Christopher, just openjdk-7 with the lo-menubar uninstalled is still painfully slow. It open grays out a 3 line LO document (in .doc format) took more than a minute to load. Hi Christopher, I ran the following command in Terminal: apport-collect 998778 After giving it an hours access it gave a message that no information was collected. I have switched to openjdk-6 [JRE 1.6.0_24 (Sun Microsystems Inc.)] found that LO is not that slow it has not crashed yet. However, although it runs much, much faster without Java I need to run JRE for some extensions like OpenOffice.org2GoogleDocs that I use several time a day . Also, there was no problem with JRE/extensions or LO with the previous version of Ubuntu (11.10). I think this version of Ubuntu runs LO faster as long as the Java is not activated. I understand why the global menu was used for the netbook edition (it saves space and most windows are maximized), but since Unity is intended to be for the desktop edition there should be an option to switch to the traditional position of the app menu. It would be welcomed by many desktop users. A commonly suggested solution is: [ ] Global Menu on [ ] Global Menu off [ ] Global Menu only for maximized windows The default is usually suggested as either the first (on) or last (on only for maximized). Hi, This is the latest error message I got: Package operation failed The installation or removal of a software package failed. Details The details are attached in the Text file to this post. On opening up the CPU cleaning pressing everything back the problem vanished. However, this problem started many days later after an update (on a Thursday). [Bug 633860] Re: No sound
While using the Live CD, Ubuntu could stream very good music with great sound from RhythmBox. Both loud clear. In fact my internal, integrated Intel sound card's front headphones jack also worked with this version (10.10 Maverick). (The back headphones jack always worked with all versions of Ubuntu) In the previous versions of Ubuntu only the back headphone jack worked. When I used windows I had to install a separate driver from Intel to make the front headphone jack work. Please could you get the sound to work in both front and back headphone jacks (like it worked from the Ubuntu 10.10 Beta LiveCd)? -- No sound https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/633860 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

I also encountered the same problem that you have described so well on how the sound icon looks. [Bug 496431] Re: Karmic starts in low graphics mode
Hi, I checked my 15 feet extension cable by tightening the contact points like I did several times before. However, when I removed the cable I found that the VGA contact point was loose. Tightening it did not help. However, I do believe there could still be a loose contact. However, following the following instructions solved my problem: HOWTO: Wrong/Low Resolution and flicker The Xorg server - the code that provides a graphic display - is very good about determining what an attached monitor can do. There are limitations. This HOWTO explains one process for obtaining a rock-solid graphics screen within the constraints of your hardware's abilities. There are many other ways to do this. Overview of the problem: When Xorg starts, it tries to figure out what kind of monitor you have via DDC/CI and EDID protocols. If your monitor and cabling are first-rate, you will never need to care about any of this. (Yay!) If not, Xorg will pick a safe VESA resolution and use that: probably not at all what you expected, and not likely to be satisfactory. (Grr.) Lucky for us all, Xorg is highly configurable and it's very easy to get the exact resolution(s) that you want, deserve, and yes, paid-for with your invested time. Warning: If you are terrified by a Linux command line, at least TRY to follow this procedure. It won't hurt you and it will help. Still with me? Then let's proceed: Step #1: What kind of monitor do you have? What are its capabilities? What is its maximum resolution? Virtually every monitor vendor will publish the specifications for their products on the web. You can find them if you just look but first, you'll need the Vendor Name and Model of that monitor. It will be printed on a plate or tag, glued, screwed, or riveted to the back, top, bottom, or side of your monitor. Go look for it now. Write that information down and keep it handy. Step #2: Fetch your specs. Bring up a browser window and search for that model eg, 'dell 3007wfphc'. Look for any site with details and specifications; the vendor's site is best, but most review sites will provide specifications too. Ideally, you will find the Horizontal Sync range, expressed in kilohertz (KHz or khz), and the Vertical Refresh range, expressed in hertz (Hz). If you found that, write it down like: Code: HorizSync 49.31 - 98.71 VertRefresh 60 and proceed to Step #4. If not, then look for the Maximum Resolution. This will be listed as something like 2560 x 1600 at 60Hz. Write that down. Step #3: Calculate the frequencies from the specified resolution. Open a terminal window (Applications - Accessories - Terminal) and enter Code: cvt 2560 1600 60 Hit Enter. This will output the following Code: # 2560x1600 59.99 Hz (CVT 4.10MA) hsync: 99.46 kHz; pclk: 348.50 MHz Modeline 2560x1600_60.00 348.50 2560 2760 3032 3504 1600 1603 1609 1658 -hsync +vsync Aha! The vertical refresh will be exactly 59.99Hz and the horizontal sync will be 99.46KHz. Write it down as: Code: HorizSync 99.46 VertRefresh 59.99 Step #4: Create a basic xorg.conf Write the following commands down on paper because we're going to turn off the GUI and run a few commands from the console. Flip to the text console via Ctrl+Alt+F1 and log in. Execute these commands: Code: sudo /etc/init.d/gdm stop sudo X -configure sudo /etc/init.d/gdm start ; exit (ignore any notices about the new way of starting/stopping services - those new ways work, and so does this way, but this way works on all releases) You're back at the GUI login screen, so log in and bring up the rest of these directions. Step #5: Edit the basic configuration. Edit the new configuration by opening a terminal window and running the following command: Code: sudo gedit xorg.conf.new Scroll down to the entry Code: Section Monitor Identifier Monitor0 VendorName Monitor Vendor ModelNameMonitor Model EndSection Add lines after the Identifier label to include the values you found (or calculated). The entry for that Dell monitor will look like: Code: Section Monitor Identifier Monitor0 HorizSync49.31 - 98.71 VertRefresh 60.0 VendorName Monitor Vendor ModelNameMonitor Model EndSection Note: If you appreciate details, fill in the VendorName and ModelName values (within quotes) like Code: Section Monitor Identifier Monitor0 HorizSync49.31 - 98.71 VertRefresh 60.0 VendorName Dell ModelName3007WFP-HC EndSection Step #6: Save the new configuration. Save that file. Then click File - Save As (in gedit) and save the file as /etc/X11/xorg.conf then exit gedit. Now, you have a new Xorg configuration installed where Xorg can see it, and you have a backup in your home folder. Step #7: Restart X and test. In the terminal window, enter Code: sudo /etc/init.d/gdm restart You'll be logged off and the login screen should appear a few seconds later at full resolution. Congratulations, you

[Bug 416073] Re: [i965] [karmic][GM965] low intel graphics performance - again
I had similar problems but then I manually set it right with the following instructions: HOWTO: Wrong/Low Resolution and flicker The Xorg server - the code that provides a graphic display - is very good about determining what an attached monitor can do. Congratulations, you have just done what your graphics card tried to do, but failed. -- YIKES: If the screen goes black and stays that way, then you have either not provided the correct information for your monitor or your graphics card cannot run that monitor at these

[Bug 489729] Re: Update broke Gmail Prism
Hi, The problem I had has been solved by Un installing Shiretoko. I installed FireFox and Prism again. Now Gmail Prism Google docs Prism work fine. Besides I got back the Firefox logo (I am not a big fan of the Shiretoko logo). ** Changed in: prism (Ubuntu) Status: Incomplete = Fix Released -- Update broke Gmail Prism https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/489729 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 496431] Re: Karmic starts in low graphics mode
Hi, I now got a new message when I started my computer after a 'shut down'. The message was: Ubuntu is running in Low Graphics mode. The following error was encountered. You may need to update your configuration to solve this. (EE) Failed to load module i810 (module does not exist, 0) (EE) open/dev/fb0 No such file or directory (EE) intel (0): No modes (EE) Screen(s) found, but none have a usable configuration. I have the log file on my computer and can attach it to this bug report if required. Incidentally, the 'Visual effects' can no longer function on 'Extra' and are on 'None'. -- Karmic starts in low graphics mode https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/496431 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 489729] Re: Update broke Gmail Prism
Hi Gersten, I don't know the answer to 'Are you using the installed menu entry to launch Prism Google Mail?' However, I will try and guess. Most likely, no, I am not using the installed menu entry to launch Prism Google Mail because I wanted the latest version of Firefox so I got Shiretoko. A recent upgrade of Shiretoko broke Google Mail (Gmail) in prism. -- Update broke Gmail Prism https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/489729 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 496431] [NEW] Karmic starts in low graphics mode
Public bug reported: I updated my Laptop Desktop PC to Karmic. Both these systems are using integrated Intel X3100 for graphics. However, my Desktop system is running Ubuntu in low-graphics mode. My Laptop (Acer 5920) works fine. The message I get is “(EE) Screen(s) found, but none have a usable configuration. Fatal server error: no screens found” I am writing this complaint on this Desktop PC which is running on a low resolution of 800 * 600. Even 'Systems Preferences Display only has 800 * 600 as the highest resolution. (The only other resolution is 640 * 480). This problem was not there in Hardy Heron, although this problem would occasionally occur with Jaunty. I use a 15 foot VGA cable extension for my wall mounted Samsung SyncMaster 920 NW Monitor. (I have dual booted XP graphics works fine, so I think it is unlikely to be a hardware issue) I read somewhere in Launchpad the files required for reporting bugs like this, given by Mr. Bryce Harrington. I am attaching it herewith. 1) Release of Ubuntu = Ubuntu 9.10 2) The version of the package you are using, via 'apt-cache policy packagename' p-desktop:~$ apt-cache policy packagename W: Unable to locate package packagename 3) What you expected to happen Expected to function on a higher resolution like before. 4) What happened instead A low resolution of 800 * 600 on my 19 inch monitor.
