[Bug 1328708] Re: [HP Pavilion dv6t-6b00 CTO Quad Edition Entertainment Notebook PC] System freezes periodically when I try to suspend to RAM
I've now tested 3.19-rc1 for about a month. First couple weeks it was rock steady--no weird behavior involving sleep (spontaneously falling asleep either on wake up or spontaneously waking up when I try to put to sleep) and no crashes. At the end of two weeks, I began to get 'double wakings' (i.e., I had to unsuspend twice before it stayed unsuspended and didn't fall asleep spontaneously), shortly thereafter I had a couple system freezes, requiring hard shutdown. Each time I had plugged in something to the USB port(s) while it was in suspend and crashed occurred while waking. It's been double-waking consistently since the first freeze, for a couple weeks. Had my third system freeze today, also on wake from suspend. I'll update to the latest kernel -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1328708 Title: [HP Pavilion dv6t-6b00 CTO Quad Edition Entertainment Notebook PC] System freezes periodically when I try to suspend to RAM To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/1328708/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 1328708] Re: [HP Pavilion dv6t-6b00 CTO Quad Edition Entertainment Notebook PC] System freezes periodically when I try to suspend to RAM
Hi Christopher: I've been using 3.18-rc1 for a few weeks now. Initially seemed quite stable, except for fairly consistent 'double wakings'--that is, I'd wake it from a suspend and it would automatically fall asleep again in a few seconds. It would stay awake after a couple wakings. In the last couple weeks, I've had a number of crashes. One crash while waking from sleep (by crash I mean a complete system freeze, couldn't switch to an alternative terminal for a graceful shutdown), a couple crashes while booting up (KDE would not load and then I couldn't do anything but a hard reboot), and probably a couple more crashes the specifics of which I cannot now remember. Still, more stable than the current kernel for this computer. Do you think I could try anything more advanced than 3.18-rc1 given that X wouldn't load with 3.18-rc2? Just had a crash with 3.17.0 rc7. When it woke from sleep, the login screen appeared but neither the keyboard or mouse externally attached or the keyboard or trackpad on the machine would respond. Had to hard reboot. dmesg output from the time the computer was put to sleep and shortly after I hard rebooted the machine are attached. There are a lot of error msgs about hal, which I installed because otherwise I couldn't watch video from Amazon or Hulu(?). I think there are hal error messages even w/o a crash. Hi Christopher: First, to let you know about a crash: I was running 3.13.0-35 and it spontaneously woke up from sleep and froze on me, with the screen repeating an error message approximately like: mei_me no destination server found. I have a dmesg copy from what I believe is right before the crash (when it went to sleep and before spontaneously waking) but do not see anything obvious in it. Just in case, it's attached. I'll try out the most recent kernel when I get a chance. I've not been able to use rc1 much and have been waiting to catch it in the act of crashing--with my dmesg on suspend code running. Would like to get that to you so perhaps the problem could be identified. I haven't used rc1 heavily in part because I can't compile dkms for virtualbox, which I need for attaching to my workplace infrastructure. Apparently, it's not available for that version of the kernel yet. Given that this laptop has been out for several years, it's not a good thing that ubuntu still has problems with it. [Bug 1328708] Re: [HP Pavilion dv6t-6b00 CTO Quad Edition Entertainment Notebook PC] System freezes periodically when I try to suspend to RAM
I've been using v3.17-rc1-utopic for a few weeks now. It didn't crash for more than a week, then I had two system freezes on the same day. Hasn't crashed again in more than a week. I do get some 'sleep effects' --initially going into suspend right after I tried to wake it, more recently spontaneously going into suspend and waking immediately after I suspend it. Overall, seems like pretty much the same set of problems. I created a script to save the dmesg output right before a suspend because it's on suspend or wake that the system freezes and the dmesg right before a freeze usually contains a bug trace. [Bug 1328708] Re: [HP Pavilion dv6t-6b00 CTO Quad Edition Entertainment Notebook PC] System freezes periodically when I try to suspend to RAM
I'm a little unclear as to what you'd like me to do with DebuggingKernelSuspend. The system crashes are not deterministic--they happen about once a week at my current use rate. So, I can't make them happen. My last crash was last night, but I had to hard reboot 4 times before I had a functioning system. The first time was to restart after the crash, the last 3 times were because the system froze as it tried to load KDE. On the last reboot, KDE came back, so it's on this reboot that I'm collecting data. As far as I can tell, the DebuggingKernelSuspend document suggests obtaining the two pieces of output I've attached. There are no instances of "hash matches" in the enclosed dmesg output. Anyway, hope this helps. If there's anything else I can do, let me know. Incidentally, I told the system to report bugs (these appeared in dialog boxes on reboot), but the usual apport password authentication and other dialogs never came up, so I don't know whether the bug reports were sent (probably not). BTW, I can't make sense out of what DebuggingKernelSuspend is saying about the clock. There don't seem to be any commands listed that make use of that. [Bug 1328708] Re: [HP Pavilion dv6t-6b00 CTO Quad Edition Entertainment Notebook PC] System freezes periodically when I try to suspend to RAM
Just fyi, rc3 had the same problems as ever: crashes either going to and waking from sleep; system spontaneously waking after trying to put it to sleep, a rare instance or two of the system falling asleep spontaneously while being used. A little over a week ago, I installed rc7. Same problems. If you're beginning to think that this is a hardware problem, you should know that the system also has windows on it (dual boot). When windows is running, I have never had a problem with sleep or system freezes. It's not clear to me that apport is reporting these problems to you. When I hard shutdown and restart after a crash, I get the dialog boxes asking me whether I want to report a problem (in fact, I get these boxes whether the system crashes or shuts down gracefully). I indicate I do, but then don't get a dialog box from apport 'ubuntu crash' that asks me for my password. On my last crash the screen filled with what looked like dmesg output and something to the effect that there was a 'recursive error' I'm wondering if there's a deliberate effort to address the problems I'm having or whether the kernel team is simply working on a better kernel and the hope is that it will by chance fix these problems. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1328708 Title: [HP Pavilion dv6t-6b00 CTO Quad Edition Entertainment Notebook PC] System freezes periodically when I try to suspend to RAM To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/1328708/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

Well, the new kernel was more stable for a week, but I've now had two system crashes, one waking from sleep (a new phenomenon) and one going to sleep (same old). Also had it wake spontaneously right after I tried to put it to sleep. Whether these are exactly the same problem as in the existing kernel I do not know. I went through my kernel and dmesg logs and didn't see an error that might explain what I'm experiencing. I did send in automatic bug reports after the crashes. [Bug 1328708] Re: [HP Pavilion dv6t-6b00 CTO Quad Edition Entertainment Notebook PC] System freezes periodically when I try to suspend to RAM
Hi Chris: So i installed a newer kernel today, 3.16-rc1. So far, no system crashes, which is very promising. Yesterday I tried running two sequences of five suspends (system reboot in between) and got no spontaneous waking, but did get two system crashes and a third one in Unity (am using the computer somewhat differently than in past months). I noticed the attach bug report three times right before a crash (always the same bug report). Looks like the bug is in the MEI driver, which could mean that other Intel systems are affected. If, as now seems likely, the new kernel will resolve my issues, I'd like to use it in earnest, but this raises many questions. For example, VirtualBox refuses to work under this new kernel, and the kernel wants me to install nearly 100 new packages, but I suspect this would mess things up for the old kernel and I may need to go back to that when things like VB won't work. [Bug 1327625] [NEW] system spontaneously awakes from sleep; other sleep problems
Public bug reported: I added KDE to an Ubuntu installation. When I'm in KDE, I've had numerous problems with suspend to RAM, even though I don't believe I had these problems in Unity. The particular problem I just had, so perhaps the data apport collected spotted something, was this: I deliberately suspended to RAM. A few seconds later, the computer woke up without my doing anything (did not touch the keyboard, etc.). This has happened numerous times. For a while, I had to suspend twice whenever I wanted the suspend to take hold. [Other suspend problems, but which have not occurred just now: a) system freezes when I initiate a suspend--have to hard shutdown otherwise computer keeps running with nothing showing on either display; b) system goes into suspend, and wakes right back up again a few seconds later, for no apparent reason--can happen when I'm watching a video or editing some text; c) system suspends and wakes up when I move between activities] I erased the contents of various system logs to see what records were being generated when the problem occurs. [Bug 1264213] Re: PCI/internal sound card not detected
I took some severe measures (dpkg remove, ignore dependencies) to eliminate the audio ppa software from my system and reinstall the base software and kernel modules. Rebooted. Still no luck. Then reinstalled the ppa software with the long line of install code at SoundTroubleshootingProcedure in the Ubuntu Community Documentation. My audio is now working again. Still, took hours and a lot of experimentation to get to this point. It would be better if audio wasn't fragile to occasional hard shutdowns. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1264213 Title: PCI/internal sound card not detected To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/alsa-driver/+bug/1264213/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 1264213] Re: PCI/internal sound card not detected
Hi Raymond: Yes, that seems to be the source of the problem. I'm guessing there's some incompatibility between kernel modules, perhaps because of my use of the audio ppa. I've tried to remove the ppa, but synaptic indicates a lot depends on it. [Bug 1264213] [NEW] PCI/internal sound card not detected
Public bug reported: Every time my system goes through a hard shutdown (power outage, forced reboot), my audio stops working on reboot. Usually I've been able to resuscitate the audio by reinstalling all the audio drivers, as suggested on the audio troubleshooting page for the Ubuntu community. The last time, however, this did not work and I had to install the latest ppa audio, after which audio came back. Now, nothing seems to work. I know the sound card and audio systems are fine--the machine is a dual boot and audio works without problems with Windows running. Ubuntu 'sees' the sound card, at least according to sysinfo. But, my sound system settings shows "Dummy Output," no microphone, and no hardware. I'm guessing that something left over from the hard reboot is blocking the system's access to my audio card, but can't seem to find anything online with suggestions for a fix. I'd say the problem is a bug because I'd hope Ubuntu would be robust to an occasional hard shutdown. Here's to confirm that this bug also exists on Ubuntu 11.10 running on a HP Optiplex 990 Desktop (i7-2600 chip). Everything is set up as specified in various online how-tos, so the first magic packet wakes the machine up. After that, nothing happens unless I restart the computer. I've tried Michael's fix above, which stops and restarts the NIC. I have no problem restarting it, but the machine does not wake from sleep afterwards. [Bug 713787] Re: System hangs shortly after any wake from suspend
Hi madbiologist: Thanks for the tip. Unfortunately, I couldn't wait any longer w/ a system that didn't work for my purposes (I step away a lot from my machine and hate wasting energy, so want something I can suspend). Consequently, I cannot now test your suggested solution. Am not sure why Ubuntu wouldn't auto-install the latest version of fglrx, but am guessing you are suggesting I install it manually from something newer than what the repos have? I installed Windows XP and am running Ubuntu in VirtualBox within Windows. Windows is able to suspend / hibernate without problems. This is the 2nd Ubuntu system I've had this problem with: Also recently had a new box from ZaReason that worked find for 3 days and then, after a kernel update, the system started hanging after suspend and hibernate. ZaReason tried hard to find the source of the problem and traced it to the kernel update but could find no solution. That box also had a Nvidia card. I sent it back to the manufacturer. At this point I have 3 computers, two of which are running Ubuntu in Virtualbox in Windows. My old ZaReason office desktop, which has no graphics card, does not get suspend / hibernate issues. Given my experiences with the last ZaReason computer, I suspect my next purchase will be for a Windows machine from HP on which I'll install Ubuntu in VirtualBox, perhaps on a separate partition so I can run it independently if Ubuntu ever shows signs of fixing its suspend / hibernate problems. Ironically, Ubuntu is converting me into a Windows user (used to be a Mac person). -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/713787 Title: System hangs shortly after any wake from suspend -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 728112] Re: Computer unable to wake from suspend
Hello: I'm one of the people affected by this bug. I've filed an earlier report on this bug, which you can find here: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/722039 As indicated in that report, I did try an upstream (mainline) kernel, with exactly the same result. The problem here is a significant one and it appears to be a regression. I paid a lot of money to get a computer from a company that specializes in Ubuntu. The machine worked fine for a couple days and then suddenly started having these hibernate / suspend issues-- possibly as a result of a linux kernel upgrade (that's what the company thinks). Because of the way I use this machine, with frequent breaks of indeterminant length and the need to have a large number of files and applications open simultaneously for my work, plus some revulsion for having a 200+ watt device running continuously, not having suspend / hibernate makes this machine non-viable for me. I'll likely be returning it. I got the machine because my 5-year-old HP computer went from no hibernate / suspend issues (in Ubuntu 8.xx) to system freezes every 3-5 hibernates or suspends (in 9.xx+). More than a year after describing these issues on launchpad, the problem remains. (Granted, it must be very hard to determine and fix problems without access to the specific computers that are having problems.) With my kind of experiences, I'm beginning to conclude the only way to have a viable Ubuntu system for my work is virtualization on a Windows machine--perhaps. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/728112 Title: Computer unable to wake from suspend -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 713787] Re: System hangs shortly after any wake from suspend
Hi Maciek: Thanks for the tip! Unfortunately, searching for 'tpm' in lsmod indicates that my kernel has no tpm modules to begin with, so removing them shouldn't make a difference. Latest theory by the company that sold me the computer is that the software is using APM rather than ACPI, hence the problem. I love using linux. Just wish it was more robust with respect to hardware and wake / suspend. I guess it's not the fault of the Linux community if the hardware companies don't give them the specs needed to make the hardware work fully with the software. [Bug 722039] Re: System crashes / freezes on suspend
More information: I've tried the upstream (mainline) kernel 2.6.36 (see below). Same result--after 15 minutes of waiting, the fan and machine do not fully go to sleep. Linux GhostWheelII 2.6.36-020636-generic #201010210905 SMP Thu Oct 21 09:08:58 UTC 2010 x86_64 GNU/Linux I also tried uninstalling the Nvidia driver. With the driver gone, I still get the machine not going fully to sleep. However, at least 3 of 4 times I was able to make the computer usable again by pressing the power button to 'wake' the system from its partial sleep. In other words, I was able to get an image on my monitor and use the keyboard and mouse. So, the graphics card driver is contributing something to the problem. Quite possibly, the graphics card is what is failing to go to sleep--I think it has the loudest fan on the entire system and the fan I hear when the system is suspended does not seem any quieter than normal. Repeated tests now show that *whenever* I suspend, the system fails to go to sleep. That is, the problem has become deterministic. It's quite odd that it was not deterministic when I first started using the system but became so. That made me think that perhaps some software I installed is causing problems. The only non-repository software I used was the Nvidia driver, but removing it didn't fix the problem. So, what else could it be? I decided to test the hypothesis of the software being a problem by running a clean copy of the system from a USB Startup Disk. I rebooted from the USB, got into the gnome desktop and ran suspend. More than 10 minutes later, the fan had not turned itself off. That suggests that it isn't the software on the system causing the problems. So, the mystery is how I could suspend and hibernate a few times before those stopped working deterministically, even after going to a USB Startup Disk. I haven't modified the BIOS. Perhaps something like the Nvidia driver permanently altered settings on the graphics card? I don't even know if that's possible. The other possibility is that hardware on the system has begun to go bad (after 2 days on a new system), though I see nothing in the logs on that (then again, I'm not an expert). -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/722039 Title: System crashes / freezes on suspend -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 722039] Re: System crashes / freezes on suspend
OK, I tried to do another suspend, after rebooting the system. The system froze again. The computer became non-responsive, screen went black, but the computer fan (at least) kept running. I waited just over 20 minutes (I timed it) and the system still would not suspend. I tried waking the system with a short press of the power button. The hard disk began to make noises, but the screen remained blank. I then shut down by holding in the power button. I'm attaching copies of the relevant portions of a number of logs. It appears the system makes preparations to go to sleep, but does not record actually going to sleep. Then, 20 minutes later, when I hit the power button shortly to 'wake' the machine, the logs record going into suspend and then waking up, but encountering a number of problems. I hope this helps, though I don't see anything particularly clear in the logs about the cause of the problem. If the company that sold me this machine has insured that it can suspend and hibernate, I wonder if some software I've added is responsible, perhaps the Nvidia driver? ** Attachment added: "various log information from time of suspend problem" https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/722039/+attachment/1861352/+files/SuspendErrorLogs.txt -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/722039 Title: System crashes / freezes on suspend -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 722039] [NEW] System crashes / freezes on suspend
Public bug reported: I had an older HP Pavilion that I just replaced because it would crash about once every 3-5 suspends or hibernates. I replaced it with a box built for Ubuntu by ZaReason. I did a couple hibernates and a couple suspends on my new system and it froze on suspend, just like the old box. This is an appreciable problem for me given how I use the machine. The system started taking an unusually long time to hibernate on the second hibernate. Then on the 2nd or so suspend, the screen went blank, the system did not shut down for an extended time, and, when I tried, I could not switch terminals (e.g. to more gracefully shut down) and could not get anything to appear on the screen. After several additional minutes, I hard shut down the computer. Looking at the kernel log, it seems that the computer tried to suspend and then, within the same second, somehow decided to try to wake up, encountering errors along the way. The time code for when this happened is Feb 19 20:30:49. Will try to add any useful log info as I find it, if it isn't in the report. 1) The release of Ubuntu you are using, via 'lsb_release -rd' or System -> About Ubuntu Description:Ubuntu 10.10 Release:10.10 2) The version of the package you are using, via 'apt-cache policy pkgname' or by checking in Software Center :~$ uname -a Linux GhostWheelII 2.6.35-25-generic #44-Ubuntu SMP Fri Jan 21 17:40:44 UTC 2011 x86_64 GNU/Linux 3) What you expected to happen System would suspend. 4) What happened instead System froze. I resume. I can continue to work with the computer. What happened instead: I suspend. I resume. I work with the computer for a few seconds and then everything locks up. Am unable to even shift to another terminal window to somewhat gracefully shut down. Some other notes: I have just clean installed and updated Maverick. I've not added or otherwise altered any software. I can also deterministically reproduce the suspend problem either with the USB startup disk or with the original, not updated version of Maverick. And, I can deterministically reproduce the problem with the amd64 version of Maverick. Why did I install Maverick knowing that the suspend problem existed? Because a) I have what seemed to be serious problems with earlier versions of Ubuntu and b) I was hopeful that the kernel updates once I installed Maverick would fix the problems. Clearly they didn't. Regarding b), I wish there were an easier way to test the most recent kernel updates on a new Ubuntu version to see if serious suspend / hibernate problems etc. exist--easier than having to load and update the entire system on my computer. I tried running update manager on my USB startup disk, just installing the kernel updates. This failed because apparently the initramfs is read only. It looks like the installation .iso's for new versions of Ubuntu such as Maverick rarely, if ever, get updated to reflect current kernel versions, so that doesn't leave much possibility for knowing whether serious problems have been fixed in later kernel updates for Maverick--with installing that version. As for why I'm desperate to move to a new version of Ubuntu, let me explain. In 8.04, I had no suspend / resume problems. The system was rock stable and it was a pleasure to use my computer. However, I changed my broadband provider to WIMAX and, given that the WIMAX modem only gets a good signal in one spot of our house, I had to start using wifi to connect my desktop to the Internet. I spent most of a work week trying to get wifi to work on 8.04, to no avail. I then installed 9.04, which made wifi possible, but the system would hang when I tried to suspend or hibernate every 5 or so times I tried to suspend or hibernate (see bug report #502801). I've been upgrading to new versions of the system ever since (every version up to 10.10) in the hopes that that would go away. This bug may be related to the fact that every few minutes my kernel logs would report ACPI errors (illegal i/o port address /length above 64K). I was thrilled to find that in Maverick the ACPI errors no longer occurred, but now I can deterministically crash the system simply by waking from suspend--which is worse. Granted, I'm on an old system & maybe I should update it (I did try to update the BIOS, but this had no effect on the errors in 10.10). On the other hand, the system meets my home needs and I hate throwing things out for no good reason. I love ubuntu on my office machine, where I don't have serious problems. Just wish these problems were solved for my home machine. [Bug 703672] [NEW] package postgresql-8.4 8.4.6-0ubuntu10.04 failed to install/upgrade: subprocess installed post-installation script returned error exit status 1
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: postgresql-8.4 Just trying to upgrade my software to Lucid from Karmic, but get an error with the 8.4 installation. It reads: E: postgresql-8.4: subprocess installed post-installation script returned error exit status 1 E: postgresql: dependency problems - leaving unconfigured Part of the issue may be that I have everything from 8.2 to 8.4 installed on the system. Here are some notes I took when I had Karmic about transition issues: #Current version is 8.4, but you have data in 8.3 and are running the survey system on the desktop off 8.3. Once you updated to karmic, it had erased 8.3 executables but left enough of 8.3 to make it look like it was still there. To access your data and run 8.3 you needed to use this: sudo apt-get install postgresql-8.3. To upgrade from 8.3 to 8.4, need to look here: pg_upgradecluster (see manpage) also Please see /usr/share/doc/postgresql-common/README.Debian.gz for details. [Bug 502801] Re: System completely freezes / crashes on suspend
Hi Jeremy: Thanks for your attention to this problem. While they seem to be less frequent, my system still freezes maybe once a week (usually in a cluster of about 3 freezes in a row). When I do get a freeze, other things in my system get messed up, such as my panel apps and gnome interface (e.g. separate workspaces in gnome are not so separate anymore --windows in one workspace show up in others, the list of windows show them all together). So, while infrequent, these freezes are a headache. I'll go ahead and run apport. Am not sure how I can test another kernel. I'm not a software developer, and the suggestions on KernelMainlineBuilds look like they could wipe out my system if I don't know what I'm doing. I might try this when I get back to town later this summer. [Bug 474468] Re: xournal crashes on "save as pdf" if text input has been used when annotating a pdf
I'm not sure the fix works on my system (not available yet via Synaptic). What seems to happen is that when I open a XOJ file with text in it and then try to export as pdf, xournal dies abruptly and a zero KB output file is created. The problem does not occur when I export directly without first creating an XOJ file or if the XOJ file does not have text in it. [Bug 507222] Re: Postgresql 8.3 no longer starting on upgrade to karmic
First, another frustration, then a solution, and then a complaint for the Ubuntu team: The other frustration: I tried to update my cluster from 8.3 to 8.4, but it won't let me do so without 8.3 started up. So, now I'm really in a fix--seems there's no way to get my data back out of 8.3. Solution: Turn off 8.4 using something like boot-up manager. Next, from the command line, issue this: sudo apt-get install postgresql-8.3 . This reinstalls 8.3, but doesn't mess with the 8.3 data. Now, 8.3 can be started up. It'll be possible to either continue using 8.3 or update cluster to 8.4. Ta da! Complaint: Here's the bind the 9.10 upgrade puts postgresql users in: It apparently erases enough of 8.3 so it can't be started, but not so much that a non-expert user can tell, either from command line or boot-up manager, that 8.3 needs to be reinstalled (there's a warning during installation about 8.3, but I ignored that when boot-up manager let me turn 8.3 on and off). Also, when attempting to start 8.3, there are no error messages to tip the user off that anything is wrong. In addition, the fact that 8.3 has been partially removed means that data from 8.3 cannot be accessed and the data cluster can't be upgraded to the newly installed 8.4. 8.3 can't be reinstalled from Synaptic. I suspect many users won't think they can do so from apt-get. This is an unnecessary situation--I suspect 8.3 does not need to be uninstalled--that didn't occur in previous version upgrades. -- Postgresql 8.3 no longer starting on upgrade to karmic https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/507222 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs

[Bug 507222] [NEW] Postgresql 8.3 no longer starting on upgrade to karmic
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: postgresql-8.3 I had Postgresql 8.3 installed and then upgraded to 9.10 Karmic, which also installs postgresql 8.4. The software for 8.3 is still there and I can presumably start it up using boot-up manager or from the command line. Problem is, 8.3 cannot be started and I have data in 8.3 I need to get use. Also, because of a load of performance tweaks that I'd have to replicate with 8.4, I would rather simply be using 8.3 than moving to 8.4. When I try either boot-up manager or the command line to start 8.3, I get no error messages (nothing in the postgresql main.log and nothing in the various system logs). The command line startup also gives no "OK" indicating a successful start (but no error either). And, "ps aux | grep post" shows no new postgres processes (unlike when I start 8.4), psql says it cannot connect to a server. I tried purging all software associated with 8.4 from Synaptic, but 8.3 still will not work. I gather there should be ways to get 8.3 and 8.4 both working (using postgresql-common), but imagine that can't be done unless I can actually start 8.3, which I no longer am able to do. [Bug 502801] Re: System completely freezes / crashes on suspend
Some new behavior that may be related to the bug. I just woke up from suspend and my system could not see any wifi networks, even though there are a dozen in the area. I found the following error messages in kern.log. I was able to restart wifi access by using modprobe to remove the rt61pci module and then reinsert it. [Bug 502801] Re: System completely freezes / crashes on suspend
Some additional dmesg error messages on a near crash: My system started doing what it does on a crash when I tried to hibernate it last nite--screen goes blank, a lot of time without hard disk access. I frantically hit some alt-sysreq keys to see if I could shutdown more gracefully. The system turned off. This morning, when I turned it back on again, it woke up as if from hibernation, to my surprise. The wake up took unusually long and the screen was blank, except the following error messages popped up. I fished them out of dmesg. Hope this helps. [Bug 502801] [NEW] System completely freezes / crashes on suspend
Public bug reported: I rarely if ever had system crashes before inserting the CNET CWP-854 wifi PCI card with RT2561 chip (chip version RT2561ST). When I was Ubuntu 9.04 I had trouble making connections with the card and had many system freezes, usually when I suspended the system. I am now using 9.10 and have no problems with connections, but the system freezes on suspend periodically (about once every 5 to 7 suspends). After I suspend, the screen goes blank, except for a blinking cursor (which also eventually disappears). I cannot switch to another terminal to issue a shutdown command and none of the Alt-SysReq keys work. This is a complete freeze. I've recorded some content from my logs (kernel, debug, etc.) from just before the time of my most recent system crash. The file is attached and may be helpful. There are many error messages relating to ACPI. These messages do not occur only before the system crashes, however. They are occurring right now, after a fresh reboot and no suspend. I suspect, however, they are related to the crashes. Best of luck! I hope a fix will be in for this problem before all these crashes scramble my system. I think I may have found a workaround for this problem. When I go to Preferences > Appearance > Visual Effects and select "None," the crashes do not occur. [Bug 299310] [NEW] Suspend / hibernate cause all applications to freeze in intrepid on AMD64
Public bug reported: I've recently installed Intrepid on my AMD64 system. Of about 7 times I've used suspend or hibernate, in four cases when the system is woken up, all of the applications become unresponsive. I can switch between applications--the system sluggishly changes windows--but I cannot scroll, nothing responds to clicking, I cannot enter text, and so forth. The only solution I've found is to reboot the system. The only lines in my system logs that seem to indicate an error is enclosed as an attachment. [Bug 279319] [NEW] no sound after resume suspend in heron on 64bit system
Public bug reported: This is similar to some other bugs reported except that it's on the latest version of the ubuntu kernel (2.6.24-19-generic), on a fairly new system (ZaReason Ubuntu Homebox with Intel Core 2 Duo chip, 64bit), and doesn't seem to respond to any of the fixes suggested in other bug reports. When I resume from a suspend, sounds simply does not work on rhythmbox, exaile, or skype; whether on headphones or external speakers. Logging out and back in again does not fix the problem, only rebooting does. I have tried the following fixes from various discussion threads & bug reports, none of which solve the problem: Set ACPI_SLEEP_MODE=standby in /etc/default/acpi-support sudo /etc/init.d/alsa-utils restart sudo killall pulseaudio (probably doesn't apply to my system, but tried it anyway) Changing settings in sound preferences & in volume control (changed device). sudo alsa suspend followed by sudo alsa resume I am attaching a file with a variety of log outputs and such to help solve the problem. ** Affects: linux (Ubuntu) Importance: Undecided Status: New -- no sound after resume suspend in heron on 64bit system https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/279319 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 240896] Re: flash plugin on Ubuntu 8.04 Hardy stops working after upgrade to firefox3-final from RC1 (Ubuntu stock)?
I should perhaps also mention that I've tried going back to an earlier version of Flash, with no effect on the problem; and I've tried clearing the Firefox cache, also w/ no effect. -- flash plugin on Ubuntu 8.04 Hardy stops working after upgrade to firefox3-final from RC1 (Ubuntu stock)? https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/240896 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 240896] Re: flash plugin on Ubuntu 8.04 Hardy stops working after upgrade to firefox3-final from RC1 (Ubuntu stock)?
I have much the same configuration (on one computer) and the same problem. One of my computers is AMD64, the other is an Intel Core Duo 2, also 64 bit. On both machines, I'm running Firefox 3.0.3 and Synaptic tells me I have installed flashplugin-nonfree, installed version 10.0.1.218+10.0.0.525ubuntu1~hardy1+really9.0.124.0ubuntu2 . about:plugins in Firefox shows the following on both systems. Shockwave Flash File name: npwrapper.libflashplayer.so Shockwave Flash 9.0 r124 MIME Type Description SuffixesEnabled application/x-shockwave-flash Shockwave Flash swf Yes application/futuresplashFutureSplash Player spl Yes Both computers have Flash failing as described in this bug report. Flash was working on an earlier version of Firefox / Flash (not sure it was exactly the last version, but something close to it). I had Gnash installed on one system, but not the other. Still, had the same Flash problem on both systems. I uninstalled Gnash on that system, still the same problem. I've tried reinstalling Flash several times using Synaptic; same problem. I tried the flash / gnash uninstall instructions for non-clean 8.04 installations at the following URL and then tried installing Flash w/ Synaptic; problem does not change. http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=772490 -- flash plugin on Ubuntu 8.04 Hardy stops working after upgrade to firefox3-final from RC1 (Ubuntu stock)? https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/240896 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 174482] Re: Sleep / hibernate seriously crashes Gnome on AMD64
mtopro: sorry to hear about your having this problem. I know it's difficult enough to deal w/ on a desktop that I hate keeping on all day. Ubuntu 8.04 does, however, solve the sleep / hibernate problem for my AMD64 desktop. I'm guessing they Ubuntu wizards are working hard on this problem. I wonder if it may be an idea to report this separately as an 8.04 problem? -- Sleep / hibernate seriously crashes Gnome on AMD64 https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/174482 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 183825] Re: rythmbox switching radio streams brings up error "Couldn't start playback: Unknown playback error"
Thanks Sebastien! While we're at it, another(?) rhythmbox problem: I can be listening to a radio station for an hour or more and then suddenly the audio stream stops. When I click that station or another one I get the playback error message. The problem disappears when I restart rhythmbox. Sometimes have to restart several times while I'm working. [Bug 183825] Re: rythmbox switching radio streams brings up error "Couldn't start playback: Unknown playback error"
I haven't been able to access the hbr1 radio station on any channel for several weeks. I get the 'couldn't start playback' unknown error as well. I've tried to directly to to http://ubuntu.hbr1.com, and my browser says it can't find the server. I suspected there's something wrong w/ the station. I went to the hbr1 site and clicked Ogg Vorbis SF. This installs a different address in my Rhythmbox, which does work! Ubuntu should update these addresses because they come pre-installed w/ Rhythmbox. [Bug 174482] Re: Sleep / hibernate seriously crashes Gnome on AMD64
Just to be clear: The version of gnome-power-manager running under Ubuntu *should* work for AMD64, but it does not on my AMD64 system. This leaves several possibilities, among them: the report on the Gentoo site saying gnome-power-manager works for AMD64 is false (which is unlikely) or something done by Ubuntu to adapt that version of gnome- power-manager to Ubuntu has created a bug. So Ubuntu experts: strike one against global warming by fixing this problem! [Bug 174482] Re: Sleep / hibernate seriously crashes Gnome on AMD64
Hi Ted: Thanks for the reply! You're right, it is masked for all architectures. I have not, however, tried gnome-power-manager under Gentoo on my computer. I simply noticed that the recent version of the power manager was hard masked in Gentoo because I thought that's what was running under Ubuntu. Actually, on closer inspection, Ubuntu is running what looks like a slightly earlier version that has been modified for Ubuntu. That earlier version (though not modified for Ubuntu) gets a clean bill of health in Gentoo for AMD64, according to the portage page. But, I haven't tried it. [Bug 174482] Sleep / hibernate seriously crashes Gnome on AMD64
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: gnome-power-manager I recently installed Ubuntu Gutsy on a HP computer with an AMD64 X2 (4200+) chip. A serious constraint on my using Ubuntu is that I cannot sleep or hibernate it without badly crashing Gnome. The computer does go into sleep and hibernate, but when it wakes up gnome crashes. On wakeup from sleep, for example, the gnome gui is completely gone, the screen has gone into what looks like a terminal, and the following error messages occur (I copied and typed these by hand, so there might be some errors, though I am an accurate typist): atiixp: coedec reset timeout pnp failed to activate device 00:09 pnp failed to activate device 00:0a. ata1.00: ACPI cmd ef/03:46:00:00:00:a0 failed (Emask=0x1 Stat=0x51 Err=0x04) ata1.00:revalidation failed (errno=-5) ata1.00: ACPI cmd ef/03:46:00:00:00:a0 failed (Emask=0x1 Stat=0x51 Err=0x04) ata1.00: revalidation failed (errno=1) usb_endpoint usbdev1.1_ep00: PM: resume from 0 parent usb1 still 2 usb_endpoint usbdev1.1_ep81: PM: resume from 0, parent 1-0:1.0 still 2 usb_device usbdev1.1: PM: resume from 0, parent usb1 still 2 There is no command line after these messages. Pressing return does nothing. I then switched terminals using Alt-F2 (which shows a login command line), did nothing, and came back to Alt-F1. Now the earlier messages are gone, but the following displays: MP-BIOS bug: 8254 timer not connected to IO-APIC Loading, please wait... kinit: name_to_dev_t(/dev/disk/by-uuid/60dd5023-e9a9-40ad-a561-00665052e4be) = sda5(8,5) kinit: trying to resume from /dev/disk/by-uuid/60dd5023-e9a9-40ad-a561-00665052e4b3 kinit: No resume image, doing normal boot There is now a login command line, I use it to log into root and use 'shutdown -r now'. On reboot, problems persist. The Ubuntu splash screen comes up and the load bar starts showing some loading of software, but it pauses very early and nothing happens. I now cannot switch terminals (Alt-F2 does not work) and have to force a shutdown using the power key. On reboot, everything works fine again. ** Affects: gnome-power-manager (Ubuntu) Importance: Undecided Status: New -- Sleep / hibernate seriously crashes Gnome on AMD64 https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/174482 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is the bug contact for Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
[Bug 174482] Re: Sleep / hibernate seriously crashes Gnome on AMD64
I should add two things: First, this problem is consistently replicable --every time I suspect or hibernate, gnome crashes. Second, the problem first occurred just after I installed Ubuntu, so I think this is not a matter of interactions with software I've since installed. On the Gentoo website, gnome-power-manager-2.20.1 is hard masked for AMD64, indicating they have run into serious problems w/ that version on AMD64. -- Sleep / hibernate seriously crashes Gnome on AMD64 https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/174482 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is the bug contact for Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
