[Bug 301480] Re: can't connect to PAN NAP

2008-12-05 Thread John Brook
I can confirm this problem on my setup too.

This is a severe regression from hardy. The excellent functionality
provided by pand et al was fairly simple to set up and use. And it
worked. The new dbus configuration method obscures everything unless you
know the dbus system and command line options. And it doesn't work.

The new system is a big step backwards in usability, and the compat
package doesn't work, so the previous functionality is broken.

Please can we have a nice config file to set system defaults for NAP GN
and PANU. I would like my system to boot up to providing a NAP service
without my having to enable it manually.

A graphical interface in GNOME to do the same would be the icing on the
cake.

[Bug 264943] Re: gvfsd-smb crashed with SIGSEGV in strlen()

2008-12-05 Thread ^_Pepe_^
I'm terribly sorry to ask some information about patch.

1st. Could you publish a mini (really mini) HowTo? Any to uninstall first???
2nd. Could you please what could kind side-effects are expected to appear, and
how to reverse samba situation to actual as is. I guess that reinstalling
smbclient and smbfs will be enough.

I'm very greateful for your help.

[Bug 252094] Re: Poor graphics performance and rendering errors on Intel GM965 system, Ubuntu 8.10

2008-12-05 Thread ART
JoseLVG: I suppose that kernelcheck use well-known distro kernel
templates.

Biji: xorg edgers provides also 64 bit packages.

Instead of building the kernel it is possible to install kernel from
jaunty and also works.

[Bug 252094] Re: Poor graphics performance and rendering errors on Intel GM965 system, Ubuntu 8.10

2008-12-05 Thread Daniel Bonniot de Ruisselet
I also managed to fix the performance (from 600fps to 1000fps with a
GM45) as well as frequent crashes (consistently with etracer for
instance). This is on an intrepid amd64 system.

1. install a 2.6.28 kernel (I got the current one from jaunty).
2. from the xorg-edgers ppa, install the mesa an required packages, and
xserver-xorg-video-intel 2:2.4.97.0+git20081129
3. restart X (before restarting it works, but with warning that GEM is not
used, and no performance improvement)

I didn't need to compile a custom kernel or kernel modules.

I got the error with X not restarting (same as portis above) when I was
using xserver-xorg-video-intel 2.5.1 from jaunty. Using the 2.4.97
version from xorg-edgers fixed that.

[Bug 303458] Re: segfault in pam_smbpass.so

2008-12-05 Thread zedtux
So, I have back in rescue mode and do all possible updates.

After that, I did an ls /var/lib/samba and saw many files.
So did the apt-get remove --purge libpam-sbmpass and then, execute again an ls
/var/lib/samba.
Files still there !

So, I did a rm -rf /var/lib/samba, and then apt-get install libpam-
sbmpass.

Next step, I continue boot process and try, in a terminal to do sudo
apt-get update and again segmentation fault !

[Bug 305525] [NEW] Front mic not working with snd-hda-intel on Dell Vostro 1710

2008-12-05 Thread Jeremy Jongsma
Public bug reported:

My Dell Vostro 1710 has two mic inputs - a normal mic jack and a built-

[Bug 247475] Re: Backlight brightness level reverts to default after lid re-open

2008-12-05 Thread Zorael
Reconfirming, happens for me in Ubuntu 8.10, Kubuntu 8.10, Mint 8.10 and
Xubuntu 8.10. It also occurs when I use (Ctrl+)Alt+Fx to switch to tty.
Switching *between* ttys works fine, but switching to and from tty -
from and to X - reverts brightness to 100% which seems to be my default.
Ergo, as soon as X blanks the screen (changes mode?), it's reset.

This happens with the intel, nv and proprietary nvidia drivers, tested
on two different laptops (Advent 4211, Acer Aspire 9815).

[Bug 51866] Re: GRUB splash images do not work.

2008-12-05 Thread Shanta Schelfhout
I did some further testing and update-grub seems the culprit.
It looks for a splashimage in /boot/grub, which needs to be named splash.xpm.gz.
Although it writes it to menu.lst it does this in the wrong format so the image
is not shown.

Entry in menu.lst after running KDEGrubEditor:
splashimage=(hd0,2)/boot/grub/splash.xpm.gz

Entry in menu.lst after running update-grub:
splashimage=c5c42e26-e84a-4c1e-88b9-144ef7043362/boot/grub/splash.xpm.gz

After manually editing the update-grub entry to
splashimage=(hd0,2)/boot/grub/splash.xpm.gz the image is shown.

So nothing wrong with the package grub-images, so changed package to
grub.

2008-12-05 Thread drumanart
Thanks for resolving my bug.
I have to repair still tree bugs. The first problem is after upgrading
(what was an act of 2 weeks time with a lot of reading of the ubuntu
forum) my computer hangs on a black screen with a blinking curser when I
tray to shut down the machine. I could'nt resolve the problem in reading
the treads of the forum.
The second bug is my wireless connection (I get my internet connection
only with wireless) dosen't connect automatically. I a terminal I have
to type allways sudo dhclient to connect. But since the upgrade to Hardy
0.10 (I have the ubuntu studio) this doesn't work allways. Sometimes I
have to restart the machine to make my internet connection work.
The third and probably most difficult bug is an input-output error on
sda1. If I try to download from the internet a bigger file I can be
shure the system hangs. To fix the problem I changed the motherboard
and the hard drive without succsess.
I use an ASUS P5B-MX/WIFI-AP with 4G ram.
Thanks Martin

[Bug 284377] Re: No NET with 2.6.27: No buffer space available

2008-12-05 Thread Dustin Kirkland
I can confirm this issue too, but it's unique to the access point.

I have connected successfully to dozens of other access points, but I'm
trying to connect to an SMC Barricade SMC7004AWBR. The wireless
connection is established, and persists (802.11b, no encryption). But I
cannot draw an ipaddress.

If I try to manually configure the ip address via `ifconfig ath0 192.168.2.50`,
I get this error message:
SIOCSIFADDR: No buffer space available

One thing I noticed... This access point only supports 11mbps 802.11b.
The iwconfig output, though, thinks it's connected to 802.11g. Could
this be part of the problem?

[Bug 270726] Re: [upstream] openoffice.org PDF conversion puts lines into background

2008-12-05 Thread Adrian Busolini
It seems the problem really resides in Poppler - the free library used
by Evince and many others to read PDFs. Specifically, it appears to be
in the Cairo backend of Poppler, as people seem to be reporting other
backends render the PDFs correctly.

Links to the main bug reports citing gradient issues (filed under
Poppler, which is overseen by FreeDesktop.org):

https://bugs.freedesktop.org/show_bug.cgi?id=10942
https://bugs.freedesktop.org/show_bug.cgi?id=14160
https://bugs.freedesktop.org/show_bug.cgi?id=15501
https://bugs.freedesktop.org/show_bug.cgi?id=16235

KPDF and XPDF suffer from the same problems as Evince - presumably using
the same poppler libraries with Cairo. Interestingly, gv entirely failed
to load my test PDF documents.

So I don't know if a problem also exists within OO - I haven't done the
final test of using some pieces of rubbish such as Microshi*
Office/Adobe Acrobat to create some PDFs with gradients and test loading
them with the poppler libraries.

Re: [Bug 290885] Re: SRU: Backport of Boot Degraded RAID functionality from Intrepid to Hardy

2008-12-05 Thread Dustin Kirkland
Martin-

I consciously did *not* edit the postinst to do the grub install, in
order to keep with the rule of least surprise.

I agree with Steve's comments that it would be quite nice if this
could be done automatically, but I don't think messing with every RAID
user's MBR is something that we should/could do automatically.

In any other circumstance, upgrading the grub package installs new
binaries to the system, but it doesn't reinstall the bootloader.

One thing I've learned over the last 6 months developing, testing, and
debugging this work is that there are some varied and unique RAID
setups out there. It's impossible to catch all of them.

As I said before, I think this part of the enable my Hardy system for
booting degraded RAID should be handled via documentation. There is
a server-guide task attached to this bug. We need to add a bit there.
Probably something in the Community documentation would be good. And
I can certainly blog about it.

Beyond that, code-wise, perhaps we could emit a warning in the
grub-install postinst, that detects if /boot is on a RAID, and
recommend that the user investigate the situation and perhaps run
grub-install on the device. Steve mentioned update-notifier, which
might be interesting on some desktop systems running RAID, but it's
not present on the server.

[Bug 294972] Re: xorg 10-20% cpu usage after intrepid upgrade, general system sluggishness

2008-12-05 Thread Jonathan Apostoles
I am also having this issue. I'm using the latest nvidia driver with a
fresh install of Ibex on a new laptop.

It seems to be related to either firefox or certain network operations.
There are certain websites that if I go to it will happen 100% of the
time. IE: farechase.yahoo.com, or kohanaphp.com. KohoanaPHP.com is the
easiest to reproduce.

1. Boot ubuntu
2. load firefox
3. visit http://www.kohanaphp.com/

Can someone verify my claim that a) it seems to be network/firefox
related, and b) that www.kohanaphp.com causes their system to become
unresponsive?

I know it sounds crazy, but I'm having this same issue, and this pretty
much always reproduces it.

[Bug 259927] Re: [intrepid] dolphin crashes when adding an sftp:// bookmark to the side panel

In SVN trunk (what will eventually be in Jaunty), it does this:

mimetype could not be determined!

I guess that's better than crashing. I have updated the KDE bug
accordingly.

[Bug 305532] [NEW] bluetooth keyboard not working on kubuntu hardy

2008-12-05 Thread Jordi Moles
Public bug reported:

hi,

i've got my kubuntu hardy fully updated with kernel 2.6.24-22-generic in
a single-core machine, 32 bits.

the thing is that i've used ubuntu for some time now and i never had
problems with my mouse or keyboard which talks to kubuntu through
bluetooth.

Right now, with hardy (and also intrepid) i'm unable to use the
keyboard, while the mouse works ok.

both mouse and keyboard are advent and i've tried with concentronik
and also belkin usb bluetooth on my computer.

The one i'm using right now show this:

*
# lsusb
Bus 002 Device 001: ID :
Bus 001 Device 002: ID 0a5c:200a Broadcom Corp. Bluetooth dongle
Bus 001 Device 001: ID :
#

The issue is quite weird and hard to explain, let's hope i put it very
clear:

steps to reproduce this problem:

-i put my mouse on visible mode
-i press right button on bluetooth icon and say add device
-i find new mouse, i add it, and i'm able to use it without any more trouble.
-kubunts asks me if i trust this device, i say yes, always and then i'm able
to use it whenever i want without any problem.
-i reboot the machine and i'm still able to use the bluetooth mouse after
pressing several times any of the buttons.. i guess this is normal behaviour...
but anyway... it's ok to me...
-also, for example, i've got ktorrent in .kde/Autostart and it starts without
problem and i can see its icon on the task bar (i'll explain later why this is
important)

now it comes where the problem starts:

-i put my keyboard on visible mode
-i press right button on bluetooth icon and say add device
-i find new keyboard, i add it.
-kubuntu asks me to enter a key that i set up in my bluetooth device. It's a
simple keyboard, i guess it doesn't have this key (it used to work without any
problem before)... so... i press empty key and after a few seconds waiting
and pressing God knows how meny keys. the keyboard seems to work.
-kubunts asks me if i trust this device, i say yes, always
-i reboot the machine to see if kubuntu still can find both devices
-when kubuntu is back... i move the mouse... and it starts working i press
some keys on the keyboard but i won't work at all. even if i delete it from the
trusted devices and so on and i get back to set up the device... it won't
work...
-i also find then that the ktorrent icon is not there anymore, although
ktorrent seems to be working. Also, if i launch firefox, for example, i can't
see the top bar where the X to close the window is... so i have to go
File-Exit to exit firex. It looks like something is broken on kde when i use
my keyboard and things don't appear propperly on the desktop.

These are the logs i get from bluetooth, the seem normal to me, i can't
see any problem:

[Bug 305431] Re: kontact crashed with no crash handler

2008-12-05 Thread Harald Sitter
Unfortunately not. To my knowledge KCrash doesn't save the backtraces
anyway. For what it's worth: there have been repeatedly reports about
KMail with IMAP going down and taking data with it.

But it's not really necessary to have a backtrace to tell you that it
this crash probably appeared because of the design shortcomings in
KMail. The good news is, KDEPim is going to start using Akonadi (a
completely new approach to store PIM data) in 4.2 and once KMail makes
full use of it I am very confident that for one data should be a lot
more secure and for another KMail with IMAP shouldn't crash (like not at
all).

I am marking the bug as invalid since we can't precisely trace the
issue, but it will be fixed by Akonadi most likely.

[Bug 294972] Re: xorg 10-20% cpu usage after intrepid upgrade, general system sluggishness

2008-12-05 Thread LinuxKrn
I'd also like to add this happens with me as well. I have a high end
machine (3.4Ghz CPU, dual SLI 8800 GTX, RAID0 SSD, 4GB RAM) and firefox
will cause Xorg to 100% CPU and everything freezes for sometimes as long
as 5+ seconds when opening or closing new tabs. Even loading pages
feels sluggish or causes freeze.

After GDM log-in, the desktop will also hang for 10+ seconds with only
the background image showing. Panels, icons, startup sound, etc. are
not loading until many seconds later.

Disabling Compiz doesn't improve things that much. (maybe shaves one
second off)

I've tried with SLI enabled and disabled and get same results. It seems
to be an issue that happened late with 8.04 after some upgrades, and
wasn't fixed/resolved in 8.10. I am not sure, but think it all happened
around the xorg 7.3 upgrade time frame.

I'm still following this thread but the problem went away for me about a

What I did notice, when it was still happening, is that it always
occurred after I started X from a terminal with startx. Since Ubuntu
boots directly into Gnome I suppose you would not realize this.

[Bug 305199] Re: OpenVPN on Ubuntu Intrepid

2008-12-05 Thread Thierry Carrez
2.1 RC9 and above introduced a new parameter for more security. If you
want to maintain backward compatibility you should add script-security
2 to your config file.

NB: you should consider putting your configuration in /etc/openvpn and
starting it using sudo /etc/init.d/openvpn start to avoid such
problems in the future.

[Bug 305011] Re: dmraid rc15 isw raid 10 could not find disk in metadata

2008-12-05 Thread Phillip Susi
I'm a little confused because when I got the email it looked like your
disk serial numbers were long and space padded on the front, but looking
at the message on launchpad now, they aren't. Maybe lp is eating the
duplicate spaces. Since the package in the other bug report worked for
you, try dmraid - 1.0.0.rc15-1~exp1ubuntu1~ppa1 in my PPA in which I
have also added the serial number fix.

[Bug 294972] Re: xorg 10-20% cpu usage after intrepid upgrade, general system sluggishness

2008-12-05 Thread LinuxKrn
Re: Jonathan,

I can confirm that website locks my system up for several seconds. Even
if I hit back or try to change tabs it locks up. Everything stops seems
to hang, gnome-system-monitor, top, terminals, etc. BUT, Amarok
continues to play sound from my music. So it appears to be video/xorg
related.

Ghostscript, hpijs, and CUPS relate to one another.

[Bug 267089] Re: 2.6.27-2 kernel on intrepid: disk is mounted in RO after several hours

2008-12-05 Thread Leann Ogasawara
Two of the three patches mentioned in the upstream bug report are
already in the upstream kernel and will be making their way into Jaunty:

[EMAIL PROTECTED]:~/linux-2.6$ git log
ca0c7e5101fd4f37fed8e851709f08580b92fbb3

commit ca0c7e5101fd4f37fed8e851709f08580b92fbb3

Author: Luis R. Rodriguez [EMAIL PROTECTED]

Date: Thu Nov 20 17:15:12 2008 -0800

[EMAIL PROTECTED]:~/linux-2.6$ git log b4b6cda2298b0c9a0af902312184b775b8867c65

commit b4b6cda2298b0c9a0af902312184b775b8867c65

Author: Luis R. Rodriguez [EMAIL PROTECTED]

Date: Thu Nov 20 17:15:13 2008 -0800

ath9k: correct expected max RX buffer size

The third patch is in the wireless-testing tree but I imagine it will find it's
way into Jaunty as well:

[EMAIL PROTECTED]:~/wireless-testing$ git log
c7bd0826b3080cf3d328793adc5cb2b585277bb4

commit c7bd0826b3080cf3d328793adc5cb2b585277bb4

Author: Luis R. Rodriguez [EMAIL PROTECTED]

Date: Fri Nov 21 17:41:33 2008 -0800

ath9k: Handle -ENOMEM on RX gracefully

All three of these patches are currently in the ubuntu-intrepid-lbm git tree
(ie linux-backports-modules-2.6.27) since it was recently updated to the
wireless-testing master-2008-11-24:

[EMAIL PROTECTED]:~/ubuntu-intrepid-lbm$ git log

commit 4239ade1bf58a0353bf749a69ad4c1264125af31

Author: Tim Gardner [EMAIL PROTECTED]

Date: Tue Nov 25 08:37:57 2008 -0700

UBUNTU: Update to wireless-testing master-2008-11-24

Signed-off-by: Tim Gardner [EMAIL PROTECTED]

The version of linux-backports-modules-2.6.27 which will contain these patches
should eventually make it's way into intrepid-proposed for testing and then
available as an update.

Thanks.

[Bug 300523] Re: syndaemon turns disabled touchpad back on after typing

2008-12-05 Thread Derek Monner
Further investigation of this issue has seen me return to the vanilla
Xorg.conf (without SHMConfig turned on). The issue can be described more
simply as follows.

1. syndaemon, as launched by the default Intrepid install, is using XInput to
change the touchpad properties.
2. synclient uses SHMConfig to change touchpad properties, and requires
SHMConfig to be set in Xorg.conf, even though it isn't by default.
3. /etc/acpi/asus-touchpad.sh uses synclient to toggle the enabled state of the
touchpad.

Trying to use a mixed SHMConfig/XInput solution to control touchpad
properties caused the issue I described initially. There are two
solutions to this that I can see. One is to update synclient to use
XInput instead of SHMConfig, to be in line with the recently-updated
syndaemon. The other, which I have implemented as a workaround, is to
edit the asus-touchpad.sh script to use XInput to toggle the touchpad on
and off. The modified asus-touchpad.sh is attached; it now works
correctly with syndaemon.

** Attachment added: modified asus-touchpad.sh, works through `xinput` instead
of `synclient` now

[Bug 294972] Re: xorg 10-20% cpu usage after intrepid upgrade, general system sluggishness

2008-12-05 Thread Jonathan Apostoles
Re: LinuxKrn

Yeah I found it odd because it actually locks up the system, not just
the firefox process. There are other websites that do this for me (as I
mentioned, farechase.yahoo.com after I submit a search), but that one is
pretty consistent.

I noticed a bunch of these in my Xorg.log when the system becomes
unresponsive:

-
[mi] EQ overflowing. The server is probably stuck in an infinite loop.
[mi] mieqEnequeue: out-of-order valuator event; dropping.
-

Another interesting thing I noticed is that sometimes CTRL-ALT-F1 to
switch a terminal results in a flicker of the screen as if it will
switch to a term, but then it flashes back to the GUI and sometimes is
responsive again.

Further investigation led me to believe that the system is still
operating, just nothing is redrawing. I opened a term via a shortcut on
my gnome-panel and executed mplayer and the music started while the
screen remained frozen. Even the terminal I opened wasn't actually
visible.. I just typed the commands as if the window opened and was
focused (as it should be if the system was operating normally).

Definitely video/xorg.
