If you want a minimal Ubuntu based you can start with the mini.iso
file provided by Ubuntu and work your way up to install stuff that you
need. If you like lightweight Desktop Environments I would highly
recommend awesome3. I currently use this on my Ubuntu system. I'm
addicted to apt-get so I like the option of having it around for easy
package installs.

The cons are that it will require a fair bit of package downloading as
well as customization of the awesome rc.lua file for your needs. A
tiling window manager is the best if you use a number of terminals
etc. I try and use either the gmail web interface or mutt for email,
irssi for irc and pidgin for other IM networks (you could rid yourself
of pidgin too if you used bitlbee to run an IM gateway, allowing you
to connect via irssi).

All the best on your minimalist quest! :)

Also which programs are included in the default install not counting

My requirement is minimalist +rolling. So a full rolling distro makes sense.
I had thought about the minimal ubuntu route, but obviously it is not
rolling.

awesome 3 - never heard about it frankly, so reading up on it now. However i
am not a poweruser or techie.

*From its site: awesome* is a highly configurable, next generation framework
window manager for X. It is very fast, extensible and licensed under the GNU
GPLv2 license http://www.gnu.org/licenses/old-licenses/gpl-2.0.html. It is
primarly targeted at power users, developers and any people dealing with
every day computing tasks and who want to have fine-grained control on
theirs graphical environment.
AntiX also uses Apt-get and Synaptic, and a lot of Debian repos as it is
based on Mepis and debian.

I am a as-little-of-terminal-as-possible kind of guy.

Will try it for a while. Also it uses delta packages which i have been
hoping Ubuntu starts. Opensuse and Fedora have been using it for ages.

It is a matter of personal preference. Rolling distros have advantage,
that the users keep getting the latest software versions in their
updates as soon as they are released instead of waiting for six months
or so when their distro gets upgraded. On the other hand, non-rolling
distros enjoy more stability (though this is only my speculation as I
have not used any rolling distro yet) as they don't provide drastically
updated software packages in their stable archive.

Guess I made it understandable.

[ubuntu-in] Events planned to celebrate Software Freedom Day in Bangalore from 15th to 17th Sept

2010-09-11 Thread VIGNESH PRABHU
Hi friends,

Software Freedom Law Centre, New Delhi(SFLC-ND) and Free Software
Movement-Karnataka (FSMK) are celebrating Software Freedom Day, by
organizing Talks and events by one of the mavericks of the Knowledge Freedom
campaigns and an affiliate of SFLC-ND - Prof.Eben Moglen,Founder,
Director-Counsel and Chairman of Software Freedom Law Center.

In this visit to Bangalore, Prof.Eben Moglen will be participating in three
separate events organized by FSMK.

*1. Inaugural Lecture of Free Software certificate course at St.Joseph's
College,Bangalore on the 15th September 4 p.m.*

St.Joseph's College, Bangalore has incorporated 120 hours of free software
sessions to be handled by FSMK and other like-minded Free Software
Enthusiasts. The course syllabus will be put up on website of FSMK very
soon. The idea is to to empower students to become productive
self-supporting citizens of the free software community. Its an honour to
have professor Eben deliver the first lecture of the course.

*2. Prof.Eben at Ambedkar Community Computing Center (AC3) on the 16th
September., evening*

Before two years, RMS and Prof.Eben visited AC3 with only a few students who
were being taught computers using Free Software. Today, these handful of
young free software activists from the community are running three other
Community Computing Centers completely on their own. Prof.Eben will visit
AC3 for a community discussion, where the members of these centers will
initiate a discussion on the activities so far, the ups and downs and the
way forward. There will also be a small cultural event organized by AC3
students.

*3. Interaction with Prof.Eben Moglen on the Freedom in the Cloud at Indian
Institute of Science, on 17th September , 3p.m – 5 p.m, faculty hall IISc.
*

Speaker: Prof. Eben Moglen
Professor of Law and Legal History at Columbia University Founder,
Director-Counsel Chairman of Software Freedom Law Center

Time: Fri. Sep 17 2010 3pm-5pm

Venue: Faculty Hall, IISc

Title of Talk: Freedom in the Cloud: Software Freedom, Privacy and Security
for Web 2.0 and Cloud Computing

Abstract:
Everyone wants a piece of you these days: Google, Facebook, Flickr, Apple,
ATT, Bing. They'll give you free e-mail, free photo storage, free web
hosting, even a free date. They just want to listen in. And you can't wait
to let them. They'll store your stuff, they'll organize your photos, they'll
keep track of your appointments, as long as they can watch. It all goes into
the Cloud.

How we got here is quite a scary story. But nowhere near as scary as getting
out again. This talk will discuss how much worse things have become since
the pre-cloud era and explain what you can do to reclaim your freedom in the
era of Web 2.0.

I cordially invite you all to come and celebrate software freedom day along
with us during these events.

My experience is the same. I own an IBM Thinkpad laptop and
unfortunately had to convert from single boot Linux to dual boot for
university purposes. Took me 2 days to completely set up the machine
after taking recourse to a friend's machine to download drivers because
I foolishly expected Windows to detect hardware (this was/is WinXP) My
Net connection is through wireless and Windows couldn't detect the
network interfaces, not even wired, let alone wireless. On top of that,
it couldn't find drivers for a bunch of other devices (sound anyone?)
and every time I boot, it wants to go on the Net to find them. MS
probably has some magic technology that allows Win to access the Net
without having drivers for the network interfaces. X-(

After finally setting up the stuff, I installed all the updates from MS
and there is no space left for any user apps, never mind the data (I
only gave it 5GB) Even Ubuntu installs in less than 5GB with full setup
of packages plus Skype, restricted-extras, GIMP, Audacity, Xchat,
build-essential, etc.

Regards
Easwar

PS: By even Ubuntu I mean that there are other distros which will use up
less disk space than that.

Just wondering aloud then, what is there in 18.7GB of a standard W7 install
that i saw recently. If it does not come with atleast drivers for the basic
video and audio and input devices, then wonder what is there.

I used to have nvidia display drivers both when i had XP and also when i
used Ubuntu 9. The drivers itself occupied 180MB or more in both OS. And now
i have this Linux distro called Austrumi that is 138MB, and is a complete
desktop OS WITH nvidia drivers. Nero occupies 200MB, imgBURN does the same
job and better with 2.5MB. Wonder what do they fill the software with to
cause that bloat.

I have always believed in the KISS, minimalism, Worse is Better principles
as can be gleaned from the posts in the past. Software Bloat not welcome
atleast in my case.

Salut,

ele...@hippobuntu:~$ cat /usr/local/bin/fix_locale.sh
#!/bin/bash

LOCALE_FILE='/usr/share/i18n/locales/fr_CA'
if [ -f $LOCALE_FILE ] ; then
 sudo sed -i 's/^first_weekday.*/first_weekday 1/' $LOCALE_FILE
 sudo locale-gen
 killall gnome-panel
fi

http://developer.android.com/guide/developing/tools/emulator.html

version 2.2:
http://code.google.com/p/android-x86/downloads/detail?name=froyo-vm-20100812.isocan=2q=*.iso

Ah oui j'ai pris qqs captures d'écran:

I even tried ensuring all my account info was up to date and current,

[ubuntu-uk] Ubuntu Direction

2010-09-11 Thread Daniel Case
Hi All,

I have just tried the 10.10 Beta and here are my thoughts.

Is it just me, or does anyone else think Ubuntu is losing its direction from
its initial philosophy? I have seen it happen all too often with
company-owned software, first it will be open source, then it will have some
closed source stuff (which Ubuntu now gives you option to install at the
install screen - despite it being closed source)

There is also now a paid software section in the Ubuntu Software Center and
finally...a tiny one, but the one that really annoyed me, the fact that
ctrl+alt+d no longer takes you the desktop as it does in every other
distribution and did since Ubuntu was first thought of, it is now
WINDOWS+d.

Just my 2p (since its UK ;))

Okay to be fair I haven't had chance to try the 10.10 Beta yet, when I
free up some space I'm going to to give it a try.

Is it just me, or does anyone else think Ubuntu is losing its direction
from its initial philosophy? I have seen it happen all too often with
company-owned software, first it will be open source, then it will have
some closed source stuff (which Ubuntu now gives you option to install

Yes and no. I'd be the first to admit I wasn't keen on the UI changes
in Ubuntu 10.04 although now I'm used to the changes. AFAIK Ubuntu has
always offered some closed source stuff (closed source drivers and
things like the option of adding Flash, Adobe Reader etc). I guess the
idea of adding closed source software to the Ubuntu Software Centre is
so that Canonical can maybe take commission on sales of software. IIRC
for a while they've had the option to add commercial software, possibly
not so easily but it's been available (things like video codecs,
CrossOver Office maybe). More and more people are getting used to 'App
Stores', possibly because of the sheer popularity of the iPhone/iPod
Touch/iPad.

Personally I think if adding a Software Centre brings in more users then
that has to be a good thing. Plus we're not being forced to buy
commercial software or even download free proprietary software if we
don't want to. If we do however want to add non-free components (Flash,
codecs etc) then it's being made easier (especially for new users who
possibly come to expect this sort of thing when they're coming from
Windows/Mac).

Thinking back a few years ago, one of the complaints that I heard from
some Windows users (one complaint I had myself when I first started
using Linux was that I couldn't download a setup program). Some people
kind of expect this too and I think maybe the simplicity of the Software
Centre is a good thing until they learn that they can add repositories
and install deb (or even rpm packages with Alien and .tar.gz packages).

There is also now a paid software section in the Ubuntu Software Center
and finally...a tiny one, but the one that really annoyed me, the fact
that ctrl+alt+d no longer takes you the desktop as it does in every
other distribution and did since Ubuntu was first thought of, it is now

You can always change it back. Personally I change it to Windows + D as
I use Windows at work and it's just habit for me. Same goes for Windows
+ L. Maybe they'll change the Ctrl + Alt + L shortcut to Windows + L
before the final release.

Just my 2p (since its UK ;))

That's fair enough. At the end of the day we do have plenty of choice
on distros, themes, desktop environments. In a way I think we're lucky
that we're not stuck with one thing, and I also think we're really lucky
that we don't have to purchase a specific version for specific features
(as with Windows where you get Windows Media Center on Windows 7 Home
Premium and Ultimate or the ability to add to domains on Windows 7
Professional or Ultimate).

 Daniel,
I am afraid I dont share your thought that Ubuntu is loosing direction, in
fact I feel that Ubuntu and Canonical have not only kept in line with that
philosophy they have also been responsible for a lot more people getting
interested in open source and widening its appeal. I am more concerned
about other open source communities and companies that seem to have
something against them.

You mention that you can now install closed source software as part of the
install, I have not seen any indication that there is additional software in
the installation that is not already part of the Ubuntu repositories. Can
you elaborate?

Most of my laptops dont have a windows key and neither do many of the apple
computers running Ubuntu - I hope that your comment was more venting than a
real argument as I could understand that better. I hope you are not
inferring that everyone running Ubuntu has to buy a windows computer first
:-)

Thank you.

[ubuntu-uk] UFW and IPv6 Tunnelling

2010-09-11 Thread Jon Farmer
Hi

I have setup a machine to tunnel IPv6 traffic over IPv4 using
Freenet6. I am also using radvd to auto config the other IPv6 capable
clients with IP's from the assigned /56 .With IPv6 forwarding I can
use IPv6 from any machine on the LAN through the tunnel.

However when I turn on ufw on the tunnelled machine I lose the IPv6
routing. I have enable IPv6 in ufw.

Any idea's what I need to do to get the machine to forward the IPv6
requests from the LAN?

My google-fu has failed me on this one.

Any help appreciated.

Re: [ubuntu-uk] Ubuntu Direction

2010-09-11 Thread Anton Piatek
I generally disagree with the original comments - Ubuntu has always
shipped non-free software (flash, sun java, ...) and this is mostly
for the user's benefit in that these applications are very much
desired. If I want a pure, free environment I use Debian.

The software centre is not new - I recall partner repositories as far
back as at least jaunty, but probably earlier, and I think these are
not only a good idea but important for the long-term success of Ubuntu
- Being able to provide things like IBM's free-to-use DB2 and WAS-CE
are important for making the platform more successful and being able
to get support from other software suppliers.

Of course not everyone will agree with me, and that is fine.

Hi Ana,

I hope you're enjoying using Kubuntu despite these issues. Let's hope
we can help you get them sorted out.

3 problems to solve:

1) I have the Kubuntu 10.04 and when I first installed on my acer
travelmate 6293 the internet wireless worked really well ( I didn't
test the wired). But now the orange light went off and I can't get it
back.

There are a couple of things that might have happened here:

  1. Your wireless card might be turned off by a hardware/firmware
switch - on some laptops it's a little mechanical switch or button
around the outside of the machine somewhere; on others it's an Fn
 key combination.
  2. Your networking might have been turned off in software. I'm not
sure what it is in KDE (which is the GUI in Kubuntu), but in GNOME
(the GUI in standard Ubuntu), you can right click the network
settings applet and turn it on and off (both wireless
specifically, and networking in general). Someone else on the
list might be able to advise on the exact method for Kubuntu.
  3. There might be some bug with your wireless card. My Dell Latitude
D830 is affected by a bug whereby if it is booted with the
hardware switch on, it turns off at a certain point in bootup and
won't turn back on. If i boot with the hardware switch off, it
turns on successfully after the driver has loaded. If your laptop
has an Intel wireless card, it may be affected by this or a
 similar bug.

Personally, i don't find that a reboot fixes much with wireless stuff on
Linux, so i would use that as a last resort. In general, you should
only need to reboot Linux when there's a kernel update, or certain other
core software (update manager will tell you when it's necessary).

2) Also the printer (cannon LBP 3200) doesn't work. I have windows
vista as well as Kubuntu in my computer. All works ok with vista.

A quick Google search indicates that the printer has driver support for
CUPS (http://software.canon-europe.com/products/0010044.asp), but the
OpenPrinting database has nothing
(http://www.openprinting.org/printers), so some fiddling might be in
order to get it working.

3) I have downloaded a piano tuning program Tunelab and it doesn't
execute the file tunelab.exe

To execute Windows programs on Linux, you need to install a product
called wine - you can do this through the normal software installer
(i'm not exactly sure where it is on Kubuntu, but i'm sure it will be
pretty obvious). After you install wine, .exe programs should start
using that when you open them in the file manager. Some Windows
software works really well in wine - other software doesn't work at
all. If the latter is true in this case, you should find some
alternatives if you search in the software installer.

Tech support

2010-09-11 Thread Ian Fleming
I notice tech support seems to be encouraged in this mailing list. I can
appreciate that there will be Australian specific issues from time to
time, but seriously there are other channels for this [1] as well a
official Ubuntu IRC rooms, Launchpad Questions, Ubuntu forums and so
on..

Now instead of bickering over Linux reboots why don't we reboot the loco
and get some proper communications/work in this list.

|
acl horario time MTWHF 8:30-17:30
acl sitiospermitidos url_regex /etc/squid/permitidos
acl usuariosbloqueados src /etc/squid/bloqueados
acl administradores src /etc/squid/admin
acl online_videos rep_mime_type -i video/x-flv
||acl bloquedos urlpath_regex -i \.exe$ \.mp3$ \.wav$ \.zip$ \.pps$
\.rar$ \.mp$ \.mpg$ \.wma$ \.mov$|

|.
..
..
.
||http_access deny bloqueados|
|http_access deny usuariosbloqueados !sitiospermitidos horario
http_reply_access deny online_videos !administradores
..
..
..

|

Me explico mejor

consultas online.

Re: [Ubuntu-BR] [DICA] Abrir Terminal Aqui...

2010-09-11 Thread Anderson Queiroz

o botão direito do mouse e seleciona o item do menu popup: Abrir

Re: [ubuntu-marketing] How do we encourage game developers to work with Linux?

2010-09-11 Thread Martin Owens
First your arguing that FOSS isn't commercial (which is very wrong),
then your arguing that we have a social problem with expecting peer
reviewed code.

And finally you wrap it up with a market size argument.

So which is it? Is Ubuntu not a big enough target or are we just jerks
to poor developers and want to make sure they don't earn any money?

Let's all repeat this together: FOSS and Ubuntu are commercial, they
earn money and make livings.

Re: [ubuntu-marketing] How do we encourage game developers to work with Linux?

2010-09-11 Thread Dylan McCall
First, start small. The AAA developers are not interested. They have
turn-around times measured in years for _becoming_ interested and they don't
see a valuable market yet. We don't need them anyway.
What we want is to encourage And To Help casual, independent game
developers. Talented people / small groups that agree what they do is fun
and like to do cool things.

And what _they_ tend to like is clarity. I see the success of dedicated game
development languages like Blitz3D, and the very frequent use of packaged
engines like Ogre3D, as examples to this end.

These developers like APIs and development tools, of course. Good ones.
Clear ones. Ones that say use this; don't worry, we won't take it from you
in a year. I'm not talking complex do-everything languages (like the horror
that is Darkbasic), either. There should be nothing that somebody may not
use in a given project.

They need packaging tools, but we shouldn't jam these down their throats at
the start because game development is all about rapid prototyping. Add in
Makefiles and boilerplate wrangling and you have KILLED whatever creative
spark there was ten minutes ago. A draw of something like Blitz is you can
instantly have something working (and building anywhere) without any
fussing.
As for when fussing becones necessary, BuilDj or Gyp are perfect choices
here because they're nice enough to use that you don't need to start early.
(And they're strict enough that a dedicated IDE could generate their
respective build description files magically).

Quickly is a step in that direction because it gives the user a bunch of
tools and says these are the ones you're using.
We need that, but focused on high performance stuff that doesn't use (or
want to use) GTK, or anything particularly high level.
Come to think of it, the modding community is a thriving one, too, building
off fully formed games like HalfLife 2 (usually with total conversions like
Eternal Silence and Project Reality). It could be interesting to explore
what makes them tick, and see how a Quickly For Games could interest them.

One other thing is Ubuntu needs to stop being so great to develop mundane
software for. I was GOING to make a game. A really cool one. Then Python
and apt-get source ruined me ;)

Re: [Ubuntu-be] Linux courses for beginners

2010-09-11 Thread jean7491

Hallo Michaël,

About looking for Dutch course Linux (Ubuntu) for beginners :

Hi to all, especially to beginners (with Ubuntu) in and around Ostend,

There are a lot of Linux courses available in evening schools,
Vormingplus or Centrum's voor

As example,
the course Linux1 (over Ubuntu, 4 months, Thursday evening) started at
the evening school Ostend :

http://www.evaluatiesvandeavondschool.be/davoRooster/index.php?id=1.2.4.17.0.1283626760.179634

Inhoud Linux deel 1

* beheer van gebruikers en groepen
* toekennen van rechten op bestanden en mappen
* beheer van processen
* installeren van software (via cd/dvd, internet en vanaf
broncode)
* printers installeren en configureren
* inleiding tot multimedia met Linux

Linux deel 2 in Jan. 2011.

It is not too late to start !

 http://www.oovoo.com

 http://www.videoport.ru

2. openmeetings

[Bug 634839] Re: package postfix 2.7.0-1 failed to install/upgrade: subprocess installed post-installation script returned error exit status 1

2010-09-11 Thread Clint Byrum
Hi firebird, thanks for taking the time to report this as a bug and help
us make Ubuntu better.

This one is very confusing. Since all of this runs as root, there should
have been no permission denied on file access. Did you have /etc mounted
readonly, or maybe some hardening on the system, like immutable files on
/etc, that might have layered on top of the normal permissions?

Marking Incomplete, firebird, please respond to the above at your
earliest convenience so I can reopen the bug. Thanks!

2010-09-11 Thread Scott Kitterman
This is not a bug in the clamav package. Some other package has locked
the user related files. See Bug #432964 as it has an extended
discussion on the topic. You can remove the lock files as described
there to resolve the immediate issue, but it would be best to try and
find the original source of these stale locks.

Would you be able to run the same test using Ubuntu 10.10 beta, to see
if the bug still persists ? You should be able to use a LiveCD to test.

[Bug 634085] Re: package vsftpd 2.2.2-3ubuntu6 failed to install/upgrade: subprocess installed post-installation script returned error exit status 3

2010-09-11 Thread Clint Byrum
Hello odonata, thanks so much for taking the time to file this bug
report and help us make Ubuntu better!

Can you, by any chance, post your script?

I tried this on Lucid by doing

apt-get install zeroc-ice33

which completed fine, then doing

apt-get install vsftpd

which did not try to remove zeroc-ice33. There's also nothing obvious to
me that would makes apt want to remove zeroc-ice33 or its dependencies.

Marking incomplete, need a reproducible test case.

  *dpkg --get-selections listedespaquets.txt

  *sudo dpkg --set-selections listedespaquets.txt
  *sudo apt-get dselect-upgrade
  *sudo apt-get dist-upgrade
  *sudo apt-get upgrade

Bonne continuation
