[Bug 292473] Re: Localization [l10n] status in embarrassing state in Kubuntu

2008-11-02 Thread Jannick Kuhr
Yes, it's really a shame what happened. Especially from the point of
view of an upstream translator this is so disappointing. Is there a bug
report tracking this issue?

[Bug 99363] Re: i18n for gtk-qt-engine broken

2008-09-13 Thread Jannick Kuhr
The KDE/Kubuntu translations in Rosetta are in a very bad state atm. My
first impression is that no KDE upstream translations have been
imported. So I still don't have an overview if at least this issue is
solved. Btw. is there a bug tracking the import of KDE 4.1.1
translations to Rosetta?

[Bug 133817] Re: Make KDE translation credits nicer

2007-11-08 Thread Jannick Kuhr
Sorry, I cannot check this at the moment since I am in Southamerica
until next June. I just can tell you that in all programs I checked the
first launchpad translator has no mail address entry and his entry is
listed under the name of the second translator and so on... There seems
to be an unneeded comma somewhere. Some weeks ago I compiled such a
modified po file and it worked just fine, so this is not a probelem of
the method in general.

Kind regrads from Bolivia ;-)

[Bug 136959] Re: Zero strings in translation template

2007-09-10 Thread Jannick Kuhr
Now there are 5 strings in the translation template, but many strings
are still missing.

For example whole context dialog (Font..., Auto resize font, Dock
widget) is not translatebale.

The whole i18n seems to be broken for this app. For example the font
selection dialog should probably be translated by just using the
existing translations from kdelibs.

In addition we need a possibility to translate a desktop-kvkbd.po file
to avoid the untranslated string Virtual keybord in the start menu.

2007-09-09 Thread Jannick Kuhr
Hmm, when I checked this the last time the strings had been in the
systemsettings.po file. But I can check this once again.

OT:
Perhaps it would be resonable to file some kind of Kubuntu-i18n Meta-Bug (if
launchpad supports this). Without being nasty I have to confess that probably
all programs created by Kubuntu itself are affected from more or less severe
i18n issues.

I know about:
- Adept
- Guidance
- Software Properties (as part of Guidance)
- Restricted Manager (no i18n at all on kde)
- Apport (same as Restriced Manager)

[Bug 133817] Re: Make KDE translation credits nicer

2007-08-29 Thread Jannick Kuhr
The optimal solution should be a patch to kdelibs which allows the
following:

1. We should add a translateable title above the original upstream
translators (eg. Upstream translators) followed by the normal list of
translator names and their mail adresses.

2. And a new section for the Lauchpad translators below, with their
names and http links to their launchpad accounts. This section should be
separted from the upstream translators by a free line and get a
translatable title like Launchpad translators.

Now lauchpad would be able to enter its translators in this new section.

[Bug 109215] Re: kdevelop is not translated into german in feisty

2007-04-24 Thread Jannick Kuhr
This is not really a problem with KDevelop in Ubuntu, but with KDevelop
3.4 in general. Unfortunately this version has been released english
only. The problem has been discussed with the upstream developers and
the upstream translation teams. The next version (3.5) which contains a
100% translation will be released together with kde-3.5.7 in about two
weeks.

2007-04-23 Thread Jannick Kuhr
Since Gaim is translated upstream and not by the german Ubuntu

with the usptream translator and not to introduce any distribution
specific changes.

During the last years Björn Voigt bjoern ät cs.tu-berlin.de has been

to discuss this issue.

[Bug 99363] i18n for gtk-qt-engine broken

Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gtk-qt-engine

Although gtk-qt-engines is completly translated in Rosetta and the

Renaming the i18n file gtk-qt-engines.mo in /usr/share/locale-

[Bug 78318] Screensaver unlock dialog ignores translation

2007-01-07 Thread Jannick Kuhr
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: kdebase

The german translation team has been informed by an user that the
translation of the screensaver unlock dialog (part of kdesktop) is
broken.

This does not seem to be a problem of the translation itself, Rosetta or
the langpack:

1. Rosetta uses the correct template (kdesktop) including these strings
2. This template is completly translated by upstream
3. The appropiate file of the langpack (kdesktop.mo) is installed
4. In my Gentoo system this dialog is completly translated
5. Replacing Kubuntu's kdesktop.mo by Gentoo's kdesktop.mo does not change
anything.

For some reason the dialog ignores the exisiting and installed
translation.

although it is completely translated in Rosetta.

1. The template used in Rosetta has only 285 strings, but should have
about 314 (svn at release of 1.4.0). Probably an old template (1.3.1?)

2. Additionally there are missing the .po files in the source release. I

[Bug 58579] Re: no kopete translations in edgy

2006-09-07 Thread Jannick Kuhr
Do you just use the .pot files from kde-3.5.4 or do you generate new
.pot files for Ubuntu's kopete backport? If you do the latter and just
import the exisitng translation of kdenetwork-3.5.4, this could cause
some trouble with the upstream translation teams.

Kopete-0.12.2 has been backported to kde 3.5.5 and the upstream
translation teams are already translating the missing strings (about
350). If you make your own backport at this moment, you will have about
350 untranslated strings in Rosetta too. This will cause doubled work
(Ubuntu and Upstream) and also cause a fork of Kopete's translation in
Rosetta.

I see two possible soultions for this issue:

1. Just use the existing translation (.pot and .po) of kdenetwork-3.5.4
and accept that there are missing strings. This is of course not very
elegant and not really a solution.

2. Delay the generation of kopete-0.12.2 .pot files, announce the
problem to the upstream translators (kde-i18n-doc) and ask them to
provide translations soon. kdenetwork-3.5.5 with kopete 0.12.2 inculuded
will be tagged about October 1st. So give the upstream translators some
time to provide translations and import this translations (although for
kde-3.5.5 should match exactly) together with .pots. This procedure will
prevent unnecessary translation work and unwanted forks and also shows
that Ubuntu really cooperates with upstream :)
