Re: [Trisquel-users] Nobody lasts forever

2019-09-18 Thread dave

> What the heck is going on here?

What's going on here is that software does not exist in a vacuum. It is
created by groups of people, it is used by groups of people. We are
political, and software is political due to that.

> WTF?? How does any RMS opinion affect the way a GNU/Linux distro works?

Profoundly... Trisquel takes a stance on which pieces of software should and
should not be included in the distribution. This forum has a code of conduct
asking people not to do certain things, not to use certain terms. These
stances that FSF endorsed distributions take are directly as a result of RMS
opinions. Just like with FSF there is a strong association. This requires
very careful navigation.

I will also be leaving Trisquel at this point. This thread is playing out in
a similar way to the Purism ones, with it being inferred that anyone not in
the majority position on this forum hasn't read the source material etc. If
the goal is to get a fully-free distribution in the hands of as many people
as possible, which requires an inclusive approach to community building, then
these threads will certainly damage that.

Relatively few people here contribute to the development of the distribution,
website, documentation. I have been fairly involved in development of etiona
for a few months, and have found the people I have worked with there to be
considerate, helpful and respectful, even if I disagree with them on
political issues / specific free software positions. It is a shame that the
worthwhile efforts to keep pushing out Trisquel are overshadowed by a
prominent public forum which is often not considerate, helpful, respectful.

Do you know what NVIDIA GPU your system has? If so it might be possible to

Re: [Trisquel-users] Error while trying to update trisquel 7 to trisquel 8 : Could not calculate the upgrade

2019-09-10 Thread dave
I'm afraid I don't have much to add. I haven't ever actually done the upgrade
from 7->8.

The only thing further I might suggest is to say 'Yes' to the flidas entries,
then run `apt-get update` followed by `apt-get dist-upgrade` and see if that
gives some more output.

You would then need to change the `flidas` back to `belenos` in
`/etc/apt/sources.list` if you need to grab any other belenos packages in
future, though.

Re: [Trisquel-users] Recommended Music players?

2019-09-10 Thread dave
Another thumbs up for Audacious. I switched to it from Rhythmbox when I
update to Etiona (rhythmbox is not built successfully there yet). Audacious
is lighter weight, reliable, no complaints. The only thing I could see is
that the interface with tabbed playlists may be a bit cumbersome compared to
rhythmbox if you rely a lot on playlists. I tend to play my whole library on
random, or search for something specific.

Re: [Trisquel-users] Trisquel 9 Ready For Development And Testing

2019-09-08 Thread dave
For anyone trying/testing trisquel 9, Jenkins doesn't seem to be building all
of the working package-helpers, so I have put my local builds of everything
that's working for me here: https://www.randomroad.net/trisquel_deb/

They're not signed, no release file etc. so you likely shouldn't trust them,
but might be useful if you are trying out 9.0 / want to contribute to testing
things.

Re: [Trisquel-users] Error while trying to update trisquel 7 to trisquel 8 : Could not calculate the upgrade

2019-09-07 Thread dave

Hi Lynn,

Take a look in the file `/etc/apt/sources.list`...

If it already says 'flidas' on each line then try running `apt-get update &&
apt-get dist-upgrade` in a terminal to see full error messages.

If it still says `belenos` on each line then try running `do-release-upgrade`
in a terminal to see full error messages.

Re: [Trisquel-users] Questions About Keepassxc, VeraCrypt, ZuluCrypt and Some Others

2019-07-22 Thread dave

Hello,

I'm currently running the in-development Trisquel 9.0 and can confirm that
KeepassXC is there...

keepassxc/etiona 2.3.1+dfsg.1-1 amd64
  Cross Platform Password Manager

An option to get it on an a Trisquel 8.0 system is to install it using Guix
(an alternative GNU packaging system that several people here on the forum
have installed on Trisquel). Guix currently has keepassxc 2.3.4 available.

If you search for 'Guix' on the forum here there is some discussion about
what it is, and how to set it up.

If you are on the stock Trisquel kernel, you might like to try jxself's
packaging of linux-libre: https://jxself.org/linux-libre/

On my desktop machine power-off does not complete reliably with the stock
Trisquel 8.0 kernel, but works with 4.19 or 5.2 linux-libre.

Re: [Trisquel-users] Setting up a server

2019-07-07 Thread dave
Generally, if you search the web for instructions on installing / setting up
things like this on Ubuntu 16.04 you will find a procedure that works on
Trisquel 8.0 - as it is derived from Ubuntu 16.04. So a search for "wordpress
install Ubuntu 16.04" should get you what you need.

One caution though is to be careful reading through any guide that suggests
adding a repository / downloading software, so that you do not inadvertently
add anything non-free if your goal (since you are using Trisquel) is to keep
a free/libre system.

Matthew,

How did you install orca 3.18? I did this from the Ubuntu
accessibility development ppa, and have orca talking. If you add the
ppa and upgrade your system, you will get, not only orca 3.18, but all
its dependencies like python2at-spi, pyatspi, and at-spi2-core.
?There are more, but those are the three that come immediately to
mind. Here's what to do if you can:

sudo add-apt-repository ppa:accessibility-devel
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get upgrade

When this is done, restart. Orca will be at 3.18, and its dependencies
will match.

Can you log into your Trisquel machine using ssh from elsewhere on
your network? that would be the best way to do this, I think. Or, you
might be able to start the live cd, open a terminal, sudo -i, mount
your hard drive as an entry in /mnt, chroot into the mounted system,
and do the commands I mentioned. When done, exit the chroot, unmount
the system, exit the sudo -i, and reboot from your drive again.

Write me off list; perhaps we can get on the phone, or something, and
we can get this fixed.

Happy to help,

Dave Hunt

Glad you like it; there will be more, maybe I'll put them up about a
week apart? I think I'm going to call the next one "All About That
Browser", and cover, in depth, you guessed it. I might have to roll
orca and friends back to their Trisquel Live DVD defaults; there seems
to have been a recent regression that causes hangs at seemingly-random
times, when using orca with gecko navigation.

Cheers,

Dave

In general, I don't purge any application programs that come on the
live dvd, for fear of accidentally removing things that should not be
removed; have broken installations this way. I can go into the Main

I've allocated plenty of disc space for the root filesystem, having a
few extra packages around is not a problem.

[Trisquel-users] I broke Nautilus; how to fix it?

2015-08-16 Thread Dave Hunt
-BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE-
Hash: SHA1

Hi,

In an installation of Trisquel 7, I broke the file manager such that,
when I select a folder, either by highlighting its icon, or selecting
it from the 'places' menu, Totem opens, instead of the folder. What's
more, if I use my keyboard shortcut to my home folder, totem opens,
showing nothing. To get my home folder open, I have to start nautilus
from the 'run' dialogue.

I suppose I can fix this by deleting all the folders with '.' as the
first character in their names, and reboot? Is there something more
selective I can do?

Thanks,

Dave Hunt

Now on twister as @davehunt but not sure how to use it; lol.

I recently acquired such a Toshiba (Satellite something), which has an
in-built Intel wifi card that does not work with free firmware, so I got
the TP USB wifi radio, and it works. Debian Jessie doesn't see the TP,
but that's for another list. lol.

Re: [Trisquel-users] Migrating from OpenSuse to Trisquel

2013-06-22 Thread Dave Hunt

I happened to be using Open Suse when I wrote that page. Unetbootin
wasn't in the repos, as of 12.3; I got the binary from the unetbootin
sourceforge pages. There were a bunch of dependencies that were in the
repos, however. I apologize for any typos in that wiki; the whole thing
needs work and more hands on it.

If you don't need or want persistent space on the usb drive, you can
just use the 'dd' command, within Opensuse's terminal, to write a
bootable Trisquel system to that unit. This command is already in
GNU/Linux distros.

A command like

sudo dd if=~/Downloads/Trisquel_6.0_i386.iso of=/dev/sdb bs=8M;sinc

Will do this (names changed to suit your setup). Remember, you don't
need to type that whole long filename; just enough to uniquely match it,
than hit 'tab'; the command shell will fill in the rest.

Dave

Re: [Trisquel-users] Major changes in the next Trisquel release

2013-06-14 Thread Dave Hunt
The ppas could still be added, though with a bit more manual work; it's
not as easy as, for instance,

sudo add-apt-repository ppa:sparkers

You'd have to go to the launchpad page, locate the 'deb' and 'deb src'
lines for the ppa of interest, add them to '/etc/sources.list', and add
the gpg fingerprint with a command (I forget what that is). I like the
Debian network installer, but have not tried the one from the live
Wheezy cd; don't know how it compares to Ubiquity. I once installed a
distro that used the utility called remastersys-installer, and getting
dumped into gparted when it came time to set up the disk, was a little
intimidating. If not Ubiquity, then something just as easy to use is
nice.

2013-06-10 Thread Dave Hunt
This year was my first Northeast GNU/Linux Fest, where I got to chat
with reps of Think Penguin and many of the distros.

I attend most of the monthly meetings of a local GNU/Linux desktop
users' group. Our outreach could be better. So far, it includes
promotion of the meetings on social media and to other user groups,
though I help staff an information table at a community college
cafeteria. We gave away lots of cds and did lots of meeting/greeting.
For the most part, our effort seemed well received, though there were
some skeptics; some even doubted the legality of our handing out
software, no strings attached. I'm planning to join Jonathan (as in
Sonar GNU/Linux Project), at his presentation to a provider of
disability services.

Re: [Trisquel-users] Major changes in the next Trisquel release

2013-06-09 Thread Dave Hunt

Hi,

I almost always use the windowing environment, though console access
would be nice if it were easy to set up. I would like to see the
Trisquel network install with an accessible console option, like the new
Debian Net Install has. In the Wheezy net installer, the user types a
single 's' at the boot prompt, and the speakup console screen reader
comes up. Furthermore, the resulting installation has both console and
GNOME accessibility. I can't speak to Trisquel's braille support; I
only use speech. I find Trisquel's implementation, based on the GNOME
fallback, to be very easy to use with Orca. I tried GNOME Shell and
found its accessibility lacking. In other distros, GNOME Shell does
work, so I'm not sure what may be missing here; it might just be a
setting not having been enabled.

In my installation, I deviate from some of Trisquel's default
applications. Thunderbird mail and exaile music player are more
accessible with Orca than are evolution and rhythmbox, for instance. As
an added convenience, it would be nice to have qt-at-spi as part of the
default Trisquel windowing environment; this would expand the set of
accessible applications, without effecting performance on systems in
which the accessibility is not used. QT-AT-SPI is in the repos, and
I've installed it for use with the mumble client.

Re: [Trisquel-users] Compiling sources

2013-06-09 Thread Dave Hunt
I always install the package, build-essential, before trying to build
anything. The Trisquel repos may also have build dependencies for your
package; use

sudo apt-get build-dep

and your app's name.

The package may specify a particular version of autoconf or automake;
get those, as well? Finally, some packages require that you use the
'./autogen.sh', to make the config files.

Re: [Trisquel-users] Major changes in the next Trisquel release

2013-06-08 Thread Dave Hunt
if Cinnamon is, as you say a more mature and vital project than is
Consort, maybe making it accessible is as simple as adding the at-spi
stack that already works with GTK3? It could just be that Linux Mint
doesn't include this stack? If, even with the at stack installed, an
instance of Cinnamon isn't accessible out fo the box, it may just be a
matter of getting Cinnamon to generate the system events Orca and
related apps listen for. Thanks for suggesting I contact Jonathan of
the Sonar Project; Enabling Cinnamon seems like something worthy of
their attention. Regarding Mate, getting it accessible may just be a
matter of adding the accessibility stack and applications from the
latest GNOME 2. Mate accessibility has come up on Orca forums. It has
been suggested that enabling Mate is as simple as renaming and
rebuilding a bunch of code. Again, a suggestion for the Sonar Project
folks. So far, they seem preoccupied with keeping up with Ubuntu's
releases.

Re: [Trisquel-users] Major changes in the next Trisquel release

2013-06-08 Thread Dave Hunt
I'm as important a human as anyone with working eyeballs! It follows
that I should have as much control of my computing as someone who
happens to be able to read a screen. Some sort of windowing environment
and the console must be accessible by means of alternate inputs and
outputs.

Re: [Trisquel-users] Major changes in the next Trisquel release

2013-06-07 Thread Dave Hunt
Any system I use must have a working Orca screen reader. The GNOME
Fallback, as hacked by Rubin et al, works very well with Orca (at least
as well as does the un-hacked Fallback); I prefer Trisquel's layout to
Ubuntu's. If customizing Fallback is really the cause of some delays in
getting releases out, then the process may need improving? What is
happening with Consort Desktop? That seems, to me, like it has
possibilities. Unity-2D works with Orca, but Ubuntu supports no further
development there. I haven't tried GNOME Shell in Trisquel, but I have
done in other distros; It is quite usable with Orca. If Cinnamon is in
the Trisquel repos, I can try it; No Joy with Orca in two versions of
Mint I've tried. When last I tried a Trisquel Mate live dvd, Orca
either wasn't there or was non-functional.

Does this answer your questions?

Viewtube and linterna-magica are greasemonkey scripts and are not

linternamagica.nongnu.org; you can install the lantern from there; I
chose the link labeled 'user script-uncompresed', or the like.
