 receivers work out of the box in Linux.

That's great. Does that mean if I simply plug it in to my Ubuntu 6.10
box I will be able to select and record programmes at pre-set times and
then burn them to DVD for future viewing?
 
 It all depends on the market. Manufacturers are starting to put out
 Linux code now, so things like that will change.

That's good too as long as it says suitable for Linux on the package.

Norman  I think you're pointing to something very important here.  I 
started to make the mental shift towards Open Source/Linux when a few 
months ago, as an MS DOS/Windows power-user for years, I spent £200 on a 
SlimDevices Squeezebox and discovered that it had Open Source music 
server software, and didn't work as I wanted 'out of the box'.

At first, being used to the 'plug  play' simplicity of Windows, I got 
really annoyed at having to mess about in the innards of the software to 
  get the thing to work.  My mind ran on such thoughts as 'You sure as 
hell wouldn't buy one of these things for your Granny!' and 'How dare 
they charge £200 for something that doesn't work unless you devote your 
every waking hour to it for a fortnight?!?'  (I did get it working fine 
- and it is awesome!)

Then I gradually began to understand that I had entered a different 
country.  Here, configuring, tweaking, searching forum posts, reading 
'How-to' docs, and asking for help were the (acceptable) price to to pay 
for immense flexibility, and getting - or getting closer to - a device 
that I could endlessly adjust to my own 'wish list'.

So when I tried out Linux (because someone gave me an old computer with 
no operating system), I was surprised to find that the 'do-it-yourself 
and help-each-other' world of SlimServer was actually a small corner of 
a whole universe that worked like this.  And this changing 
consciousness, started by SlimServer, allowed me (just!) to get through 
the frustrating awfulness of trying to get my wifi PCMCIA card working 
with Dapper, which I had also installed on my laptop.  I tell you, I did 
come very near giving up on Ubuntu that fortnight.

But I didn't, because I'd imperceptibly shifted into a different 
relationship with the technology - just like moving to live in a foreign 
culture, and starting to appreciate and enjoy the different attitudes it 
embodied.  So it was no real surprise to discover a little later that 
Linux and the Open Source movement were not just about technology but 
were embodiments of a pervading philosophy (cf Richahd Stallman, Founder 
of GNU, 'Free software is a matter of liberty not price').

And it's this difference of culture - actually a difference of reality - 
that leads to the conflicts between the opposing MS and Linux forces 
(like  the conflicts among crowds of opposing supporters at 
international football matches, and for rather similar reasons).  No 
amount of rational argument, sound logic, being clearly right, will 
convince someone on 'the other side'.

What works, rather, is experiencing something of the quality behind 
Ubuntu. For me, that was almost accidental;  but the opportunity might 
be offered more systematically: an invitation to 'come and see' without 
being pressurised or given the hard sell;  noticing that Dell offers 
Ubuntu as an option when you're browsing their site;  seeing a cheerful 
and well-written article in a university paper;  seeing a poster for a 
free lunch-time talk, which, when you go, turns out to be lively and 
entertaining;  doing an article (and offering a free support service?) 
in the local free press.  My feeling, from my own experience, is that 
the key is offering people pleasant experiences associated with Ubuntu; 
  being friendly, respectful, and helpful;  giving people options and 
choices, rather than making them feel they have to sign up for something 
(live CD and easily-reversible dual boot are examples of this).  Because 
the problem is that you have to help them get through the change of 
culture when it gets hard - and it will get hard.  (If you've used Linux 
for years, or never had to make this change yourself, it's easy to 
underestimate this strength of this obstacle).

Sorry to have gone on so long - I guess, being a recent convert and, 
worse yet, a product of university during the late 60's and early 70's 
when we invested such hope in 'Community', I'm a bit fired up about 
Ubuntu and the open source idea!

It's definitely a case of getting people to see Ubuntu.

A friend of mine had a computer on which the mainboard had failed. I
had a spare mainboard knocking about - so I replaced his with it -
this of course requiring a re-install of Windows. My friend didn't
have a licensed copy of Windows so I installed Ubuntu Feisty on his PC
instead.

After installing Eve Online (using WINE) and Beryl on it, I showed him
how to install applications. He was amazed that he could simply search
for the type of app he wanted in add/remove programs, click apply, and
Ubuntu would download and install the app for him. He commented wow -
Ubuntu is much easier to use than Windows...

My friend's girlfriend was also knocking about in the background and
came over to see what we were doing. After about 5 minutes she asked
how much this Ubuntu had cost. It took some time to convince her it
was free, after which she asked if I could remove Win XP from her
computer and replace it with Ubuntu. Her son was next - He loved the
Beryl effects, and asked if he could have it on his computer

Sometimes a leaflet won't cut it (how many do you dump in the bin
first thing in the morning). People have to actually see it in action
to get interested, and when they do see it, they're usually easily
converted.

If all I wanted was to watch freeview television then I agree with you
but I want more. I want to be able to record programmes to my HDD and
burn them to DVD etc.

Yeah, that's pretty irritating.

With users I've converted over, I've always ended up setting OO to
write to MS file format by default. It's a nuisance, but it helps
avoid people whinging when they can't open their latest masterpiece in
MS Word...

Yahoo's reported merger/takeover talks with MS means it's open (!) to
selling its independence to the highest bidder.  That it's MS they're
talking with just emphasises my original stupidity and
short-sightedness.  I should have been more savvy to the long-term
threat of something like this, especially before parting with cash.

But now I've got to start looking at the alternatives on offer to the
various services of theirs that I've used.  I'm mainly looking for an
alternative to Flickr!, though a list of alternatives to all their
offerings would be helpful for trying something new and for when I come
across people who are also facing the threat of having the rug pulled
from beneath them.  This would also be handy to distribute if or when
the deal goes through.

Anyone use/recommend free alternatives?  I'm about to start the process
of researching this, but anyone's knowledge and experiences would be a
big help.

I would like to raise another point relevant to all UK citizens. We all,
in one way or another, pay taxes a fair proportion of which gets spent
on education. Thus, if schools could be persuaded to change to Ubuntu,
by how much would our taxes be reduced or cash released for other
beneficial things such as health? Surely, Ubuntu can do most, if not
all, of the things needed in schools. So, why are we not targeting our
local councillors with our propaganda. We have just had theirs in the
local elections so why not retaliate?

You may accuse me of being Political but then, isn't this freedom thing
that Linux users preach about, a Political philosophy?

Doesn't the French National Assembly run on Linux (possibly Ubuntu)?

I think the main argument would be the much-reduced cost of licensing,
but then when you're deploying hundreds of PCs I don't think the cost
per machine of Windows is all that high. Plus, the major factor is to
have IT engineers on site with the relevant experience, and retraining
takes a lot of time and money. I know Canonical offer support
services, but how this compares to companies offering Windows support
in terms of cost, I have no idea, and this would be another important
factor.

I do agree wholeheartedly - just thinking through a few of the issues involved!

Google's Picasa is quite good in my experience (and have an ubuntu
client running under an integrated, tweaked wine), but doesn't offer
nearly as many of the features of Flickr, I'm afraid, but its
desktop-web integration is useful.

I think I read recently that there is a scheme in France to give new
university students laptops with Linux installed.

specifically catered to schools and classrooms.

to push Open Source Software to our schools and governments.

It could be either the download, in which case you can fix it using
bittorent (do you know how to use this) - download ontop of the file

The complete Google group of services are good. Some of the programs
do work nativly under Linux with some exceptions. It's a shame about
Gtalk, but you can't have everything... I use several PC's running
different OS's, Googles browser sync is a real boon. I would be lost
without the spell checker in Google tool bar. I use Gmail as my
default email these days because of the multiple computers. I used to
use Yahoo for all of these tasks but in the last year or so Google has
become the centre of my on-line life.

affect your current set up at all, as everything runs from the CD and 
hard drives etc. are left alone.

Hi Gregory,

When you put the bootable CD into your drive and restart your machine,
Ubuntu will load up from the CD (known as a LiveCD). Everything runs
from the CD, so it won't touch your hard drives at all. As you can
appreciate, things will run a little slower while running from the CD.

If you decide that you would like to install Ubuntu from there, so you
can use it without the CD, there is an icon on the desktop Install.
The install procedure is very simple, and it helps you resize your
Windows partition if you have one.

While the install is going on, you are still able to access the
internet, so if you do have any questions at that point, feel free to
ask again on this mailing list, or you can talk to people in real-time

HI Kris,

I have had a play with Ubuntu. I also have a Kubuntu disk ready to play 
around with too.

I have realised that I may have trouble opening existing MS Office docs, 
mainly Word, some Excel and Access. Also couldn't play my mp3 files, of 
which I have many via Creative.

I presume there are tools to convert formats, so will demo again.

I came out of Ubuntu as I couldn't get on line. I will note my ADSL 
settings via Zoom USB modem, my Turnpike settings for POP3 email, and go 
in again.

Is there a big difference between Kubuntu and Ubuntu?

Initial impressions are that there is a bit more thought and input 
required of the user which I find healthy and stimulating. Windows takes 
all this away as if I am unable to fathom things out for myself. I also 
think that a better understanding of Ubuntu et al would lead to a better 
understanding of computers.

Looking forward to unleashing Beryl :-)

Open Office is the installed office suite in Ubuntu. It does a pretty
good job at opening most MS Office documents. However, as you
mentioned, there may be the odd document that doesn't play nice if
you're editing them in both Open Office and MS Office. You could

mp3 won't work out of box with Ubuntu, as there are some legal
implications with shipping it on the CD (the mp3 library needs to be

able to click on the mp3, and Ubuntu will prompt you to download what
it needs from the Internet. Providing you can get connected :-)

I have no idea about this. I ditched my USB modem a while ago. Maybe

This little extension that I found out about this morning is pretty

It's nice and simple. Clicking on a button birngs up a graphical
interface with checkboxes for three different formats - Open Ofice,
Microsoft Office and PDF. Simply exmplain which is which, and they get
all three saved by default.

Just to clarify, the user does not have to pay for use of the MP3 patent 
if it is for his or her personal use; a commercial distributor has to, 
which means, for example, that it cannot be included on a cover disc or 
in a commercially-sold book.  So, you have to download them.

I had the same problem years ago when I was using a Speedtouch DSL 
modem, and there are drivers you can download for that.  What model of 
Zoom modem do you have?  This website claims that at least one model 
does work with Linux:

Just to introduce myself, I'm Matthew Smith, and I live in New Malden 
(SW London), and I'm probably best known for running the Qt blog

particularly writing the QTM blog management program 
(qtm.blogistan.co.uk).  I've used most versions of Ubuntu and have just 
installed Feisty, and I must say it's the first version of Kubuntu I'll 
actually keep using.

Gulp, I have a Dell Dimension in a live work environment. According to 
Belarc I have a Broadcom 440x 10/100 Integrated Controller. Is that the 
kiddie?

You could get a router with an integrated modem.  I can only vouch for
what I've used for ADSL:

Netgear DG834 (wired router)
Netgear DG834GT (wireless router)

There are updated models available, too.  Make sure it's for ADSL and
that it's got an integrated modem.

If you have a hardware synth, load the speakup module suitable for
your synth. If you do not have a hardware synth, you will have to
install the speechd-up package. This should also install

Very much so. The Terminal option in the menu basically opens a window
in in wich a shell is running. Doing Control+Alt+F1 on the other hand
will switch away from the graphical user interface (the X window
system) and bring you to the linux console. The latter is where you
can use speakup.

 Having now got ubuntu 7.4 installed, I am wondering if evolution 
 mail is reccommended for e-mail.
Evolution is what many of us are using with success.  In order to view
messages you will have to enable caret mode from the view menu.  If you
select your inbox from the folder tree and then shift+tab twice you
should be in the list of messages in your inbox.

speakup

Hi, Is there a volume control key for speakup.
I have always used yasr, but saw another post and got it working on ubuntu.
The problem is the sound volume is very low.
I know I can edit the file, but it seems to me speakup has a key to increase 
the volume.

[Ubuntu-BR] Como reinstalar driver da impressora?

Olá!

Tenho uma impressora HP Laserjet 1020, e ela estava apresentando
comportamentos estranhos quando tentava imprimir algo. Por exemplo, pedia
para imprimir a página 43 e ela começava a imprimir tudo, desde o começo.

O driver que eu tou usando eh o foo2zjs que vem padrão no Feisty. Tentei
atualizar o driver, baixando direto da página oficial (
http://foo2zjs.rkkda.com/ ). Tentei antes desinstalar o que vem de padrão,
mas para desinstalá-lo, teria que remover tb um tal de ubuntu-desktop. Creio
que isso não eh mt aconselhável fazer, né?

Então resolvi instalar o driver oficial mesmo assim. Segui os procedimentos
da página e adicionei uma nova impressora. Mas ele não tava identificando a
minha na primeira tela de adicionar uma impressora. Fui pra Frente, mesmo
assim, selecionei o modelo e ao selecionar o driver, tinha 2 opções de
foo2zjs. Escolhi a segunda, que não tinha um sinal de V ao lado (que antes
era verde, e agora tava cinza). Mas não conseguia imprimir nada! O trabalho
ficava na fila de impressão.

Removi a impressora, tentei imprimir com a anterior e nada! Tb só ficava na
fila! Pedi para reinstalar o driver com o aptitude e reiniciei a máquina.
Mas continua sem imprimir nada!! =(

O que eu posso fazer agora?? Além de ter que reinstalar o sistema... =/

Ah! E continua aparecendo Nenhuma impressora detectada ao tentar adicionar
uma e o V ao lado do driver continua cinza, e não verde como era antes.

Poutz!
A MS sempre dá um jeito de entrar nas coisas, mesmo que não estejam ligadas
à ela, portanto, cabe à nós usuários e/ou desenvolvedores de Software Livre
provar às pessoas que vale mais à pena usar Linux (por exemplo) do que ficar
nas mãos de empresas que ditam as regras.

Quanto às crianças que receberão os OLPC, poutz, coitadas dessas crianças
inocentes, que não sabem nem sequer o que é monopólio e estrão sujeitas num
futuro próximo estarem mais ligadas às empresas de software proprietário do
que imaginam. Portanto, o que nos basta a fazer é mostrar à elas (como fiz
com meu primo de 15 anos) que usar Linux é legal e livre! E você nunca terá
que pagar uma licença ou uma multa por isso indevido (com as devidas
observações da GPL).

Obs.: Fico pensando, tanta gente falando comigo em liberdade, pra ser, fazer
e pensar o que quiser, e 99.9% desses utilizam softwares proprietários, a
relação que vejo com isso é que a tecnologia já é, e será uma parte muito
mais presente em nossas vidas daqui poucos anos, portanto, será que essas
pessoas que prezam a liberdade estão realmente livres? ou será que elas não
acham que um software que faz o que quer está tomando parte delas?

  factóide consumista)?
  (2) Em notícias relacionadas, o pacote de Windows SE + Office 2007 por 3
  dólares seria oferecido a governos para distribuição em escolas,
  contanto q os respectivos governos adquirissem os microcomputadores.
  Novamente aquele lance de conquiste-os enquanto ainda são jovens? E o
  governo do Brasil, q me parece q sempre foi um gde apoiador da idéia do
  OLPC, será q vai comprar OLPCs com pacotes MS de USD3,00 para distribuir
  às escolas???
  (3) O Bill Gates criticava duramente o projeto. Será q agora ele vai
  começar a dizer q o lance é uma boa idéia, já q roda a plataforma dos
  olhos dele?
  (4) Imaginem q a versão Windows do OLPC conserve as capacidades de rede
  mesh. Agora imaginem um vírus ou worm para Windows se disseminando em
  uma rede assim. ;-)
  (5) Será esse o exemplo perfeito do q acontece qdo a adoção de Software
  Livre é movida apenas por fatores econômicos? Ou seja, basta o pessoal
  do Software Proprietário entrar com um subsídio q tudo muda?

 assim, selecionei o modelo e ao selecionar o driver, tinha 2 opções de
 foo2zjs. Escolhi a segunda, que não tinha um sinal de V ao lado (que antes
 era verde, e agora tava cinza). Mas não conseguia imprimir nada! O
 trabalho
 ficava na fila de impressão.

 Removi a impressora, tentei imprimir com a anterior e nada! Tb só ficava
 na
 fila! Pedi para reinstalar o driver com o aptitude e reiniciei a máquina.
 Mas continua sem imprimir nada!! =(

 O que eu posso fazer agora?? Além de ter que reinstalar o sistema... =/

 Ah! E continua aparecendo Nenhuma impressora detectada ao tentar
 adicionar
 uma e o V ao lado do driver continua cinza, e não verde como era antes.

mais presente em nossas vidas daqui poucos anos, portanto, será que essas
pessoas que prezam a liberdade estão realmente livres? ou será que elas
não
acham que um software que faz o que quer está tomando parte delas?

(1) A interface Sugar não era especialmete desenhada para fins
educacionais? Como isso fica com a interface Windows? Ou o OLPC vai
realmente virar um laptop popular (algo q eu sempre escutei q era a
abordagem errada, já q o propósito do projeto era educacional, não um
factóide consumista)?
(2) Em notícias relacionadas, o pacote de Windows SE + Office 2007 por
3
dólares seria oferecido a governos para distribuição em escolas,
contanto q os respectivos governos adquirissem os microcomputadores.
Novamente aquele lance de conquiste-os enquanto ainda são jovens? E
o
governo do Brasil, q me parece q sempre foi um gde apoiador da idéia
do
OLPC, será q vai comprar OLPCs com pacotes MS de USD3,00 para
distribuir
às escolas???
(3) O Bill Gates criticava duramente o projeto. Será q agora ele vai
começar a dizer q o lance é uma boa idéia, já q roda a plataforma dos
olhos dele?
(4) Imaginem q a versão Windows do OLPC conserve as capacidades de
rede
mesh. Agora imaginem um vírus ou worm para Windows se disseminando em
uma rede assim. ;-)
(5) Será esse o exemplo perfeito do q acontece qdo a adoção de
Software
Livre é movida apenas por fatores econômicos? Ou seja, basta o pessoal
do Software Proprietário entrar com um subsídio q tudo muda?

ai tive que parar de ler, e me veio uma dúvida na hora
por acaso existe algum programa que atua como um marcador de livros virtual???
pois eu tenho que decorar a página que parei, e as vezes como demoro
pra voltar a ler acabo me esquecendo

[Ubuntu-BR] crescimento estranho do espaço no hd

Neu hd está sofrendo um aumento misterioso de espaço de uso...algo na
taxa de 0,1 MB por hora!

Já chequei o var/log e lá tudo está normal!  Qual outro diretório

É mais fácil usar um desses programas de anotações, como o tomboy.
Clica com o botão direito em uma das barras do gnome, vai em adicionar
ao painel... e clica duas vezes em tomboy notas

Se você estava lendo no evince, ele automaticamente reabrirá o arquivo 
na mesma página em que você estava.

Se você estava usando o Adobe Reader, ele tem uma função bookmark para 
essa finalidade.

Se você estava usando outro leitor, não sei.

 Sobre o cedega, a transgaming cobra uma mensalidade de acesso ao seu
site (5 dólares por mês, mínimo de 3 meses) onde vc pode baixar a última
versão do cedega. Se vc parar de pagar a mensalidade, vc para de receber
atualizações (além de suporte no fórum e outras coisas) mas as versões q
vc possui continuam a funcionar normalmente.
Infelizmente, a única forma de pagar em reais pelo Cedega é comprando o
Mandriva discovery/PowerPack, no qual ele é incluso (o discovery é a
versão mais barata e custa R$79,90 e o PowerPack R$189,90, no Mandriva
Store Brasil).
  Existe também a possibilidade de baixar uma versão instável do cedega
gratuitamente em [1] (no CVS da trangaming), que não possui a interface
Point2Play e nem o sistema de copy protection, além de outras coisas.
  Eu já tive a oportunidade de testar o Cedega, porém tratava-se de uma
versão NÃO LEGALIZADA (é, pirata mesmo, dessas q circulam em sites de
torrents) e realmente é um software excelente. No entanto, pagar em
doletas (mesmo sendo até barato o q a trangaming cobra) não rola pra mim
=p.
  Se por acaso houver várias pessoas aqui na comunidade que, assim como
eu, gostariam de ter acesso ao Cedega, acho q seria interessante
iniciarmos alguma campanha/petição/o que for para que o Cedega também

Sugiro que você comece analisando seu tráfego de rede. Para ver se 
existe algum download em andamento. Existem duas maneiras de ver isso, 
mas a melhor é através do applet Monitor de Rede (se vc usa o Gnome). 
Caso haja algum tráfego de rede, é possível que você tenha começado um 
download sem perceber --- ou então é possível que esse download tenha 
sido iniciado, em segundo plano, por um applet malicioso da internet. Se 
você já fechou o navegador, verifique no Monitor do Sistema se ele 
continua sendo executado. Se estiver, mate-o e veja se o tráfego de rede 
pára.

Se não houver tráfego de rede, analise os processos que estão rodando e 
veja se há algum suspeito. Em último caso, instale o chkrootkit ou o 
rkhunter e verifique se seu computador não foi tomado por um rootkit.

Vale lembrar que estas duas hipóteses são bastante remotas, mas devido 
ao risco envolvido recomendei que vc começasse por elas.

Se você se certificar de que NÃO É nada disso, então vamos analisar 
algumas outras fontes de consumo de espaço:

* TeX = Você usa TeX? Se usa (TeX, LyX, TeXmacs, TeXmaker, Winefish, 
KLaT, etc.), saiba que cada vez que você vê um arquivo DVI o TeX compila 
as fontes em disco (arquivos .pk).
* Cache de internet = Dependendo de como você configurou o seu navegador 
de internet ele pode estar guardando imagens, planos de fundos, html, 
scripts, css, Flash, etc. em algum lugar do disco rígido (seu /home, no 
caso do mozilla e semelhantes)
* Journal = sistemas de arquivo com journalling (JFS, XFS, ext3, reiser) 
geram índice de disco e ocupam certo espaço.

Caso eu tenha entendido mal e o ESPAÇO DISPONÍVEL esteja aumentando, não 
tenho a mínima idéia.

Eu sei que vc já falou, mas só pra garantir: não seria problema do CUPS? O
cups encheu meu HD (100% de uso!!) ontem, com um arquivo de log no
/var/log/cups.

Eu utilizo o CrossOver, é quase para o mesmo fim.
O preço é algo em torno de 35dolares... Acho que o Cedega deve girar em 
torno do mesmo preço.

Mas procurando na internet, achei isto:

Cedega is sold by subscription, but your subscription does not have to 
be current in order to use the software. New customers are required to 
buy a 3-month subscription, after which they can choose to let it lapse 
and pay for updates when they choose. The cost is U.S. $5 per month.

Pelo o que eu entendi, são 15dólares (pela assinatura básica de 3 
meses), e depois você paga as atualizações...

[Ubuntu-BR] /dev/hdax nao existe, como assim?

Galera, eu to usando Ubuntu 7.04 e fui instalar aki o Gfxboot, q personaliza
o Grub e tal, ate ai blz, fiz tudo certinho mas na hora de gravar o grub na
MBR eu preciso dar o comando:

grub-install /dev/hdaX

no meu caso seria grub-install /dev/hda6 pois é onde o Ubuntu estao
instalado, porem quando eu dou esse comando aparece:

/dev/hda6: Not found or not a block device.

ja tentei tb com:

grub-install /dev/hda

mas da a mesma coisa...

isso pq a pasta /dev/hda6 nao existe, mas como assim nao existe, meu ubuntu
esta instalado la, mas se eu for na pasta /dev nao tem nenhuma das minhas
partiçoes la, porem o /etc/fstab ta escrito la /dev/hda6 sendo assim como
nao existe o diretorio? como eu faço agora pra gravar o grub na MBR, preciso
disso urgente pq se eu reininciar o PC nao vou conseguir mais entrar no
linux...

Se fosse windows eu diria que é vírus, mas como não é o caso, eu
acredito mais que seja algum programa rodando em background, talvez até
um programa p2p fazendo download. ou sei lá.
Se você tem o freenet (programa p2p que encripta os dados para não haver
censura), enquanto ele estiver rodando vai ficar baixando coisas mesmo
(até ter um limite configurado pela interface web), para fazer upload
para outros usuários, mesmo que vc não tenha baixado nada, e não tenha
aberto nenhuma janela de um software relacionado ao freenet ou esteja
visitando um freesite. É possível que outros clientes p2p tb se
comportem dessa maneira, ou seja, fiquem baixando coisas em background.
Pode ser outras coisas também. aquele programa de pesquisa do estilo msn
search/google desktop, que fica indexando arquivos... Verifique os
limites de cache do navegador também para ver se você não deixou muito
alto (aí vai salvando tudo que tu viu na internet...)

tente monitorar a rede, sem nenhum programa aberto relacionado a
internet e ver se está transmitindo dados.

mais uma dica... Uma idéia, se nãda funcionar... dê o comando:
sudo du -hs /*  tamanhodaspastas
(obs: não tenho certeza, mas acho que esse arquivo tamanhodaspastas vai
ficar com o root como dono e vai precisar de sudo para ler ele tb. outra
nota, esse arquivo vai ser salvo na pasta que você executou o comando)
Deixe o computador ligado sem fazer muita coisa até o tamanho
aumentar... Daí de novamente
sudo du -hs /*
e compare com o tamanho das pastas que está no arquivo tamanhodaspastas
(sudo more tamanhodaspastas). Aí você vai poder notar qual pasta
aumentou de tamanho.  aí vc vai repetindo o procedimento para as
supbastas, até chegar no arquivo que está aumentando de tamanho =)

Aliás, na verdade até acho que existe um jeito mais fácil de fazer isso,
com o comando find procurando arquivos novos ou modificados
recentemente, só que teria que dar uma lida no help :P
