Re: Backporting dh_python2 stuff

2011-01-29 Thread John Dong
Hi Loïc,

Indeed your intuition on not backporting python-defaults/python agrees with
mine. In cases like this, my recommendation is to make minimal source changes
necessary to linaro-image-tools to make it build against lucid. Such source
changes stand a much higher chance of being accepted, and much lower risk of
causing unwanted side effects to other packages.

[Bug 302987] Re: Please backport bzr 2.0.2 from karmic-updates

2010-02-09 Thread John Dong
Fortunately bzr fails in a reasonable manner (for the most part) when an
incompatible plugin exists. But yeah, I'd like to take more of the
plugins from karmic-updates. Ideally in future Ubuntu packaging (I
didn't check if it's already the case), that the plugin packages have
specific enough dependencies on the version of bzr required that we
wouldn't have this problem again.

Any volunteers for checking buildability of plugins from karmic-updates for

[Bug 480547] Re: memcached pretty darn out of date.

2009-11-11 Thread John Dong
Let's handle the two together:

Doing a quick build test:

Karmic's version backports cleanly to Jaunty and appears to work in my
initial testing.

Lucid's version backports cleanly to Karmic.

Lucid's version does not backport to Jaunty because of pbuilder-
satisfydepends-dummy: Depends: quilt (= 0.46-7) but it is not
installable

Given that, my initial solution would be Karmic-jaunty-backports and
Lucid-Karmic

Unless someone wants to look into the quilt build-dep.

[Bug 430913] Re: Please backport nginx 0.6.35 to Hardy, Intrepid from Jaunty Security

2009-10-13 Thread John Dong
Hi Jonathan,

It is my oversight; The Confirmed state indicates that the backport has
been verified by someone in the community to be appropriate. In Progress
or Fix Committed should be set by a backports team member to indicate
official blessing or sponsored upload for source-change backports,
respectively.

In this case, I've reviewed the debdiffs and sponsored them, and
should've set to Fix Committed for both the Hardy and Intrepid tasks.

I apologize for the confusion.

[Bug 283137] Re: Please backport OpenOffice.org 3 to Hardy

2009-10-05 Thread John Dong
Thanks, Mark, for chiming in.

Indeed LTS does not imply that every major piece of newly released
software will be backported, nor is the Backports team interested in
trying to do so if it means sacrificing the stability or supportability
of the OS...

To move this forward, in my mind:

(1) We don't need any more comments about why we need to move this
forward. We understand that generally, folks would like to have the
newest OpenOffice release.

(2) Any additional dependencies needed to build OpenOffice on Hardy
should be tracked down for us to decide if they are appropriate to bring
in.

(3) Furthermore, someone needs to step up to the plate in terms of
promising that the (somewhat frequent) security fixes to OpenOffice will
be backported too.

A good first step is to attempt to get Karmic's OpenOffice building in a Hardy
PPA with as few dependency backports as possible.

P.S. I saw no evidence that the reason there isn't a Hardy OpenOffice backport
is a lack of computational resources to build it. Chris's PPA states that he
has limited time to maintain packages for all supported releases, which is
understandably the case.

[Bug 283137] Re: Please backport OpenOffice.org 3 to Hardy

2009-10-05 Thread John Dong
Mozilla Team dailies are in a PPA because they are experimental in
nature; OpenOffice 3.1 has no reason to be unless the process of
backporting it requires some insane procedure that makes them unsuitable
for Backports' quality standards.

The red tape to get it into Backports is solely demonstrating the
ability to make the package in such a way that it doesn't unleash hell
upon the users; the value of having it in backports instead of a PPA for
the users is the peace of mind that comes with knowing that the Ubuntu
team has deemed the package suitable for general adoption.

Once the initial package is made, I don't imagine that backporting security
fixes to it will constitute major work. However, the same could be said about
our previous, say, Firefox backports but security fixes for those fell through
the cracks as users became generally disinterested in the packages.

[Bug 283137] Re: Please backport OpenOffice.org 3 to Hardy

2009-10-05 Thread John Dong
Yes, the version of OpenOffice shipped with Hardy LTS does have 3 year
guaranteed security updates.

I was saying that if a backport is done of a newer OpenOffice version,
we need to make sure someone is willing to provide the same guarantee.

[Bug 323546] Re: xen-meta only depends on Xen 3.2 packages

2009-02-12 Thread John Dong
ACK'ed and uploaded last debdiff. For the record, the IRC discussion was
that

(1) Alternate dependencies on 3.2/3.3 are just more confusing for the
user and doesn't really offer anything additional -- you can't mix 3.2
and 3.3 and expect things to work, though these dependencies would allow
it.

(2) Creating new -3.2/-3.3 metapackages will pose headaches for
upgrades.

(2) Instead, we will offer pure-3.3 dependencies in hardy-backports such
that it will take a dist-upgrade / explicit upgrade to install the
backport, and it forces all the 3.3 packages to be installed.

Re: Security Policy of backported software

2008-12-19 Thread John Dong
Strictly speaking, backports officially does not guarantee any period or type of
support, which is why they are worded as unofficial updates in software
sources manager. in reality, the backporters do address security issues in the
backports repo on a best-effort basis and take care not to backport things that
tend to lead to security maintenance issues.

When you use debuild -S to regenerate a source package, you need to have

above error messages state. It is necessary to evaluate the 'clean' target
in the makefile.

prevu works around this by using pdebuild's internal option (man pdebuild,
search internal) which uses the pbuilder chroot to do all of this work.

Re: make a backport package using pbuilder

2008-12-17 Thread John Dong
Backport building is even easier. For the most part, no source changes are
required. All you have to do is use dch -i to create a new changelog
entry(*) acknowledging that it's a backport, then run pbuilder on this new
source package.

The exception is when the Jaunty version requires a new build dependency
compared to the Intrepid. You can look at the debian/changelog entries to
make an educated guess about whether or not that was necessary. Usually it's
just for forcing a build against a newly uploaded library in Jaunty or
Debian Sid and safe to remove, but when it's not, I've previously asked
Ubuntu devs to make it very clear in the changelog that they weren't kidding
when specifying a build dependency version (for example, nasty bugs in
supporting libraries)

(*) The new changelog entry should be a LOWER version number than Jaunty;
this is so that when you upgrade, you are guaranteed to pull in the new
Jaunty version. If your backport had the exact same or higher version number
as the Jaunty package then APT may not consider it as needing to be
upgraded, leading to confusion and dependency headaches in your next
upgrade! The ~ operator in the version is very helpful: 1.2.3-1~foo is
less than 1.2.3-1. So, Ubuntu convention is to append ~intrepid1 to the
first attempted backport, ~intrepid2 to the 2nd, and so on. Various
unofficial packages uses other ~suffixes so feel free to pick one that
identifies your backports uniquely!

P.S. Also see the prevu tool in the Ubuntu repos:
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Prevu

It's designed to automate this process in one fell swoop, such as prevu
bash which goes to LaunchPad and automatically grabs the newest Jaunty
sources for bash, and builds it. It is powered by pbuilder -- in fact it
uses the pdebuild invocation of pbuilder. Prevu also functions just like
the pdebuild command when you run it with no arguments within a Debian
source directory so you can use it as a replacement for your pbuilder setup.

Re: make a backport package using pbuilder

2008-12-17 Thread John Dong
Ah, for official backports see the procedure at
https://help.ubuntu.com/community/UbuntuBackports

The procedure is more of a quality-assurance (testing) one rather than a
build-and-upload workflow -- the build system takes care of the actual
backporting work

I'd recommend using prevu's build environment for testing backports; I've
spent the time to make it work more or less out of the box without all this
work :)

dch -i
debuild -S pbuilder build ../new_version_backport.dsc

How do I get the Jaunty package in a Intrepid environment? Or the source?

You can use the Launchpad +source page, like
https://edge.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/bash

Follow a version link to take you to a .dsc URL. Then just run dget -ux
http://that_link/foo.dsc;

Or see the attached script 'lpget'. For example, lpget bash fetches bash
from jaunty and extracts it (equivalent to dget -ux, just it finds the dsc
URL automatically); lpget bash/intrepid fetches bash from intrepid.

Debdiff looks good, though IMO the first changelog entry should be
Backport from {Origin distribution} to {target distribution}. Remember
that users will be reading these through Update Manager which doesn't
intuitively show the version numbers to indicate what's going on.

[Bug 283137] Re: Please backport OpenOffice.org 3 to Hardy

2008-10-18 Thread John Dong
I spoke with Chris today in detail about this, and he doesn't sound
terribly confident yet that openoffice.org 3's final release is not
going to have some major bugs discovered in the near future. Since he is
most familiar with their release cycle and previous track record, I am
going to go with his opinion on this.

since it sounds like the side-by-side installation packaging is broken
beyond repair for now, I am very wary about replacing Hardy's Openoffice
with a version that is not very well tested (particularly since as of
now the way to uninstall a backport and revert to the regular version
for complex multi-deb packages is not supported/tested). Let's wait a
bit and see how Openoffice is for Hardy.

As far as Intrepid, I think we can be slightly less cautious but not that much
so. Ideally it'd be nice to have a 3.0.1-type release before we go around
replacing Openoffice.

Since Ubuntu uses an ooo-build brand of Openoffice some of the large
benefits of OOo3 (like Office 2007 XML support) has been available in
our 2.4 builds for a while. Bottom line is I don't think anyone will
suffer too greatly without it for a little bit while we carefully figure
out our best path forward from here.

[Bug 284688] Re: Please Backport MySQL 5.0.67 from intrepid to hardy

2008-10-16 Thread John Dong
I personally do not feel comfortable backporting commonly-used server
packages that have a long track history of needing security update
maintenance because inevitably people lose interest and we cannot
guarantee the same 18 months or 5 years of security updates that the

worth it, other than the version number?

If you are referring to the 0.8.6.* security fix series, this is already

team that packaged this release for Intrepid and I'm almost confident it
relies on specific newer libraries in Intrepid.

+

[Bug 208836] Re: Backport bugfixes from Transmission 1.1x for Hardy

2008-04-07 Thread John Dong
Everyone: Note the updated description of the task. Since ClamAV needs a
similarly intrusive update, the Backports team has decided to open up
Hardy Backports earlier this release cycle, so we will handle the new
1.1x branch in Backports on a timely manner.

At the same time, we will go forward with applying Charles's patches to
the Hardy 1.06 package.

For this to continue, Charles, can you separate out your patches into one
change per patchfile? We will add a patch system into the Transmission package
if necessary. This will facilitate reviewing and maintaining the package for
Hardy. Thanks!

[Bug 212694] Re: firefox 3.0-b5-ppa segmentation fault

2008-04-06 Thread John Dong
This would appear like a bug in your custom theme's gtkrc. Most likely
Firefox simply didn't trip it before but now that GTK integration has
been further improved Firefox attempts to use that portion of your
theme.

[Bug 208091] Re: firefox will not open local files from remote files

2008-04-06 Thread John Dong
I can reproduce this on Hardy, let's move this bug report into Hardy.
(I'm also unsure if this is a bug or just a security feature with a poor
UI

2008-04-06 Thread John Dong
   psi | 0.11-3 | hardy/universe | source, amd64, i386, powerpc

This version is in Hardy. Is it ok to backport too?

[Bug 206570] Re: virt-manager is not installable

2008-04-06 Thread John Dong
Looks like we need these backports:
python-virtinst | 0.300.2-0ubuntu3 | hardy/universe | all (src pkg: virtinst)
python-gtk-vnc | 0.3.4-0ubuntu1 | hardy/universe | amd64, i386, powerpc

They are both new Hardy packages so they should be trivial backports

[Bug 191796] Re: Please backport firefox-3.0 3.0~b4 final

2008-04-05 Thread John Dong
Scott, the debdiffs in comment #25 (not the attached ones) apply against
the respective Hardy versions they are derived from. As of 3 hours ago
we've gotten new Firefox packages in Hardy, which I am *NOT* interested
in backporting right now due to widespread reports on the internet(s) of
CPU usage regressions and possibly packaging regressions.

The beta4 packages, however, I have been using on three systems for a
long time with no problems.

The dsc links to full sources are available in that comment too which
may be more convenient for you to use.
