: 1. I absolutely support free software, not non-free software. 2. Mono is free software. I myself consider Mono is a brave challenger to the related non-free software. 3. In future if Mono could not keep its freedom, I will stop learning or using it.
