Re: [U2] Attribute Problem

I would guess that the calculation is trying to subtract MATL from F. Could
it be enclosed in quotes or something?

Subject: [U2] Attribute Problem

Hi. I think I have finally gone insane.

I am having a problem with the attribute MATL.AMT. It calculates the
extended amount on hand by taking the frozen material cost times the on hand
amount.

The problem is when I use F_MATL for the frozen material cost, MATL.AMT is
good. When I use F-MATL for the frozen material cost, it returns 0
everytime.

F_MATL and F-MATL are identical and if you list them both work fine. But
when they are used in the calculation F_MATL works, but F-MATL. doesn't.
Can anyone see what the problem is?

Re: [U2] uniobjects and multiple select lists

2011-08-21 Thread Curt Stewart
Doug,

I don't know UniObjects well enough, but since its still the weekend, I
figured I could throw out a thought until someone more knowledgeable in
UniObjects respons. You should be able to select the list to a list number
and then readnext from the assigned list number? In basic, Universe, it's
something like;

SELECT FILE TO 3
...
READNEXT KEY FROM 3
...

Looking at the UniObjects (.NET) manual you should be able to do something
like;

UniSelectList uSelect = uSession.CreateselectList();where uselect should
be a reference # 0 - 9 or 10

I don't know if you've already tried something like this, or even if it
helps, I hope so. It's something to try.

I look forward to hearing if this helps.

I am trying to write a c# program that will do multiple selects each one
using the list from the previous select. I can't seem to find a way to
do this (in uniobjects) ,I think/hope it can be done and in this case I
cannot write a subroutine to do it (yes I agree it is probably the best
way). Is it possible just using uniobjects to use a previous select
(did I mention I do not want to save the list) in a new select?

thanks

Re: [U2] CONV MCU on indexed field?

2011-07-26 Thread Curt Stewart
Chris,
The problem is that your index was built case sensitive and now you're requests
are upper case only so it will only get upper case indexes. You need to rebuild
the index with the dictionary item that does the MCU, that way all of your
indexes are upper case.

Chris,
Bscan is a universe command that will let you traverse a secondary index. Say
the last company on the page was ABC Company, your BSCAN commands match value
could be Abc and then step thru the list with a loop. The UV docs description
isn't too bad.

Re: [U2] SELECT question, paginated select.

2011-07-20 Thread Curt Stewart
Chris,
I agree with Bill, using an index is your best solution. Are you able to apply
any kind of filter criteria to the names? If not here's one of your dilemmas...
If you make your drop down list too small nobody will use it because it will
take too long to get to anyone beyond the A's. If you make it too long it will
be cumbersome to find someone on the page and the build time of the drop down
list on the client side may be too slow. I strongly recommend, from experience,
using something other than a dropdown list, even using a combo box list allows
the user to provide some criteria to narrow the search.

Re: [U2] Extreme slow down on Universe periodically

2011-04-12 Thread Curt Stewart
Thanks to all that have replied. We're still busy researching and testing
but we did catch a break yesterday and it appears that the problem could be
the same that Wol mentioned. We have had reports of CPU spikes in the past,
but these were only reported in off hours and usually the following day or
later. Yesterday however, they noticed a process that was Spiking using
100% CPU. We were able to track it to the user and find out exactly what
they were doing. The user confirmed that they would just exit from the
telnet session window (Windows Telnet) and not log off properly. When I
tested this, the Process immediately began spiking.

We're thinking and hoping that the slow downs that we have experienced are
the cumulative affects of multiple bad disconnects and CPU spikes. I have
contacted Rocket to see if/when this issue has been resolved and we will
keep monitoring the server.

Again thanks for the help and input. We're still going through several of
the suggestions to see what impact they may have.

This is an old problem, that might well be resolved on 10.2, but do you
have any rogue uvtelnets? We used to get that - they'd get disconnected
somehow from their user, and then grab 100% cpu. Kill them, and things
went back to normal (we had to crash them, they wouldn't kill, by
attaching the debugger or something).

Charles mentioned the network. Are your network buffers too large? I'm
beginning to pick up from my reading on a hardware/software mismatch at
the TCP level, and network slowdown (and catastrophic failure) are the
result.

Cheers,
Wol

We recommend and use PrintWizard. I like that it not only allows you to
create and format documents to a PDF but also direct it to the printer, Fax

Here is a question for this group.

Has anyone been able to generate PDF files directly from UniData and/or
UniVerse without having a manual step involved? In other words, just
running a program using the standard PRINTER ON and PRINTER OFF commands,
and having the output be a PDF file?

Any pointers would be very welcome.

I'm sure you'll already have this in mind but I see the slow down as a
symptom that can be caused by any number of things so even though I'm sure
collaboration will be very helpful, it's not guaranteed that the same
problem would exist in both locations. What may have passed inspection at
your clients site may be the cause at Curt's client site.

But you guys already knew that, I'm sure, so I'm just stating the obvious.

Curt, one of our clients has a large site where this has been a
chronic issue for about a year. They've done all the exercises
with process monitors, network monitors, etc. Rocket has been
all over this but I'm not sure they have a solid resolution.
I'll link you guys up off-list so that you may be able to benefit

[U2] Extreme slow down on Universe periodically

2011-04-08 Thread Curt Stewart
Has anyone in the group experienced this issue and found a resolution?

My client is reporting the periodic slow down of their system.  It slows
down to almost the point of a hang.  This affects both existing processes
(menu selections, data entry, reports) and logins.  Their system admins
(IBM) reports that it is a Universe or application problem.  I haven’t been
able to identify any runaway processes or hogs.  The log files that I’ve
looked at haven’t shed any light on the matter.  Could there be a log file
that I’m overlooking that might need to be cleared?  But if it’s an
undersized file, why wouldn’t it be a consistent problem?  I’m hoping that
the group might be able to suggest some things to look at and consider.

Any and all suggestions would be appreciated.

Environment
  Universe 10.2.10
    Windows Server 2003
Virtual Machine (sorry don’t know any details on this component)
34 user license, only about 15 active

Thanks for your help.

[U2] [Repost] Response from mvCommunitymap

2011-03-17 Thread Curt Stewart
First off we want to thank everyone that has visited, provided feedback and
have made contributions to mvCommunitymap.com. Secondly, I apologize for the
length of this post, but I do feel the need to clarify some issues.

We did anticipate some skepticism from the mvCommunity and I apologize for
not responding to your posts yesterday.

There are two reasons why we haven't publicized everyone in our database.
# 1, We have to respect the Users privacy and confidentiality, not
just end-users, but vendors as well. As a vendor, how often do you advertise
the tools that you use to run your business. We don't unless we thought it
would have a positive impact on sales. So for an end-user how would
marketing "We use MV" positively impact their sales?

Secondly, which I thought might have been too obvious, is that we
are a business. mvCommunitymap does provide a free service to the entire
community, users and vendors. It does not however provide free advertising,
except to User Groups, they get their group profile displayed at no charge.
Why, because generally speaking a User Group is giving back to the
mvCommunity by providing networking opportunities and operating at cost.
Every one else will need to pay for the advertising.

Since we are a business, yes, we hope to get some new business out of this
venture. Not by poaching, but by and through advertising. We can say
confidently that more companies have heard of mvCommunitymap and TRI-SYS
today than on Monday. Will it lead to more business? We don't know, that's
the gamble of advertising. But, while advertising our business, we have
been able to give something back to the mvCommunity. Something that the
mvCommunity can use to advertise itself, in our opinion.

This is not a scheme to scam you out of your client lists. In fact, for
those of you that understandably, don't want to release your customer names,
we offer you a way of contributing, maintaining the anonymity of customers
and getting some free advertising. If you want to participate, supply us
with a list of your clients, but ONLY include your internal client number or
some other code that can uniquely identify them to YOU and their zip code.
This way you are not releasing any customer identifiable information to
anyone. And, in return, when anyone clicks on the map marker, we will
display "This location is verified by Your Vendor Name Here."

Please explain to me if we are missing how this would violate A) your
confidentiality with your customers and B) how we would be able to poach
from this type of list. We do however see a downside to this. There will
be an increased chance of duplication.

We are working on a routine that multiple vendors could run against their
list to produce a uniquely identifiable code, based on user name and zip.
The trick is how do we make it so that the code can't be reversed engineered
by us to reproduce the Customer name and zip. I'm open to any ideas or
suggestions.

We have been made aware, this morning, that some countries zip/postal codes
are a bit more accurate than the US and the location revealed is too
accurate. We are working to rectify this issue, but if anyone else has
concerns such as this, please let us know.

As we originally stated in our announcement, what really is going to make
this site powerful is the participation of the mvCommunity. We are happy to
work with you to address any concerns that you may have. We know that this
site can benefit the entire Global mvCommunity with your help. The stronger
this site is the more it will benefit us all.

A posting in CDP, asked why should we be trusted. Well for most of you we
haven't earned that trust, so I'm not asking you to trust us, I'm just
asking you to participate in the process for now and we plan to earn your
trust as time goes by.

Again, thanks for your time and feedback.
Sincerely,

Curt Stewart

[U2] [AD]New website for the MV Community[AD]

2011-03-15 Thread Curt Stewart
We are announcing the launch of a new website today for the multivalue
community, www.mvcommunitymap.com.

We have taken our database of multivalue users and vendors and have begun
mapping them using Google Maps and eventually Google Earth. Our goal, albeit
a lofty one, is to eventually map 80%-90% of the user community world wide.

We believe that this tool can be a very valuable contribution to the
mvCommunity. End-Users can use it to view resources available (Developers,
Consultants or Vendors) in their area. Vendors can use it to demonstrate
the strength and diversity of the mvCommunity, locally and globally, in
their sales endeavors.

To make this the powerful tool that I know it can be, we need the help of
the community. We are asking for everyone's help in identifying as many of
the multivalue End Users, Vendors and Software products as possible. Send us
the name of your employer, your past employers, MV Vendors, the applications
that you've worked with, the MV Tools that you've used and of course, your
name. We want to map all things multivalue. To contribute, you can use the
contact us page, or email your contributions to i...@mvcommunitymap.com.
Contributions should contain at a minimum the Company Name or Developers
Name, City, State or Zip/Postal Code and Country. If a product, Product
Name, Vendor Name and Zip/Postal Code & Country.

All information received will be kept confidential but we will contact
companies and individuals to confirm their current multivalue status.

Thanks for your time and I look forward to hearing your feedback.

Curt, I wasn't watching this tread earlier, sorry.
This is the Exact same problem that Mike Roosa at Tolt is having,
as documented in another recent thread here. Rocket has been
unable to thoroughly diagnose the issue but tl_server does seem
to be either the culprit or a "telltale victim". I highly
recommend you contact Rocket and tell them this may be related to
the Tolt situation. Note that their environment is also
virtualized in VMware. Perhaps there is something in VMware,
like flushing, or some abnormal condition, which causes tl_server
to start spinning.

Good luck bud.

Re: [U2] CPU Spikes to 100%

2010-03-26 Thread Curt Stewart
Thanks to everyone for their ideas and feedback.

I will try running PORT.STATUS if I can ever be on the system when it
occurs. I'm probably the 3rd or 4th person that would be notified. I will
have to see if we can get the #1 person to access UV and run it.

I don't think that the recompile will do it, but it won't hurt.

Brian, under your scenario, would the process ever go away on it's own?
They are using just the plain telnet app that comes with windows, and I can
see them just closing the window without logging off. I'll see if I can't
duplicate the issue by trying this tonight.

Leroy, how would the keepalive option help if the user has closed the
window? Would the socket be closed gracefully once keepalive didn't get its
response back?

Thanks again for the ideas and suggestions.

The environment is a virtualized Windows 2003 Server and Universe 10.2.10

On occasion, I’ve been notified twice, it may have occurred more often, a
Universe process (tl_server.exe) will consume 100% of the CPU.  When this
happens, support is automatically notified and they need an explanation.  As
far as the application goes, there is only one background job and all other
jobs would execute immediately.  I was last notified when it occurred at
2:20am on the 3rd and then again apparently this week. There are some users
based in India that could be using the system at the time these occur, but I
have not been able to make a connection to a user process yet.

Doe's anyone have any ideas why this might be happening or suggestions on
how to identify what ever is causing the spike? Is there a Universe log
that might be able to give me a clue?

Thanks for any suggestions.

Re: [U2] [UV] odd problem with read statement assigning variable with random data with else clause in pick flavor

2009-12-23 Thread Curt Stewart
Troy,

The things that stick out to me about this, is that CITEM is a common, it
has changed values and it hasn't been reproduced outside of the 4gl code.

I would look into the common statements of the code surrounding and
including the code that you have isolated this problem to and verify that
they all contain the same variables and in the same order. If the common
variables order has been mixed up than CITEM is being assigned some other
variables value, perhaps a screen control value, since its and escape
sequence. Normally common's are defined in an INCLUDE file, so if most
programs have the include file, check those that don't, if any.

Also, is it possible that F.FILE has a trigger associated with it that might
be manipulating the result of CITEM?

The other thing that I would check out would be the integrity of F.FILE, has
the file been corrupted? I'm guessing not, but one more thing to eliminate.

I know that these don't explain why it would happen on Readu and not Read,
but they are worth checking out.

Good Luck and Happy Holidays.

Thanks for the replies...

In this example I was using, the ID was not on file, so it would not
have taken the LOCKED clause. I just added the locked clause to my
actual failing code to test the theory and it still takes the ELSE
clause because the record is truly not on file.

I tried George's idea of using named common and the problem still
happens.

One last clarification, the problem seems to occur if the READ statement
is a READU. If the statement is a regular READ, it does not happen.

Hi Troy

The problem with that code is that the else clause is taken when the
record is locked. You are assuming if the else clause is taken that the
record does not exist, which is not a safe assumption. I would suggest

Readu citem from fv, key locked
* locked options
End then
* then options
End else
Citem = ""
end

Subject: [U2] [UV] odd problem with read statement assigning variable

We are running universe 10.2.10 in pick flavor.

I have a program (part of a 4gl subroutine) that simplified does the
following:

CITEM = ""

READU CITEM FROM F.FILE, CID THEN

END ELSE

IF CITEM # "" THEN PRINT "CITEM IS NOT NULL!"

END

According to the documentation, when running in pick flavor, the value
of CITEM is unchanged if the read fails.

What happens is that CITEM is sometimes assigned to a random value and
not NULL. Right now it is being assigned to zero. Last week, this
same CITEM was being assigned to an escape sequence (about 8 characters
long) when the read failed.

CITEM is a non-named common variable. This issues does NOT happen if
CITEM is not a common variable.

The result also has varied if I use READU vs READ. Clearly there is a
bug here in retaining the value of CITEM with a READ statement in pick
flavor. Unfortunately, I have not been able to create a simple example
to reproduce this problem outside of the 4gl. And this does not happen
in all the code, only in one section so far and IS reproducible in this
one case from logon session to logon session.

Any ideas?

Here is an interesting tidbit I happened to run across.

PROGRAM A:

OPEN "","FILE1" TO F.FILE1 ELSE STOP "NO FILE1"
OPEN "","FILE2" TO F.FILE2 ELSE STOP "NO FILE2"
* F.FILETOUSE = F.FILE1 (Adding this here will get rid of the compile
warning)
BEGIN CASE
CASE X=1 F.FILETOUSE = F.FILE1
CASE X=2 F.FILETOUSE = F.FILE2
CASE -1 F.FILETOUSE = F.FILE1
END CASE
READ XDATA FROM F.FILETOUSE,"TEST" ELSE XDATA=""

The above program when compiled says F.FILETOUSE never assigned a value
and when it executes, gives an improper file type error

HOWEVER:

PROGRAM B:

OPEN "","FILE1" TO F.FILE1 ELSE STOP "NO FILE1"
OPEN "","FILE2" TO F.FILE2 ELSE STOP "NO FILE2"
F.FILETOUSE=F.FILE1
IF X=1 THEN F.FILETOUSE = F.FILE1
IF X=2 THEN F.FILETOUSE = F.FILE2
READ XDATA FROM F.FILETOUSE,"TEST" ELSE XDATA=""

Compiles and run just fine, no errors.

This is using UV 10.0.2 under the Prime Information flavor

David,

Thanks for the ideas. I don't have a great deal of access to this server,
it's being managed by IBM. I think you can guess the kind of red tape
involved with doing anything.

I'm pretty sure that most if not all the UV config's are set to the
defaults. I didn't think about comparing the two. I'll get a copy of both
and do that this week.

Thanks for the ideas, I'll post my findings.

Did you do a "sanity check" (on your system/UV setup - not you:))- being a
Windows platform check- no real-time anti-virus scanner is in operation on
every file modification and that the UV config is NOT using the defaults
(perhaps you should be setting it to the something similar to your AIX UV
config - as applicable). Or any run-away processes do you get them same
thing after you rebooted your server?

Phil,

My test file is 1009,1 type 18. My record id is just a sequential number 1
to 10,000 for this test file and the data is only 40-50 more bytes. So I
don't think the file size is the problem. I've tested the logic by calling
the trigger subroutine direct from the program and I get a 2 second process
time, so I don't think the logic is the problem either.

Are you on Universe or Unidata?

Re: [U2] Universe Triggers

2009-10-30 Thread Curt Stewart
Thanks Doug,

That's pretty much the conclusion I came to after I ran my test on a 10.3.3
Universe system.

Unfortunately, this application doesn't use a common WRITE or DELETE
routine, so I get to update about 90 programs with the audit logic. It'll be
tedious but not too bad.

Thanks for the feedback

Curt,

We run Web applications a 25 second delay would be a death march for our
staff with the users pointing things at us. This is a known Universe issue
and to be fixed on a later release according the folks at U2 University.

We wrote our own auditing the works with Universe and Unidata. This is
pretty easy for us since high percentage of our writes and deletes are
handled out of a single subroutine. The programs that use their own WRITE
or DELETE had to have all another line or two added to complete the auditing
processes.

We have about a 50-300ms delay for the additional read and writes to the
audit file. This strategy works very well for our call center application.

Regards,
Doug

The speed issue is not in the subroutine itself. I tried a subroutine that
did nothing, just a return and the process takes 25 seconds compared to 2
seconds with out a trigger. My main trigger subroutine is using a common
for the file opens and that did cut the processing time down from 2 minutes
to 25 seconds, but 25 seconds still seems pretty slow.

Does Universe require any special settings for triggers? Or file types?
Does the account have to be a specific flavor of Pick? Permissions?

I don't know any other thoughts or suggestions? My searches have not turned
up anything useful but someone's post did say that they found it to be slow
on 10.2 but they did not elaborate or get a response that I found.

Thanks for your help.

is the trigger program doing any file opens? That would probably be your
slow down.

I've not tried to setup a common with any of the triggers I've setup, since
the number of writes has been minimal for us (maybe 5 per hour maximum).

[U2] Universe Triggers

2009-10-30 Thread Curt Stewart
I’m testing using triggers to maintain an Audit log of transactions.
Everything works, the file, the subroutine, but the trigger process is
extremely slow.

My test program loops through 1 to 1 and writes a record to my test file
with the trigger.  Without the trigger in place the program runs in 2
seconds, with the trigger in place the program runs in 25 seconds.  The
timings are roughly the same if the trigger program is doing nothing more
than a return.  I’ve also tested calling the trigger subroutine from the
program (without the trigger on the file) and the process runs in 2-3
seconds.

This is Universe 10.2.10 on a virtual Windows 2003 server.  The trigger file
is type 18 and the trigger was created with this statement;
CREATE TRIGGER AUDIT_LOG BEFORE UPDATE OR INSERT OR DELETE ON
TEST.TRIGGER.FILE FOR EACH ROW CALLING '*apps*AUDIT.LOG.TRIGGER';

It appears that just calling a trigger significantly degrades the process.
Does anyone have any ideas or suggestions.

Thanks for any help you can provide.

[U2] Converting from mvBase to Universe

2009-07-19 Thread Curt Stewart
I have a client that is considering moving from an mvBase system to a
Universe (Windows) system. A lot of their processes are tied to specific
ports and ranges. Is there an easy solution in Universe to "nail" the
telnet ports for the users?

Also, they use UREAD and UWRITE and take advantage of the MVClients ability
to read and write to the local workstation, instead of the server when not
using MVClient. I haven't heard of this separation being available in
Universe, other than using something like Accuterm, am I right? Or is there
an easy way to distinguish between writing to the local drive vs. the
server? How has others handled this conversion issue? Right now we're
planning on assigning each user a directory on the server to write to, does
anyone have any alternate ideas?

Thanks for the help, I appreciate hearing your solutions.

Thanks,
Curt

[U2] UV/NET questions/confirmation

2008-08-20 Thread Curt Stewart
First off let me apologize for my last post. I realized it was unsigned the
moment I released the button after clicking on Send.

I've just reviewed the Uv/Net documentation and would just like to get
confirmation on my understanding of what I read.

For UV/NET to work, both systems need to be running Universe and UV/NET. Do
both have to have the same user licenses? What is the minimum license count
needed for the remote server, given the local server is licensed for 34 users?

The documentation states that the Unix version must be installed and
authorized, but the Windows version is installed and licensed. Does this mean
that the Windows version does not need to be authorized and can be used right
out of the box?

Thanks for all the help and insight.

[U2] more UV questions, triggers & who

2008-08-20 Thread Curt Stewart
Thanks to everyone who has been helping to re-educate me on Universe.
Apparently I've successfully managed to comingle my Unidata and Universe
features and now need help separating the two. Unfortunately I haven't been
able to get all my answers from the manuals.

My next question, doesn't Universe support Triggers, besides the SQL triggers?
I searched through the manual and found reference to the SQL triggers but
nothing yet for Universe triggers. Can someone confirm this for me? And if
triggers are supported, which manual tells me about them.

Also, when I do a WHO it returns the system id and the login id. I'm assuming
that it's a configuration setting, but how do I not include the system id? Is
it part of the Flavor settings? I've never seen it before so it was a complete
surprise to me. Any directions in how I can get this back to normal would be
appreciated.

[U2] How to setup Distributed files across the network

2008-08-18 Thread Curt Stewart
Can someone tell me what is required to setup and use distributed files over a
network. My client want's to separate the Application from the Data, so that
each is on a separate server. I'm sure someone has already done this or
something similiar before and I would appreciate any insight you could share on
how to set this up, what if any, additional Universe modules are required.

Any feedback would greatly be appreciated.

Thanks for all the help to date.

[U2] Universe Windows reading a Virtual Tape File

2008-08-17 Thread Curt Stewart
I apologize if this is a dumb question, but I haven't found a definitive answer
anywhere including the manuals.

I'm still in the process of converting a D3 application to Universe and I've
T-Dumped a bunch of file dictionaries to a VTF and now I just want to be able
to T-LOAD them into the Universe Account. I've tried setting the device to the
VTF but it won't read the file. What am I missing? I would appreciate any
comments that you are willing to share.

Thanks for your help.

Sincerely,

[U2] Accessing Active Directory

2008-07-12 Thread Curt Stewart
I need to pull a users Active Directory Group settings on a Universe Windows
system to integrate into the application. Has somebody already done this
and can you give me any suggestions and recommendations on how to accomplish
this?

I've found scripts to read the AD settings, but I don't know how to execute
the script from within Universe Windows.

Any recommendations, suggestions and examples are greatly appreciated.

Thanks in advance.
