Fwd: Final Beta Testing Week
FYI -- Forwarded message -- From: Nicholas Skaggs nicholas.ska...@canonical.com Date: Tue, Mar 24, 2015 at 6:31 AM Subject: Final Beta Testing Week To: ubuntu-qual...@lists.ubuntu.com ubuntu-qual...@lists.ubuntu.com It's here! Final beta images and milestone will be appearing on the tracker by early tomorrow AM UTC. Look for the milestone under vivid on http://iso.qa.ubuntu.com/. Plan to help test by grabbing the images when they hit the tracker and reporting your results! I'll post again when the milestone link is live (assuming elfy or someone else in Europe doesn't beat me to it!) If you are new to this whole image testing thing, do have a look at the wiki walkthrough https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Testing/ISO/Walkthrough for help. In a nutshell, download the image and run through the installation testcases on your machine. The images are linked from the testcase and come from cdimage.ubuntu.com. Real hardware is preferred, but feel free to test on a virtual machine too. Submit your testcase result and perform the next test. Thanks and happy testing everyone! Obviously there is more to it than just testing though! Perhaps I need to write/create a new page to explain what kind of activities or tasks that are 'needed' within Ubuntu GNOME QA Team. To make life easier (at least now), there are 3 main tasks: 1. Testing 2. Triaging 3. Admin Work Ubuntu GNOME QA Team until this very moment lacks #2 and #3 as myself and/or Tim are doing most of the admin work, etc. Ubuntu GNOME is a community project. It means, there must be more than 1 or 2 people involved with the higher tasks. We have started to get more people involved. I'm sure you can see that clearly when it comes to marketing and translations. However, QA Team is always a priority and this time, we don't ONLY need testers but people who do triage and above all, people who could step up and do some of the dirty work myself and Tim are doing. We need someone on the Europe/USA time zone to cover us when we are sleeping. Myself and Tim are based on +11 GMT time zone. -- Remember: All of us are smarter than any one of us. [VERY IMPORTANT] Acting Team Leaders
*Note: ALL Ubuntu GNOME Sub-Teams have been included on BCC* Dear all, Kindly be reminded that on 28th of June 2014, I have sent: https://lists.ubuntu.com/archives/ubuntu-gnome/2014-June/002116.html And at the same day, this announcement has been published everywhere: http://ubuntugnome.org/acting-team-leader/ And based on the meeting log of 29th of June 2014: https://wiki.ubuntu.com/UbuntuGNOME/Meetings/29062014#Meeting_summary There are some names nominated for this 'NEW' Role within Ubuntu GNOME and AFAIK, this is the very first time within Ubuntu Communities to have such role :) Some of these names attended the meeting. Some other didn't but I vouched for. Some other names were not mentioned but I'm sure there are some people who can be there. *Ubuntu GNOME Community has 48hours starting from this moment to step in for this NEW ROLE.* Each Sub-Team - https://wiki.ubuntu.com/UbuntuGNOME/SubTeams - is required to have 1-2 Acting Team Leaders. You do need to realize and understand some solid facts: 1. I can no longer (at least this cycle) be 24/7 active as I used to previously when I first joined Ubuntu GNOME a year ago. 2. Tim is the head of developers for Ubuntu GNOME and he should not waste his time (which is very little) on anything else rather than bug fixing and development of the system. 3. This is a community base project and it should NOT be run or managed by 1 or 2 people; this is just the opposite and defeat Team Work and Community Based Project concepts. 4. ALL of us are smarter and better than anyone of us. 5. If we really do love/like Ubuntu GNOME and wish to return the favor to this system/community, we should really help. For all the above reason, this is a must-do-step. Failure to do that will definitely affect a lot of things: https://blueprints.launchpad.net/ubuntugnome-brainstorming/+spec/ubuntu-gnome-utopic-unicorn-roadmap *What you (ALL Ubuntu GNOME members or users) are required to do:* 1. Those who have been mentioned on the meeting need to reply this email with their Launchpad ID so that I can add them to Ubuntu GNOME Shinobi Team - http://ubuntugnome.org/ubuntu-gnome-leaders-board/ 2. Those who have not been mentioned on the meeting and would like to step in, please do as mentioned on #1 above. 3. No special requirements needed. If you are active daily (15-30 minutes maximum) and know about Ubuntu GNOME can step in. 4. If truth to be told, the more people step in for each sub-team the better. But it is all about quality not quantity. 5. Please, DO NOT blame anyone from Ubuntu GNOME Team if something will not be the way you like. We are limited in manpower and this is no secret and this NEW ROLE will help each sub-team to operate in more freedom and better performance. After all, the system will be better and the users will be happier. You see, we're trying to be the best (system wise and community wise) and this will require extra effort and going the extra miles. Things will never happen magically. As always, I do have lots of plans and ideas for Ubuntu GNOME :) however, without your help, me and my ideas are helpless and pointless. Please, keep that in mind. I'm not a superman and no one is. *ALL TOGETHER we can be supermen* ;) Thank you! -- Remember: All of us are smarter than any one of us. Whether you're NEW to testing or not, kindly help yourself and read: https://wiki.ubuntu.com/UbuntuGNOME/Testing If you have any Q, kindly ask :) As for Ubuntu GNOME QA Team [3] Activities, yet again, this team is suffering from a serious issue that is 'Internal Communications' :) It is either that everything is fine so that no communications at all between the members of that team OR no one is doing anything. Either way, something is wrong and must be addressed. I do hope you have seen this: http://ubuntugnome.org/acting-team-leader/ If truth to be told, I have NO idea who could help with this as I don't know who is the most active tester for Ubuntu GNOME because he/she is silent and communicate less :) While I do appreciate ALL the efforts you have put so far, we as a team need to communicate between each other and therefore, we do have a team on Launchpad and a Mailing List [4] :) You see, many changes are happening within Ubuntu GNOME community and if I have to, I'm ready to do a full re-structure to our Sub-Teams [5] if I really have to. Some Sub-Teams are NOT working as a team at all. This is not good nor helpful. I hope you see my point here. We must work as a team, period. *That said, members of Ubuntu GNOME QA Team are kindly required to 'Reply' this email so that I prepare a list of those who are active and call them for a meeting.* What I have in mind right now is to do a strict exception that membership of Ubuntu GNOME QA Team will no longer be 90 days but rather 30 days. That is great to know :) The microphone mute button is still not recognized in 14.04 but that seems to be a Deviant/Ubuntu issue (it works with all other distros I have tried like Arch, Sabayon and Fedora). I'm sorry, not really sure which one is the Microphone Mute Button? Finally, hibernation support is not enabled by default, but that is also a Ubuntu issue it seems. We didn't lock the door and will never will. We can expand that Wiki anytime we feel the need to that. Ubuntu GNOME isn't walking anymore, it is running with confidence and heads up. Be proud to be part of a fast growing and a team of high quality. What a great family anyone must be proud to be part of. Thank you for each and every second of your time you put on this. Re: Ubuntu GNOME Translation
On Tue, Jan 7, 2014 at 1:52 AM, Jean-Marc Gailis jeanmarc.gai...@gmail.comwrote: Hi! Hi :) I explained on the blueprint some of my ideas. https://blueprints.launchpad.net/ubuntugnome-brainstorming/+spec/ubuntu-gnome-translation I think you may understand that Ubuntu Gnome l10n team will not work, for the most important part of translations, on software, but on the stuff related to Ubuntu Gnome that brings us new users, with the Marketing team. The l10n team will not work alone, but with other teams. My original plan/vision even before I create the Sub-Teams ( https://wiki.ubuntu.com/UbuntuGNOME/SubTeams) on Launchpad and write that Wiki Page is to have a super close collaboration and communications between each and every Sub-Teams of Ubuntu GNOME. In our family, each and every Sub-Team work together for the greater good of Ubuntu GNOME :) this is what is going on on daily basis :) We also have to make the Doc fully translated, as it is for Ubuntu in many languages. +1 Otherwise, simple people will not be able to use Ubuntu Gnome. I'd say 'Non-English' users who have problems with English :) But keep in mind, they will have hard time in case of technical support so their LoCo Teams 'must' be ready for that and they need to understand this fact before anything else. This, IMHO, to make our plans more efficient. It is not that you spread the word of Ubuntu GNOME and gain more users then leave them without support ;) If this project/plan (translation of Ubuntu GNOME resources) to be successful, we need to think about all the other aspects. Remember what Ali signs: All of us are smarter than any one of us. We have to work Together! Ah, using my signature to motivate us is smart idea :P haha YES. I am a strict believer in that :) that is why our family (Ubuntu GNOME) is and will forever be the best because we all believe in that. We all are working together. I just love that. We have to make our work available through the LoCoTeams, because the base user will not look what is going on behind; if he gets bugs, he just want help. Indeed. This is what I have been trying to explain :D And who helps the power user? The LoCoTeams! So we have to help the LoCoTeams! Mutual collaboration :) In the LoCoTeams I'm involved in, there is a big wiki, which helps also helps people using others distros, because it is fully accessible. Moment of Truth
Hi Ubuntu GNOME QA Team, I am including the main list as well :) From now and on, I will have more time for the QA Team which to be honest, I have been a bit far from lately due to many reasons that you might be aware of: I am handling '4' sub-teams at the same time :) The work progress with the other sub-teams are really great so, starting from today, I will have more time for the QA so be ready for my nagging :P Okay, to be honest, I am wondering why Ubuntu GNOME QA have so many members but the activities on the mailing lists don't really reflect that quantity? https://launchpad.net/~ubuntugnome-qa/+members#active That makes me think: 1- Either Ubuntu GNOME Trusty is ROCK SOLID and there are really few issues which is super great OR 2- Only few are active (those who are sending emails and reporting bugs - do communicate and make themselves known) and the rest are INACTIVE which is not acceptable :) You see, we do need Quality over Quantity and this what I have been personally doing for the past few months :) All the other sub-teams are doing great specially the Wiki Team. Our Marketing and Communications sub-team is doing great as well. All these emails and planning is part of the Brainstorming Team. So, I'd like to hear/read from you about the QA Team :) - What do you think of this team? - What do we really need? - https://wiki.ubuntu.com/UbuntuGNOME/Testing has been updated 2 weeks ago so is that enough? or is it still hard to follow? - Should I worry and start recruiting more members/testers? - Is it really mission impossible to have a meeting for the QA team? - Whatever you have in mind, please ask :) I will be waiting for your reply :) While everything seems to be okay for now since we are on the Alpha 1 and soon, will have Alpha 2 but that should not mean we take it easy :) From my side, I will take sometime to come up with some 'new' ideas for this team to make things be better, more fun and excited. BUT, I do need to hear from you first, please :) Thank you! -- Remember: All of us are smarter than any one of us. [New] Google Hangout on Air for Sub-Teams' Meetings
Hi, I'd like to announce that the era of 'IRC Meetings' is no longer dominate the world of at least one of Ubuntu Communities. We might be the very first community that has started using Google Hangout on Air, beside IRC, for its Sub-Teams' Meetings :) More information: https://wiki.ubuntu.com/UbuntuGNOME/Meetings This is 'not' to replace or cancel the IRC Meetings but rather a new interested and very interactive addition to the world of Ubuntu Communities. AFAIK, none of the other communities within Ubuntu are doing that for their sub-teams meetings. It seems everyone is using IRC so let's be a bit different and use both :) If it is up to me, I'd very interested to keep using Google Hangout instead of IRC but that is just me. This is just the beginning. I do have a vision to make Ubuntu GNOME Community the best in every single aspect. I do believe that a strong community which thinks differently can have a strong system. No, I am not talking 'only' about subscribers, followers, etc ... I am actually talking about the 'Activities' on our Social Media Pages ;) Starting from August 2013 until date, Ubuntu GNOME Social Media Networks (Facebook, Google+ and Twitter) are simply the most active among all the other official flavors of Ubuntu (Ubuntu, Lubuntu, Kubuntu, etc). If you don't believe me, have a look or subscribe to the other pages and you will notice the difference :) I am subscribed to each and every Official Social Network for each and every official flavor of Ubuntu and I know what I am talking about. I truly belive *we should ship Driod Sans*. It's available on the official repositories (*fonts-droid*) and it also offers a mono-spaced version (which should be used in the terminal as well). Using Droid Sans will allow us to ship a consistent desktop experience independently of the installation language. - *New default wallpaper*. [HOWTO] Find Out What Ubuntu GNOME Team is Actually Doing
Dear Ubuntu GNOME Community, For a while, I have personally been asked several time, almost the same Q/Qs and indirectly, I have seen the same Qs yet again on our Social Media Channels. I do NOT blame the one who is asking, I also can't blame myself because I am really really super busy and the burn out is so close. And, of course, I can NOT blame anyone whatsoever. That does not matter anymore. Let's move forward. *Kindly be informed* Starting from this very moment - in fact, this has been started months ago but it seems the community didn't really understand how to find out what is going on with the team - if you have any Q (regarding the subject of this email) in mind, kindly have a read at: https://blueprints.launchpad.net/ubuntugnome-brainstorming Before you ask :) It is NOT that we don't like or hate Qs, NOT AT ALL. But, why to waste your time while your answers might be sitting over there waiting for you to read them? :D Just like any FOSS (Free Open Source Software) Project/Community, we don't have any hidden agenda. Everything is PUBLIC and that is indeed the main reason why I have created the Brainstorming Team on Launchpad. So, as a summary: If you really interested to know each and everything related to Ubuntu GNOME Development or anything about the team/project from A-Z, simply, click here: https://blueprints.launchpad.net/ubuntugnome-brainstorming If you couldn't find, have a look at the Wiki Pages: https://wiki.ubuntu.com/UbuntuGNOME/OneStopPage There are 3 super active contributors/team members who are putting sweat, tears and blood to make this area super clear, very informative and up-to-date :) and YES, we do need extra help on the Wiki as well, just like any other area ... simply because, we are a young project yet very fast growing - http://ubuntugnome.org/ubuntu-gnome-team-is-growing/ If you couldn't find your answers neither on the blueprints nor the Wiki Area, please, just ask :) Why am I sending this email? 1- To Create a Healthy Environment where everything 'must' work as smooth as possible and as effective as possible. 2- To Save Everyone's Time. 3- To KISS (Keep It Simple and Short) as much as possible. I hope this is clear. Feel free to reply this email with your suggestions if you have any :) Thank you! P.S. I am doing my very best to keep the blueprints updated and as clear as possible. This is what I enjoy to do so I won't blame anyone if I burned out :P hehe P.S. 2 @Ubuntu GNOME Wiki Team Should we add this to our Wiki Area? -- Remember: All of us are smarter than any one of us. I've devoted a great deal of time to testing the upgrade processes detailed at the iso-tracker and I welcome complaints! Lance As long as I am alive and as long as there is Ubuntu and as long as Tim and other great people around, Ubuntu GNOME will NEVER go away, that is a fact :) I think the writer didn't mean exactly that Ubuntu GNOME fade away over night but let's take his words as good intention rather bad/negative. The writer said explicitly, The Ubuntuhttp://www.phoronix.com/scan.php?page=news_itempx=MTU1Mjk#GNOME distribution that packages up the latest GNOME Shell 3 desktop environment atop Ubuntu Linuxhttp://www.phoronix.com/scan.php?page=news_itempx=MTU1Mjk#is already conceding they are low on resources and might be incapable of doing a 14.04 LTS release come next spring. Is that true? While not your intention you did sound a death knell for the project and now you need to try and unring that bell. Lance I know what the writer said. He did not bring anything from his own pocket, he took that from the mailing list and preciously from the chain of emails I have sent and Tim has sent previously. I am NOT going to re-explain myself yet again. Please do read the archive or check the previous emails :) Facts: 1- We are indeed short of manpower. 2- We had lots of people responded to my call for help. 3- We had ONLY

[FAQ] Ubuntu GNOME The Display Server
*(Q)* I am little worried about GNOME is taking a route that will be more compatible with Wayland display server, but Ubuntu will go for the MIR display server, how will this affect the next Ubuntu GNOME Releases? *(A)* The whole MIR vs Wayland thing, is entirely irrelevant for now. Ubuntu 14.04 is using X and it is not going to just disappear overnight! Ubuntu GNOME 14.10 will likely continue using X, even if Ubuntu switch to MIR.
